SURA 1. Al-Fatiha, the Opening Chapter 1. In the name of Allah, Most Gracious and Most Merciful. 2. Praise be to Allah, the Cherisher and Sustainer of the worlds. 3. Most Gracious and Most Merciful. 4. Master of the Day of Judgment. 5. You we worship and from you we seek help. 6. Show us the straight path. 7. The way of those on whom You bestowed Grace, not those who have been condemned by You nor of those who go astray. SURA 2. Al-Baqara, the Heifer 1. Alif, Lam, Meem (Only Allah knows their meaning). 2. This is a Book about which there is no doubt, guidance for those who are conscious of Allah, 3. Who believe in the unseen and are steadfast in prayer and spend from what He has provided, 4. And believes in the Revelations sent previously by Us, and in their hearts have the assurance of the hereafter. 5. They are on true guidance from their Lord, these are the ones who will prosper. 6. As for those who reject faith, it is the same whether they are warned or not, they will not believe. 7. Allah has sealed their hearts and hearing. He has also put a veil on their eyes, they will incur a great punishment. 8. There are some people who say: We believe in Allah and the last day. They don t really believe. 9. They think that they are deceiving Allah and those who believe, the fact is, they are only deceiving themselves, and they just don t realize it. 10. There is a disease of deception in their heart and Allah allows it to increase. They shall have a painful punishment for the lies they have told. 11. When it is said to them: Do not create mischief on earth. They say: We make peace. 12. They are trouble makers but don t realise it. 13. When it is said to them: Believe as the others believe, they say: Should we believe as the fools believe. Surely, they are the fools, they just 6

don t know it. 14. When they meet those who believe, they say: We believe, but when they are alone with their evil companions, they say: We are really with you, we were only joking. 15. Allah will throw their jokes back on them and leave them for a while in their arrogance, so they wander to and fro like the blind. 16. These are a people who barter guidance for error, but their bargains are profitless and they are not going to be guided. 17. Their example is that of a man who kindled a fire, when it lit up, Allah took the light away and left him in utter darkness. He could not see. 18. Deaf, dumb and blind, they will never return to the path. 19. Or another example is that of a dark storm-cloud in the sky charged with thunder and lightning. They press their fingers into their ears at the sound of each stunning thunderclap for fear of death. Allah is encircling the unbelievers from all sides. 20. The lightning terrifies them, as if it was going to snatch away their eyesight and whenever it flashes, they walk on, and when it becomes dark, they stand still. And if it had been Allah s wish, He could have taken away their hearing and sight for He has power over everything. 21. O people! Adore your Guardian-Lord, who created you and those who came before you so you may have a chance to learn righteousness. 22. It is He who has made the earth a floor for you and the sky a canopy, and it is He who sends down rain from the sky for the growth of fruits for your sustenance. Therefore, do not knowingly set up rivals to Allah. 23. If you doubt what We reveal from time to time to Our servant, then, produce a Surah like Ours and call on your witnesses or helpers if there are any besides Allah and if your doubts are true. 24. But if you cannot, then fear the fire whose fuel is men and stones, which We have prepared for those who reject faith. 25. Give good news to those who believe and are righteous, their reward is gardens, beneath which rivers flow and every time they eat its fruit, they will say: This is what we ate before. They shall have similar things and in there they shall have companions pure and holy, they will live there forever. 26. Indeed, Allah is not afraid to present examples like that of a mosquito or something smaller. Believers know it is the truth from their Lord. The unbelievers say: What did Allah mean by this example. He misleads many and guides many. He misleads only the defiantly disobedient people. 27. Those who break Allah s agreement after accepting it, and who split what Allah has ordered to be united and cause trouble on earth. It is they who are the losers. 28. How can you deny Allah? Did He not give you life when you were lifeless, and will He not cause you to die and again bring you back to life, and will you not ultimately return to Him? 29. It is He who created for you all that which is in the earth. He directed Himself towards the sky and designed it into seven heavens. 7

