The Book of JOHN Chapter 1 Chapter 18: Part 1 Verses 1-24 Jesus completes His remarkable prayer for us in the garden, just in time to run into the betrayer Judas and the Temple guard. This begins what is commonly referenced as The Passion of Jesus, his arrest, trials, beatings and ultimate death on the cross. This Gospel author does not provide us with many of the details given in the other Gospel accounts, as his focus on not so much on the humanity of Jesus, but on His deity. He is God. This writer s emphasis is on showing the glory of the Savior, even through His ugly trials and suffering as a human, in our place. The last five chapters (13-17) covered a span of several hours, as Jesus celebrated the Passover with His disciples and provided their last and perhaps most important personal lessons. This chapter moves the action that night into His betrayal, arrest, and illegal trials, culminating with the people s desire to have Pilate release Barabbas to them, rather than the innocent Y Shua. Once again, it is helpful to read this account in the other Gospels just to have the details in mind. Since there is a lot of action in this chapter, we will take this in chunks in order to have a better idea of the sequence of events. For each piece of the action, we will provide the synoptic Gospel accounts. We will look separately at the following events: 1) BETRAYAL (v 1-12) 2) BEFORE THE HIGH PRIEST AND SANHEDRIN (v 13-24) 3) PETER S DENIAL (v 25-27) 4) BEFORE PILATE (v 28-40) In this part 1 of chapter 18, we will discuss only these first two events: Jesus betrayal and arrest, and His time before the High Priest, and the Jewish Council. Peter s denial, and the beginning of Jesus encounter with Pilate will be discussed in Part 2 of this lesson. BETRAYAL AND ARREST OTHER GOSPEL ACCOUNTS And while He was still speaking, behold, Judas, one of the twelve, with a great multitude with swords and clubs, came from the chief priests and elders of the people. Now His betrayer had given them a sign, saying, Whomever I kiss, He is the One; seize Him. Immediately he went up to Jesus and said, Greetings, Rabbi! and kissed Him. But Jesus said to him, Friend, why have you come? Then they came and laid hands on Jesus and took Him. And suddenly, one of those who were with Jesus stretched out his hand and drew his sword, struck the servant of the high priest, and cut off his ear. But Jesus said to him, Put your sword in its place, for all who take the sword will perish by the sword. Or do you think that I cannot now pray to My Father, and He will provide Me with more than twelve legions of angels? How then could the Scriptures be fulfilled, that it must happen thus? In that hour Jesus said to the multitudes, Have you come out, as against a robber, with swords and clubs to take Me? I sat daily with you, teaching in the temple, and you did not seize Me. 56 But all this was done that the Scriptures of the prophets might be fulfilled. Then all the disciples forsook Him and fled. (Matthew 26:47-56) RockofAges.org 1 The Book of John, Chapter 18, Part 1: Verses 1-24

And immediately, while He was still speaking, Judas, one of the twelve, with a great multitude with swords and clubs, came from the chief priests and the scribes and the elders. Now His betrayer had given them a signal, saying, Whomever I kiss, He is the One; seize Him and lead Him away safely. As soon as he had come, immediately he went up to Him and said to Him, Rabbi, Rabbi! and kissed Him. Then they laid their hands on Him and took Him. And one of those who stood by drew his sword and struck the servant of the high priest, and cut off his ear. Then Jesus answered and said to them, Have you come out, as against a robber, with swords and clubs to take Me? I was daily with you in the temple teaching, and you did not seize Me. But the Scriptures must be fulfilled. Then they all forsook Him and fled. (Mark 14:43-50) And while He was still speaking, behold, a multitude; and he who was called Judas, one of the twelve, went before them and drew near to Jesus to kiss Him. But Jesus said to him, Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss? When those around Him saw what was going to happen, they said to Him, Lord, shall we strike with the sword? And one of them struck the servant of the high priest and cut off his right ear. But Jesus answered and said, Permit even this. And He touched his ear and healed him. Then Jesus said to the chief priests, captains of the temple, and the elders who had come to Him, Have you come out, as against a robber, with swords and clubs? When I was with you daily in the temple, you did not try to seize Me. But this is your hour, and the power of darkness. (Luke 22:47-53) THE GOSPEL OF JOHN ACCOUNT 1 When Jesus had spoken these words, He went out with His disciples over the Brook Kidron, where there was a garden, which He and His disciples entered. 2 And Judas, who betrayed Him, also knew the place; for Jesus often met there with His disciples. 