The Declaration of the Báb a suggested program May 22nd two hours after sunset OPENING PRAYER O Thou kind Lord! Thou hast created all humanity from the same stock. Thou hast decreed that all shall belong to the same household. In Thy Holy Presence they are all Thy servants, and all mankind are sheltered beneath Thy Tabernacle; all have gathered together at Thy Table of Bounty; all are illumined through the light of Thy Providence. O God! Thou art kind to all, Thou hast provided for all, dost shelter all, conferrest life upon all. Thou hast endowed each and all with talents and faculties, and all are submerged in the Ocean of Thy Mercy. O Thou kind Lord! Unite all. Let the religions agree and make the nations one, so that they may see each other as one family and the whole earth as one home. May they all live together in perfect harmony. O God! Raise aloft the banner of the oneness of mankind. O God! Establish the Most Great Peace. Cement Thou, O God, the hearts together. O Thou kind Father, God! Gladden our hearts through the fragrance of Thy love. Brighten our eyes through the Light of Thy Guidance. Delight our ears with the melody of Thy Word, and shelter us all in the Stronghold of Thy Providence. Thou art the Mighty and Powerful, Thou art the Forgiving and Thou art the One Who overlooketh the shortcomings of all mankind. ~ From the Bahá í Writings, Bahá í Prayers, pp SUMMARY OF THE BÁB S DECLARATION AND LIFE This is 23 May, the anniversary of the message and Declaration of the Báb. It is a blessed day and the dawn of manifestation, for the appearance of the Báb was the early light of the true morn, whereas the manifestation of the Blessed Beauty, Bahá u lláh, was the shining forth of the sun. Therefore, it is a blessed day, the inception of the heavenly bounty, the beginning of the divine effulgence. On this day in 1844 the Báb was sent forth heralding and proclaiming the Kingdom of God, announcing the glad tidings of the coming of Bahá u lláh and withstanding the opposition of the whole Persian nation. Some of the Persians followed Him. For this they suffered the most grievous difficulties and severe ordeals. They withstood the tests with wonderful power and sublime heroism. Thousands were cast into prison, punished, persecuted and martyred. Their homes were pillaged and destroyed, their possessions confiscated. They sacrificed their lives most willingly and remained unshaken in their faith to the very end.
Those wonderful souls are the lamps of God, the stars of sanctity shining gloriously from the eternal horizon of the will of God. The Báb was subjected to bitter persecution in Shiraz, where He first proclaimed His mission and message. A period of famine afflicted that region, and the Báb journeyed to Isfahan. There the learned men rose against Him in great hostility. He was arrested and sent to Tabriz. From thence He was transferred to Maku and finally imprisoned in the strong castle of Chihriq. Afterward He was martyred in Tabriz. This is merely an outline of the history of the Báb. He withstood all persecutions and bore every suffering and ordeal with unflinching strength. The more His enemies endeavored to extinguish that flame, the brighter it became. Day by day His Cause spread and strengthened. During the time when He was among the people He was constantly heralding the coming of Bahá u lláh. In all His Books and Tablets He mentioned Bahá u lláh and announced the glad tidings of His manifestation, prophesying that He would reveal Himself in the ninth year. He said that in the ninth year you will attain to all happiness ; in the ninth year you will be blessed with the meeting of the Promised One of Whom I have spoken. He mentioned the Blessed Perfection, Bahá u lláh, by the title Him Whom God shall make manifest. In brief, that blessed Soul offered His very life in the pathway of Bahá u lláh, even as it is recorded in historical writings and records. In His first Book, the Best of Stories, He says, O Remnant of God! I am wholly sacrificed to Thee; I am content with curses in Thy path; I crave nought but to be slain in Thy love; and God, the Supreme, sufficeth as an eternal protection. Consider how the Báb endured difficulties and tribulations; how He gave His life in the Cause of God; how He was attracted to the love of the Blessed Beauty, Bahá u lláh; and how He announced the glad tidings of His manifestation. We must follow His heavenly example; we must be self-sacrificing and aglow with the fire of the love of God. We must partake of the bounty and grace of the Lord, for the Báb has admonished us to arise in service to the Cause of God, to be absolutely severed from all else save God during the day of the Blessed Perfection, Bahá u lláh, to be completely attracted by the love of Bahá u lláh, to love all humanity for His sake, to be lenient and