2 Merits of Sūrat al-ʿabasa This is a meccan sūrah. The surah that opens with admonishing the Prophet and refers to him as He [who] Frowned and turned away. While the Prophet was speaking to some unbelieving nobles of Quraysh, hoping to convert them, a blind Muslim man came up to learn from him, but in his eagerness to attract the disbelievers to Islam, the Prophet frowned at him. The Prophet is then reproached and told not to concern himself with the disbelievers. It takes its name from the word he frowned (ʿabasa) in verse 1. The surah also deals with the condemnation of man s ingratitude: man becomes self-satisfied and forgets his origin and his final return to God. It is narrated from the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.) that the person who recites this surah will come out of his grave laughing on the Day of Resurrection. Writing this surah as a talisman on deerskin and keeping it in one s possession makes one successful in all his endeavours. If it is recited during a journey, then the traveller will return home safely. Whoever recites this surah with surah at-takweer will be under the shade of the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.) in Jannah.

4 ب ش م الل ي الر ح الر ح م ن م In the Name of Allāh, the All-beneficent, the All-merciful. عظیم اور دائمی رحمج ں هام صے کے والے خدا अल र ह क न भ स ज फड क ऩ र औय अत मन त दम व न ह bi-smi llāhi r-raḥmāni r-raḥīmi

5 ل و ث ع ب س ١ He frowned and turned away موھ هے اس بش رلیا اور پھیرلی پیٹھ उसन त म य चढ ई औय भ ह प य लरम, ʿabasa wa-tawallā

6 ا ن ج اء ى ٢ ع م ا ل when the blind man approached him. کے ان کہ پاس ایک هابیواا گیا इस क यण कक उसक ऩ स अन ध आ गम ˈan ǧāˈahu l-ˈaʿmā

7 ٣ و م ا د ر م ل ع ل ي ز ه And how do you know, maybe he would purify himself, کیا ثمھیں اور معل م شاید وہ پاکیزہ هفس ہ جاثا औय त झ क म भ र भ श मद वह स वम क स व यत -ननख यत ह wa-mā yudrīka laʿallahū yazzakkā

8 ٤ ر ا و ذ ه ع ي ف ج وف الذ ه ر ى or take admonition, and the admonition would benefit him! یا هصیحت حاصو کرلیجا ث وہ هصیحت ا س ا جاثی کام کے म नस हत ह लसर कयत ह त नस हत उसक लरए र बद मक ह? ˈaw yaḏḏakkaru fa-tanfaʿahu ḏ-ḏikrā

9 ٥ اص ج غ و ا م ا م ن But as for someone who is self-complacent, لیکن ج مشجغوی بن بیٹھا ےہ यह वह व मक क त ज धन ह गम ह ˈammā mani staġnā

10 ف ا هت ل ي ٦ ى ث ص د you attend to him, فکر میں کی اس ا پ لگے ہ ئے ہیں त उसक ऩ छ ऩड ह - fa-ˈanta lahū taṣaddā

11 ٧ ا ع ل م ا ل و م ز ه though you are not liable if he does not purify himself. پر ا پ حا لهکہ ک ئی ذمہ داری هہیں ےہ اگر وہ بھی بےن هہ پاکیزہ ह र कक वह अऩन क न ननख य त त झऩय क ई क म भ द य नह आत - wa-mā ʿalayka ˈallā yazzakkā

12 ٨ و ا م ا م ن ج اء ك ش ع But he who comes hurrying to you, لیکن ج کے ا پ پاس دوڑ کر ا یاےہ औय यह वह व मक क त ज स वम ह त य ऩ स द डत ह आ आम, wa-ˈammā man ǧāˈaka yasʿā

13 ٩ و خ ش while he fears [Allah], اور وہ خ ؼ خدا رکھجاےہ بھی औय वह डयत ब ह, wa-huwa yaḫšā

14 ١٠ هت ع و ي ث ل ف ا you are neglectful of him. اس صے ا پ بے رخی کر ثے ہیں त त उसस फ ऩयव ई कयत ह fa-ˈanta ʿanhu talahhā

15 ذ ر ة إ ه ا ث ه ١١ ه ل No indeed! These [verses of the Qurʾān] are a reminder لران دیکھےئ یہ ایک هصیحت ےہ कद पऩ नह, व (आमत ) त भहत वऩ णण नस हत ह - kallā ˈinnahā taḏkiratun

