Lesson 1 abraham and sarah receive god s promises Four stories comprise today s lesson about Abraham s meeting and relationship with God. SUMMARY OF TODAY S STORY In the first story, the Lord tells Abram to leave his country and go to the land to which the Lord directs him, promising that through him a nation will rise up and be blessed. Abram obeys without question. In the second story, God repeats this promise, even though Abram reminds God that he has no heir. God then makes a covenant (a binding agreement) with Abram as a sure sign of God s promise. At another time, when Abram (now Abraham) is 100 years old and still without an heir with his wife Sarah, three messengers of the Lord appear to him and again promise a son. They also warn Abraham about the coming destruction of the evil cities of Sodom and Gomorrah, while Abraham receives a promise from God that God will spare the city if there are as few as ten righteous people. Genesis 19, an optional reading, describes the destruction of these cities. Where You ll Find Today s Story In the Bible We recommend the New Revised Standard Version Bible. Genesis 12:1-9 (Abram is called to Canaan) Genesis 15:1-21 (God promises a son and land) Genesis 18:1-33 (Abraham s three guests) Genesis 19:1-29 (optional: Sodom and Gomorrah) In Our Sunday Lectionary Today s story is told in church on the following Sundays: Year A: Second Sunday in Lent; Proper 5; Proper 6 Year C: Second Sunday in Lent; Proper 11; KEY CONCEPTS Hearing God s Call Obeying God s Call Blessings of God s Call

2 Lesson 1 ABRAHAM AND SARAH RECEIVE GOD S PROMISE Weaving TOGETHER THE FAMILY OF GOD, YEAR 2 WEAVING OUR STORY WITH THE BIBLICAL STORY In the story of Abraham and Sarah, we see the beginning of God s call to us as God s people. And we also see why it is that Abraham and Sarah are called. Abraham is the ideal man of trust, faith and obedience. Sarah, as his spouse, mirrors the complexity of a strong relationship; she is faithful but not unthinkingly submissive; rather, she is both strong and weak, faithful and independent. Abraham and Sarah are asked by God to cut themselves off from their entire past in order to follow God. The Bible says nothing about Abraham s feelings about this call, only that Abram went. We of course know nothing about how Sarah might have reacted to this seemingly arbitrary change in their lives. However, we can imagine that the leaving must have been hard. A call or demand from God can be difficult. But God will provide for us, God s people, just as God provided for Abraham, Sarah and their family. Remember the lesson that we have learned from our story of salvation (in Weaving Our Faith, Year 1): God stays with us, no matter what. Why Abraham and Sarah? Abraham at least is ready to do what God asks of him. We assume that God also trusts Sarah to do the same. Abraham must have cultivated in himself the habit of listening to God, for when God asked, Abram went. And he has cultivated the kinds of thoughts and feelings that lead him toward the higher good. He does not insist that his property, or his possessions, or even his relatives, are too important to leave behind in order to follow God. He has been living his life aware of the higher priorities, so that when he is called to make a decision, he knows how to respond. His heart and his mind, and his soul, are predisposed toward God. God s call to him, and his response to God, is not made at random. We too need to cultivate that kind of predisposition to God and to the good, for God will call us also. If we are ready, then we will be able to hear. Sarah s relationship with God is different, and lived out through her relationship with Abraham. Sometimes we too, like Sarah, are faithful companions that make it possible for others to fulfill more completely their calling in life. Still, Sarah was not an invisible presence but a powerful figure who protected the promise made to her by God. From her protective stance, we might learn a lesson about what it means to defend our spiritual inheritance and the gifts that God has given to us. Such defense of God s promises is at the root of good stewardship and good relationship with God. We too are blessed in our relationship with God and in the strength we receive from God. We are blessed to be part of the family of God. For once we were no people, but now we are God s people, says Peter (1 Peter 2:10). Abraham and Sarah may also realize that in the blessings they receive, they will be a blessing for others. Their sacrifice in leaving their homeland, although a great cost to them, will ultimately find fulfillment in the creation of a holy people dedicated to God. But they do not know this immediately. In fact, they need to be reassured periodically of God s promise. But they still trust that God is leading them, and they are ready to obey even when they do not yet see the results of that promise. We find that same trusting obedience and sacrifice in Isaiah s suffering servant of humankind, of whom we find the fulfillment in Jesus Christ s obedience and sacrifice on the cross. So Abraham and Sarah s trust, faith and obedience to God show us how to listen for God and obey, even when the call is difficult. The blessing we receive is closeness with God and knowing that following God s ways of love and righteousness will be a blessing to others, even if we do not see it.

