1 April 1995 Volume 1 Issue 2 The BSNA Convention A dream come true by Anoop Bhargava apna loves to dream, may be it is in her name or what? She is a sophomore student at MIT and visiting her parents during the spring break. Her parents had come to United States about twelve years back when she was five years old. She had grown up in this country and it had been mostly an interesting and challenging experience for her. On Saturday, her father and mother were watching an old Hindi movie of Dilip Kumar and Madhubala. Sapna got bored, she picked up something from the table to read and went to her bedroom and started flicking channels on the TV. She was also reading what she had picked up from the family room. After changing channels for about fifteen minutes, she finally settled to watch Saturday Night Live. It was one of her favorite shows. She doesn't remember (nor do we) how long she watched the TV but soon she was cruising in the dream-land and this was no ordinary dream. She found herself in the peaceful town of Allentown, Pennsylvania where the first Convention of Brahman Samaj of North America was being held. Her father Viresh had talked to her about the convention in the evening but Sapna had strongly resisted the idea of going there. She had been in many similar events before (generally dragged by her father, as she claims). All she heard in those events were the problems that parents face in raising their children in this foreign land. Nobody wanted to listen to what the children have to say or the problems they face in trying to keep a balance between two different cultures. So even in her dreams she was surprised to find herself there. Must be Dad's conspiracy, she thought. But once she was there, the first thing that struck her was that everything seemed to be in order. She and the family was greeted warmly at Days Inn. The hotel- room was neat and clean and had two double beds. She was glad to find that the hotel had an outdoor swimming pool, volley-ball courts, health and racquet club facilities. After a quick registration (and a cup of coffee), she started mingling around in the crowd. She was glad to find that there were enough people from her own age group. There was one face that looked very familiar to her but she couldn't figure it out. Finally she went and introduced herself. He turned out to be Vinay, her one year senior at MIT. They had seen each other Amitabh Bachchan, Michael Jackson to attend the BSNA convention? Ramesh Pande with Sushmita Sen Not only them but many stellar dignitaries including Sushmita Sen (the Miss Universe), Madhuri Dixit, Salman Khan, and Dilip Kumar will not attend the BSNA convention. Feel cheated? Sorry, just a little editorial joke. It is the season of Holi that induces such jokes. The next sentence is true, honest. Michael Jackson and Amitabh Bachchan will be there, not in their original personality, but as impersonated by our star entertainer Ramesh Pande. See p4. Prof Rama N Sharma The Keynote speaker- A reputed scholar Prof. Rama Nath Sharma, the Key-note speaker at the BSNA convention, is a Professor of Sanskrit in the Department of Hawaiian and Indo-Pacific Languages at the University of Hawaii, Honolulu. He is a Sanskrit scholar of international fame. He has published scores of poems, literary criticisms and articles on linguistics in general, and Hindi linguistics in particular, in journals of repute. His recent publications include books on Hindi and Panini (the famous Sanskrit grammarian of the 5th century BC). Perhaps the most significant contribution of Prof. Sharma is a five volume study on Panini's grammar of the Sanskrit language that started in He has completed four volumes.; three of these have already been published by Munshiram Manoharlal, Publishers of New Delhi. The final volume is expected to be completed by the end of In his own words What a relief! Prof. Sharma received his MA in Hindi Literature from the University of Allahabad and in Linguistics from the K.M. Institute, Agra. He received his Ph.D. in General Linguistics, from the University of Rochester, Rochester, New York. He studied Sanskrit and rituals at home from his father. Prof. Sharma, the eldest son of Sh Raghunath Sharma and Smt.Bacci Devi, was born at Chhata, Ballia in U.P. Prof. Sharma is the worthy son of a worthy father. His father, Sh.Raghunath Sharma, a famous scholar of Sanskrit, was a recipient of certificate of merit and Padmashri from the President of India, and also the first to receive the coveted Rs. 100,000 award, Sanskrit Vishvabharati, from the Prime Minister Brahma-Bharati Publication of the BSNA The Pre-covention Issue

2 From your Editor Welcome to the second issue of the Brahma- Bharati. The first issue was very well received for which we sincerely thank all our readers and authors. We particularly thank those readers who were kind enough to give us their suggestions and comments- compliments as well as criticizms. We have seriously considered all the comments and already introduced some changes in this issue. The most striking change that you may have already noticed is the spelling Bharati instead of Bharti. Your comments on this and the future issues will be most welcome. This is your journal. Please do write to us. Keep your computer keys clicking. A special note of thanks to Mr. Ram Bhargava of Indianpolis for his help and support in bringing out the Brahma-Bharati and the BSNA directory. His press, the Bhar Printing Inc. of Indianapolis, handled the difficult task of printing and mailing the two publications with exemplary efficiency. Some readers inquired about the significance or wisdom of printing the picture of a barking dog in the editorial column. It was actually a mixup. I intended to publish my own picture but by mistake I used the dog s picture since the two pictures looked so much alike. That can not be true, says a friend, because the dog looks smart. All right, the real objective was to convey the message that barking editors dont bite. It is the season of the Holi--the festival of humor and the spring season with all its colors. However, at the moment, sitting in Colorado with several inches of snow outside, Spring feels to be remote. Nevertheless, Holi does bring back nice memories. Recently, a friend told me about the Akhil Bhartiya Moorkh Sammelan (All India Fools Convention) that used to be held in Delhi on the day of Holi every year. An important activity of the convention was the election of the Maha-Moorkh (The greatest fool) who chaired the convention. Once this honor was given to the Mayor of Delhi. In his Presidential speech, the Mayor made the key statement that only fools can save the world. Unfortunately, that proved to be his undoing. The delegates immediately protested that the Mayor had made a wise statement and, therefore, was not worthy of the honor of chairing the great convention. There were many such interesting