Foreword The Western Cpe hs become or is destined to become the tourist cpitl of South Afric. The expected influx of interntionl nd locl visitors to these prts hs mde the different segments of the tourist industry shift into top ger. The Cpe Mzr (Krmt) Society, in keeping with these trends, hs produced this booklet of The Western Cpe, which to dte is the only work of its kind. This booklet hs been long overdue nd will prove to be indispensible to the more mture nd serious visitor to the Krmts of the Western Cpe. Most visitors re t loss concerning the nmes or even the most bsic fcts bout the Sints buried t these Krmts. For genertions, residents of Cpe Town nd its environs hve been visiting these shrines. Since erly times, trditions regrding the history of these Sints, hve been pssed down mostly by word of mouth. This we gree, is not the most relible wy to record history for posterity. Mny people hve set ides nd beliefs bout individul Krmts nd my therefore find the informtion in these pges rther surprising or to sy the lest, different. However, it is not the purpose of this booklet to confuse, but rther to ssist the Krmt visitor. Mny reder, including Muslims, my find words in the text of the booklet which re not fimilir. They re of Indonesin, Mlysin nd Indin origin. A glossry of these terms hve been included. Moreover, visitors to the Krmts re representtives of ll the different fiths. This booklet hs therefore been designed to fford one n insight into this long estblished culture. The sources from which informtion hs been extrcted re numerous. The most noteworthy being Mr. Achmt Dvids, regrded by mny s the doyen of Cpe historins. He hs done extensive nd invluble reserch in this field nd is generlly ccepted s relible. This booklet should prove informtive nd enjoyble to the discerning reder nd would not be out of plce on librry shelf. 4 5

Historicl Bckground The erly history of the Cpe cnnot be neglected for it is here tht locl Muslims hve their roots. Historicl reserch shows tht wht trnspired during the 17th century t the Cpe involved not only the Mlys, but lso lrge numbers of Indins, Jvnese, Benglese, nd even Arbins. In fct, there were more Indins brought to the Cpe thn ny other ntionlity. Therefore, be we Mlys or Indins, our history originted here nd cnnot be ignored. Firstly, we must look t events in the Est which led to Muslims being brought to the Cpe. There ws power struggle between the Dutch nd the Portuguese for supremcy of the ses. These two powers were competing to plunder nd loot s much s possible. In order to do so, they built up lrge nvl cpcity in the Asitic se. The trget centres were plces like Bomby, Go, Cochin, the Cormndel Cost nd Bengl in Indi, Columbo nd Glle in Ceylon, Medn nd Pdng in Sumtr, Ptni in Mlsc, Btvi nd Bli in Jv, s well s smller islnds like Mcssr, Rotti, Timor, Ternte, Tidore nd others. Very soon, the inhbitnts begn to resist nd united to form defences ginst the imperilist tyrnny. The men to led the people were of high clibre; men of gret spiritul intellect who commnded gret del of respect from the communities. They were however cunningly cptured, nd together with their followers, bnished to the Cpe. In the mentime, Jn vn Riebeeck, hd his own peculir problem in the Cpe. His pln ws to estblish Dutch grrison here to defend the se route to the Est, but ll ws not going well. He hd hoped tht the cpture of the locl Hottentot popultion would dequtely serve his lbour force requirements. This proved difficult s the Hottentots soon fled to the interior. Those cptured were too lzy to work. Vn Riebeeck wrote to the Dutch Council in the Est (VOC) to pled for slves. The slves would be used for the hrd lbour, in ddition to which they could be mde to crry stones, build the Fort, mke bricks, dig, plough, sow, plnt nd construct homes. They would lso be used to work the slt mines nd club sels. This mrked the beginning of the Muslim community in the Cpe. The Dutch