3 Then Judas, having received a detachment of troops, and officers from the chief priests and Pharisees, came there with lanterns, torches, and weapons. When Jesus had spoken these words,... As soon as Jesus finished His prayer, He got up and led His disciples into a familiar area. The events of this night are all captured in the Gospels so we can see it was an evening and night filled with activity for Jesus and for His disciples. The scriptures don t give us any indication that Jesus ever spent a night in the city of Jerusalem. During the last week of His life on earth He went to Bethany and stayed with His friends there (Mary, Martha, Lazarus, perhaps others), entering the city during the day only. Most likely He traveled the short distance back to Bethany in the evenings. The disciples were familiar with this route, so they followed Him as normal. Little did they know what Jesus knew. Just a few steps farther and their Master would be taken from them. He went out with His disciples over the Brook Kidron... In 2 Samuel 15 King we can read how David escaped Jerusalem by taking this same route, after being betrayed by his son, Absalom. Apparently this area, just outside the city of Jerusalem, was frequented by Jesus and His disciples. Judas knew about it, and knew to find Jesus there on this night. We don t know if Judas was given this information, or if Jesus knew (which He always did!) that this is the place Judas would appear to betray Him, and so arranged it Himself. 3 ...a detachment of troops, and officers from the chief priests and Pharisees... These troops may or may not be Roman. Some speculate they are only the Temple Guard at this point. Others say they accompanied the Temple Guard, who were clearly present at the direction of the Chief Priest and the Pharisees. The religious Jews have chosen this night to arrest Jesus. They have been plotting and scheming for months, perhaps years. The time has come for them to rid themselves of Yeshua. A detachment or band of troops at this time was about men. Matthew tells us that many others came as well. This was no small group of people. It was a crowd of soldiers, guards, officials, and onlookers. The religious Jews would have preferred taking Jesus in private, which is why they waited until night when Jesus was outside the city. However, it doesn t appear as if this moment was private at all. Probably half the city knew what was going on here, but could not stop it, even if they wanted to....came there with lanterns, torches, and weapons. These men weren t taking any chances on Jesus escaping their clutches. They came with plenty of light and weapons. It seems rather ironic that they came at night carrying torches and lanterns to arrest the Light of the World, using weapons to insure the capture of the Prince of Peace. We must understand at this point that Jesus allowed Himself to be taken. He could have chosen to escape right through them, as He did numerous times before when the crowds wanted to take Him. Jesus knows the hour has come for all of this to happen, and He willingly subjects Himself to the beginning of a night and day of horror. 4 Jesus therefore, knowing all things that would come upon Him, went forward and said to them, Whom are you seeking? 5 They answered Him, Jesus of Nazareth. Jesus said to them, I am He. And Judas, who betrayed Him, also stood with them. 6 Now when He said to them, I am He, they drew back and fell to the ground. This particular moment, a moment when Jesus allowed His glory to be seen, even if only for a split second, is not recorded in the synoptic Gospels. Remember that the other Gospel writers had various other motives for writing. For Matthew, his goal was to prove to the Israelites that Yeshua is the Messiah, the promised Lion of the Tribe of Judah in Hebrew scripture. For Mark, his purpose was to present the events of Jesus life as quickly and succinctly as possible, while also showing Him to be the servant of all mankind. Luke, the Gentile doctor, was naturally concerned with details, and provides the longest narrative with the most details of the humanity of Jesus. For the Gospel we call John, however, this writer s purpose was different. He tells us late in the book that his entire purpose for writing (which was sometime later than the others who had already captured the relevant physical details) was to present Y Shua as the Son of God, fully God, and that this knowledge would enable the reader to receive His free gift of salvation. It seems logical, then, that the writer of this Gospel would focus on this particular event, one which did in fact reveal the deity of Jesus, the Messiah. RockofAges.org 3 The Book of John, Chapter 18, Part 1: Verses 1-24