merciful to all for Him and to upbuild the oneness of the world of humanity. Therefore, this day, 23 May, is the anniversary of a blessed event. ~ Abdu l-bahá, The Promulgation of Universal Peace, pp SELECTION FROM THE WRITINGS OF THE BÁB O THOU cherished Fruit of the heart! Give ear to the melodies of this mystic Bird warbling in the loftiest heights of heaven. The Lord hath, in truth, inspired Me to proclaim: Verily, verily, I am God, He besides Whom there is none other God. He is the Almighty, the All-Wise. O My servants! Seek ye earnestly this highest reward, as I have indeed created for the Remembrance of God gardens which remain inscrutable to anyone save Myself, and naught therein hath been made lawful unto anyone except those whose lives have been
sacrificed in His Path. Hence beseech ye God, the Most Exalted, that He may grant you this meritorious reward, and He is in truth the Most High, the Most Great. Had it been Our wish, We would have brought all men into one fold round Our Remembrance, yet they will not cease to differ, unless God accomplish what He willeth through the power of truth. In the estimation of the Remembrance this commandment hath, in very truth, been irrevocably ordained God hath indeed chosen Thee to warn the people, to guide the believers aright and to elucidate the secrets of the Book. A STORY ABOUT THE BÁB S DECLARATION ~ From the Writings of the Báb The stage had been set for centuries, nay for a number of millennia. The long-awaited dawn of an hour when God would send forth His Divine blessings in the form of a Holy Personage was at hand. The date was set in the middle of the 1800s. In the Middle East and in the West there was a spiritual fervor, a great expectation of the coming of a great Messenger of God: to Israel the incarnation of the Everlasting Father, the Lord of Hosts come down with ten thousands of saints ; to Christendom Christ returned in the glory of the Father ; to Shí ah Islam the return of the Imam Husayn; to Sunni Islam the descent of the Spirit of God (Jesus Christ); to the Zoroastrians the promised Shah-Bahram; to the Hindus the reincarnation of Krishna; to the Buddhists the fifth Buddha. 1 The setting was in the southern portion of Persia. Two scholars in Islamic teachings were on a quest to find the promised Qá im (He Who Shall Arise) the messiah-like figure or redeemer of Shí ih Islam, also referred to as the Twelfth Imám, and the Mihdí according to Islamic sayings about the Promised One. It was in the afternoon of 22nd of in 1844 when traveler on a spiritual quest arrived in the city of Shiraz. His name was Mullá Husayn a man of profound scholarship and unbending will. 2 Following the counsels of his teacher, Siyyid Kázim, that he bade his disciples, to leave their homes and their cloisters, to abandon their studies and their debates and go out into the world to seek the Lord of the Age (Sáhibu z-zamán) whose advent had for centuries been the hope of countless millions. 2 Though fatigued after the trying journey from the coast up the precipitous tracks of the rising plateau his mind was alert and his soul yearned for that peace which the attainment of his goal would bring him. As he walked and pondered he came face to face with a Youth of striking appearance. That young Man, who was gentle and gracious and whose turban proclaimed His descent from the Prophet Muhammad, greeted him with great kindness. Mullá Husayn was amazed and overwhelmed by the warmth of this unexpected welcome. It was the courtesy coupled with the dignified mien of this young Siyyid [a descendant of the Prophet Muhammad] which particularly impressed him. Then the young Man invited him to be His guest and to partake of the evening meal at His house. Mullá Husayn mentioned that his companions had gone ahead and would be awaiting him, to which the young Siyyid replied: Commit them to the care of God; He will surely
protect and watch over them. 2 We soon found ourselves standing at the gate of a house of modest appearance, Mullá Husayn has recounted. He knocked at the door, which was soon opened by an Ethiopian servant. Enter therein in peace, secure, [Qur án xv, 46] were His words as He crossed the threshold and motioned me to follow Him. His invitation, uttered with power and majesty, penetrated my soul. I thought it a good augury to be addressed in such words, standing as I did on the threshold of the first house I was entering in Shiraz, a city the very atmosphere of which had produced already an indescribable impression upon me. 2 Mullá Husayn, impressed with the demeanor, graciousness and kindness of his Host, and while hoping to be drawn near to the end of his quest, did not realize at first that his youthful Host was the One whom he sought. Asking his Host to go to evening prayer with his friends, his Host replied, You must surely have made the hour of your return conditional upon the will and pleasure of God. It seems that His will has decreed otherwise. You need have no fear of having broken your pledge. 