rrived s conquerors nd slve-msters, nd the Muslims rrived s conquered slves. Some historins hve different view: The slves rrived here with chins round their necks, leg-irons nd hnd-cuffs on their wrists, but their minds could not be chined. These very slves were the leders of resistnce ginst the Dutch colonilists nd exploiters in the Fr Est. These slves did not hve experi- ences in bttles, but they brought with them supr-ntionl ideology of libertion... the ideology of ISLAM. It is sid tht 250 yers go prophecy ws mde tht there would be circle of Islm round the Cpe. According to locl beliefs the circle is complete, comprising the tombs of sints nd uliyh (friends of Allh) who were brought s slves to the Cpe. It strts t the old cemetry on the slopes of Signl Hill, just bove the qurry in Strnd Street, where two sintly men lie buried, the circle continues to two grves on the top of Signl Hill. The circle then continues t grve much revered, situted bove Oude Krl beyond Cmps By, nd sweeps round the mountin to Krmt t Constnti, on the Toki Rod. The circle proceeds to the most importnt nd widely known of ll tombs, the Krmt of Sheikh Yusuf t Fure, on the frm Zndvliet. The circle is completed by n old tomb on Robben Islnd. Modern pilgrims cn visit ll, except the Islnd Tomb, in single dy

Etiquette of visiting Mzr or Krmt Sheikh Abdul Kder de wl drive Wli. One should stnd or sit respectfully t the grveside fcing the Wli. One should void loud nd unnecessry converstions nd worldly indulgence. One should recite the Holy Qurn; even the smllest surh, Durood Shreef, nd indulge in Zikr-ul-lh etc. One should mke du to Allh with the Wseel of the Auliyh fter Esle-e-Swb. When I mke someone my beloved then I become his ers by which he hers, his eyes by which he sees, his hnds by which he holds nd his feet by which he wlks. (Hdith Qudsi). When person reches the stge of Wilyet, then he becomes the Beloved of Allh nd everything he does is done through the power of Allh. A person with such gret sttus is clled Wli-Allh. When the Auliyh physiclly deprt from this erth, then their sttus is still upheld. The grve of Wli is unlike tht of n ordinry person. Their bodies do not decy or perish, but remin intct nd fresh. The Holy Prophet (SAW) hs sid: The bodies of the Ambiyh nd Auliyh remin intct in their grves. Furthermore, the mercy nd blessing of Allh continuously descends on them. In order to distinguish the grve of Wli-Allh from the ordinry person s grve, nd lso s sign of recognition, Chdr or Ghilf is plced on their grves. It is spiritully beneficil to visit the Mzrs of the Auliyh nd prtke in their remembrnce. In hdith of the Prophet (SAW) it hs been reported tht, When the beloved of Allh re discussed, bundnt nd intense mercy of Allh descends on ll those present. This is becuse Allh loves His Auliyh, thus He loves the discussion of the Auliyh. This discussion cn be upheld in vrious wys; which include; reding book on their life histories, struggles, striving in the pth of Allh, emulting their exmples nd ptterns of thinking, lerning to uphold the Sunnh s prctised by Auliyh, lecturing to n udience nd informing them bout the life history of prticulr wli or other Auliyh. As the mercy nd blessings of Allh descend with the remembrnce of the Auliyh, likewise the blessings of Allh descend t the grves of the Auliyh. One should mintin utmost respect when visiting the tomb of Wli. Shoes should be removed. One should be in stte of thrh nd wudhu. It is prohibited to sit on, len ginst or put your feet on grve. No other intention must exist in one s mind beside intending to derive spiritul benefit from the This Qurn is over 300 yers old nd ws hndwritten by the gret-gret-grndfther of Hzrth Sufi Sib (r.), who founded numerous Islmic institutions nd mosques in South Afric

