3 Foreword Thanks to Allah I have been approached by brother Dr. Mohamed El Sharkawy, the Chairman of AR RAHMAN Academy for cultural and religious activities to write an introduction about this new educational establishment in the UK. I can say with confidence that the academy is a beacon of light illuminating the path for those in Europe and the UK in particular; and especially for those who wish to learn about the true meaning of Islam according to the teachings of the prophet Mohammed (PBUH). During these turbulent and dangerous times where the whole world is confused about the real message of Islam and the definition of the sayings of the prophet Mohammed (PBUH), AR RAHMAN aims to correct the various misinterpretations of the religion by informing that it is a religion of forgiveness, tolerance, love and kindness towards both Muslims and non Muslims; and that it is a neutral religion against terrorism, extremism and radicalism. Islam is the last message revealed from god, admitting the scriptures that came before it and updating rules and laws without replacing or cancelling the previous scriptures. Islam teaches us that all human beings, Muslims and non Muslims are sons from one father Adam, and from one Mother, Eve. Behold, thy lord said to the angels; I will create a vicegerent on earth They said: Why put on it one who will cause corruption on it and shed blood when we glorify you with praise and proclaim your purity? He said, I know what you know not (Chapter 2 Verse 30). Furthermore, difference in religion should not object to good relations between humanity and it is my pleasure on this occasion to remind everyone that all the religions call upon the people to worship only one God; and follow the examples of all the prophets and the messengers from Adam (AS) to the last Prophet Mohammed (PBUH). The Messenger believes in what has been sent down to him from his Lord, and so men of faith. Each one believes in Allah and His angels and His books and His Messengers. We do not differentiate between any of His Messengers. They say, We hear and we obey. Forgive us, our Lord! And to You is the end of all journeys. (Chapter 2 Verse 285) I would like to say to my dear brother Dr. Mohamed El Sharkawy that may Allah (SWT) reward him for this project of great deed and may Allah (SWT) make this action sincere for the sake of Allah (SWT). Sheikh Omar El Deeb Mohamed Mahmoud. Deputy of the Grand Sheikh of Al Azhar Egypt 2

4 By the Dean AR RAHMAN Academy is fulfillment of a dream, which was conceived many years ago. The idea was born, during my various posts as a teacher. I was officially re-assigned by the Awqaf Ministry from Al-Azhar University, to occupy the position of Imam of the Islamic Cultural Centre in London. My time at the Centre re-enforced the belief in the importance of teaching, and the idea that whether as an individual or an Imam, scholar or parent, I m essentially a teacher. This is clearly transmitted in the following narration of the final messenger of Allah (SWT): It is narrated by Abdullah ibn Amr that Prophet Muhammed (PBUH) happened to pass by two groups (of Muslims) in the mosque and he said, Both of them are good, but one is superior to the other. One group is supplicating and praying to Allah (SWT). If he so wills, he will confer upon them and if he so wills, he will withhold. So far as those who are acquiring the understanding of religion and its knowledge, and are busy in teaching the ignorant, they are superior. Verily I have been sent as a teacher. He then sat down amongst them. Al-Tirmidhi teacher, solicitor and prophet. The Muslim Ummah is based on the true understanding of the Qur an and the Sunnah (Traditions of the Prophet). With this vision in mind we have created AR RAHMAN Academy which is both an educational and religious centre of learning and is not associated with any particular school of thought, but is firmly grounded on the principles of the Qur an and Sunnah. Our programme of study will include, Arabic, Grammar, Balaga, Literature, Islamic studies, Hadith, Qur an recitation, Seerah of the Prophet, short courses and postgraduate degrees. I very much hope you will find a course that suits your needs in this prospectus and I look forward to seeing you study at AR RAHMAN Academy. Dr. Mohamed El Sharkawy, Dean of AR RAHMAN Academy 3 Furthermore, the Bible offers a full description of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) as described by Prophet Jesus (PBUH). When the characteristics of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) were translated into Latin, the meanings that transpired showed him to be a

40 FAQ (Freqeuntly Asked Questions) Why should I be interested in Islamic studies today? Islam is the submission of oneself to one God (Allah). The last teaching that came with Prophet Mohammed (PBUH) is a conclusion of all the teachings that came before. One of the most important requirements in islam is education (The first command in the Qur an for all of us is : Read, Learn). Islam offers and presents a unique pattern of life for living, thought, social conduct, social behaviour and social interaction both within the Muslim community and outside it. An Islamic education would enhance the student s capability to grasp these important concepts which cannot be readily obtained without studying. At a basic level, it is compulsory to learn about formal worship. For a Muslim student, an Islamic course will provide a core grasp and footing of the pillars of Islam, This is necessary as such education is not provided in regular schools and universities. In addition to formal worship, it was worth remembering that the Prophet Muhammad (SWT) said that Islam is transactions and activities. Islam provides a code of behaviour that acts as a guide for family life, business transactions and social interaction. AR RAHMAN is the first and only establishment to provide the opportunity to gain formal accredited diplomas and degrees covering Islamic education in the UK from Al- Azhar. We believe that all students interested in Islam should consider AR RAHMAN alongside their pursuit of British higher education. How will a formal Islamic education help me as a British citizen? Learning Islam in the classroom within a university framework will help the student learn many facets of Islam including important matters related to social interaction and living in peace and harmony with your neighbours. Currently there is a great need for young students to hear and learn about social interaction and using Islam to build ties and bridges in the UK. How much of my time will it take? As the courses are both diplomas and degrees, this is largely up to the student but it is important to be prepared to work hard. We would recommend a minimum of 7 hours per week. 39

41 How will I juggle an Islamic degree/diploma with my full-time degree elsewhere? We are designing our courses to be module based and lectures will be set for 2-4 hours per week. We plan to design lessons around existing commitments. As this is a diploma or degree, then it is important that the student is serious in his desire to formally learn Islamic Studies and be prepared to cover the ground required for achiving modules which counts towards the qualification. Does AR RAHMAN follow a particular school of thought? No. AR RAHMAN is a neutral institution and will teach all the schools of thought. Our main method and source of guidance will be Qur an and Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad (SWT) and we do believe all the schools of thought operate within this framework. Is there an opportunity to visit and study in Al-Azhar, Cairo as part of my course? At the beginning, the course will be entirely based in the UK. However, over time we will work with Al-Azhar to see if we can facilitate such an internship programme in Cairo. However, the student will spend 6-8 weeks in our branch in Egypt to familiarise themselves with Arabic and Islamic culture. Do I need to know Arabic? This answer depends on the depth of knowledge the student seeks. At a basic level, our courses will be in English. In addition, we shall be offering courses in Arabic and we would highly recommend this path for the more dedicated and committed students. How long will typical courses last? A full-time degree can be attained in 3 years, if it is part-time this would likely be 5-6 years. A diploma can be attained in 1-2 years. Is the college is only for Muslims? No, Islam is a universal religion as we welcome many people to apply. Everyone has an equal opportunity to study. Is the college only for men? The Academy is for everyone and we would encourage male and female applicants for study. 40