He has perfect knowledge of everything. 30. Note that occasion, when your Lord said to the angels: I am going to place a ruler on earth. The angels replied: Will You place therein one who will create mischief and cause bloodshed while we sing Your praises and glorify Your name? Allah said: I know what you do not. 31. He taught Adam the names of all things, then He presented them to the Angels and said: Tell Me the names of these things if what you say is true? 32. They said: You are exalted, we only know what You have taught us. Indeed, it is Allah who is Wise and all Knowing. 33. He said: O Adam! Tell them their names. When he told them, Allah said: Did I not tell you that I know the secrets of the heavens and earth and I know what you reveal and what you conceal. 34. Behold, We said to the angels: Bow down to Adam. They all bowed, except Satan (Iblis). He refused, he was arrogant. He was of those who rejected faith. 35. We said: O Adam! Live with your wife in the garden and eat the bountiful things where and when you want but do not approach this tree, lest you will run into harm and transgression. 36. But Satan tempted them with the tree and caused them to be expelled from Paradise. We said: Get out from here, some of you being enemies to others. You shall have on earth a habitation and provisions for a specified period. 37. Then, Adam received appropriate words from his Lord and repented, Allah accepted his repentance. Surely, Allah is the Most Forgiving and the Most Merciful. 38. At the time of Adam s departure, We said: Get out from here, all of you. We further said: There will come to you guidance from Me, those who accept and follow it, shall have nothing to fear or regret, 39. But those who reject faith and do not believe in Our signs, they shall be companions of the fire, where they shall live. 40. O Children of Israel, remember the special favour which I bestowed upon you, so fulfil your agreement with Me, just as I fulfilled my agreement with you and fear none but Me. 41. Believe in My revelations which are confirming your scriptures, do not be the first one to deny My revelations, and do not sell them for a petty price. Fear Me and Me alone. 42. Do not cover the truth with falsehood nor conceal the truth when you know what it is. 43. Be steadfast in prayer and practise regular charity and bow your heads with those who bow down in worship. 44. Would you ask others to be righteous and forget to practice it yourselves? Even though you read your Holy Book? Have you no sense? 45. Seek help through patience and prayer, indeed, it is difficult, except for those who are humbly submissive to Allah 46. Who are certain in their mind that they are going to meet their Lord and that they are going to return to Him for final judgement. 47. O children of Israel! Remember the special favour which I bestowed upon you, I preferred you over all others for My 8

message. 48. Guard yourselves against a day when no soul shall avail another nor shall intercession be accepted nor shall compensation be taken nor shall anyone be helped from outside. 49. And remember when We recued your forefathers from the people of Pharaoh, who afflicted you with the worst torments, slaughtering your newborn sons and keeping your females alive, you were facing a tremendous test from your Lord. 50. Remember We parted the sea and saved you and then, We drowned Pharaoh's people within your very sight. 51. Remember when We appointed forty nights for Moses. In his absence you took the calf for worship, you did wrong. 52. Even then We forgave you. You had a chance to be grateful. 53. Remember the time when We gave Moses the Torah and the criterion of right and wrong so that you might be rightly guided. 54. Remember when Moses returned with the Divine Book he said: O my people! You have grievously wronged yourselves by taking the calf for worship, turn in repentance to your Creator and kill the culprits among you, for that will be best for you in His Sight. Allah accepted your repentance, surely, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful. 55. Remember when you said: O Moses! We shall never believe you until we see Allah with our own eyes. Then a thunderbolt overtook you before your very eyes (The punishment for insisting on seeing God was death, but those who rejected faith were forgiven and yet, ungrateful). 56. Then We raised you up after your death so that you might be grateful. 57. We even provided you with the shade of a cloud (while the children of Israel wandered in the desert as punishment), We also sent down manna (sweet) and salva (quails) to you saying: Eat the pure and good things which We have provided you. In spite of these favours your forefathers violated Our commandments, but they did not harm Us, they harmed their own souls (One of the miracles of Moses was a mountain dislodged from the ground and hovered over the children of Israel like a cloud). 58. Remember when We said: Enter this town and eat whatever you wish and make your way through the gates with humility saying: We repent. We shall forgive your sins and We shall increase the provisions for the righteous among you. 59. But the wrongdoers changed Our words from that which they were asked to say. So We sent a plague from heaven as punishment for they repeatedly undermined Our command. 60. Remember the time when Moses prayed for water for his people. We said: Strike the rock with your staff. Behold, We caused twelve springs to come out. Each tribe was assigned its own drinking-place. Then they were commanded: Eat and drink from what Allah has provided and do not create mischief on the land. 61. Remember when you said: O Moses! We cannot endure one kind of food, call on your Lord to give us a variety of 9