3 Lesson 1 ABRAHAM AND SARAH RECEIVE GOD S PROMISE Weaving TOGETHER THE FAMILY OF GOD, YEAR 2 Note: In the dialogue that Abraham has with the divine messenger about the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah, God agrees to spare the two cities if God finds as few as ten righteous men living there. We may ask, why did Abraham not push farther? Why not five or two good men? But later in the story, we find out why. With a number fewer than ten, those few good people can be led out of the city to freedom, just as Lot and his family were led out by the angels. THE EPISCOPAL THREAD One of the distinctive characteristics of the Anglican ethos is the recognition that, like Abraham, we don t always receive answers to our questions, even when God comes to meet and to call upon us. In fact, the Prayer Book s Morning Prayer can be seen as a daily response to God s call to us, a response of trusting in God s daily guidance. In one of the calland-response prayers, we pray (BCP, p. 98): Lord, show us your love and mercy; For we put our trust in you. And at the end of the day, in the service of Compline, the bedtime prayer of the Church, we acknowledge our own uncertainties and put our trust in the sure presence and guidance of God (BCP, p. 133): Be present, O merciful God, and protect us through the hours of this night, so that we who are wearied by the changes and chances of this life may rest in your eternal changelessness... continues to God s calling of us, the Body of Christ, to worship and serve God every day. In this first patriarch, God made a promise and a covenant. The practice of covenants with God our Creator continues as we participate in the Holy Eucharist each Sunday, re-enacting the time when Jesus said to his disciples as he passed the cup of wine to them, This is my blood of the New Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Each time that we share in this cup, we reconfirm that New Covenant and make it ours. When we are baptized, we promise to live a life in Christ, making five vows that comprise our Baptismal Covenant. We renew these promises for ourselves every time someone in our church is baptized. In these promises and in God s care for us, we are assured that now we are God s people. GATHERING Check-In Invite the group members to sit comfortably, giving them an opportunity to visit with each other, establish friendships and build community. Relationships are an important dimension of Christian formation, so a few minutes of visiting will enrich their spiritual development. This is also the perfect time to check in with your group members by asking them to share how they are feeling at the time or what kind of a week they had. Another lesson from Abraham and Sarah s life that has been woven into the Episcopal and Anglican ethos is the attitude of thanksgiving for God s blessings. The Anglican faith is an incarnational faith, seeing God s blessings in all of daily life. The Eucharistic prayers (Eucharist = Thanksgiving) begin with thanks to God, for example, for the goodness and love which you have made known to us in creation; in the calling of Israel to be your people... (BCP, p. 368). This calling began with Abraham and batches cross Prayer Materials: small table with cloth to cover it taper candle or one pillar candle

4 Lesson 1 ABRAHAM AND SARAH RECEIVE GOD S PROMISE Weaving TOGETHER THE FAMILY OF GOD, YEAR 2 After all the group members have a few minutes of fellowship time, gather them together for a simple opening prayer. Ask one of the members to light the candle(s) while saying these words from Psalm 119:105: Your word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path. Explain that you are inviting the light of God to be with all of you. (You might consider posting that reading in the meeting room.) Invite the member who lit the candle to read this prayer: Dearest Lord, We hear your daily call to us. We trust that you know what is right for us. We have faith in what you ask of us, and we rejoice in the blessings we receive when we answer your call. For calling us, we thank you in Jesus name. Amen. Or you may use any prayer from the Prayer Book or from any book of prayers, or make one up yourself. Carefully extinguish the candle. TELLING THE STORY Set the Scene: Once the group has settled down, ask the following question: How important is a promise to you whether you or someone else made it? Give group members a few minutes to absorb and think about the question and to formulate some answers. Be ready to expand on some of their ideas! Explain that today you will be talking about a type of promise known as a covenant. Read the story from a Bible or tell the story in your own words, using visual aids or interactive drama, if you wish, to make the story come alive. The Appendix includes suggestions for storytelling. The idea of covenant, and especially the covenant between God and Abraham, is very important. You may need to define the word covenant for the youth. It is a binding agreement between two parties. This covenant is God s promise not only to Abraham and Sarah but also to all of us as God s people. Bible stories are powerful in themselves. There is no need at this point either to analyze the stories or to try to find a teaching lesson. Let the impact of the stories themselves sink into the hearts and minds of the youth.

