1 CIRCULAR TO PARENTS Subject: Cambridge IGCSE English as a Second Language (0510) -Speaking Exam Dear Parents, Cambridge IGCSE English as a Second Language (0510) -Speaking Exam for the session June 2015 will be conducted as per the attached schedule. Candidates without Statement of Entry will not be permitted for the exams. All the students must be present in the school 30 minutes prior to their scheduled time in their school uniform. Transport: Own transport arrangements need to be made to and from the school on the date of examination. 2 ORAL EXAMINATION A FEW GUIDELINES TO HELP YOU PERFORM BETTER Before the exam, concentrate on staying calm and relaxed. Have a light meal, fresh air, exercise and a good sleep the night before. Avoid the company of people who enjoy agonizing over exams. Laughter is good therapy, so you may like to do something light hearted the night before, like watching a humorous video. Come to the venue on time to avoid cramming. In the speaking test, your teacher/examiner will begin by asking a few general questions about yourself / home / school, etc. This is not a part of your examination- it is intended to put you at your ease. You will be handed one assessment card and given a little time to think about the topic given. You will then have a conversation for a few minutes with your teacher/ examiner based on the topic. Try to answer questions as fully as possible. Avoid Yes/ No replies or I don t know. Don t be afraid to take a little extra time to think of replies which will be helpful in keeping an interesting conversation going between you and the examiner. Ask for clarification if necessary with questions like Do you mean..?, Could you repeat it? or I didn t quite understand etc; The highest marks go to the candidates who can show they are capable of abstract thought. Try to think around a topic from many different angles. Be prepared for a wide range of questions. The test is of spoken English, not of subject knowledge. Reasonable accuracy in use of vocabulary and structures is needed if best marks are to be awarded, but a few technical errors will not result in a lower mark if the overall impression is of communicative competence. Remember, communicating effectively in a natural and lively way is much more important than having perfect grammar or pronunciation.