food which the earth produces, such as green-herbs, cucumbers, garlic, lentils and onions. 'What?' Moses asked. 'Would you exchange better for worse? If that's what you want, go back to the city. There you will find what you have asked for. Gradually they became so degraded that shame and misery came upon them and they drew upon themselves the wrath of Allah because they persisted in denying the truth of God's messages and in slaying the Prophets against all right. All this, because they rebelled against God and persisted in transgressing the bounds of what is right. 62. Verily, all believers whether Muslims, Jews, Christians, Sabians and whoever believes in Allah and the last day and perform good deeds, they will be rewarded, by their Lord. They will have nothing to fear nor regret. 63. Remember O children of Israel when We took an agreement from you and when We lifted Mount Tur over your heads saying: Hold firmly to the Torah and follow its commandments so you may guard yourself against evil. 64. But you turned your backs and had it not been for the grace and mercy of Allah, you would have been among the losers. 65. You know very well the story of those who transgressed in the matter of the Sabbath. We ordered them: Be despised and rejected apes. 66. We made them an example to their own people and to their succeeding generations and a lesson for those who fear Allah. 67. Remember the incident when Moses said to his people: Allah commands you to sacrifice a cow. (During their plight in the desert, they came across a body, no one knew who killed him, if became known that the man was a wealthy individual called Ayeem. Moses told the children of Israel to bring the cow for sacrifice and the dead body to him, when this was done, the cow was sacrificed and them Moses told them to cut a piece of the cow and place its meat on the dead body, behold! The dead man came back to life and stated that his nephew killed him.) They replied: Are you joking with us. Moses said: Allah save me from being an arrogant fool. 68. They said: Appeal on our behalf to your Lord to make plain to us which cow. He said: Allah says: The cow should neither be too old nor too young but of middle age, now do what you are commanded. 69. They said: Appeal on our behalf to your Lord to clarify her colour. He said: Allah says: A fawn-coloured cow, pure and rich in tone, pleasing to the eyes. 70. They said: Appeal on our behalf to your Lord to make clear the exact type of cow as all cows look the same to us, if Allah wills, we shall be rightly guided. 71. He said: Allah says: The cow should neither have been used to till the soil or water the fields, a healthy one free from any blemish. They said: Now you have brought an accurate description. They offered her in sacrifice but not with goodwill. 72. And remember another incident when you killed a man and started disputing 10

as to who killed the man, Allah made it known what you concealed. 73. So We said: Strike the body with a piece of the slaughtered cow. That s how Allah brought the dead back to life and to show you His signs so that you may understand His power to restore life. 74. But even after seeing that your hearts hardened, even harder than a rock, but there are some rocks from which rivers gush out, and there are some which break apart and water comes out of them, and there are some which fall down with the fear of Allah, and Allah is not unaware of what you do. 75. Do you believers still hope that they will believe in what you say, when a group of them heard the word of Allah and changed it knowingly even after they understood it. 76. When they meet believers they say: We too are believers. But when they (People of the Book) meet each other in private they say: Would you disclose to the believers what Allah has revealed to you? So they may use it as an argument against you in the court of your Lord? Have you no sense? 77. Don t they know that Allah knows what they conceal and what they reveal? 78. Among them, there are some illiterates who do not know their Holy Book, they only speculate and follow their own desires. 79. Woe to those who write the Book with their own hands and then say: This is from Allah, so that they may sell it for a miserable price. Woe to them for what their hands write and for the gain they make. 80. The Jews say: The fire shall only touch us for a few days. Say: Have you obtained such a promise from Allah which He would not break? Or do you attribute to God something which you do not know? 81. No! Those who commit evil and become encircled in sin are the inmates of hellfire, they shall live there forever. 82. But those who have faith and are righteous in conduct, they are companions of the garden. They shall live there forever. 83. Remember We took an agreement from the children of Israel to this effect: Worship none but Allah, treat your parents, families, orphans and those in need with kindness, speak fairly to people, be steadfast in prayer and practise regular charity. But then you turned away, except for a few. 84. Remember We took your agreement to this effect: Shed no blood nor turn out your own people from their homes. You confirmed it and you are witnesses to it. 85. Yet there you are, killing your own people, expelling a group from their homes, backing each other with sin and aggression, and if they come to you as captives, you trade them for ransoms, whereas their expulsion was unlawful for you to begin with. Do you believe part of your Holy Book and reject the rest? So what other punishment do such people among you, who behave like this, deserve, disgrace in this world and be driven to grievous punishment on the Day of Judgment? Allah is not unaware of what you do. 86. These people buy the life of this world at the price of the hereafter. 11