Jesus therefore, knowing all things that would come upon Him,... This is another reminder for us that Jesus was fully aware of everything He would endure during His Passion. Y Shua is not only the Son of God, HE IS GOD. He knows the end from the beginning. He knows every moment of His suffering, even before it happens on our timeline. Jesus said to them, I am He. Jesus is not only identifying Himself as the one these men were looking for, but His response, I am He, is actually merely I AM. The He is added into our English translations. As He responded, He is literally saying, I EXIST. I AM. This, as we know, is the Greek wording for the Hebrew YHWH the name of God, which means I am that I am, or I AM. This simple response has a powerful dual meaning, and in that split second, Jesus allowed the truth of this to be physically manifested at that moment. Now when He said to them, I am He, they drew back and fell to the ground. There it is! A simple statement, but can you imagine what this looked like? As soon as Jesus uttered these words, it s as if His glory could not be contained and in a flash was experienced by this gathered crowd. Their response? Exactly what it is for any human to actually glimpse the glory of God. They fell to the ground! No one can stand in the presence of His glory. This is a demonstration, a very minor one, of the power of Jesus the power of God Himself. And yet another powerful indicator that Jesus went to His death willingly. He could have walked away here, untouched. But He chose to stay, and die. It seems even more remarkable that in that moment, these people did not run away as fast as they could. They came to arrest a man. Instead, they are some of the few to ever experience the incredible glory of God, even for just a brief moment. For those who intended evil, it seems that this should have sent them packing in a hurry! They should have known that this was no mere man. God is the one who kept them in this place, able to do what they came to do, since these events had been ordained from the beginning of our world, from the very foundation of our existence. This falling was not an act of worship; it was the result of fear and terror, and the inevitable result of seeing the glory of our God. For the briefest of moments Jesus showed that He was the one in charge, He was the one with the real power, and that they could not do what they came to do without His permission. He was orchestrating His own death. Imagine the complete chaos and confusion at this moment. It seems miraculous alone that they actually did indeed stay to arrest Him. The next verses make it appear as if everything was normal again. There is no other mention of this event. But for a split second God ripped apart the physical world to reveal the spiritual dimension where He is the Almighty One. 7 Then He asked them again, Whom are you seeking? And they said, Jesus of Nazareth. 8 Jesus answered, I have told you that I am He. Therefore, if you seek Me, let these go their way, 9 that the saying might be fulfilled which He spoke, Of those whom You gave Me I have lost none. 10 Then Simon Peter, having a sword, drew it and struck the high priest s servant, and cut off his right ear. The servant s name was Malchus. 11 So Jesus said to Peter, Put your sword into the sheath. Shall I not drink the cup which My Father has given Me? Jesus pulls this confusion back to its earthly and evil purpose. He asks them again who they are looking for. They actually had the presence of mind to answer Him. Now He states His own request, in order to fulfill His own prayerful plea to His Father: Therefore, if you seek Me, let these go their way, that the saying might be fulfilled which He spoke, Of those whom You gave Me I have lost none. Jesus is protecting His tired and confused disciples here. He could easily have sent them somewhere else by a mere word alone. But the displays of His power and glory will not be seen again until His resurrection. RockofAges.org 4 The Book of John, Chapter 18, Part 1: Verses 1-24

Then Simon Peter, having a sword, drew it and struck the high priest s servant, and cut off his right ear. Good old Peter! We can always count on him to react impulsively. But he also shows courage and loyalty, even if it is not the correct response here. He does whatever he can to defend his Messiah and Master. It seems obvious that Peter s occupation is better spent in fishing, rather than in swordplay. His wild swing caught this poor guy s ear, a wound that would hurt and disfigure, but not kill. The other Gospels tell us that Jesus chastised Peter and then went on to heal this wounded man and restore his ear. Remarkably, this crowd has now seen two mighty displays of the power of the man they came to arrest. They have seen His glory and fell back to the ground. They have witnessed Him touch and heal an ear that had been cut off. It would be interesting to know what these people did with this information later. Did they become believers? They were privileged to see two miraculous demonstrations of Yeshua s true power, in a few short moments. Jesus had earlier advised the disciples to carry a sword, but it was for their protection. This was common in these times when walking outside at night or traveling on the roads populated by bandits was hazardous to your health. Jesus did not intend for them to use the sword to defend Him. He could easily do that Himself, as they should have known (having witnessed this many times before). No, He would not be defended. He would willingly submit to standing in our place, a place of guilt