Beshalach When he let go Shemot/Exodus 13:17 17:16 God with Us Objective: The children understand that God wants to protect us. The children understand that God performed miracles to save Israel. The children understand that Yeshua, the Rock, is the only source of Living Water or Mayim Chayim. Welcome/Opening Slide Welcome the children & organize as required Opening Prayer Please Remember These Rules Say: Here are the rules: Please don t talk when others are talking Please raise your hand if you would like to ask a question Please keep your hands, feet and other body parts to yourself You must ask to leave the room Title Slide Note: If possible, hold your Bible open throughout the story. Say: Last week we learned how Pharaoh refused to listen to Moses. Say: Pharaoh remained hardheaded even after experiencing plagues that almost destroyed Egypt. Say: The final plague of the death of the firstborn caused Pharaoh to change his mind and let the Jewish people leave Egypt. Say: The LORD gave us the celebration of Passover to help us remember His deliverance by the blood of the lamb. 1 P a g e
God Leads the People Say: When Israel left Egypt God led the people into the wilderness to the Red Sea. Say: Moses took the bones of Joseph with him to carry them to the Promised Land. Say: The LORD guided Israel with a pillar of cloud by day and a pillar of fire by night. Pharaoh Chases Israel Say: Pharaoh got over his sadness and wanted to bring the Jewish people back to Egypt to be slaves. Say: So Pharaoh and all his army, chased after Israel. Say: He took six hundred select chariots and all the other chariots of Egypt with officers over all of them. Say: As Pharaoh drew near, the sons of Israel saw them coming and became very frightened. Say: The Jewish people complained to Moses about the situation. They said to Moses it would have been better for us to serve the Egyptians than to die in the wilderness. The Sea Divides Say: Moses said to the people, do not fear! Stand by and see the salvation of the Lord which He will accomplish for you today. Say: The LORD told Moses to move toward the Red Sea and stretch out his staff. Say: Next the pillar of cloud moved from before them and stood behind the Jewish people and in front of the Egyptians. Say: Suddenly, the LORD swept the sea back with a strong east wind all night and turned the sea into dry land, so the waters were divided. Say: The sons of Israel went through the midst of the sea on the dry land, and the waters were like a wall to them on their right hand and on their left. Say: The crazy Egyptians followed after the Jewish people unto the dry land of the Red Sea. Say: The Egyptians chariot wheels began to break. 2 P a g e
Say: The Egyptians became very afraid. Moses then stretched out his hand over the sea so that the waters came back over the Egyptians. Say: All the Egyptian army that chased after Israel was drowned. And not even one of them remained. Say: The Lord saved Israel that day from the hand of the Egyptians, and Israel saw the Egyptians dead on the seashore. The LORD Provides Water Say: The area where Israel crossed the Red Sea was a desert and a barren place. Question: What important item is missing and necessary for life? Say: Water! If you are in the desert, you need water very quickly, especially when moving because you can become very thirsty. Say: Israel was 3 days in the wilderness and had found no water. Say: Eventually they traveled to a place called Marah. Say: There was water but they could not drink it because it was bitter. Say: The people began to complain or in Yiddish Kvetched at Moses, saying they needed a drink of water. Say: Moses prayed and the LORD showed him a tree; and he threw it into the waters. Say: A miracle happened because the bitter waters became sweet. The LORD Provides Manna Say: After getting enough water they set out in the desert. Say: They complained again to Moses because they ate all their food and were now hungry. Say: Again the LORD worked a miracle! Say: HE was going to provide a special type of rain. He would rain bread from heaven. Say: The people needed to gather the bread only what they needed for one day. 3 P a g e
Say: On the sixth day for Friday, they gathered twice as much as they gathered every other day. Say: The special bread was like a layer of dew evaporated, and was a fine flake-like thing Say: When the sons of Israel saw it, they said to one another, What is it? For they did not know what it was. Say: The special bread was called Manna. Say: Manna tasted like wafers with honey. The Lord Provides Meat Say: The people were not just happy with Manna because they got tired of eating the same thing. Say: The people complained or Kvetched to Moses because they wanted meat to eat as well. Say: Again the LORD provided a miracle. He gave the Jewish people Manna in the morning and quail in the evening. Question: Does anyone know what quail is? Say: Quail is a small bird that is very tasty to eat. It can fly, but it typically runs on the ground. Say: So the LORD provided Israel with food to eat while they journeyed in the desert. Water in the Rock Say: Again the children of Israel drank all the water they were carrying. Say: Again the people complained about the lack of water. Say: Again Moses prayed for water, but he was also concerned that the people would stone him. Say: The LORD instructed Moses to stand before the rock at a place called Horeb. Say: Next the LORD instructed Moses to strike the rock, and water came out of it. Say: Water flowed out of the rock and so the people could now have a drink. 4 P a g e