16 ١٢ ف م ر ى ن ش اء ذ ه so let anyone who wishes remember it جس کا جی چاےہ لب ل کر لے त ज च ह उस म द कय र - fa-man šāˈa ḏakarahū

17 ف ص ح ف م ن ر م ة ١٣ in honoured scriptures, باعز ت یہ صحیف ں میں ےہ ऩपवत र ऩन न भ अ ककत ह, fī ṣuḥufin mukarramatin

18 ر ة م ط م ر ف ع ة ١٤ exalted and purified, بلود ج و با ل اور پاکیزہ ےہ प रनतक ठ त, उच च, marfūʿatin muṭahharatin

19 ب ا د ي ص ف ر ة ١٥ in the hands of envoys, لکھےن ایشے وال ں کے ہاثھ ں میں ہیں ऐस क नतफ क ह थ भ यह कयत ह bi-ˈaydī safaratin

20 ه ر ام ب ر ر ة ١٦ noble and pious. ج محجرم اور هیک کردار ہیں ज प रनतक ठ त औय न क ह kirāmin bararatin

21 Sūrat al-ʿabasa ١٧ ل ج و ر ى ا ل هش ان م ا ا هػف Perish man! How ungrateful is he! اهشان اس بات صے لدر کس گیا کہ مارا هاشکرا ہ گیا ےہ पवनठट ह आ भन ठम! क स अक तज ञ ह! qutila l-ˈinsānu mā ˈakfarahū

22 ك ي م ن ا ي ش ء خ ل ١٨ From what has He created him? اصے ا خر کس چیز صے کیا ےہ پیدا उसक ककस च स ऩ द ककम? min ˈayyi šayˈin ḫalaqahū

23 ١٩ ر ى ك ي ف ك د م ن ه ط ف ة خ ل He has created him from a drop of [seminal] fluid, and then proportioned him. اصے هطفہ صے کیا ےہ پیدا کا پھر اس اهدازہ مكرر کیا ےہ तननक-स फ द स उसक ऩ द ककम, त उसक लरए एक अ द ज हय म, min nuṭfatin ḫalaqahū fa-qaddarahū

24 ٢٠ ث م الش ش ر ى ب و Then He made the way easy for him; راصجہ ک لےئ کے پھر اس کیا ےہ ا صان कपय भ गण क द ख, उस स गभ कय ददम, ṯumma s-sabīla yassarahū

25 ٢١ ب ر ى ث م ا م اث ي ف ا ل then He made him die and buried him; پھر اصے م ت دے کر دفوا دیا कपय उस भ त म द औय क रफ भ उस यखव म, ṯumma ˈamātahū fa-ˈaqbarahū

26 ٢٢ هش ر ى ث م إ ذ ا ش اء ا and then, when He wished, resurrected him. پھر جب چاہا دوبارہ زهدہ کرکے اٹھا لیا कपय जफ च ह ग उस (ज पवत कयक ) उ खड कय ग - ṯumma ˈiḏā šāˈa ˈanšarahū

27 ٢٣ ه ل م ر ى ل م ا ك ض م ا ا No indeed! He has not yet carried out what He had commanded him. ہرگز هہیں اس هے حکم خدا ک بالکو پ را هہیں کیا ےہ कद पऩ नह, उसन उसक ऩ य नह ककम क जसक आद श अल र ह न उस ददम ह kallā lammā yaqḍi mā ˈamarahū

28 Sūrat al-ʿabasa ف ل وظ ر ا ل هش ان ط ع إ ل ام ي ٢٤ So let man observe his food: ذرا اهشان اپےن کھاهے کی طرؼ ث هگاہ کرے अत भन ठम क च दहए कक अऩन ब जन क द ख, fa-l-yanẓuri l-ˈinsānu ˈilā ṭaʿāmihī

29 م اء ص ب ا ص ب ب و ا ال ا ه ا ٢٥ We poured down water plenteously, بے شک ہم هے پاهی برصایا ےہ कक हभन ख फ ऩ न फयस म, ˈannā ṣababnā l-māˈa ṣabban

30 ر ض ش كا ث م ش ك ك و ا ا ل ٢٦ then We split the earth into fissures پھر ہم هے زمین ک شگافجہ کیا ےہ कपय धयत क पवश ष र ऩ स प ड, ṯumma šaqqaqnā l-ˈarḍa šaqqan