Robben Islnd Tun Mtrh ROBBEN ISLAND 1 Syed Abdurghmn Motur Tun Mtrh difficulties. There re mny legends ssocited with him. He ws known for his wonder cures nd the comfort he brought his fellow prisoners when they were ill. Probbly the most striking legend is tht the islnd ws too smll to hold him. He could come nd go s he plesed, without being detected by the prison wrders. Legend hs it tht he wlked cross the wter to visit his friends in Cpe Town. Tun Mtrh died on Robben islnd. Upon his deth, his grve soon becme respected shrine. Here those who knew him cme to meditte nd seek consoltion for their suffering. Their exmple ws followed by other prisoners who rrived fter his deth. On their relese, they tlked extensively bout the holy mn who lies buried on Robben Islnd. Robben Islnd first gined notoriety s prison for estern politicl exiles, sultns, spiritulists, convicts nd slves. It is s reminder of the injustices nd the illtretment fforded these prisoners tht Krmt is to be found on the islnd. The estern politicl exiles nd convicts re truly the pioneers of Islm in this country; nd thus Robben Islnd becomes very much prt of the history of the Muslims in South Afric. The shrine on Robben Islnd, is symbol of the struggle for the estblishment of Islm. To them it ws lso n indiction of the wonder of Islm. It is n expression of Islm s power, hving survived ll kinds of restrictions, prejudices, imprisonment nd oppression in lnd clled the firest Cpe on the circumference of the erth. Ironiclly, this shrine ws constructed by the Aprtheid Prison uthorities in the 1960s. TUAN MATARAH Tun Mtrh lso known s Syed Abdurghmn Motur ws reputed to hve been very lerned nd religious mn. He spred the messge of Islm nd consoled those experiencing 14 15

Fure Krmt Sheikh Yusuf FAURE 2 Sheikh Yusuf Tun Yusuf During the resistnce ginst the Dutch, mny people died of strvtion rther thn surrender. It ws not long before Sultn Ageng himself ws cptured. Sheikh Yusuf nd Purby gin escped nd continued their resistnce. In September 1683, fter fierce bttle in which the Sheikh ws wounded, he gin mnged to escpe nd fled to Cheribon en route to Mcssr. They were overtken by Lieutennt Eijgel nd completely routed. The wounded Sheikh Yusuf gin escped nd sought refuge in little villge. He lived there in complete destitution, fering betryl. By then, his compny hd been reduced to totl of 24, consisting minly of priests nd four women. Sheikh Yusuf ws born t Mcssr in He ws lso known s Abdin Tdi Tjoessoep. He ws of noble birth, mternl nephew of King Biset of Go. He studied in Arbi under the tutelge of severl pious techers. The cpture of Mcssr by the Dutch, mde it impossible for Sheikh Yusuf to return to his ntive lnd. Thus, when he left Jiddh in 1664 he did not sil to Go, but to Bnten in Western Jv. Sheikh Yusuf ws never to see Go nd Mcssr gin. Sultn Ageng of Bnten offered the Sheikh his dughter s hnd in mrrige, nd ppointed him Chief Religious Judge nd his personl dvisor. In 1680, revolution heded by Pngern Hji, Sultn Ageng s son broke out in Bnten. This revolution ws probbly engineered by the Dutch. By 1683 Sultn Ageng hd rllied enough support nd besieged Pngern Hji in his fortress t Soerdesoeng. The ltter ppeled to the Dutch t Btvi for ssistnce. The Dutch welcomed this opportunity. Sultn Ageng ws defeted but mnged to escpe with prty of 5000 of which 1300 were soldiers. Among them ws the 57 yer old Sheikh Yusuf nd the Sultn s two sons, Purby nd Kidul

Fure Krmt Simon s Town Tun Yusuf 3 Tun De Kos Tun Ismil De Mlel Sheikh Yusuf ws eventully persuded to surrender on promise of prdon in The Dutch never fulfilled their promise nd he ws incrcerted in the cstle of Btvi. At Btvi he ws treted kindly. The Dutch however suspected tht he would ttempt to escpe, nd in September 1684 he ws trnsferred under gurd to the cstle in Colombo, Ceylon. While he ws detined in Ceylon, requests from the King of Go were received for his relese, on the grounds tht his holy presence nd religious guidnce were needed. By then, Sheikh Yusuf ws regrded s Krmt - Sint - for his noble resistnce. The requests mde by