Study 10 THE VICTORY OF FAITH - THE RED SEA (Hebrews 11:29; Exodus ; 13:17-22; 14:5-14,19-25,30-31) This is our last study in Hebrews Eleven, and in it we shall consider the great victory which God gave to Moses and the Children of Israel as He led them through the Red Sea on dry land, it would help If you read Exodus, chapters 4-14, to see the whole background of this deliverance, and the record of the deliverance itself. Notice that in Hebrews By faith Moses, when he was born, was hid three months of his parents, because they saw he was a proper child; and they were not afraid of the king's commandment. 24 By faith Moses, when he was come to years, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh's daughter; 25 Choosing rather to suffer affliction with the people of God, than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a season; 26 Esteeming the reproach of Christ greater riches than the treasures in Egypt: for he had respect unto the recompense of the reward. 27 By faith he forsook Egypt, not fearing the wrath of the king: for he endured, as seeing him who is invisible. 28 Through faith he kept the passover, and the sprinkling of blood, lest he that destroyed the firstborn should touch them. the faith of Moses is emphasised, but in verse 29 By faith they passed through the Red sea as by dry land: which the Egyptians assaying to do were drowned. it is the faith of Moses and of the Children of Israel. It was Moses' faith and then' faith too. It was important for Moses to obey the Lord, for if he had disobeyed and failed God through unbelief, then he would have influenced the people to do the same! A great responsibility rests on those whom the Lord has appointed to positions of leadership and influence. It is a great thing when God's key-men (or women) are in touch with Him, and when 'by faith' they do His will, it Is even greater when under their leadership the people of God are led 'by faith' to do His will. The Children of Israel were a complaining and rebellious people. Exodus 14:11-12 And they said unto Moses, Because there were no graves in Egypt, hast thou taken us away to die in the wilderness? wherefore hast thou dealt thus with us, to carry us forth out of Egypt? 12 Is not this the word that we did tell thee in Egypt, saying, Let us alone, that we may serve the Egyptians? For it had been better for us to serve the Egyptians, than that we should die in the wilderness. 1

Exodus 16:27-28 And it came to pass, that there went out some of the people on the seventh day for to gather, and they found none. 28 And the LORD said unto Moses, How long refuse ye to keep my commandments and my laws? Exodus 17:1-3 And all the congregation of the children of Israel journeyed from the wilderness of Sin, after their journeys, according to the commandment of the LORD, and pitched in Rephidim: and there was no water for the people to drink. 2 Wherefore the people did chide with Moses, and said, Give us water that we may drink. And Moses said unto them, Why chide ye with me? wherefore do ye tempt the LORD? 3 And the people thirsted there for water; and the people murmured against Moses, and said, Wherefore is this that thou hast brought us up out of Egypt, to kill us and our children and our cattle with thirst? Yet under Moses' leadership, 'by faith the people passed through the Red Sea'. Exodus 12:37,38 And the children of Israel journeyed from Rameses to Succoth, about six hundred thousand on foot that were men, beside children. 38 And a mixed multitude went up also with them; and flocks, and herds, even very much cattle. and 51 And it came to pass the selfsame day, that the LORD did bring the children of Israel out of the land of Egypt by their armies. and the beginning of chapter 14, and try to picture this nation leaving Egypt There were probably about 2.5 million of them, and the Lord led them. Look up Exodus 13:20-22 And they took their journey from Succoth, and encamped in Etham, in the edge of the wilderness. 21 And the LORD went before them by day in a pillar of a cloud, to lead them the way; and by night in a pillar of fire, to give them light; to go by day and night: 22 He took not away the pillar of the cloud by day, nor the pillar of fire by night, from before the people. Picture them being pursued by Pharaoh and his army. Exodus 14:1-9 And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying, 2 Speak unto the children of Israel, that they turn and encamp before Pihahiroth, between Migdol and the sea, over against Baalzephon: before it shall ye encamp by the sea. 3 For Pharaoh will say of the children of Israel, They are entangled in the land, the wilderness hath shut them in. 4 And I will harden Pharaoh's heart, that he shall follow after them; and I will be 2