Their punishment shall not be lightened nor shall they be helped. 87. We gave Moses the Torah and sent after him other Prophets in succession, then We gave Jesus, the son of Mary, clear signs and strengthened him with the Holy Spirit (Gabriel). Why is it that whenever there came to you a Prophet with a message which did not suit your desires, you became so arrogant that some you called impostors and others you killed. 88. They said: We preserved Allah s word in our hearts and do not need any more. No, Allah's curse is on them for their blasphemy, they believe little. 89. Now a Book from Allah has come to them, confirming their Holy Books (Torah and Gospel) which they already had and before this they used to pray for victory against the unbelievers, and whenever something came to them which they recognised, they knowingly rejected it, Allah's curse is on such unbelievers. 90. Ridiculous is the price for which they sold their souls, they deny Allah's revelation merely because of a grudge that Allah should send His grace on an Israelite rather than on whom He pleases of His servants. They have drawn wrath upon wrath on themselves, for such unbelievers there is a disgraceful punishment. 91. When they are asked to believe in what Allah has revealed, they reply: we only believe in what Allah has sent to us (Torah) and we reject what is beside that. Even though it is the truth confirming their own scriptures. Ask them: if you sincerely believe in what was sent to you then why did you kill the Prophets of Allah who were sent to you from amongst yourselves before? 92. Moses came to you with clear signs but you worshipped the calf and acted wickedly. 93. We accepted your solemn pledge and raised Mount Tur high above you saying: Take what We have given you with determination and listen. Instead they said: We hear but we disobey. Their hearts absorbed the worship of the calf because of their disbelief. Ask them: If you are real believers then why does your faith prompt you to do such evil things? 94. Say: If the last home with Allah is especially for you and not for anyone else, then seek death, if you are sincere. 95. They will never seek death on account of the sins which their hands have sent forth. Allah is well-acquainted with the wrongdoers. 96. He finds them all greedy for life, even more than the idolaters. Each one of them wishes for a life span of a thousand years but the grant of such life will not save them from the due punishment for Allah sees all that they do. 97. Say O Muhammad: Whoever is the enemy of Gabriel should know that he revealed this Qur'an to your heart by Allah's command, which confirms previous scriptures, and is a guidance and good news for the believers. 98. And whoever is an enemy to Allah, His angels, His Prophets, Gabriel and Michael, Allah is an enemy to such unbelievers. 99. We sent down clear signs and none reject 12

them except those who are unreasonable Has it not been the case that every time they made an agreement a group of them threw it aside? The fact is that most of them are faithless And when a messenger came to them from Allah confirming what was with them a group of them threw the Book of Allah behind their backs as if it had been something they did not know They followed what the devils falsely attributed to the kingdom of Solomon, not that Solomon was an unbeliever, it was the devils who were unbelievers, they taught witchcraft to the people, and that which was revealed to the two angels, Harut and Marut, in the city of Babylon. Yet these two angels never taught magic to anyone without saying: We have been sent to tempt you so do not renounce your faith. In spite of this warning the people kept on learning from the angels the magic which could cause discord between husband and wife, although they could not harm anyone with it except with Allah's permission. They did learn what harmed them, it did not profit them, even though they knew very well that the buyers of magic would have no share in the happiness of the hereafter. Surely, they sold their souls for a bad price, had they but know If they had kept their faith and guarded themselves from evil, the reward would have been far better from their Lord, only if they knew O you of faith! Do not say to the messenger: Listen to us. But rather say: have patience with us. Respect and listen to him carefully and remember there is a painful punishment for the unbelievers The unbelievers among the People of the Book, and the Pagan would never wish that any good be sent down to you O Muhammad, from your Lord, but Allah chooses for His special mercy whom He pleases. Allah is limitless in His great bounty We do not abrogate any of Our verses of the Qur'an or cause it to be forgotten, We substitute it with something better or similar. Don't you know that Allah has full power over everything? 107. Know that to Allah belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth, and beside Him you have neither a patron nor a helper Would you question your messenger as Moses was questioned? Whoever changes faith to unbelief, has strayed without a doubt from the straight path Many among the people of the Book (Jews and Christians) wish they could somehow turn you back to unbelief, due to their selfish envy, after truth has become very clear to them. Forgive them and bear with them until Allah brings about His decision, and rest assured Allah has power over everything Be steadfast in prayer and regular in charity and whatever good you send forth for your souls, you shall find it with Allah for Allah sees all that you do They say: None shall enter Paradise unless he be a Jew or a Christian. Those are their vain desires. Say: show us proof of your claim No! 13