the King of Go were refused, nd the Dutch, fering tht ttempts would be mde to rescue him, trnsferred Sheikh Yusuf to the Cpe of Good Hope on 27 June The voyge to the Cpe ws not without mysterious events. En route the fresh wter supply becme depleted nd being fr wy from lnd, this cused deep concern. When Sheikh Yusuf cme to her of this, he merely put his foot in the se, nd told the men to let down the csks in tht spot. When they pulled up the csks, they discovered, to their mzement, tht the wter ws fresh nd perfectly good to drink. It could hve been tht the Sheikh knew tht they were ner one of the fresh wter currents of the cost of Ntl. If so, it clerly displys the extent of his exceptionl knowledge. Nevertheless, the legend lives on in the orl history of the community nd is relted with gret pride by those who believe in his mysticl powers. When Sheikh Yusuf rrived t the Cpe, on the Voetboeg, he ws roylly welcomed by Governor Simon vn der Stel. His Indonesin bckground necessitted tht he nd his 49 followers be settled well wy from Cpe Town. They were housed on the Frm Zndvliet, ner the mouth of the Eerste River, in the generl re now clled Mcssr. He received n llownce of 12 rix dollrs from the Cpe Authorities for support of himself nd his prty. At Zndvliet, Sheikh Yusuf s settlement soon becme snctury for fugitive slves. It ws here tht the first cohesive Muslim Community in S.A. ws estblished. This first settlement of Muslims in South Afric ws vibrnt one, despite its isoltion. It ws from here tht the messge of Islm ws disseminted to the slve community living in Cpe Town. When Sheikh Yusuf died on 23 My 1699, he ws buried on the hill overlooking Mcssr t Fure. A shrine ws constructed over his grve. Over the yers this shrine hs been rebuilt nd renewed. Tody it remins plce of pilgrimge. For hundreds of yers, residents of Simonstown hd known of the existence of two holy shrines situted just bove Runcimn s Drive. There in forest clering bove Goede Gift, people from fr nd wide cme to py their respects. In the erly yers of Simonstown, the community ws smll nd concentrted one ll living within the immedite proximity of the two shrines. While the precise identity of these Auliyh could never be verified, regulr visitors hve been unnimous in their opinion tht buried in these grves re indeed the friends of Allh. Typicl of ll Krmts, the re hs lwys been enveloped in n ur of clm nd trnquility. An mbience heightened by the sound of full strem running long the length of the shrines nd down to the mosque where it collects to form smll pool. Mny hve tried to solve the mystery surrounding the true identity of the Auliyh buried here. Orl history pssed down from genertion to genertion hs shown little devition over the yers. Close fmily members lwys remember being told never to forget their royl heritge their ncestors prince nd princesses of the court

Simon s Town Tun De Kos nd Tun Ismil De Mlel SIMON s TOWN Tun De Kos nd & Tun Ismil De Mlel It ws only erlier this century tht trnsltion of kitb, pssed from genertion to genertion, reveled with ny definite certinty the identity of the Auliyh buried here. Written in ncient Sumbwnese, the kitb identifies these Auliyh s Imm Abdul Krriem bin Imm Jlil bin Imm Ismil of Sumbw in Indonesi. (k Tun Ismil De Mlel nd Tun De Kos). In 1969, second prt of the mystery ws put to rest by UCT student, certin Mr Muller who conducted his theses on the Muslim community in Cpe Town, nd specificlly this re in Simonstown. His reserch findings reveled wht orl history hd climed for centuries tht Tun Ismil De Mlel nd his son, Tun De Kos re of royl descent. His reserch cites the Kitb s the most vluble piece of evidence linking the fmilies of the De royl fmily in Pemngong, Sumbw, Indonesi nd Sultn Khruddin to the De royl fmily in Simonstown. A combintion of reserch nd Kitb reveled fmily tree tht stretched to Sumbw, Jv. Like so mny men of his time, Tun Ismil De Mlel ws brought to