honoured upon Pharaoh, and upon all his host; that the Egyptians may know that I am the LORD. And they did so. 5 And it was told the king of Egypt that the people fled: and the heart of Pharaoh and of his servants was turned against the people, and they said, Why have we done this, that we have let Israel go from serving us? 6 And he made ready his chariot, and took his people with him: 7 And he took six hundred chosen chariots, and all the chariots of Egypt, and captains over every one of them. 8 And the LORD hardened the heart of Pharaoh king of Egypt, and he pursued after the children of Israel: and the children of Israel went out with an high hand. 9 But the Egyptians pursued after them, all the horses and chariots of Pharaoh, and his horsemen, and his army, and overtook them encamping by the sea, beside Pihahiroth, before Baalzephon. This vast multitude of people hemmed in, with the Red Sea in front of them and the enemy behind them. Little wonder that they were afraid and that in their dilemma they prayed for help. Exodus 14:10 And when Pharaoh drew nigh, the children of Israel lifted up their eyes, and, behold, the Egyptians marched after them; and they were sore afraid: and the children of Israel cried out unto the LORD. compare with Jonah 1:5-14 Then the mariners were afraid, and cried every man unto his god, and cast forth the wares that were in the ship into the sea, to lighten it of them. But Jonah was gone down into the sides of the ship; and he lay, and was fast asleep. 6 So the shipmaster came to him, and said unto him, What meanest thou, O sleeper? arise, call upon thy God, if so be that God will think upon us, that we perish not. 7 And they said every one to his fellow, Come, and let us cast lots, that we may know for whose cause this evil is upon us. So they cast lots, and the lot fell upon Jonah. 8 Then said they unto him, Tell us, we pray thee, for whose cause this evil is upon us; What is thine occupation? and whence comest thou? what is thy country? and of what people art thou? 9 And he said unto them, I am an Hebrew; and I fear the LORD, the God of heaven, which hath made the sea and the dry land. 10 Then were the men exceedingly afraid, and said unto him, Why hast thou done this? For the men knew that he fled from the presence of the LORD, because he had told them. 11 Then said they unto him, What shall we do unto thee, that the sea may be calm unto us? for the sea wrought, and was tempestuous. 12 And he said unto them, Take me up, and cast me forth into the sea; so shall the sea be calm unto you: for I know that for my sake this great tempest is upon you. 13 Nevertheless the men rowed hard to bring it to the land; but they could not: for the sea wrought, and was tempestuous against them. 14 Wherefore they cried unto the LORD, and said, We beseech thee, O LORD, we beseech thee, let us not perish for this man's life, and lay not upon us innocent blood: for thou, O LORD, hast done as it pleased thee. 3

How utterly impossible the situation was! But as has been said, 'Man's extremity is God's opportunity'. In this victory over Pharaoh and his army at the Red Sea, we shall notice some of the characteristics of the victory of faith. 1. A VICTORIOUS FAITH IS A FAITH WHICH IS GREATER THAN ANY FEARS. Notice the first three words which Moses spoke to the Children of Israel - recorded in Exodus 14:13 And Moses said unto the people, Fear ye not, stand still, and see the salvation of the LORD, which he will show to you to day: for the Egyptians whom ye have seen to day, ye shall see them again no more for ever. How natural for them to be fearful! Indeed, how fearful we would have been had we been part of that great company; and yet if our trust is in God, how unreasonable and how unnecessary it is for us ever to be fearful. It has been said that in the Bible there are 366 'Fear not (or similar expressions) one for every day of the year, including Leap Year! A victorious faith banishes fear, for fear and faith cannot live together. So let us learn so to trust in God that we are able to say. Isaiah 12:2 Behold, God is my salvation; I will trust, and not be afraid: for the LORD JEHOVAH is my strength and my song; he also is become my salvation. If you are fearful now, remember that faith banishes fear. 2. A VICTORIOUS FAITH STANDS STILL AND TRUSTS GOD TO WORK. We learn this from Exodus 14:13-14 And Moses said unto the people, Fear ye not, stand still, and see the salvation of the LORD, which he will show to you to day: for the Egyptians whom ye have seen to day, ye shall see them again no more for ever. 14 The LORD shall fight for you, and ye shall hold your peace. How difficult it is when we are hemmed in', when we are in 'a cul-de-sac', to do absolutely nothing - see verse 13, and to say nothing -see verse 14! It is always much easier to prepare to fight our Egyptians, and to try to 'bridge' our Red Sea, than it is simply to wait and do nothing except trust. But a victorious faith leaves the whole issue in the hands of God. His is the power and His is the victory; and faith stands in His victory and says. 1 Corinthians 15:57 But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. 4