5 Lesson 1 ABRAHAM AND SARAH RECEIVE GOD S PROMISE Weaving TOGETHER THE FAMILY OF GOD, YEAR 2 Activities for This Week s Session ACTIVITIES: ARTS, CRAFTS, GAMES, DRAMA, ETC. Select one or more activities to supplement and enhance today s story. For each lesson, there are five suggested activities, one from each of the REACT categories. For a detailed explanation of REACT, see page 10 of the Introduction. All activities are meant to reinforce the concepts that were central to the day s lesson. Additional activity ideas can be found on pages 2-6 in the Appendix where we ve provided suggestions and directions for a variety of general activities (craft recipes, music, drama) that can be adapted to any lesson. Also included are outreach and service projects that can be done at any time. WEAVING THE FAMILY OF GOD Lesson Box Materials: 1 3" x 5" index card for the day s scribe pen or pencil a file box in which to store the cards Ask for a volunteer or assign a student to act as class scribe. Then, ask the group to articulate the most important lesson gleaned from the day s reading. As a prompt, you might ask: Choose a word: faith, trust, obedience, blessing. What does the word mean to you? How can we ready ourselves to hear God s call? How do you imagine that call might sound/feel/ look? Once the class has agreed on its wording, ask the scribe to write the lesson on the card, date it and file it in the box. By the end of the year, you will have a wonderful and thorough summation of the lessons covered in the participants own words.

6 Lesson 1 ABRAHAM AND SARAH RECEIVE GOD S PROMISE Weaving TOGETHER THE FAMILY OF GOD, YEAR 2 CLOSING PRAYER Before the group leaves, gather them together for a closing prayer and dismissal to send them into the church worship service or back to their homes in the comfort of God s love and protection of them. The prayer can be very simple, such as this one: Loving God, you promise that we are your people and that we will always belong to you. Stay with us this week, we pray, and fill us with your spirit, that we may know that you are with us always. And help us to love you and to love our family and friends and neighbors as you love us. We ask all this in Jesus name. Amen. Dismiss the group with these words from the Prayer Book: The peace of the Lord be always with you. The group responds: And also with you. SUGGESTED HYMNS Creator of the earth and skies, #148, verses 1, 2 and 4, The Hymnal, 1982 (NY: Church Publishing, 1985) In God We Trust, #55, Lift Every Voice and Sing II (NY: Church Publishing, 1993) God it Was, #85, verses 1 and 2, My Heart Sings Out (NY: Church Publishing, 2005)

RELAX AND ENJOY THE RIDE: HEARING GOD S CALL Group members take part in a relaxation/active listening exercise and talk about hearing God s call. Materials: optional: computer with Internet access or CD player and CD of soothing music poster board masking tape or poster putty large marker Preparation: Affix the poster board to the wall. Get the CD ready to play or click on the link below for access to several types of soothing music (all free on YouTube): Directions: 1. Explain that sometimes we have to quiet our surroundings to be able to relax and find peace. 2. Today, they will be taking part in some active listening. 3. Ask the group members to find comfortable places to sit or lie back. Explain that, for a few minutes, they will be listening to peaceful music/sounds while their eyes are closed. 4. Ask them to relax, breathe deeply and slowly, and to enjoy the music/sounds. 5. Then, as the music is playing, quietly give the following instructions: Listen to the music/sounds. Think about how they make you feel. If a random thought comes into your mind, just let it pass. Relax, breathe and just let thoughts come to you. 6. When the music us over, bring the group back together. Ask them to share how they felt, what they heard. If you wish, write some of their answers on the poster board. Then discuss: Who among us heard God calling them. If so, what did they hear? a whisper? a voice? an instruction? a feeling? Where were they? What was going on? What do you think being open to God s call means? How is hearing God s call different from what we just did? How would you respond if you knew you d just heard God s call? 7 Lesson 1 ABRAHAM AND SARAH RECEIVE GOD S PROMISES Weaving TOGETHER THE FAMILY OF GOD, YEAR 2 ACTIVITY