these shores in 1779 s politicl exile. Strngely, his birthplce in Pemngong nd Simonstown hs similr demogrphic nd other fetures. Both villges hve the following: While Simonstown is home to Tun Ismil De Mlel nd his son, the Krmt in Pemngong is home to tht of his grndfther; In both instnces the Krmts re remrkbly situted ner strem; on hill; short distnce from mosque; surrounded by smll but thriving Muslim community; well protected from the elements by trees nd history recorded in kitbs written in the Sumbwnese lnguge. Additionlly, both Krmts re surrounded by stories of inexplicble spiritul hppenings. The most often retold, tht of severe fire in the 1940 s tht rored cross the mountin rnges destroying everything in its wke. Mirculously, the fire lepfrogged the re of the buril sites burning its wy round the shrines. On every occsion veldt fire hs swooped through the re since then, the shrines hve been left completely unscthed. This singulr phenomenon is sid to be more thn enough evidence tht the persons buried t these shrines re indeed of gret spiritul ncestry. Appliction to hve the holy sites declred Ntionl Monuments is t present being processed by the Ntionl Monuments Council

Muizenberg Constnti 4 Syed Abdul Aziz 5 Sheikh Abdurhmn Mtebe Shh The prescence of runwy slves in the Flse By re erly in the seventeenth century probbly explins the presence of krmts in Muizenberg nd Simonstown. Very little is known bout the krmt in Muizenberg. An orl source reltes tht this uliyh s grve ws originlly situted on the Muizenberg bech front. The grve ws discovered by ldy who ws directed to it in drem. The grve did not remin here long. After time it ws relocted. There is no clrity bout his nme nd his history is completely unknown. Ws he possibly one of the runwy slves of the Steenbergen mine who were hunted on the Flse By cost s reported by Simon vn der Stel in 1687? F On the 24th Jnury 1667, the ship the Polsbroek left Btvi nd rrived t the Cpe on the 13th of My 1668, with three prisoners in chins. They were Mlys from the West Cost of Sumtr, brought here fter their defet t the Cstle of Soeroesng in One of them ws incrcerted on Robben Islnd, while the other two were sent to the Compny s forest t Constnti. Sheikh Abdurhmn Mtebe Shh, the lst of the Mlccn Sultns, ws one of the two. He ws regrded s Orng Cyen, title which mens mn of power nd influence ; nd viewed s prticulrly dngerous to the interest of the Compny. The Mlccn Sultnte, from which the men cme, ws founded by the Sumtrin prince, Megt Isknder Shh during the fifteenth century. Megt Isknder Shh, ws refugee prince, who fter seeking protection from the Chinese, mde contct with the 22 23

Constnti Sheikh Abdurhmn Mtebe Shh Constnti Sheikh Abdurhmn Mtebe Shh Muslim Arb trders who were then ppering in South-Est Asi. He dopted Islm, under which bnner he embrked on n extensive militry cmpign in the Indonesin islnds nd estblished the first notble Mlysin Empire. By the end of the fifteenth century, Mlcc ws not only the gretest militry power in the Mlysin peninsul, but lso the centre for trde nd Islmic missionry ctivity. The res in which the Mlccn Sultnte hd estblished its influence, presented the strongest resistnce to Portuguese imperilism. Despite this, the entire Mlccn Empire ws grdully cptured, nd by 1511 only the city of Mlcc nd some strongholds in Sumtr remined. The rrivl of the Dutch, compounded the problems of the Sultnte. This did not stop Mlcc from encourging rebellion in the res cptured by the Dutch,. The Dutch ttcked nd subsequently cptured the City in But Mlccn resistnce continued. They still held the fortress t Soeroesng from which they lunched spordic ttcks on the Dutch. During these ttcks the brvery of the young Sultn, Sheikh Abdurhmn Mtebe Shh, ws recognised by his followers, who sw him s Sint, leding them in Holy Wr ginst the enemies of Islm. In 1661, the Dutch decided to ttck Soeroesng, but the cpture of the fortress ws effectively