Whoever submits himself entirely to Allah and is good to others will be rewarded by his Lord, he will have nothing to fear nor regret The Jews say: The Christians are not on the right track, and the Christians say: The Jews are not on the right track, yet both read their Holy Books (Torah or Gospel). And those who have no knowledge of their Holy Books say like what both of them say. Allah will judge their dispute between them on the Day of Judgment Who is more unjust than the one who prevents people from going to the Mosque of Allah and forbids the mention of His name therein and strives to destroy them? It is not proper for such people to enter them except with His fear. For them there is disgrace in this world and a grievous punishment in the hereafter To Allah belongs the East and the West, whichever direction you turn your face there is the presence of Allah. Allah is all- Embracing all-knowing They say: Allah has begotten a son. Glory be to Him. To Him belongs all that which is in the heavens and on earth, all are obedient to Him He is the creator of the heavens and the earth, and when He decrees a thing, He only needs to say: Be, and it is Those who have no knowledge ask: Why does Allah not speak to us face to face or send us a sign? The same demand was made by those before them. They all have the same mentality. We have already shown clear signs to those whose faith is firm What is clearer than this Book? We have sent you with the knowledge of truth and made you the bearer of good news and warning, now, you will not be called upon to answer about the actions of the companions of the blazing fire Never will the Jews or Christians be satisfied with you unless you follow their form of religion. Say: Allah s guidance is the only guidance. If you were to follow their desires after knowledge reached you, you would not find a protector nor helper against Allah Those to whom We have given the book, they study it as it ought to be studied, they are the ones who believe in it, as for those who reject it, they are for sure the losers O Children of Israel! Remember the special favour which I bestowed upon you, I preferred you over all others for My message So guard yourselves against a day, when no soul shall avail another nor shall compensation be accepted nor shall intercession profit nor shall anyone be helped from outside And mention O Muhammad, when Abraham was tested by his Lord with commands. He fulfilled them. Allah said: I will make you a leader of mankind. Abraham said: what about my descendants. Allah said: My agreement does not include wrongdoers Remember when We made the House (Ka ba) a centre and sanctuary for mankind saying: Take the station of Abraham as a place of prayer. We entrusted Abraham and Ishmael to purify Our House for those who walk 14

around it, who meditate in it and who kneel and prostrate in prayers Abraham said: My Lord make Mecca a secure city and provide plenty food for those who believe in Allah and the last day. Allah replied: I shall provide for those who reject faith in this life, even though in the hereafter I shall drag them to the torture of the fire, an evil destination indeed Abraham and Ishmael raised the foundations of the House and dedicated it by saying: Accept this from us O Lord. You are the one who hears all and knows all Our Lord! Make us and our offspring Muslim people, bowing to Your will and show us our place for the celebration of due rites, and turn to us in mercy, for You are the most Merciful and oft-returning Our Lord! Appoint a Prophet from among them who shall recite your revelations and teach them the Book as well as wisdom. Sanctify them, for You are exalted in Might and Wise Who but a fool would renounce the faith of Abraham? We chose him in this world and in the hereafter he will be among the righteous Behold! His Lord said to him: Bow your will to Me. He said: I bow my will to the Lord and Cherisher of the Universe This was the legacy that Abraham left to his sons and so did Jacob. Jacob said: Oh sons! Allah has chosen your faith for you, die only as a Muslim Were you present when death approached Jacob? Behold, he said to his sons: What will you worship after me? They said: We shall worship your god, and the god of our fathers: Abraham, Ishmael and Isaac, the One true Allah and to Him we bow in Islam They were a people that have passed away. They shall reap the fruit of what they did and you of what you do. You shall not be questioned about what they did They say: Be Jews or Christians, you shall then be rightly guided. Say: by no means, we follow the faith of Abraham which is true nor did he join partners with Allah Say: We believe in Allah, Allah s revelations, Abraham, Ishmael, Isaac, Jacob and the tribes, and that which was given to Moses and Jesus, and that which was given to all the Prophets from their Lord. We make no difference between them and we bow to Allah in Islam So if they believe as you believe, they are indeed on the right path but if they reject it, they shall fall into different factions. Surely Allah will be your sufficient defender against them. He is the all-hearing and the all- Knowing Say: Baptism is from Allah and who is better than Allah in baptizing? Him we worship Say: Why do you argue with us regarding God, He is our Lord and your Lord, we are responsible for our deeds and you are for yours and we are devoted to Him, alone Do you claim that Abraham, Ishmael, Isaac, Jacob and their descendants were all Jews or Christians? Are you more knowledgeable than Allah? Who can be more wicked than the one who hides the testimony he received 15