Are you hemmed in at the moment, in a kind of cul-de-sac? Look to the Lord and trust Him to deliver you, and He most certainly will. 3. A VICTORIOUS FAITH IS READY TO FINISH PRAYING AND TO GO INTO ACTION. We learn from Exodus 14:15 And the LORD said unto Moses, Wherefore criest thou unto me? speak unto the children of Israel, that they go forward: that there comes a time when praying has to stop and action has to be taken. There are some people who go on praying when they should be doing. Prayer is not wrong, and we must always begin by praying; but when the Lord has revealed His will to us through prayer, the next step is to do His will, to do what He says. The Lord had told Moses to 'go forward', and there was only one thing to do, and that was to obey Him. Is it possible that you are still praying about something that you should now be doing, because God has answered your prayer and has shown you His will, so there is no need for further prayer? What is now needed is action. 4. A VICTORIOUS FAITH STEPS OUT ON THE IMPOSSIBLE. How thrilling it is to read Exodus 14:21 And Moses stretched out his hand over the sea; and the LORD caused the sea to go back by a strong east wind all that night, and made the sea dry land, and the waters were divided. When Moses stretched out his hand he was demonstrating his absolute confidence and his faith in God and in His promise, the very promise which is recorded in Exodus 14:16 But lift thou up thy rod, and stretch out thine hand over the sea, and divide it: and the children of Israel shall go on dry ground through the midst of the sea. Humanly speaking, the situation was quite impossible; but 'faith laughs at impossibilities and cries, "It shall be done' So Moses obeyed God, impossible as the whole situation seemed; and as he stretched out his hand the Lord came into action. If there Is some seemingly impossible Red Sea situation in your life, the Lord can do the same for you. All He asks is that you trust Him, and then, when the time comes, that you step out in faith - in humble reliance upon Him and in obedience to His Word. 5

5. A VICTORIOUS FAITH ENDURES TO THE END. In Exodus 14:22 And the children of Israel went into the midst of the sea upon the dry ground: and the waters were a wall unto them on their right hand, and on their left. we have a picture of God's people passing through the Red Sea, and we can just imagine what faith they needed, not only to step out - but to step in, to step on and to step through! Indeed, every step of the way they needed to trust in the Lord. Fear said, 'Suppose these walls of water collapse and we are all drowned!'; but Faith replied, 'They cannot, for God has spoken and He is faithful. Numbers 23:19 God is not a man, that he should lie; neither the son of man, that he should repent: hath he said, and shall he not do it? or hath he spoken, and shall he not make it good? Relate it to your own situation of straitened circumstances and need. God will never let you down! In concluding this study let us ask the question: What are the results of a victorious faith? In other words, when in our Red Sea situations we banish our fear because we realise how great the Lord is, and we took to Him to work for us, and we ask Him for His undertaking, and we do His bidding, and we step out in faith and go on in faith, then what is the result of all this? (1) First, the Lord's Name is honoured. To get the force of this read Exodus 14:17-18 And I, behold, I will harden the hearts of the Egyptians, and they shall follow them: and I will get me honour upon Pharaoh, and upon all his host, upon his chariots, and upon his horsemen. 18 And the Egyptians shall know that I am the LORD, when I have gotten me honour upon Pharaoh, upon his chariots, and upon his horsemen. 25 And took off their chariot wheels, that they drave them heavily: so that the Egyptians said, Let us flee from the face of Israel; for the LORD fighteth for them against the Egyptians. Exodus 15:1-19 Then sang Moses and the children of Israel this song unto the LORD, and spake, saying, I will sing unto the LORD, for he hath triumphed gloriously: the horse and his rider hath he thrown into the sea. 2 The LORD is my strength and song, and he is become my salvation: he is my God, and I will prepare him an habitation; my father's God, and I will exalt him. 3 The LORD is a man of 6

