Kingskerswell C of E Primary Value for Life Week Beginning: 6 th October 2014 Collective Worship Planner Grouping Leader Theme/Content Learning Intention Resources (Music/Visual Aids) Children s Involvement Monday 9:15am Value for Life Reflection time Headteacher /Deputy head / Teachers. Multi-cultural celebrating other faiths. Does anyone know what was celebrated around the world on Saturday 4 th October? Discuss how this was a celebration for a people across the world not something like a birthday. 1. Eid-ul-Adha is a major festival for Muslims, and was begun by the prophet Muhammad. This festival is the greater one of two Eids; the other, Eid-ul-Fitr, celebrates the end of the fasting month of Ramadan. Eid-ul-Adha means festival of sacrifice. The festival remembers the prophet that Christians and Jews call Abraham, but the Muslims call Ibrahim. The festival celebrates Ibrahim s life, and in particular the sacrifice he was prepared to make. Ibrahim took his only son Ismail out into the desert, because he believed that God (whom Muslims call Allah) had asked him to sacrifice the boy. Ibrahim tied the boy up and was about to kill him when Allah intervened and provided a ram to be the sacrifice instead. 2. Later on, Ibrahim took his wife Hajar out into the desert with their son Ismail, and left them there. According to the Christian version of the story, this was because his other wife, Sarah, was jealous of Hajar having a son when she did not, and bullied Ibrahim into literally deserting them. Allah caused a spring of water to appear at their feet, so they survived; later a caravan of traders came across them and took them to the Hymn One more step Prayer
settlement that became modern-day Mecca. Ibrahim visited them from time to time, and when Ismail was 13 they built a Katbah, a space for worship together. Many years later, Mecca became the focus of the Muslim faith. 3. It is such an important festival that in a Muslim country it will be a public holiday a bit like bank holidays in the UK, except that as it is a religious festival, Muslims will take the day off in order to celebrate and to observe the important religious aspects of the festival. 4. Eid consists of a celebration lasting between one and three days. Muslims will go to the mosque for prayers, dressed in their best clothes. In doing so they join with the Muslim community in their own region, in their country, and with the Ummah, the entire Muslim community across the world. They also use this time to thank Allah for all the blessings they have received. Explain that to celebrate Eid Muslims greet each other with Eid Mubarak and send cards with this on, also as a sign of respect other faiths greet their Muslim friends with this greeting too. Reflection Think about what is important for you; maybe your friends or your family. Would you be prepared to give these up if you felt God was asking you to do so? Fortunately, you are unlikely to be put in this position. Eid is a chance to celebrate all that friends and family mean to each one of us.
Think about those people whom you love now, and be thankful. Tuesday Encouraging others. Entrance music of a stormy sea, or an online sound clip of waves crashing. Christian s belief that in times of difficulty they can pray to God for encouragement and strength. It is also important to offer help and encouragement to others facing difficulty. Look at an image of a stormy sea- has anyone ever been on the stormy sea? Which words can they think of to describe the experience? Today s story tells how the apostle Paul faced opposition and physical danger with courage and complete trust in God. He was also able to inspire and encourage those around him, helping them to keep calm and work together. Julius is put in charge of Paul and they board a ship. Paul was not alone on this journey to Rome. First and foremost, the Lord Jesus was always with Paul. Whenever we face difficulty, we are NEVER alone. If we are Christians, the Holy Spirit lives in our heart and is always with us. Many times God puts another believer alongside to encourage us as we go through difficult times. The ship sailed to a place called Sidon and the passengers got off. Julius showed Paul kindness and allowed Paul to go and spend time with his friends and receive care from them. Sailing at this time of the year could be dangerous. The winds blowing on the sea were very strong. The winter season was quickly approaching and sailing would be very dangerous. Paul went to Julius and said, It would be wise not to sail our ship at this time of year. We could safely wait here until winter is over and the strong winds quit blowing. If we don t, this trip will end in disaster with much loss, not only with loss of the cargo but with the loss of many lives. Julius heard what Paul said but he was more persuaded to listen to what the owner of the ship and the sailors said about the trip. The owner of the ship felt that they should move on to a better place to keep the ship for the winter. No one listened to Paul s Hymn Harvest Festival songs for your Key Stage. Prayer - Dear God, Help us when we face problems and difficulties to be courageous and determined. When people we know are struggling, may we be ready to encourage them and help them in any way we can. Amen award.
warning and they began to sail the ship. The ship had not sailed far before the wind began to blow very hard. The wind blew the waves so high that they looked like mountains all around the ship. (Have children make waves and make wind sounds) It was blowing so hard that the captain could not turn the ship back. They were caught in the middle of a terrible storm. It had been dark for many days. No one could see the sun during the day nor stars at night. The winds were still raging against the ship. Luke wrote that they had given up hope that anyone would come and rescue them at sea. Everyone was sure they were going to die at sea. It was a very scary sailing trip! Paul stood up in front of all the men on the ship. He had to speak in a loud voice to talk over the noise of the storm. He said, Men, if you had listened to my warning, we would not have been caught up in this terrible storm. I want to encourage you because last night God sent an angel who stood beside me and said, Don t be afraid Paul, you must be brought before Caesar and God will save all those who are sailing with you. Paul believed God and encouraged the passengers to be brave because it will happen just as God says it will. Paul could have allowed fear to paralyze him. If he would not have believed the words God spoke to him he wouldn t have been able to help the passengers on this boat. What can we take from this story? How did Paul display courage? Wednesday 1.30 pm (KS1) (KS2) Rev John Leonard/ Teachers Value for Life Show the children the home-made Award For rosette and explain that this is going to be presented to some in every class and within our school community who has shown real courage this week. Collective Worship led by Mr Leonard. If taken by teachers Read The owl who was afraid of the dark by Jill Tomlinson. Discuss the value look up definition in dictionary. In the Bible God doesn t simply command courage with no reason behind it. In nearly every incident where God says fear Hymn Touch the Sky (Sing up) Prayer Sharing the story.
not, there follows a reason to have courage, and that reason is God Himself, His nature and His perfect plans. Thursday How does the story reflect courage.
