MANIFESTO FOR THE ROLE OF CO PRESIDENT (HEAD BROTHER) Nesar Torkamani I am a first year undergraduate student from Afghanistan studying Sociology. My family came to England in 2000 and we have lived there since. My hobbies include playing a variety of sports including tennis, snooker and particularly football which I played at semi-professional level and was the captain of my high school and sixth-form teams. I now play for the university football team and am also part of the ISOC futsal team. My other interests lie in politics, reading and studying Islamic history and law. Growing up in a very practicing family, I was fortunate enough to experience the benefits of belonging in an Islamic community. It was in the Friday prayers and Quran lessons in the local Mosque that I realised how important my faith was to me and began to appreciate the brotherhood we have in Islam. Hence why when I came to Warwick I was worried I would lose this yet I was pleasantly surprised that we have a wonderful ISOC that provided me with everything I could possibly need. As a result I now feel keen to ensure others are able to experience this because I know from personal experience that it can be life changing. To be part of the exec team in our wonderful ISOC would allow me to fulfil this goal and share the beautiful religion we have not only with Muslims at Warwick but also non-muslims too. I am currently involved in the ISOC futsal team and will also compete in the FOSIS league against other Islamic societies in the midlands. Having also attended several of the events provided by the society I realise the number of the members we have and the huge pressure that comes with it yet I am confident I am suitable for the position due to my experiences in the past. In school I was part of the student parliament and in sixth form I was chosen to be Head Boy so I feel more than comfortable with big responsibilities and representing other people. These roles illustrate that I am a dedicated and honest individual but what I believe makes me most appropriate for the position is my approachability. I always have time for people and will make it a priority to listen to feedback and recommendations people have as well as any personal problems members may have. As Co-President of the society I plan to build much on the intentions of the recently Discover Islam week program and really attempt to remove the misconceptions people have about Islam. With our religion being scrutinised now more than ever, I want to invite non-muslims to explore our beautiful faith and demonstrate that we can live in peace with another. In the very challenging environment that University is I also really want to encourage existing members to become more involved with events and promote more people to attend congregational prayers. I believe it is fundamental to hold onto our religion in these times and as Co-President I will give it my all to unite the Muslims in Warwick and provide for them. Hence why the reason I have decided to apply for the role of co-president is mainly because I know that it is in this position that I can best contribute and apply the visions I have for the society in the future. This is not to mention that I also see the role as an extremely prestigious position which I would be humbled to be hold. Having just been a member of this diverse society I already feel proud to be a part of it but to be on the exec team is something that I will always cherish and be an experience that I will never forget. I hope I will be given this opportunity and would like to thank you all for taking the time to read this.

Manifesto for the Role of Co-President / Head Sister Jennifer Philippa Eggert My vision for ISoc An inclusive ISoc......where everyone feels welcome, Muslims and non-muslims, brothers and sisters, home students and international students, undergrads and postgraduate students, hijabis and non-hijabis, practicing Muslims and not-so-practicing Muslims, students with families and children and those without. A professional ISoc......that is reliable, efficient and confident. A proactive ISoc... that addresses issues, does her best to change things for the better, shows a presence on campus and engages with Muslims and non-muslims at the University. A friendly ISoc......where everyone is welcomed with a smile and a salam alaikum or a hi, how are you. Why vote for me? Previous ISoc experience (at Warwick ISoc, LSE Muslim Alumni Network, ISocs in Germany and France) Contacts on campus (with the International Office, the PG Hub, at the SU, the Chaplaincy) International experience (including many Muslim majority countries) which helps to put things into perspective and separate culture from religion A postgrad student with a child to ensure the needs of all ISoc members and prayer hall users are addressed, not just those of undergrads More flexible time schedule = more time for ISoc; an ISoc Exec member who is around during (much) of the holidays

MANIFESTO FOR THE ROLE OF: Treasurer NAME: ABOUT ME: I m Hashim Iqbal and I m a second year PPE Student. WHY I WANT TO BE ON THE ISLAMIC SOCIETY EXEC TEAM: I like to think that I m a good team player. I feel like this is not only one of the best societies at the University of Warwick, but also one of the best Islamic Societies in the country and I would like to preserve that as best I can. The University of Warwick is blessed with having an incredibly diverse muslim (and non muslim) student community and I would like to ISOC benefit from this in the coming year. I ve been co- leading a Pro bono Law Society group this year, and budgeting has been a major part of our organisation. WHY I WANT TO RUN FOR THE ROLE OF Treasurer : As paralysing as Asad s often lengthy explanations of what his role encompasses can be, it also comes across as being incredibly rewarding and challenging in an enjoyable sort of way. I am sure that this role will stretch me, but being well aware of how important this society is for both it members and the wider student population, I would ensure that I do my utmost to make next year even more successful. I think my degree course lends itself well to this role. Having somewhat of an understanding on the importance of nuances and subtleties of communication and the more calculative aspect (Economics) to my degree, may suit this role well. VISIONS FOR ISOC: I would like to reach out to more people from all over the university and then hopefully see this preserved long after I finish my role. That would be legacy enough for me. J