2 They prayed together. They sat down to converse. And suddenly his Host asked Mullá Husayn: Whom, after Siyyid Kazim, do you regard as his successor and your leader? Furthermore, He asked: Has your teacher given you any detailed indications as to the distinguishing features of the promised One? Mullá Husayn replied that Siyyid Kazim had laid the injunction upon his disciples to disperse after his death and seek the Lord of the Age, and indeed he had given them indications by which they could come to recognize Him. He is of a pure lineage, is of illustrious descent, said Mullá Husayn, and of the seed of Fatimih [The daughter of the Prophet Muhammad, and the wife of Ali. the first Imam]. As to His age, He is more than twenty and less than thirty. He is endowed with innate knowledge... abstains from smoking, and is free from bodily deficiency. 2 Mullá Husayn s youthful Host proclaimed that all those signs were manifest in Him, and was for the moment shocked and bewildered. He tried to resist a claim so breath-taking. But truth looked him in the face. He marshalled arguments. But Truth is its own argument. 2 As they conversed, all the claims that Mullá Husayn laid before Him were explained with clarity and complete satisfaction. He present his Host with a treatise a dissertation on some of the abstruse doctrines and teachings his teachers had enunciated, and asked his Host to elucidate the mysteries which it contained. 2 Not only did his Host after a rapid look through that treatise shed light upon it, He went far beyond it. Then Mullá Husayn was given the proof of which he had ample knowledge. Siyyid Kazim had told Mullá Husayn, when requested by him to write a commentary on the Surih of Joseph, a chapter of the Qur án [1 Surih xii] that tells the story of Joseph, the son of Jacob, he whom his brothers betrayed and sold into slavery, who suffered imprisonment in Egypt, but rose to rule that land. It is highly allegorical. that, This is, verily, beyond me. He, that great One, who comes after me will, unasked, reveal it for you. That commentary will constitute one of the weightiest testimonies of
His truth, and one of the clearest evidences of the loftiness of His position. 2 Mullá Husayn s Host told him: Now is the time to reveal the commentary on the Surih of Joseph. He took up His pen, Mullá Husayn related, and with incredible rapidity revealed the entire Surih of Mulk, the first chapter of His commentary on the Surih of Joseph. The overpowering effect of the manner in which He wrote was heightened by the gentle intonation of His voice which accompanied His writing. Not for one moment did He interrupt the flow of the verses which streamed from His pen. Not once did He pause till the Surih of Mulk was finished. I sat enraptured by the magic of His voice and the sweeping force of His revelation. 2 Mullá Husayn was anxious to rejoin his companions. Since that afternoon - and long ago it seemed - when he had sent them into the city and had himself lingered outside the city-gates, he had had no news of them nor they of him. So he rose and asked to be permitted to depart. His Host smilingly told him: If you leave in such a state, whoever sees you will assuredly say: This poor youth has lost his mind. At that moment, Mullá Husayn has said, the clock registered two hours and eleven minutes after sunset. 2 In that moment a new Dispensation was born. 2 This night, said He who ushered in the new Dispensation, He who was to herald a new cycle, this very hour will, in the days to come, be celebrated as one of the greatest and most significant of all festivals. 2 Then his Host proclaimed to Mullá Husayn: O thou who art the first to believe in Me! Verily I say, I am the Báb, the Gate of God, and thou art the Bábu l-báb, the gate of that Gate. Eighteen souls must, in the beginning, spontaneously and of their own accord, accept Me and recognise the truth of My Revelation. Unwarned and uninvited, each of these must seek independently to find Me. And when their number is complete, one of them must needs be chosen to accompany Me on My pilgrimage to Mecca and Medina. There I shall deliver the Message of God to the Sharif of Mecca. 2 O Lord! Enable all the peoples of the earth to gain admittance into the Paradise of Thy Faith, so that no created being may remain beyond the bounds of Thy goodpleasure. From time immemorial Thou hast been potent to do what pleaseth thee and transcendent above whatsoever thou desirest....the believers must hold gatherings for the Bahá ís at exactly 2 hours and 11 minutes after sunset on May 22nd*..., as this is the exact time when the Báb declared His Mission to Mullá Husayn.
