4 Journal Entry Found The last oasis didn't support us all. Our peach trees weren't growing and we were forced to leave. Its been three nights since we left and were getting low on food. We took as much as we could from our (temporary) home, the rest we had to leave behind. Even our camels and goats were baring with us. I think I may have to eat one of them, my goat is pretty intimidating. I've prayed to Allah multiple times and there's been no sign that he has heard my prayers. i miss my make makeshift home made out of palm trees, I miss knowing that i will have a meal tomorrow, but for now I am hoping for a sight of something on the horizon or over that hill. I pray again that Allah answers my prayers with something for not only my survival but for my whole caravan.

5 Muhammad's life story Muhammad was born in the city of Makkah in 570 A.D. He was an orphan and then raised by his uncle. When he was a teenager he became a caravan leader and a successful merchant. He later got married and had a child but he still was dissatisfied. He then went into the mountains to pray. Then at about 610 A.D he said he was visited by an angel and it told him preach the word of Islam " surrendering to the will of Allah," or God. Then Muhammad returned to Makkah and told everyone to demolish the false gods statues and worship Allah. He also said that the rich should give to the poor and that wealth is not as important as living a good life. He said that when judgment day arrived God would punish the bad and reward the good. Muhammad soon slowly made people believe that his message was true. It spread from his family all the way to Muslims, followers of Islam, and later most of the poor because they wanted the rich to share there wealth with them. On the other hand very rich merchants did not like this message they believed that he was trying to take away there power and wealth so they retaliated by torturing or beating Muhammad's followers to make it hard on Muhammad. Then in 622 A.D Muhammad and the The journey to Yathrib was later known as Hijrah or "Breaking off relationships," in Arabic. The people of Yathrib gladly welcomed Muhammad and his followers and in 622 A.D the Muslims made a new calender.

6 Then there city made Muhammad renamed to Madinah witch means " The city of the prophet." Then the people of Madinah made Muhammad their ruler. He then made laws that he thought that God had given him for all areas of life. He also created a Islamic government that uses it's political power to uphold Islam. He made all Muslims devote there loyalty to the Islamic state above there own tribes. Muhammad also built an army to protect them self's and the city of Makkah feared they would get attacked so in 630 A.D they singed a peace treaty to give control of the city to Muhammad. Then he made it the holy land of Islam and 2 years later Muhammad died but he had begun to spread Islam to all of Arabia. In loving memory of Muhammad

9 Arab Merchant interview!!! Interviewer: How are you so successful? This month we met up with an Arab Merchant and interviewed him about what he does for a living and his is what he had to say. Omar: Well are leaders would give us coin so we can buy and sell goods also Arabic is the language of government and trade so it is very easy to trade between India and Egypt. I also keep very detailed records of all my business deals and I think shall call it banking. Interviewer: I like the sound of that but on with the next question what do you normally sell and trade with people? Omar: I trade many things like spices, cloth, glass, steel, carpets, sugar, rice, lemon, spinach, oranges, saffron, plums, and cotton and i would come back with Ivory, gold, silk, and slaves. Man where those slaves a pain in the butt trying to bring them to the empire. Interviewer: I bet. Interviewer: How did you guys spread Islam through out the world? Omar: We set up trade posts throughout Southeast Asia and when people would stop by we would teach them all about Islam.

10 Interviewer: ok when Muhammad went on his journey would you agree or disagree with what he was preaching? Omar: I would agree but disagree. I agree that Allah is the one true god and we should destroy all fake god statues but once he said that the rich should give to the poor I did not like that because i am pretty wealthy but I worked for every coin so why should I have to give away things that I earned to people that don't deserve it. Interviewer: Ya that's a good point. Interviewer: Ok this is my last question. Interviewer: How are you able to travel with all those goods without getting attacked by Bedouins? Omar: Well I travel in a caravan or a group of merchants so we did not get attacked a whole lot but i have been attacked a few times and lost most of my goods. That is what Omar had to say.

11 Quran and Sunna what are they? Quran The Quran is the holy bible of Islam it contains instructions on how Muslims should live. They are told to be honest and treat others fairly they must honor parents and show kindness to there neighbors and give to the poor. They shall not murder, lie, or steal for those are forbidden and they can not eat pork, gamble, or drink liquor. It also talks about marriage, divorce, famliy life, property rights, and business practices. They also must fulfill the five pillars of Islam. Sunna This is the name given to custom's based on Muhammad's words and deeds. Islam" law code covers all areas of daily life. It applies the Quran to family life, business, and government.