NAME: Mohamed Fettah ABOUT ME: MANIFESTO FOR THE ROLE OF BROTHERS EVENTS OFFICER - First year student studying Information Systems Management. Originate from Algeria, but was born in Sierra Leone, I ve also lived in the Netherlands for a few years. I think it s fair to say that I ve been around! WHY I WANT TO BE ON THE ISLAMIC SOCIETY EXEC TEAM: - Having recently been to the FOSIS Winter Conference 2014, the importance of Islamic societies in general was made clear to me. The idea of having a society where Muslim students can be around like-minded students who want to live a similar lifestyle (Islamic events, Quran classes etc.) is essential. - When a student starts university as a fresher, from my experience, they tend to want to get involved in pretty much anything, as long as they make friends. Being there for them from the start, welcoming them and making sure you help them out in whatever is needed are all vital to their university experience. Since I was welcomed in such a way, I believe it is my responsibility to return the favour to upcoming students. - Constantly in the Quran you will hear, Indeed, those who have believed and done righteous deeds (Usually followed by a reward). This tells us that this should be the aim of any Muslim. Believing, is something we can work on from the inside. What better way can someone do righteous deeds than directly being in charge of organising Islamic events, this is my motivation. WHY THIS ROLE: - I m currently part of a team in Birmingham that organise weekly Islamic talks, where I sometimes get into contact with speakers or organise the venue. I believe I can bring the experience of organising such events to this role, as well as the network of speakers I have personally developed. - It is vital that one has the ability of working with different departments to organise a single event, this complexity requires patience. VISION FOR ISOC: - The ISOC exec team are pretty much the front face of the ISOC as well as Islam as a whole, for some people on campus. Representing this religion at such a level is a great responsibility, I think it is therefore extremely important that the team work on themselves as individual Muslims, and I don t think enough is being done for the team specifically in terms of extra Islamic circles, Quran classes, training etc. - Possibly a feedback system after each event where members can voice their concerns/opinions. Also a possible survey at the beginning of each academic year indicating what sort of events should be held.

Manifesto for the role of Brother s Welfare Position Name: Labib Uddin I am a second year engineering student from London. I enjoy Basketball and Badminton so if anyone wants to find a place to get together and take part, feel free to get in contact with me. I wanted to be an exec member because I believe that it is more than just a role to play. I believe it is a responsibility. A responsibility for all brothers and sisters. We are living in a time where the most beautiful religion has the worst depictions in society. I believe the only way to clear these horrible portrayals is by acting in accordance to Islam and the teachings of the prophet (pbuh), so everyone else can see the true beauty of Islam. I want to be at the forefront of encouraging others to live in accordance to this religion so people can question the incorrect stereotypes Muslims face. We have been greatly fortunate to have a Mosque on campus with 24 hour access and I want to be able to look after this privilege and not take it for granted. I want to apply for the role of Brother s welfare position because I have previous experience of being a treasurer for a Mosque, situated in Surrey and also took part in the welfare activities for it. I will use the skills I gained from these positions, to benefit the ISoc. I plan to create a welfare committee to clean up the mosque on a weekly basis. After these clean-ups, I plan on organising events where we can get together and socialise. I hope, in the future, that ISoc will be a society that all people will not hesitate to join. I hope people will be eager to join Isoc so they can use it to gain knowledge or ask questions with regards to Islam.

MANIFESTO FOR THE ROLE OF SISTERS WELFARE OFFICER NAME: Ubah Daahir ABOUT ME: I m a second year Biomedical science student at the university. I am from London, but my family is originally Somali. My birthday is on Boxing day (26 th December), yes the day of the sales! WHY I WANT TO BE ON THE ISLAMIC SOCIETY EXEC TEAM: Since starting Warwick, I have enjoyed my experience as an ISOC member. As we engage with a great deal of non- Muslims at university, I like the idea of the ISOC and taking part in religious activities/discussions. I feel that the past events have been both engaging and educational. I am grateful to the previous teams on doing such an excellent job (Masha Allah) and it would be an honour to help provide a similar experience for others. WHY I WANT TO RUN FOR THE ROLE OF SISTERS WELFARE OFFICER: I m a friendly and approachable person and take responsibility very seriously. I am also very easy to find as I am often in the prayer hall throughout the week (despite trekking from Gibbet Hill!). I have enjoyed being part of the ISOC and would like to become a welfare officer to listen carefully to the feedback from members and act accordingly to help make the ISOC more productive at fulfilling its goals and at being more inclusive. BACKGROUND EXPERIENCE: Currently an ISOC mentor for life sciences/chemistry students. I was actively part of the prefect team at my sixth form, helping out at school events and working with other students a great deal. I was Duke of Edinburgh prefect, so I also participated in the award. This required a great deal of dedication and teamwork skills. I have helped out with many charities/voluntary organisations in the past. This is key for welfare officer, as I would have to run all charity collections. As a team leader in a public speaking competition at school, our group won 3000 for a mental health charity and for the past 6 years, I have been the Youth coordinator for the SMDC, a project in my local community which involves organising events and talks for Muslims that use the centre. I also currently volunteer in the children s department of the local Coventry hospital. VISIONS FOR THE ISOC: I really liked the idea of charity week and the leaflets around the prayer hall encouraging people to donate. As the sisters welfare officer, I would like to help set up regular fundraisers to raise money for those in need. As zakah (charity) is one of the 5 pillars of Islam and we are only students, I think running regular fundraisers e.g. fortnightly would be an excellent way to contribute. This may be financially or by just putting in the effort into the running and maintenance of such events. After speaking to previous ISOC execs, I was informed that the successes and failures of ISOC events were previously recorded in a book. I was hoping to re- introduce this as I feel it would be valuable in order to avoid repeating mistakes and to improve the events for our members. As I would be dealing with complaints and suggestions regarding the prayer hall etc., I would like to introduce a suggestions box. If someone has any suggestions regarding the prayer hall, they can slip their suggestion into the box and I would regularly go through them and take them into consideration. God willing, this would improve our ISOC experience and invite others to do the same.