and conviction, and death. When God has a plan, we are wise to abide by it, to allow Him to direct us, and not fight what is the will of God. The servant s name was Malchus. This is an interesting little aside statement. So what do we care what this man missing an ear is called? Why do we need to know his name? Everything is in scripture for a purpose. This is the only place his name is mentioned. Malchus is Greek for the Hebrew Malchos. Malchos is from the Hebrew melek. This man is an Israelite. And melek means king. Could Jesus be making another statement here? This human king (Malchus) was wounded, but not fatally. He was restored to full health. The true King of the Jews, as Pilate would inscribe on Jesus cross, will be wounded as well. His wound would indeed be fatal, but not forever. He would be healed and restored, resurrected to life. It is possible Jesus is giving a mini-object lesson here. He has the power to heal, and to restore life, even His own. He is indeed HaMalek or the King. Shall I not drink the cup which My Father has given Me? This isn t really a question. Peter and all the disciples, after spending so much time with Jesus, watching as He performed one miracle after another, should have known what was happening here. In some ways, this is Jesus rebuking Peter once again. Don t you know what I am doing, Peter? This is what I came for! This is what MUST happen for you to be saved and have eternal life! I am doing this because I love you, I want you with me. Are you asking me not to do this? Scripture speaks of several different cups. We have the cup of salvation, the cup of consolation, the cup of consummation, the cup of joy, the cup of abundance ( my cup runs over ), the cup of wrath, the cup of anger. The cup is referenced and understood as a portion, lot or will. When Jesus speaks of a cup here, it actually has many meanings. This is God s cup or will for Him. It is His allotment or portion, what He has and will have or do. It contains God s plan for our salvation, but Jesus is the One who drank it. This means we will not have to drink God s cup of wrath or anger, but we will share the cup of joy and the cup of consummation with Jesus in the Kingdom of Heaven. 6 WITH THE HIGH PRIEST, SANHEDRIN AND JEWISH COUNCIL OTHER GOSPEL ACCOUNTS And those who had laid hold of Jesus led Him away to Caiaphas the high priest, where the scribes and the elders were assembled. But Peter followed Him at a distance to the high priest s courtyard. And he went in and sat with the servants to see the end. Now the chief priests, the elders, and all the council sought false testimony against Jesus to put Him to death, but found none. Even though many false witnesses came forward, they found none. But at last two false witnesses came forward and said, This fellow said, I am able to destroy the temple of God and to build it in three days. And the high priest arose and said to Him, Do You answer nothing? What is it these men testify against You? But Jesus kept silent. And the high priest answered and said to Him, I put You under oath by the living God: Tell us if You are the Christ, the Son of God! Jesus said to him, It is as you said. Nevertheless, I say to you, hereafter you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Power, and coming on the clouds of heaven. Then the high priest tore his clothes, saying, He has spoken blasphemy! What further need do we have of witnesses? Look, now you have heard His blasphemy! What do you think? They answered and said, He is deserving of death. Then they spat in His face and beat Him; and others struck Him with the palms of their hands, saying, Prophesy to us, Christ! Who is the one who struck You? (Matthew 26:57-68) And they led Jesus away to the high priest; and with him were assembled all the chief priests, the elders, and the scribes. But Peter followed Him at a distance, right into the courtyard of the high priest. And he sat with the servants and warmed himself at the fire. Now the chief priests and all the council sought testimony against Jesus to put Him to death, but found none. For many bore false witness against Him, but their testimonies did not agree. Then some rose up and bore false witness against Him, saying, We heard Him say, I will destroy this temple made with hands, and within three days I will build another made without hands. But not even then did their testimony agree. And the high priest stood up in the midst and asked Jesus, saying, Do You answer nothing? What is it these men testify against You? But He kept silent and answered nothing. Again the high priest asked Him, saying to Him, Are You the Christ, the Son of the Blessed? Jesus said, I am. And you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Power, and coming with the clouds of heaven. Then the high priest tore his clothes and said, What further need do we have of witnesses? You have heard the blasphemy! What do you think? And they all condemned Him to be deserving of death. Then some began to spit on Him, and to blindfold Him, and to beat Him, and to say to Him, Prophesy! And the officers struck