3 In our hope for a better world it s time to bring our resources together and, with empathy and goodwill, do something to achieve that end. One of the blessings of my life has been the ability to bring together disparate people to create common understanding in situations of dispute and confrontation. I want to continue to play a part in finding solutions to one of the world s most difficult and dangerous problems: the basic lack of understanding and increasingly hostile tensions between Muslim and non-muslim worlds. The University of South Australia accepted my challenge and established an International Centre for Muslim and non-muslim Understanding. The Centre focuses on the triggers for prejudice that present barriers to dialogue. Respected friends on the world stage have commended this initiative and I urge you all to actively support the work of the Centre and provide the impetus for it to vigorously pursue its objectives. 5 About the Centre The International Centre for Muslim and non-muslim Understanding (MnM) seeks to understand the root causes of the differences between the Muslim and non-muslim communities and to pioneer ways of bridging the divide that these differences seem to produce. The Centre promotes critical scholarship and research that helps to improve understanding and relations between Muslims and non- Muslims. It is socially engaged and contributes to both academic and public debates. It presents new ways of thinking about contemporary communities and cultures, offering us the chance to re-imagine our world. Understanding is not simply a matter of developing empathy or gaining greater knowledge. Understanding also requires changing the style of thinking that initiates misunderstandings. For this reason the International Centre for Muslim and non- Muslim Understanding is committed to developing a distinct approach to countering the thinking and habits that lead to misunderstandings between those who are Muslims and those who are not. This means that our analytical focus is directed not towards a clash of religions or cultures but rather towards the way in which different communities encounter each other. These encounters take place within the context of a modern, globalised world characterised by the passing of the Age of Europe and uncertainty about the future. This passing has not only economic, geopolitical and cultural consequences but also philosophical implications. This arises from the fact that so many of our tools for understanding the world have been forged against the backdrop of Europe s global hegemony. The contrast between what was considered European, and what was not, was fundamental to the way in which the world was perceived and understood. To create better understanding we must address how Muslims fit into contemporary communities and cultures. This requires a different perspective that re-orients the way in which we understand the world and our place in it. By concentrating on relations between Muslims and non-muslims, MnM not only announces the subject of its concerns, or the means by which the concerns of its subjects may be addressed, but also offers us the chance to re-imagine our world. 5

6 Our vision The International Centre for Muslim and non- Muslim understanding is an internationally significant research centre devoted to understanding and transcending the divide between Muslim and non-muslim worlds. Its strong socio-cultural focus will foster harmonious relationships between what increasingly seem to be disparate worlds. The Centre provides a unique forum in which scholars develop and share ideas within a framework of a broader social justice agenda. Our focus Global societies are naturally diverse but diversity itself is not the cause of conflict. It is rather prejudices about the other that lead to misapprehensions, fear and insecurity, and which become deeply embedded in both the individual and the communal mind. Often these prejudices and phobias are the product of ignorance, media misrepresentations and extremist propaganda. The Centre encourages scholarship aimed at examining and understanding the root causes of the rift between Muslim and non-muslim cultures and developing models to bridge this divide. 6 Our objectives To probe the basis of tensions between Muslim and non-muslim worlds including the role of the media, with a social-cultural rather than exclusively religious focus. To examine and propose ways of diffusing tensions and ameliorating relationships at the political, civil and social level both in Australia and internationally. To identify and analyse effective rapprochement and intellectual bridgebuilding within a global context informed by sound principles of social justice. To contribute to an understanding of Muslim and non-muslim relations in Australia s domestic multicultural context. To build on the University of South Australia s commitment to reconciliation. Our team The International Centre for Muslim and non- Muslim Understanding is led by the Director, Professor Salman Sayyid, an outstanding academic whose work has focussed on relations between Muslims and non-muslims in a global context. His research interests are threefold. Broadly, he has examined ethnicity and racism, the relationship between culture and politics, and postcolonial politics. He has published extensively on contemporary Muslim politics, Islamophobia and South Asian diasporas in Britain. Professor Sayyid also teaches in the fields of racism, postcolonialism, critical theory and political Islam. The Centre team also includes a burgeoning team of academics, as well as project and support staff. There is also provision for annual visiting research fellows.