from Allah? Allah is not unaware of what you do That was a nation who has already passed away. They are responsible for what they did and you are for what you do, you shall not be questioned about their deeds The foolish ones will ask: Why did they turn away from the Qibla (direction of prayer) towards which they used to face. Say: East and the west belong to Allah. He guides whomever He wishes to the right path We have made you a moderate Ummah (nation) so you may testify against mankind and your own Prophet shall be a witness over you. We decreed your former Qibla only to distinguish those who are real followers of the Prophet from those who turn away from faith. It was a hard test, except for those whom Allah has guided. Allah does not want to make your faith fruitless. Allah is Compassionate and Merciful to mankind We see faces turning for guidance to the heavens and now, We shall turn you to a Qibla (direction of prayer) that will please Allah. Turn your face in the direction of the Sacred Mosque (Ka ba). Wherever you may be turn your face in that direction. The People of the Book know well that it is the truth from their Lord. Allah is not unmindful of what they do Even if you give every proof to the people of the Book, they will not accept your Qibla nor will you accept theirs. Neither of them (Jews and Christians) are followers of each other's Qibla. If, after all the knowledge you have been given, you yield to their desires then surely you will be among the wrongdoers The People of the Book know this, just as they know their own sons but some of them conceal the truth which they themselves know Truth is from Allah so don t doubt it Everyone has a direction towards which he turns, therefore, emulate one another in good deeds. Wherever you are, Allah will bring you all together, He has power over all things Wherever you come from turn your face during prayer towards the Sacred Mosque in Mecca, this is a commandment from your Lord. Allah is not unaware of what you do Wherever you are turn your face in the direction of the Sacred Mosque and let there be no ground of dispute among you. Except by those who are bent on wickedness. Do not fear them, fear Me, so I may complete My favours on you and consent to be guided Just as We bestowed Our favour upon you when We sent from among you a Prophet of your own who recites to you Our revelations, he sanctifies you, he teaches you the Book and wisdom, and he teaches that which you did not know So remember Me, I will remember you, be grateful to Me and never deny Me O you who believe! Seek My help with patience and prayer. Surely Allah is with those who are patient Do not say of those who are killed in the way of Allah: They are dead. No, they are living even though you do not see 16

them We shall surely test you with fear and hunger, and loss of goods or lives or with the fruits of your toil, so give good news to those who endure with patience Who, when afflicted with a calamity, say: we belong to Allah and to Him we shall return On whom blessings and mercy descends from Allah, they are the ones who are rightly guided Al-Safa and Al-Marwah (The space between the two low outcrops of rock called Safa and Marwah, situated in Mecca in the immediate vicinity of the Ka ba, is said to have been the scene of Hagar's suffering when Abraham following God's command, abandoned her and their infant son Ishmael in the desert. Distraught with thirst and fearing for the life of her child, Hagar ran to and fro between the two rocks and continuously prayed to God for help, finally her reliance on God and her patience were rewarded by the discovery of a spring, existing to this day and known as the well of Zamzam. It was in remembrance of Hagar's extreme trial and of her trust in God that Safa and Marwah had come to be regarded, even in pre-islamic times as symbols of faith and patience in adversity) are among the symbols of Allah, so whoever goes for Hajj to the House or to perform Umrah, there is no blame upon him for walking between them, and anyone who does good voluntarily should know that Allah knows the grateful Those who conceal proof and guidance after We made it clear in the Book for mankind, they will have Allah's curse and the curse of those entitled to curse, 160. Except those who repent, reform and let the truth be known, I will accept their repentance, for I am the receiver of repentance, the Merciful Surely those who are unbelievers and die as unbelievers they are the ones on whom is the curse of Allah, the angels and all mankind They shall live in this state forever and their punishment will not be lightened or cancelled Your God is One God, there is no god but Him. He is the most Gracious and most Merciful Surely! in the creation of the heavens and the earth, in the alternation of the night and the day, in the sailing of the Ships through the ocean for the profit of mankind, in the rain which Allah sends down from the sky, with which He revives the earth after its death and spreads in it all kinds of animals, in the change of the winds, and the clouds that run their appointed courses between the sky and the earth. In all this there are messages indeed for people who have sense Yet there are men who worship other deities besides Allah, they love them as they should love Allah, whereas the believers have strong love for Allah. If only the wrongdoers could visualize the punishment and when they see it, they would come to know for sure that all powers belong to Allah and that Allah is severe with His punishment On that day the leaders who were followed, and when faced 17