7 war: the LORD is his name. 4 Pharaoh's chariots and his host hath he cast into the sea: his chosen captains also are drowned in the Red sea. 5 The depths have covered them: they sank into the bottom as a stone. 6 Thy right hand, O LORD, is become glorious in power: thy right hand, O LORD, hath dashed in pieces the enemy. 7 And in the greatness of thine excellency thou hast overthrown them that rose up against thee: thou sentest forth thy wrath, which consumed them as stubble. 8 And with the blast of thy nostrils the waters were gathered together, the floods stood upright as an heap, and the depths were congealed in the heart of the sea. 9 The enemy said, I will pursue, I will overtake, I will divide the spoil; my lust shall be satisfied upon them; I will draw my sword, my hand shall destroy them. 10 Thou didst blow with thy wind, the sea covered them: they sank as lead in the mighty waters. 11 Who is like unto thee, O LORD, among the gods? who is like thee, glorious in holiness, fearful in praises, doing wonders? 12 Thou stretchedst out thy right hand, the earth swallowed them. 13 Thou in thy mercy hast led forth the people which thou hast redeemed: thou hast guided them in thy strength unto thy holy habitation. 14 The people shall hear, and be afraid: sorrow shall take hold on the inhabitants of Palestina. 15 Then the dukes of Edom shall be amazed; the mighty men of Moab, trembling shall take hold upon them; all the inhabitants of Canaan shall melt away. 16 Fear and dread shall fall upon them; by the greatness of thine arm they shall be as still as a stone; till thy people pass over, O LORD, till the people pass over, which thou hast purchased. 17 Thou shalt bring them in, and plant them in the mountain of thine inheritance, in the place, O LORD, which thou hast made for thee to dwell in, in the Sanctuary, O Lord, which thy hands have established. 18 The LORD shall reign for ever and ever. 19 For the horse of Pharaoh went in with his chariots and with his horsemen into the sea, and the LORD brought again the waters of the sea upon them; but the children of Israel went on dry land in the midst of the sea. (2) Second, the people of God are delivered. Look again at Exodus 14:29-30 But the children of Israel walked upon dry land in the midst of the sea; and the waters were a wall unto them on their right hand, and on their left. 30 Thus the LORD saved Israel that day out of the hand of the Egyptians; and Israel saw the Egyptians dead upon the sea shore. notice that in Exodus verse 31 And Israel saw that great work which the LORD did upon the Egyptians: and the people feared the LORD, and believed the LORD, and his servant Moses. the people's faith was greatly increased as they saw God working mightily on their behalf. (3) Third, the powers of darkness are overthrown. We see this in Exodus 14:27-28 And Moses stretched forth his hand over the sea, and the sea returned to his strength when the morning appeared;

8 and the Egyptians fled against it; and the LORD overthrew the Egyptians in the midst of the sea. 28 And the waters returned, and covered the chariots, and the horsemen, and all the host of Pharaoh that came into the sea after them; there remained not so much as one of them. Exodus 15:1-8 Then sang Moses and the children of Israel this song unto the LORD, and spake, saying, I will sing unto the LORD, for he hath triumphed gloriously: the horse and his rider hath he thrown into the sea. 2 The LORD is my strength and song, and he is become my salvation: he is my God, and I will prepare him an habitation; my father's God, and I will exalt him. 3 The LORD is a man of war: the LORD is his name. 4 Pharaoh's chariots and his host hath he cast into the sea: his chosen captains also are drowned in the Red sea. 5 The depths have covered them: they sank into the bottom as a stone. 6 Thy right hand, O LORD, is become glorious in power: thy right hand, O LORD, hath dashed in pieces the enemy. 7 And in the greatness of thine excellency thou hast overthrown them that rose up against thee: thou sentest forth thy wrath, which consumed them as stubble. 8 And with the blast of thy nostrils the waters were gathered together, the floods stood upright as an heap, and the depths were congealed in the heart of the sea. compare Ephesians 6:10-17 Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might. 11 Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. 12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. 13 Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. 14 Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness; 15 And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace; 16 Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked. 17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God: 1 John 5:4 For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith.
