ISIS-ISIL 4th Hour Group Project
The Kurds By: Autumn Tomasko, Katrina Gensterblum, Claire Destrampe, Kelsey Hall, Danielle Stowell and Justine Lindquist
Who are the Kurds? -The Kurds are an ethnic group in the middle east, mostly inhabiting a region known as Kurdistan, that expands parts of Iran, Iraq, Syria and Turkey. -The Kurds are now fighting for land including their own, and defending their capital, and the Peshmerga have deployed some of their own weaponry against the principle of ISIS. -ISIS defeated Kurdish Peshmerga forces, destroyed several towns of Northern Iraq, the Mosul Dam, and threatening to advance on Ebril.
Kurds-What The Kurds claim to be the largest ethnicity without a homeland and are fighting to change that. The Kurds are a US ally and the US has sent them arms to fight against ISIS. By the end of August the Kurds had taken back most of the territory they had lost to ISIS and are continuing to fight against ISIS in the Syrian Kurdish-Islamic Conflict.
Where do the Kurds Live? There are about 30 million Kurds living today, and 50% live in Turkey, and they make up 20% of Turkey's population. Many other Kurds live in Iran, Iraq and Syria. In Kobani, Syria, bordering Turkey, the Kurds are beginning to fight against ISIS attacks in the town. A Kurdish women named Mayssa is leading a battle against ISIS in Kobane, Syria, she is known to be intelligent and phlegmatic.
Kurds: When Conflict with other areas and the rest of Iraq has been going on for centuries. On July 16, 2013 the current Syrian Kurdish-Islamic Conflict began. This conflict continues to this day.
Why are the Kurds involved? The Kurds are the largest group without a homeland There homeland, Kurdistan, has been forcibly divided and lies within present day Turkey, Iraq, and Iran, with smaller parts in Syria, Armenia and Azerbaijan. ISIS made an advance into the Kurds current territory. America has dropped weapons, ammunition, and medical supplies to Kurdish forces to help fight ISIS.
Sunni By Jacob Wing, Brendan Palkowski, Wes Smith, Austin Krause, Zach Carlson, and Bryce Heatwole
When? Originally was formed in ISIS came to power in And didn t gain publicity until recent times. The original founders of ISIS used the promise of the Sunnis returning to power over the Shia.

Who -Also known as the Shiites; based on the Quran. -Are now divided into three main groups: Twelvers, Ismailis, and Zaidis. -Shia s believe that God chose Ali to be Muhammad s successor.
What - Muslims split into two groups after the death of the Prophet Muhammad, Sunni and Shia - Shias reject Sunni s first 3 caliphs (civil/religious rulers) and believe Ali as Muhammad s first successor - ISIS consider themselves Sunni which creates conflicts with the Shia
Where The Shia majority countries are Iran, Iraq, Bahrain, and Yemen where they are the largest religious group. They also constitute 36.3% of entire local population and 38.6% of the local Muslim population of the Middle East. The Shia Crescent is the crescent-shaped region of the Middle East where the majority population is Shia or where there is a strong Shia minority in the population.
When - No defined date- around July Shia became involved when ISIS (Sunni) started taking over Iraq. - Two groups were established
Why? - ISIS is Sunni Lead and are trying to take over Shia Muslims. - Both want control of their own land and people. - Unfair to the Shia people EX: Sunni- pray 5 times a day Shia- 5 times w/head on rock
US Insurgency in Iraq By Kyle Luoma, Tyler Barge, Hunter Redding, Blake Przysiecki, Alex Theis, Zach Adams
Who United States military withdrawn in 2011, leaving Iraqi Armed Forces in charge Sunni Militant groups undermining the Shia led government After US withdrawal increased violence with the Syrian civil war and Sunnis, or ISIS which has turned the civil war into a regional war
What is it? - The U.S. insurgency in Iraq, also referred to as the Iraqi Crisis is a conflict with the central government and religious groups in Iraq. - In 2011 Obama withdrew troops from Iraq causing a Sunni uprising against the Shia controlled government. - ISIS has formed a coalition within Syria and Iraq, ISIS is currently winning.
Where US has had no direct presence in Iraq since 2011 when we withdrew our troops A number of bombings have occurred since mostly in Baghdad, and Nasiriyah with ISIS taking responsibility Many explosions and car bombs have taken place in Diwaniyah, Karbala, Taji, and Mahmoudiyah
When.Insurgency in Iraq began after the 2003 invasion of Iraq, and lasted throughout the ensuing Iraq war..the first phase of insurgency began shortly after the 2003 invasion of Iraq and prior to the establishment of the new Iraqi government. From around 2004 to May 2007, the insurgency primarily targeted Coalition armies, while latterly, Iraqi security forces, seen as collaborators with the coalition also became targeted.
Why? The post US insurgency in Iraq plays a large role with current conflicts in the Middle East The Syrian civil war and Iraq crisis has allowed for ISIS to be so successful The once oppressed Sunni in Syria and Iraq have joined ISIS and are attempting to overthrow the Shia led government