with their punishment, they will renounce those who followed them and the bonds which united them will fall apart Their followers will say: If it could be possible for us to live again, we would renounce them as they have renounced us today. Thus Allah will show them the fruits of their deeds. They will sigh with regret, nor shall they be able to come out of the fire O Mankind, eat what is lawful and clean on earth and do not follow the footsteps of Satan, surely he is your open enemy He commands evil and shameful deeds and for you to say certain things against Allah about which you have no knowledge When it is said to them: Follow what Allah has revealed. They say: No! We shall follow the ways of our forefathers. What even though their forefathers had no sense at all and lacked guidance? 171. And so, the example of those who are bent on denying the truth is that of a beast which hears the shepherd's cry, but it sounds like nothing, just a voice and call. They are deaf, dumb and blind and understanding nothing O believers, consume the good things which We have provided for you and be grateful to Allah, if it is Him you worship He has only forbidden you dead meat, blood, the flesh of swine and that on which any other name has been invoked besides Allah. But if one is forced to eat by necessity, and without wilful disobedience, nor transgressing due limits, then, he is guiltless, for Allah is Oft-Forgiving and Most Merciful Those who conceal Allah's revelations and purchase them for a miserable profit, swallow fire into themselves. Allah will not address them on the Day of Resurrection nor purify them, their punishment will be grievous They are the ones who buy error in the place of guidance, and torment in the place of forgiveness. Ah! What boldness they show for the fire Their doom is because Allah sent down the Book in truth and those who set their own views against the Book are deeply in the wrong (suppressing or rejecting parts of it or denying its divine origin altogether) Righteousness is not whether you turn your face towards East or West, but righteousness is to believe in Allah, the last day, the angels, the Books, the Prophets and to spend wealth out of love for Him on relatives, orphans, the helpless, needy travellers, and those who ask and on the redemption of captives, and to establish prayers, pay Zakat (alms), and fulfil promises when made, be steadfast in distress, in adversity and at the time of war. These people are truthful and pious O believers! Retaliation (law of equality) is prescribed for you in the cases of murder: a free man for a free man, a slave for a slave and a female for a female. But if anyone is pardoned by his aggrieved brother, then bloodwite (ransom for manslaughter) should be decided according to the common law, and payment should be made with gratitude. This is a 18

concession and a mercy from your Lord. Now, whoever exceeds these limits after this, they shall have a painful punishment O men of understanding, there is security of life for you in the law of retaliation so you may learn self-restraint The will is made obligatory before the death of anyone of you who is leaving some property, to bequest it equitably to his parents or relatives. This is a duty incumbent on the righteous If anyone changes the bequest after hearing it, the guilt shall be on them. Allah hears and knows all things But there is no blame on the one who suspects a mistake or an injustice on the part of the testator (will-maker) and brings about a settlement between the heirs. Verily, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful O believers! Fasting is prescribed to you, just as it was prescribed to those before you, so you may learn self-restraint Fasting is prescribed for a limited number of days. Whoever is ill or on a journey, an equal number of days can be made up later. Those who are able to fast but find it hard, a substitute of feeding a poor person each day is prescribed, but it is far better to fast, if only you knew Ramadan is the month in which the Qur'an was sent down as a guide to mankind, with clear teachings showing the right way, and judgment between right and wrong. Therefore, anyone of you who witnesses that month should fast therein, and whoever is ill or on a journey shall fast a similar number of days later on. Allah intends your well-being and does not want to put you in hardship. He wants to complete the prescribed period so that you glorify His greatness and show gratitude to Him for guiding you When My servants question you about Me, tell them that I am very close to them. I answer the prayer of every suppliant when he calls on Me, therefore, they should respond to Me and put their trust in Me so they may be rightly guided It is lawful for you to go to your wives during the nights of Ramadan, they are your garment and you are theirs. God knows what you do secretly among yourselves, but He has turned to you with His mercy and removed this hardship from you. Now you may lie with them skin to skin, and avail yourselves of that which God has ordained for you, so eat and drink until you see the white streak of dawn against the blackness of night and then resume fasting until nightfall. Do not approach your wives during Itikaf (retreat in the mosque during the last ten days). These are the limits set by Allah so do not ever violate them. Thus Allah makes His revelations clear to mankind so that they may guard themselves against evil Do not consume each other s wealth unjustly nor send it as bribery to the rulers so they may aid you to consume a portion of the wealth of the people in sin, you know it is unlawful They question you about the new moon. Tell them, it is to determine the periods of 19