Amalek Fought Say: A group of people hated the Jewish people and wanted them killed. Say: They were called the Amalek. Say: Moses told Joshua to build an army and fight against Amalek. Say: Joshua and his army fought against Amalek; and Moses, Aaron, and a person named Hur went up to the top of the hill to watch the battle. Say: God did another miracle but it involved the men on the mountain. Say: When Moses held his hands up, Israel started winning the battle and when he let his hands down, Amalek started to win. Question: Have you ever held up your hands for a long time? Say: Soon your arms start to hurt and feel heavy. Say: This is what happened to Moses hands. Say: So Moses sat on a stone and Aaron and Hur helped to hold Moses hand up. Say: Joshua defeated the Amalek and won the battle. Say: Sadly, the Amalek and the Jewish people would always be enemies. The Amalek hated the Jewish people and tried to kill them many times. Yeshua in the Stories Say: We can see Yeshua in many parts of this story. Say: The pillar of cloud and pillar of fire, the parting of the Red Sea, the water, manna, and quail all teach us that God cares for us. Say: God is with us, watching over us and protecting us. Say: The LORD loves you and wants the very best for you. Say: God is with us all the time. 5 P a g e
Say: One of Yeshua s names is Immanuel. Say: Immanuel means God with us! Say: Yeshua is God in the flesh, watching over us and protecting us. Say: We need to remember that when we are afraid or feel lonely; Yeshua is always with us. Yeshua and the Rock Say: The story of Moses striking the rock to produce water Say: Many times Yeshua is referred to as the Rock of our Salvation. Say: When Moses was told by the LORD to strike the rock, it reminds us that Yeshua was struck while he was hanging on the cross. Say: Yeshua was punished for our sins. Question: What came out of the rock when the rock was struck by Moses? Say: Water! Water came out of the rock and the people could then take a drink of water. Say: So when Yeshua died on the cross he gave us Living Water. Say: The Living Water that Yeshua gives us brings salvation to us and washes away our sins. Say: It is so simple to have Yeshua forgive our sins. Say: All we need to do is to ask Yeshua to forgive our sins and ask him to live in our hearts. Say: If you have any questions and would like to discuss this with us, please let me know. Let's Learn Hebrew! Say: This week s lesson had many examples of water. Say: The Jewish people walked through the dry ground of the Red Sea. Say: They drank water in the desert, the water that was bitter turned sweet. The other time they drank water was when Moses struck the rock and water flowed out. 6 P a g e
Say: Our Hebrew word this week is Mayim Chaim! Say: In English we say Living Water. Note: Practice the phase Mayim Chaim several times. What Did We Learn Today? God wants to protect us and provide what we need. God performed miracles to save Israel and he will provide miracles for you too. Yeshua, the Rock, is the only source of Living Water or Mayim Chayim. 12 Elementary Handout Answer Sheet Shemot/Exodus 14:21-28 Page 1 21 Then Moses stretched out his hand over the sea; and the LORD swept the sea back by a strong east wind all night and turned the sea into dry land, so the waters were divided. 22 The sons of Israel went through the midst of the sea on the dry land, and the waters were like a wall to them on their right hand and on their left. 23 Then the Egyptians took up the pursuit, and all Pharaoh's horses, his chariots and his horsemen went in after them into the midst of the sea. 24 At the morning watch, the LORD looked down on the army of the Egyptians through the pillar of fire and cloud and brought the army of the Egyptians into confusion. 25 He caused their chariot wheels to swerve, and He made them drive with difficulty; so the Egyptians said, Let us flee from Israel, for the LORD is fighting for them against the Egyptians. 26 Then the LORD said to Moses, Stretch out your hand over the sea so that the waters may come back over the Egyptians, over their chariots and their horsemen. 27 So Moses stretched out his hand over the sea, and the sea returned to its normal state at daybreak, while the Egyptians were fleeing right into it; then the LORD overthrew the Egyptians in the midst of the sea. 28 The waters returned and covered the chariots and the horsemen, even Pharaoh's entire army that had gone into the sea after them; not even one of them remained. 29 But the sons of Israel walked on dry land through the midst of the sea, and the waters were like a wall to them on their right hand and on their left. 30 Thus the LORD saved Israel that day from the hand of the Egyptians, and Israel saw the Egyptians dead on the seashore.