Him with the palms of their hands. (Mark 14:55-65) Having arrested Him, they led Him and brought Him into the high priest s house. But Peter followed at a distance... Now the men who held Jesus mocked Him and beat Him. And having blindfolded Him, they struck Him on the face and asked Him, saying, Prophesy! Who is the one who struck You? And many other things they blasphemously spoke against Him. As soon as it was day, the elders of the people, both chief priests and scribes, came together and led Him into their council, saying, If You are the Christ, tell us. But He said to them, If I tell you, you will by no means believe. And if I also ask you, you will by no means answer Me or let Me go. Hereafter the Son of Man will sit on the right hand of the power of God. Then they all said, Are You then the Son of God? So He said to them, You rightly say that I am. And they said, What further testimony do we need? For we have heard it ourselves from His own mouth. (Luke 22:54, 63-71) THE GOSPEL OF JOHN ACCOUNT 12 Then the detachment of troops and the captain and the officers of the Jews arrested Jesus and bound Him. 13 And they led Him away to Annas first, for he was the father-in-law of Caiaphas who was high priest that year. 14 Now it was Caiaphas who advised the Jews that it was expedient that one man should die for the people....and bound Him. If this were not so sad, it would almost be humorous. These men have been knocked to the ground by the glory of God, witnessed the restoration and healing of a man s missing ear, and still they bind Jesus. Talk about completely ridiculous. These bindings could not hold God! These people are blinded. They have seen with their eyes, but not with their hearts. They bound the very One who could set them free for all eternity. RockofAges.org 6 The Book of John, Chapter 18, Part 1: Verses 1-24

And they led Him away to Annas first, for he was the father-in-law of Caiaphas who was high priest that year. This little detail about Annas is only provided in this Gospel. Annas was the previous High Priest, and the father-in-law of the current High Priest at this time, Caiaphas. This retired High Priest is probably still sort of running the show so to speak. He still holds a place of honor, and may have been the one who ordered Jesus arrest to begin with. We have some information from secular history about Annas. He was said to be one of the most educated, smart and clever (not in a good way!), and EVIL of all the High Priests. We need to remember that at this point, the hereditary priesthood (the tribe of Levi, family of Aaron, or what we call the Aaronic priesthood ) that God ordained is not in place, no longer functioning. The position of High Priest at this time was appointed by Rome, at their whim, usually to the highest bidder. It was a high political position of power, rather than a sacred spiritual and hereditary position as God intended. Annas seems to be the one with the real power here. Perhaps Caiaiphas takes his orders from Annas, as a puppet priest. Annas is probably the one who could devise a way to charge Jesus with something that would get Him executed by Rome. He knew that Rome would not allow the Jews to put anyone to death. That privilege was strictly Rome s. The trial of Jesus at the hands of Annas and his puppet Caiaphas was illegal from the beginning, a true mockery and an illustration of the corrupt priesthood at that time. Now it was Caiaphas who advised the Jews that it was expedient that one man should die for the people. Mention is made here of the prophecy made by Caiaphas, unbeknownst to him. We were told about this in John 11, as the religious Jews plotted Jesus demise after He raised Lazarus from the dead: Then many of the Jews who had come to Mary, and had seen the things Jesus did, believed in Him. But some of them went away to the Pharisees and told them the things Jesus did. Then the chief priests and the Pharisees gathered a council and said, What shall we do? For this Man works many signs. If we let Him alone like this, everyone will believe in Him, and the Romans will come and take away both our place and nation. And one of them, Caiaphas, being high priest that year, said to them, You know nothing at all, nor do you consider that it is expedient for us that one man should die for the people, and not that the whole nation should perish. Now this he did not say on his own authority; but being high priest that year he prophesied that Jesus would die for the nation, and not for that nation only, but also that He would gather together in one the children of God who were scattered abroad. (John 11:45-52) It is not difficult to see Caiaphas true nature in his nasty response even to his fellow unbelieving, evil friends ( You know nothing at all... ). Here Caiaphas states that Jesus must die. It is better for one man to die, than for an entire nation to be destroyed. At least that s what Caiaphas meant. What he did not understand, is that he was speaking God s will, that one man would indeed die, but He would die for the entire nation of Israel, as well as for all people. God uses even unbelievers to both state and fulfill His will. 15 And Simon Peter followed Jesus, and so did another disciple. Now that disciple was known to the high priest, and went with Jesus into the courtyard of the high priest. 