time for the benefit of mankind and for the Hajj (Pilgrimage). It is not right to enter your houses from the back doors during Hajj times. Righteousness is to fear Allah. Enter your homes through the proper doors and fear Allah so you may prosper Fight in the cause of Allah against those who fight you but do not transgress the limits as Allah does not love transgressors Kill them (Events that happened at Hudaybiyyah in the sixth year of the Hijra - Pagans had established an intolerant autocracy, persecuting Muslims, preventing them from visiting their homes and keeping them out by force from performing the Pilgrimage) whenever they confront you in combat and drive them out of the places from where they drove you out. Though killing is bad, creating mischief is worse than killing. Do not fight them within the precincts of the Sacred Mosque unless they attack you there, but if they attack you, slay them, that is the punishment for those who deny the truth If they cease, then know Allah is Forgiving and Most Merciful Fight them, until there is no more Fitnah or oppression or until they acknowledge that worship is for Allah alone. If they cease, then let there be no hostility except, against those who practise oppression The Sacred month, in which fighting is prohibited, is to be respected if the same is respected by the enemy. Sacred things too are subject to retaliation. Therefore, if anyone attacks you, retaliate with the same force, but remain conscious of God and know that God is with those who are conscious of Him Give generously for the cause of Allah, and do not cast yourselves into destruction with your own hands. Be charitable for Allah loves those who are charitable Perform the Pilgrimage for the sake of Allah, but if you are prevented from completing it, send an offering for sacrifice, such as you find, and do not shave your heads until the offering reaches its place of sacrifice. If any of you are ill or has an ailment in his scalp, he should compensate by either fast or feed the poor or offer sacrifice, and when you are in a peaceful condition again, if anyone wishes to continue the Umrah onto Hajj, he must make an offering, such as he can afford, but if he cannot afford it, he should fast for three days during Hajj and seven on his return, ten days in total. This is for those whose household is not in the Precincts of the Sacred Mosque so fear Allah and know He is strict with His punishment Hajj is a well-known month. If anyone undertakes that duty, let there be no obscenity, wickedness nor wrangling in the Hajj. Whatever good you do, be sure, Allah knows it. Take provisions for the journey but the best provision is righteous conduct, so fear Me It is not a crime if you seek bounty from your Lord during the Pilgrimage. When you pour down from Mount Arafat, celebrate the praises of Allah at the Sacred Monument, and 20

celebrate His praises as directed by Him, even though you had strayed before this Then, depart from the place where all the people depart, and ask Allah for His forgiveness. Allah is Forgiving and Merciful Once you ve fulfilled your sacred duties, praise Allah as you used to praise your forefathers, but with more heart and soul. There are some who say: Our Lord! Give us abundance in this world. Such people will not have any share in the hereafter And there are men who say: Our Lord! Give us good in this world and good in the hereafter, and defend us from the torment of the fire Such people shall have their due share in both worlds according to what they have earned, Allah is swift in settling accounts (our actions go before us) Celebrate the praises of Allah during the appointed days. If anyone has to leave in two days, there is no blame on him, if anyone stays on, there is no blame on him as long as his aim is to do right. Fear Allah and know that you will be gathered to Him And of mankind there is one whose speech about this world's life may dazzle you, he may even call Allah to witness what is in his heart, yet he is the most committed of enemies When he turns his back, he directs his efforts towards causing mischief in the land, destroying crops and cattle. Allah does not like troublemakers When he is told to fear Allah, his arrogance leads him to more crime. Hell will be the proper place for such a person, which is indeed an evil refuge And of mankind there is one who would give his life to seek the pleasure of Allah. Allah is affectionate to His devotees O believes enter Islam wholeheartedly and do not follow the footsteps of Satan for he is a recognised enemy to you If you falter after receiving clear signs, then keep in mind that Allah is Mighty and Wise Are they waiting for Allah to come down to them in the shadow of clouds, along with the angels, and make His decision? Ultimately all matters will be presented to Allah for decision Ask the children of Israel, how many clear signs We gave them. Anyone who substitutes the favour of Allah (changes His revelations) after it has come to him, should know that Allah is strict in punishment Life of this world is charming to the unbelievers, they mock the believers but they forget that those who fear Allah, will be in a high ranks above them on the Day of Judgement. Allah gives sustenance without measure to whom He wants Mankind was one nation having one religion. Later when people invented other religions, Allah appointed Prophets as bearers of good news and warnings and revealed to them the Book with True Guidance, so mankind could settle disputes between themselves, but the very people to whom it was given, started disputing after clear arguments had come to them, because of rivalry between one another. Allah has guided the 21
