7 th August Taqwa Part 4 Sister Eman al Obaid Part 1 Taqwa is To Fulfil the Obligations Worship of the Heart Two wings o Obligations o Abstaining Knowledge What should I Learn? o Kufr, Shirk and Nifaq (Disbelief, Polytheism, Hypocrisy) o Bid ah (Innovation) o Major Sins o To Protect Yourself from Minor Sin Part 2 Taqwa is a Wasiya 1st Factor Knowledge Kuffar, Shirk & Nifaq 2nd Factor Know Allah subhana wa ta'ala Love, Hope & Fear 3rd Factor To do or Leave Battle in the heart Negotiation Part 3 Signs of Taqwa Your Heart is always Grateful to Allah subhana wa ta'ala o Shield of not being grateful to Allah subhana wa ta'ala To be remembered and never forgotten o Shield not to remember the people but to remember Allah subhana wa ta'ala To be obeyed never disobeyed o Shield not to make Allah subhana wa ta'ala angry Part 4 Shield for the halal Shield for the bad Shield for what we cannot avoid Ramadan is the month of the Taqwa. The worship of the Heart, the worship of Allah subhana wa ta'ala which will make us to be among the Muttaqeen. In Ramadan it is easier to obtain the taqwa than at any other time. Why? Because you in training controlling yourself to not drink water, abstaining from things which make Allah subhana wa ta'ala angry, back biting, lying etc. For some people the emphasis is on quantity however this is to please yourself. You need to focus on your heart, Allah subhana wa ta'ala wants your heart. You can read the Qur an in a day, 3 days, but do you know what you are reading, what does Allah subhana wa ta'ala want, this is Kalamullah. You make taqwa and there is a fight in your heart. You are going forward but slower than before. Doing 2 rakat with your heart is harder than doing 20 rakat without 1
your heart. Don t make ibadah to fulfil your desire. You need to please Allah subhana wa ta'ala. Taqwa has 3 elements; Your need a shield You need to know about Allah subhana wa ta'ala love, fear and hope Do and don t do. Then you have the struggle in your heart to be: Shakireen thankful to Allah subhana wa ta'ala Zakireen remember Allah subhana wa ta'ala Obeyed and never disobeyed not to sin intentionally, to be among the Awwaban. You need a shield between you and Allah subhana wa ta'ala s anger. You put up the shield according to the situation. Me and the Taqwa Someone asked Abu Huraira What is taqwa? He gave an answer as a parable. Abu Hurairah (radiyallahu anhu) was asked about taqwa so he asked the questioner whether he had trodden a thorn-infested path. The man said he had. Abu Hurairah asked how he walked on it. The man said: 'When I saw a thorn, I took evasive action, lest I was pricked by it.' Abu Hurairah answered him by saying: 'That is exactly what taqwa means (to take evasive action on seeing sin.' Imagine you are in a forest full of thorns, rocks, obstacles. What will you do? You can do three things: - You will go from the other side to avoid it - You will step on a thorn and step back - You will jump over the obstacles 2
This is you and the taqwa. You are walking to Allah subhana wa ta'ala, to walk to Allah subhana wa ta'ala you need to be in life and life is full of trials. Some people go to Allah subhana wa ta'ala without any scratches, some people with scratches but in the end you will meet Allah subhana wa ta'ala. To meet Allah subhana wa ta'ala with less harm you need taqwa. You are in this life to reach Allah subhana wa ta'ala with the good deeds and to be reformed. In the middle you come across trials and fitnah. If the fitnah comes to you, you need to know how to deal with it, but you don t go to the fitnah. For example you know you are an angry person. Your son is getting married and you know yourself you can t stand someone else with you. Don t go to it. In surat al Hadid Allah says the munafiqeen go to the fitnah. But the believer - if I go to this gathering I will talk bad, so I will not go. 5. To put a shield for the halal If the fitnah comes to you have three choices; You know it is haram you stay away this is the easiest choice. You don t know if it is halal or haram in the beginning it looks good but when you go to it you realise it is not so good you will avoid it. The Muttaqeen avoid it, they don t go into it. 3
Taqwa is a negotiation between yourself. With everyone you meet in life and with everything you have in life, before you go to it ask yourself if that person or this thing, will it take me closer to Allah subhana wa ta'ala or away from Allah subhana wa ta'ala. Make your heart closer to Allah subhana wa ta'ala the thing or person, will it make me to remember Allah subhana wa ta'ala. Does this relationship take me closer to Allah i.e. your husband, your children, your house. Does your house occupy your heart taking you away from Allah subhana wa ta'al?. Or your house can make you closer to Allah subhana wa ta'ala - when see your house you make shukr, you remember Allah subhana wa ta'ala, you obey Allah subhana wa ta'ala. If it takes you closer to Allah subhana wa ta'ala proceed. If you see your house is taking up too much of your time you need to do something with what you have in your heart. Some relationships are 24hours which is very stressful, but you decide, don t deceive yourself, don t hide from yourself. 4