16 But Peter stood at the door outside. Then the other disciple, who was known to the high priest, went out and spoke to her who kept the door, and brought Peter in. 17 Then the servant girl who kept the door said to Peter, You are not also one of this Man s disciples, are you? He said, I am not. 18 Now the servants and officers who had made a fire of coals stood there, for it was cold, and they warmed themselves. And Peter stood with them and warmed himself....another disciple. Once again, it seems that the writer of this Gospel is determined not to mention his own name. Here he is probably referring to himself as another disciple. RockofAges.org 7 The Book of John, Chapter 18, Part 1: Verses 1-24

Most commentators and readers would assume this person is John, whom we again assume to be the writer of the Gospel that bears this name. However, there is much speculation about the true identity of that writer, especially since he goes to great lengths not to divulge his identity. Why was that? In the book of Revelation, John clearly identifies himself. In the three letters ascribed to John (1, 2, 3 John) however, early church fathers assumed these were written by John, even though they are not identified as such in the text. Is it perhaps possible that the disciple John did not write this Gospel, or even the 3 letters said to be from him? We know he wrote Revelation and identified himself there. But here the writer does not. This leaves the door open to some very interesting speculation. There is, perhaps, another option that seems to make much more sense, at least as far as it concerns this moment. See the lesson notes we have provided on Chapter 11 about this subject. Now that disciple was known to the high priest, and went with Jesus into the courtyard of the high priest. Whoever this disciple was, the writer of this Gospel, he is known to the high priest. Now think about this a minute. This guy obviously has an in. He knows someone high up, as high as you can go in this political hierarchy the high priest. Would it be logical for John, one of the sons of thunder to have this knowledge? John, with his brother James, was a fisherman from Galilee (the far northern part of Israel, nowhere near Jerusalem or the Temple)! How would he have such an in in Jerusalem? We are not saying that it is impossible, just highly unlikely. Whoever this writer is, he is well known in Jerusalem, and in the political circle that was the seat of power at that time, the Temple and all those related to it. He was so well known he was allowed to come inside that night. Peter couldn t get in, and he was also a Galilean fisherman. This writer used his influence to get Peter in, that is, until Peter was recognized as one of Jesus disciples (Peter would be! He was always the vocal, impetuous one that people noticed.) Go back to our notes on chapter 11 for the possible real identity of this Gospel writer, the other disciple who gained entrance to this illegal trial. His life (and wealth and influence) was well known, and he was indeed well known in Jerusalem. It would make much more sense that he was the one who got to go within the inner sanctum that night. And it would also make sense about why he went to such lengths to hide his real identity. Of course, it is all speculation, but then, so also is the assumed identity of this Gospel speculation. Nowhere does the writer reveal it. Although the identity of the writer isn t really important, since all of scripture is God-breathed and authored by the Holy Spirit, it does make the pieces fit a little better in our understanding. It also makes us think a little more, rather than merely taking someone else s word for things. We must investigate for ourselves to know the truth, and not be spoon fed. Then the servant girl who kept the door said to Peter, You are not also one of this Man s disciples, are you? He said, I am not. We don t know how the servant girl recognized Peter. Perhaps she merely heard him speak, and recognized the rougher Galilean dialect and just made an assumption that Peter was one of the Galilean s followers. Or, perhaps she had actually seen Peter with Jesus at some point. They did go with Him everywhere He went, including into the city of Jerusalem on a number of occasions. At any rate, she was right, and Peter was immediately seized with fear that he too might be arrested. This is his first denial. We will cover more of this event in the next lesson for this chapter. RockofAges.org 8 The Book of John, Chapter 18, Part 1: Verses 1-24