verted. Another ttck followed in 1667, nd fter fierce bttle, Soeroesng fell. The Sultn, Sheikh Abdurhmn Mtebe Shh, nd his two religious dvisors, were cptured. His execution would hve mde him mrtyr, nd thus n inspirtion to his people to continue the wr. The three were thus bnished to the Cpe becoming the first politicl exiles here. Orl history reltes tht Sheikh Abdurhmn Mtebe Shh, soon befriended the slve popultion he met t Constnti, teching them the religion of Islm. He died here in either 1682 or 1685, nd ws buried on the spot, ner the river, where he took his blutions, meditted nd sid his pryers. His shrine is t the gtewy to Klein Constnti. It ws contined in wooden shck quintly situted mongst the trees, djcent to strem of running wter. Visiting the shrine ws unique experience. One felt s if one ws in the living presence of history, stnding in scred spot filled with spiritulism. The plce hd serene tmosphere, with the trnquility sweetly broken by the running wter nd the chirping of birds. The crmped little shck, with its smll window nd grve inside ws wonderful plce. But the old building becme dilpidted nd new structure ws creted. In the process some of the trees were scrificed. A beutiful edifice, designed by one of Cpe Town s leding rchitects, Gwie Fgn, nd constructed by the Cpe Mzr(Krmt) Society

Constnti Syed Mhmud Constnti 6 Syed Mhmud This description in terms of the Records of the Cpe Archives pper to be correct. It illustrtes, however, the beginning of the policy of isolting influentil politicl exiles from the slve popultion. This policy persisted throughout Dutch rule of the Cpe of Good Hope nd hd severe implictions for the spred of Islm in the Cpe Colony. The Shrine is situted some distnce from the rod on Islm Hill in Groot Constnti nd hs beuty ll of its own. The need to wlk up the hill fills you with desire to py your respects to this noble sint in his mjestic court. Syed Mhmud ws spiritul nd religious leder of the Mlccn Empire. The memories of Sheikh Yusuf of Mcssr, Sheikh Abdurhmn Motur of Robben Islnd, Sheikh Abdurgmn Mtebe Shh of Klein Constnti, Syed Mhmood of Islm Hill, Syed Abdul Mlick of Vredehoek, Tun Guru of Scotches Kloof, Syed Mohmed Hsn Ghibe Shh of Signl Hill, Sheikh Nurul Mubeen of Oudekrl nd Syed Jffer of Bkoven to nme but few, were to be kept live. We owe these heroes nd torch berers of Islm nd could never repy them for their scrifices. Subjected to most hrsh forms of cruelty nd torture they never wvered from the true pth. With true commitment nd firmly entrenched llegince, the Cpe Mzr (Krmt) Society grew from strength to strength. From humble beginnings of clening nd repinting the Krmts, mjor refurbishment nd rebuilding projects were undertken nd successfully completed. During these times the support of the public ws overwhelming nd encourged the Society even further. The Cpe Mzr (Krmt) Society is constituted body nd is recognised by the Muslim Judicil Council, the South Africn Ntionl Monuments Council, the Cpe Regionl Services Council, the Cpe Town City Council nd the Correctionl Services Deprtment mongst others. Their proven trck record hs put them on firm stnding with the forementioned orgnistions. The Society s ccounts re udited nnully by n independent uditor. The Sints tught unity nd pece mongst the different fiths. In keeping with this techings mny non-muslims, especilly Christins nd Hindus regulrly visit the Krmts. The publiction of this book, which is the society s ltest venture, will serve s much needed guide for tourists wnting to visit the vrious Krmts in the Western Cpe. This need hs been cknowledged by Cptour who hs over the yers been receiving mny enquiries regrding the krmts from tourists to the Western Cpe. This informtive guide will be distributed loclly, ntionlly nd interntionlly. The Society intends plcing these books on the interntionl mrket due to the influx of tourists especilly from Mlysi, Indi, Indonesi nd the Middle Est.