31 ف ا هب ج و ا ف ا ح ب ا ٢٧ and made the grain grow in it, پھر ہم هے اس میں صے داهے پیدا کػےئ ہیں कपय हभन उसभ उग ए अन ज, fa-ˈanbatnā fīhā ḥabban

32 و ع و ب ا و ل ظ ب ا ٢٨ and vines and vegetables, اهگ ر اور اور ثرکادیاں औय अ ग य औय तयक य, wa-ʿinaban wa-qaḍban

33 ٢٩ خ ا و ه ل و ز ج ه olives and date palms, اور زیج ن اور کھج ر औय त न औय खज य, wa-zaytūnan wa-naḫlan

34 و ح د ائ ق غ ل ب ا ٣٠ and densely-planted gardens, اور گھےن گھےن باغ औय घन फ ग, wa-ḥadāˈiqa ġulban

35 و ف اه ة و ا ب ا ٣١ fruits and pastures, اور می ے اور چارہ औय भ व औय घ स-च य, wa-fākihatan wa-ˈabban

36 ه ع ام ن م ٣٢ م و م ج اع ل ا ل ن as a sustenance for you and your livestock. یہ صب ثمہارے اور ثمہارے جاه روں کے لےئ صرمایہ حیات ےہ त म ह य लरए औय त म ह य च ऩ म क लर ए ज वन-स भग र क र ऩ भ matāʿan lakum wa-li-ˈanʿāmikum

37 ف إ ذا ج اء ت الص اخ ة ٣٣ So when the deafening Cry comes پھر جب کان کے پردے لیامت والی پھاڑ هے گی ا جائے कपय जफ वह फहय कय द न व र प रच ड आव आएग, fa-ˈiḏā ǧāˈati ṣ-ṣāḫḫatu

38 م ف ر ال م ر ء م ن ا خ ي ٣٤ the day when a man will evade his brother, جس دن اهشان اپےن بھائی صے فرار کرے گا क जस ददन आदभ ब ग ग अऩन ब ई स, yawma yafirru l-marˈu min ˈaḫīhi

39 و ا م ي و ا ب ي ٣٥ his mother and his father, اور ماں باپ صے بھی औय अऩन भ औय अऩन फ ऩ स, wa-ˈummihī wa-ˈabīhi

40 و ص اح ب ج ي و ب و ي ٣٦ his spouse and his sons اور بی ی اور او لد صے بھی औय अऩन ऩत न औय अऩन फ ट स wa-ṣāḥibatihī wa-banīhi

41 ئ ذ ش ا ن غ و ي ٣٧ ل ن و و م م ام ر ئ م that day each of them will have a task to keep him preoccupied. اس دن ہر ا دمی کی ایک خاص فکر ہ گی ج اس کے لےئ کافی ہ گی उनभ स प रत म क व मक क त क उस ददन ऐस ऩड ह ग ज उस द सय स फ ऩयव ह कय द ग li-kulli mriˈin minhum yawmaˈiḏin šaˈnun yuġnīhi

42 و ج ى م ئ ذ م ش ف ر ة ٣٨ That day some faces will be bright, اس دن کچھ چہرے روشن ہ ں گے ककतन ह च हय उस ददन य शन ह ग, wuǧūhun yawmaˈiḏin musfiratun

43 م ش ج ب ش ر ة ٣٩ ط اح ن ة laughing and joyous. مشکراثے ہ ئے کھےل ہ ئے ह सत, प रप क ल रत ḍāḥikatun mustabširatun

44 ة ٤٠ و و ج ى م ب ر ئ ذ ع ل ا غ And some faces on that day will be covered with dust, اور کچھ چہرے ا ل د غبار ہ ں گے औय ककतन ह च हय ह ग क जनऩय उस ददन ध र ऩड ह ग, wa-wuǧūhun yawmaˈiḏin ʿalayhā ġabaratun

45 ج ر ة ٤١ ث ر ك ا ل overcast with gloom. ان پر ذل ت چھائی ہ ئی ہ گی उनऩय कर स छ यह ह ग tarhaquhā qataratun

46 ة ٤٢ ػ ئ م ا ول ج ر ف م ال نػ ف ر ة ال It is they who are the faithless, the vicious. یہی ل گ حكیكجا کافر اور فاجر ہ ں گے वह ह ग इनक य कयन व र द य च य र ग! ˈulāˈika humu l-kafaratu l-faǧaratu