At this point Peter decided not to go inside with his fellow disciple who somehow gained entrance. His fear probably kept him outside, but his love for Jesus kept him from running away, like the others apparently did. He stayed out in the courtyard where he could be somewhat safe, but still there to see what was happening. It was cold, and he stood and warmed himself with the servants and officers also remaining in the courtyard. 19 The high priest then asked Jesus about His disciples and His doctrine. 20 Jesus answered him, I spoke openly to the world. I always taught in synagogues and in the temple, where the Jews always meet, and in secret I have said nothing. 21 Why do you ask Me? Ask those who have heard Me what I said to them. Indeed they know what I said. 22 And when He had said these things, one of the officers who stood by struck Jesus with the palm of his hand, saying, Do You answer the high priest like that? 23 Jesus answered him, If I have spoken evil, bear witness of the evil; but if well, why do you strike Me? 24 Then Annas sent Him bound to Caiaphas the high priest. Jesus is now subjected to the evil interrogation, and completely illegal proceedings, of this council of religious Jews headed up by Annas. The writer of this Gospel is giving us some information the others don t Annas seems to be the one behind this diabolical plot to kill the Messiah. Jesus response to their questions is above board and straight to the point. He was open in His teaching, in the local synagogues and even in the Temple. He did not plot anything in secret against them. If they want to know about Him, shouldn t they be asking those who heard Him since He has been teaching for three years? Don t believe the accused, bring in the witnesses. That is part of the Law. But Jesus knew they had already heard the witnesses and the lies they had crafted. He knew that the hearts of these men did not want the truth. In fact, they were looking, as usual, for words from Jesus that would seal His fate. Something He would say that they could hang their conviction on. They needed proof to take to Rome to get permission to kill Him. An overzealous temple officer is apparently offended by what Jesus says in response to the high priest, and reminds Jesus with a slap across His face just who He is addressing. Another irony here. Yeshua is the one and only High Priest of the Temple in heaven. He is our High Priest, still interceding on our behalf. He is the one who atones for the sins of the people by bringing an acceptable sacrifice into the Temple of heaven, into God s presence. He brought Himself. And yet here He is accused of having no respect for this paid lackey of Rome, not a high priest at all, but a greedy, diabolical fake. Yes, that s a little ironic. If I have spoken evil, bear witness of the evil; but if well, why do you strike Me? With this comment Jesus is reminding them that what they are doing, questioning (trying) Him this way at night, is illegal and contrary to the Mosaic Law. So also was their physical abuse illegal. RockofAges.org 9 The Book of John, Chapter 18, Part 1: Verses 1-24

They are not producing witnesses, they have proven nothing, He has done no evil and yet they strike Him. This was completely against the Law...their revered Law. They are the ones breaking the Law. Like our own law, a prisoner is not to be harmed, no punishment given, until he or she has been proven guilty. That s not happening here. These men are merely polishing up their case against Jesus with Rome. They know they can t kill Him, but Rome can, and will. They cannot respond honestly to Jesus question. They know He is right, but they will never admit that. Annas knows he s not going to get anything but truth from this prisoner which he can t counter. So he sends Jesus on to the next prosecutor in line...caiaphas. The other Gospels provide us the details of that interrogation, and of the abuse Jesus suffered at the hands of both Caiaphas and Annas, truly evil men. This book does not give us this information, but from others we learn that Jesus suffered cruel games, deceptions, beatings and endless hours of false witnesses, lies, and the very worst God s own beloved creation has to give the Son of Man, sent to deliver them. In all three of the synoptic Gospels, the disciple writers make mention of one thing Jesus said:...hereafter you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Power, and coming on the clouds of heaven. Jesus is making a prophetic statement here. These people will most definitely see the Son of Man in His glory, but it will most likely not be a pleasant experience for them at this point. Jesus returns to His glory with the Father after His resurrection. And the moment He speaks of here, will be the moment of judgment for these evildoers. The Gospel of Luke tells us that Jesus was asked directly if He was the Son of God. He responded You rightly say that I am. Yes, He is the I AM. And here these words sealed His fate with this group. They had the evidence they needed to send Him to the Roman governor for execution for blasphemy. By uttering this statement, they believed Jesus had spoken the epitome of blasphemy, by openly claiming to be not only the Son of God, but God Himself. The events of this night will continue in the next lesson, as Jesus is brought before Pontius Pilate. RockofAges.org 10 The Book of John, Chapter 18, Part 1: Verses 1-24