For example before you were reading pages of the Qur an. But what will make you closer to Allah subhana wa ta'ala? Reading one ayah a day you need a balance. If you find your heart is more present reading one ayah you need to do it. Which prayer makes me closer to Allah subhana wa ta'ala? Where do I find my heart? This is how you decide. This is a fight. 6. To put a shield for what is good. If you have two things which are good, which one is better? We need to make taqwa for what is good. For example praying at home or praying at the masjid? Where do you find your heart is better. Put a shield on the thing which is good the shield is taqwa. For example when reading the Qur an your mind is somewhere else. Your nafs is satisfied with more human beings like more. You heart wants to do more but you put a shield, if I read the Qur an slowly with my heart and with all my senses I will find my heart. You need to make taqwa gradually from points 1 to 6. Back to me and the taqwa; 1. You avoid the bid ah i.e. reading surat Yasin everyday, back- biting, etc. if you are not sure you leave it. 2. Something very apparent may look good. For example in a study circle you make friends, but when you meet outside the study circle you are not coming closer to Allah subhana wa ta'ala, you go in the opposite direction, you do not remind each other of Allah subhana wa ta'ala. Either you will learn from them or teach them for the Sake of Allah subhana wa ta'ala. Put a shield on your heart to protect your heart from going to that person and forgetting Allah subhana wa ta'ala you still keep in touch and talk put protect your heart. This is with everything. You don t want to loose the blessings. You want your relationships to continue for ever. 3. The thorns you cannot remove. You know a family member is doing bid ah, back biting etc. so you need to jump over them. You cannot leave them so you need to ignore it i.e. your mother is doing bid ah, you advise her but she keeps on insisting so you jump over her. But what we tend do is back bite about them, especially about the husbands. With the taqwa comes patience. We have thorns infront of us, we are not ignoring it, we are creating more thorns, putting ourselves in a trial by back biting, making more fitnah on ourselves. You need to deal with it. Just avoid it, just ignore it. You have 3 options; 1. sin is very clear you avoid it. 2. sin is not clear you put a barrier 3. something lazim ignore it you are there as if you are not there 5
Umar Abdul Aziz was asked who is Muttaqeen? He said the Muttaqeen will not do or say anything without talking to himself about it will it take me closer to Allah subhana wa ta'ala or further away from Allah subhana wa ta'ala. People say My heart is so clean, whatever I have in my heart I will say it. We have so many things in our heart but we cannot say it we have to control it. Al Muttaqeen is not saying what he wants all the time. Before saying a word the Muttaqeen will decide will this word take me closer to Allah subhana wa ta'ala or take me away from Allah subhana wa ta'ala. Will saying this word give me hasanat or make more thorns for me. Better to make taqwa. You are in a gathering and people start talking, back biting if you are afraid in your heart Allah subhana wa ta'ala will protect you. You make taqwa and go forward. How long will the Taqwa take? Just one second in your heart. First you start with the small things for which the taqwa just takes one second. Then you start making taqwa for a day, then a month. First try to make the taqwa with small things will it increase my faith or not, is this good or bad, this is the battle in your heart. Cowards, heedless people do not have a battle in their heart. You need to be ihdinas siratal musta qeem. Chapter (1) sūrat l-fātiḥah (The Opening) 1:6 Guide us to the straight path - Who will help you in this battle? Chapter (1) sūrat l-fātiḥah (The Opening) 1:5 It is You we worship and You we ask for help. Allah subhana wa ta'ala will help me. Iyyaka na budu wa iyyaka nasta een. Allah subhana wa ta'ala will be my supporter. I need Allah subhana wa ta'ala all the time. The Fruits of the Taqwa in the dunya if you are al Muttaqun Allah subhana wa ta'ala will make your life and all your affairs easy. (65:4) Chapter (65) sūrat l-ṭalāq (The Divorce) 6
InshaAllah to be continued. We ask Allah subhana wa ta ala for His forgiveness and His Mercy. Anything that is good from these notes is from Allah subhana wa ta ala. Any mistakes & misrepresentations are my own. I ask Allah subhana wa ta ala for His forgiveness and to put forgiveness in the hearts of those who read them. JazakAllah Khairan. 7