7 Our research The MnM Centre was established to improve relations between Muslims and non-muslims by improving understanding. Understanding is not simply a matter of gaining better knowledge or developing empathy but also changing the original terms of reference by which misunderstandings are generated. For this reason the Centre is committed to the development of a distinct analytical approach that focuses on understanding Muslims outside the prism of religious studies (such as Islamic studies or Quranic studies) and area studies (such as Middle-Eastern studies, Asian studies or African studies). Critical Muslim studies draws on and extends the insights of post-orientalism, postcolonialism and post-structuralism in examining the assumptions of western hegemony, the political formations of Muslim and non-muslim subjectivities and the unresolved imbrications of multiculturalism and racism. What motivates this approach is the idea that understanding Muslim and non-muslim interactions necessitates a critical analysis of the way in which the Muslim question is constructed by the histories, geographies and cultures of colonialism and racism. One of the ways of conceiving coloniality is to see it as a framework in which the distinction between the West and non-west becomes the overriding dyad that structures the world. The reduction of the non-west to a residual category announced the subaltern position of the rest of the world in relation to the West. However, the relationship between Muslim and non-muslim politics, geographies and histories becomes crucial not only because it seems to mark out a volatile and violent border but more importantly because it opens up the horizon of an ambiguous postcolonality. Giving the non-west a name opens a decolonising horizon which is a way of reorienting the world. This re-orientation points to the possibility of imagining a different configuration of the planet, which underscores the contingency inherent in the initial colonial ordering. Some substantive research topics have included: Critical analyses of the politics of post-9/11 security contexts and its effects on Muslim populations Everyday security in postcolonial cities Hindu and Islamicate thought in the formation of regional identity in India Analysing violent extremism Islamicate diasporas Muslim youth Citizenship and national belonging Contemporary culture and politics Islamophobia. 7

Australians are encouraged, through schools, universities and other institutions to value, respect and celebrate cultural difference. In the Australian academic environment there is a considerable body of knowledge and expertise in the values and practices associated with cross-cultural issues, including the development of intercultural respect and dialogue. The Centre is located at the University of South Australia in Adelaide, the capital city of South Australia, at its modern and wellappointed City West campus. Adelaide is a university city, attracting many international students. The University of South Australia is the largest university in South Australia. With over 100,000 graduates in the last 20 years, and as the leading provider of international education in the State, it is a significant contributor to South Australia s prosperity. Our distinctive research profile is based on bringing together multidisciplinary research teams to work with industry, business and the professions on projects that are significant to Australia, the region and the world. The University contains within its Division of Education, Arts and Social Sciences, the Bob Hawke Prime Ministerial Centre. Its research arm, the Hawke Research Institute conducts world-class, cross-disciplinary research in the humanities and social sciences to support an ecologically diverse and sustainable world of tolerant and inclusive democratic societies. The Institute, with its emphasis on international relations and social justice, provides crucial assistance to the Centre through international linkages and opportunities for interdisciplinary research projects, symposia and workshops involving scholars with expertise in areas such as community conflict resolution, international studies and reconciliation. 9

11 State Government support The South Australian Government has made a substantial contribution towards the funding of this Centre and was represented at the official launch in 2008 at the University of South Australia. The Premier of South Australia, The Hon Jay Weatherill made the following statement about the Centre. Since the earliest settlement, South Australia has been recognised as a place of understanding, tolerance and religious freedom, welcoming those from around the world to our shores. We have grown into a dynamic State, where we are now renowned for our arts and culture and our wonderful lifestyle. Over our 175 year history, our capital city Adelaide, has also gained a reputation as an education city. Our five universities attract many students from across the globe, who build strong relationships between South Australia and the world. The South Australian Government is strongly committed to multiculturalism and is proud to support the work of the International Centre for Muslim and non-muslim Understanding in its efforts to promote trust, tolerance and understanding in this region and throughout the world. The University of South Australia and the Bob Hawke Prime Ministerial Centre, with their dedication to sharing knowledge and understanding amongst our wider community, make an enormous contribution to the life of our State and are to be congratulated for this most important work. Prime Minister of Australia, The Hon Julia Gillard* was closely involved in the official University ceremony in India to announce the Centre, held in New Delhi in September She was joined on the occasion by Iman Umer Ahmed Ilyasi, Secretary General of the All India Organizations of Imams of Mosques, by Mr Ishrat Aziz, former Ambassador of India to the UAE and Saudi Arabia, Mr Peter Varghese, the Australian High Commissioner for India and other distinguished guests. During the ceremony, The Hon Julia Gillard said the launch of the Centre in India would help to broaden the scope of the new research centre and to attract research engagement from India and the Asian region. *The Hon Julia Gillard was the then Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Education. 11

The University of South Australia donor policy requires transparency and integrity, avoiding any perception of undue influence on the agenda and academic independence of the Centre. As part of MnM s commitment to public engagement, the Centre launched its inaugural Award for Muslim and non-muslim Understanding in This award is a national program of the Australia Day Council of SA, in partnership with the University of South Australia.