MEMORIES ON THE MOVE Participants think about having to move at a moment s notice and what they would take with them including a favorite prayer. Materials: copies of On the Move worksheets (p. 12) pens or pencils scissors business-size envelopes, one per participant Preparation: Make enough copies of the worksheet for the entire group. Directions: 1. Before handing out the worksheet, engage the group in a brief discussion about moving: Has anyone ever moved to another home? another town/city? another school? How did you feel about it? 2. Explain that today, you will be talking about how it must have felt for Abraham and Sarah to put their trust in God and suddenly move to a place God had chosen. 3. Distribute copies of the worksheet; give the members minutes to complete it. 4. Then, once all have finished, bring them back together to discuss their responses. Be sure to discuss their thoughts about the questions at the bottom of the worksheet. Close: Give each member an envelope. Ask group members to write their names on their worksheets. Store them safely. Later in the year, bring out the envelopes, distribute them to their owner. Open them together and invite discussion about their original response: Would they change any of them or would they stick with what they originally wrote? 11 Lesson 1 ABRAHAM AND SARAH RECEIVE GOD S PROMISES Weaving TOGETHER THE FAMILY OF GOD, YEAR 2 ACTIVITY

ON THE MOVE Here s the situation: God tells you and your family that you must move far away. You have just enough time to collect only one of each of the things that are most important to you. What do you choose? Fill in the chart below. Category I would take Reason for taking this Favorite item of clothing Song Book Game/Toy Photo Memory of home Recording (sounds, voices?) Family memento Special personal item Food Prayer One other your choice A few things to think about What role do trust and faith play in your decision to follow God s call? You are allowed to ask God one question. What is it? What would make you feel better about this move? 12 Lesson 1 ABRAHAM AND SARAH RECEIVE GOD S PROMISES Weaving TOGETHER THE FAMILY OF GOD, YEAR 2 ACTIVITY continued

HEAR TRUST OBEY: ACROSTIC POEMS Group members write descriptive acrostic poems about a character or event from the stories of Abraham and Sarah. Materials: writing paper pens or pencils markers or colored pencils Directions: 1. Invite group members to think about the words hear, trust and obey or to select one or more characters, places or events from the stories of Abraham and Sarah, for example, Abraham, Sarah, covenant, many heirs, moving, faithful, frightening, trusting, spouses, etc. 2. Instruct group members to write the word they have chosen vertically down the left side of a sheet of paper. 3. They will then use each letter of that word to start another word, phrase or sentence that relates to the person, place or event that they ve written vertically down the page, thus creating an acrostic poem. Here are two examples, using the words trust and Sarah: To follow God s call can be difficult. Right now, I don t know if I d be able to do what Abraham and Sarah did. Understanding what s expected of me sometimes makes me confused Still, I have faith that people who love me want the best for me Total trust is a giant leap of faith! She was a strong woman in her own right All they had known they had to leave behind Righteous people in Sodom and Gomorrah would be saved Always trusted that God had their best interests at heart Her name will remind us of an independent, faithful woman Close: Collect the poems and post them in the meeting space or in a spot where the entire congregation can enjoy them. 13 Lesson 1 ABRAHAM AND SARAH RECEIVE GOD S PROMISES Weaving TOGETHER THE FAMILY OF GOD, YEAR 2 ACTIVITY

AS MANY BLESSINGS AS THERE ARE STARS IN THE SKY In this activity, group members will engage the congregation in creating a display of personal blessings that, like Abraham s heirs, would be as numerous as all the stars in the heavens. Materials: sheets of card stock in assorted colors scissors several pens or pencils masking tape banner on which you have written the title As Many Blessings As There Are Stars in the Sky Preparation: Enlist the aid of several group members to cut stars out of card stock. Depending on the size of your congregation, you could need several dozen to a hundred or more. Make arrangements for one of the group members to explain the purpose of the stars during the service. Directions: 1. Decide whether you want your group members to hand out the stars as people enter the church, or to place stars with pens or pencils on the seats/pews. 2. At some point during the service, ask the congregation members to think about their many blessings in life and to choose one to write on the star. 3. Remind the congregation of the covenant God made with Abraham regarding his heirs being as numerous as the stars in the heavens. 4. At the end of the service, instruct some of your group members to collect the stars. 5. Hang them under the banner in a common area (for example, coffee room, undercroft, memorial room, etc.) for all in the church to see and enjoy. 14 Lesson 1 ABRAHAM AND SARAH RECEIVE GOD S PROMISES Weaving TOGETHER THE FAMILY OF GOD, YEAR 2 ACTIVITY