events. I toyed with the idea of starting a similar activity here. However, my friend is unenthusiastic. It would be impractical, he says, Too many people will qualify. Happy Holi. From your President Dear fellow Brahmans: We have moved forward once again on several fronts. It is heartening to note that our two recent publications, namely the Brahma Bharati and the directory of Brahmans, have been received with great enthusiasm, pride and a sense of accomplishment. The plans have now been finalized for the annual convention set for July 1 and 2, It will be held at the Days Inn Conference Center, in Allentown, Pennsylvania, not New Jersey as previously announced.. This is the most ambitious project undertaken thus far by us. The registration campaign has been very successful as 75% of the rooms have been already assigned. We are planning to welcome up to 400 fellow Brahmans about half of whom will be young adults and children who were born outside India, and will be curiously looking to find what does it actually mean to be a Brahman. Many of the participants are seeing this Your BSNA organization Board of Trustees Members: Ram D. Chaudhary, Oswego, NY (315) ; Onkar P. Dwivedi, Guelph, ONT (519) ; Satya S. This will be the first convention of its type ever held outside India, and this you cannot afford to miss. All signs are that a historic occasion is in the making. Everyone, including the local guests, will be staying at the Days Inn. In my last communiqué, I wrote about our massive mail campaign for new members. The response is encouraging but much more is neded. You have seen how your one name was transformed into a directory of 200 names. Simply stated, you received a return of 200 times the investment in less than a year. The return is actually much larger when one adds the benefit of our own newsletter and an annual convention. Who else, if not you, can tell others about our exceptional achievements to the prospective members. Please lend us a hand. We plan to open Chapters of the BSNA in major metropolitan areas. 3 The same question- the same answer By Dr. Vinod Tewary Same questions come up - again and again. Is the BSNA an attempt to resurrect the infamous Hindu caste system? Is it a narrow minded, conservative, and reactionary association? Is it relevant in the contemporary American context? The answers are also the same- -in that order--no, NO, and YES. No rational person would support the evils of the Hindu caste system. At the same time no rational person would deny or disown his/her own identity. The point is simply this. It is perfectly natural, desirable, and indeed important, that persons of similar interests, culture, or heritage, interact with each other. Once we accept similar people coming together, we automatically introduce a boundary defined by that similarity of interest. At the same time, we transcend some other boundaries. For example, the Hindi Samiti will introduce a barrier of interest in Hindi, but cut across the boundaries of caste, religion, or nationality. An Indian association will cut across the barriers of languages, regions, etc., but will be restricted to Indians. Similarly, the BSNA brings brahman on one platform, and transcends all other barriers of language and regional affiliations. Of course, brahmanatva is much more than just a casual interest. It is a heritage, a specific cultural background, and a philosophy of life. It defines the essence of our personality. It happens that brahmans have been the elite of the Hindu society. However, the argument is not whether being a brahman is better or worse than being something else, but that is what we are..if we disown ourselves, we would lose our basic strength. Hindus have been ruled by others for more than a thousand years. The rulers have always tried to discredit Hindus in general and brahmans in particular because the brahmans were regarded as the biggest threat. Alexander the Great (so-called great) was finally beaten by one brahman, the great Chanakya. Yet, the brahmans did not accept any material benefits. Chanakya, who could become the king, did not even accept the primeministership. Traditionally, brahmans have supported other communities (I am sure there would be exceptions). It is largely because of the constant propaganda by our foreign rulers, that some of us think that it is (pseudo) fashionable to disown our heritage and feel ashamed about our cultural background. Rising above the caste system, or having a friendly attitude towards other communities, does not require that we disown ourselves. It is normal, indeed necessary, to give ourselves a label of identification. For example, all of us have a first name and a family name that defines our family, caste, or subcaste affiliations.. The whole purpose of the name is to provide an identity label. Being a brahman, or whatever our cultural background is, provides a wider identity. We all take pride in our lineage. In order to be pseudo-fashionable, are we supposed to be ashamed of our name, our origin, our family, or ourselves? People who have a strong self-respect, also respect others. If I am proud of my own culture and heritage, I will expect that a person of other culture will also be proud of his/her culture. I will, therefore, have a natural respect for other cultures and communities. On the other hand, if I have an inferiority complex about my own culture, I can not treat the other cultures with any respect. There is something inherently scientific and refreshing about the unity in the diversity of brahmans. The different subcastes of the brahmans like Shuklas, Mishras, etc., are very close and related to each other. The reason is that a traditional brahman marriage is arranged between families of different subcastes. As a Brahma-Bharati April 1995 A word from your General Secretary By Dr. Shyam Shukla This is an appeal to all our members to set aside the period April 15 to May 15 for the membership drive. We ask that you contact 10 prospective members and stay in touch until at least three of them have signed up. Without your active participation, we will not succeed in reaching our modest goal of increasing the membership to 500. BSNA is currently engaged in four initiatives. These are: (i) Directory of brahmans in North America, (ii) a quarterly news letter, Brahma-Bharati, (iii) annual convention, and (iv) Chapters in major metropolitan areas. These are solely for the benefit of the Brahman community. The directory allows us to network with others of similar background and interest. Kids can find the right college, and may be even their first job. Adults may find another person who has tackled the same issues that he or she is facing now or is likely to face in future. The convention could be a place to spend time with friends and relatives, all at one nice location and also at the same time with no dishes to wash or house to vacuum. Housewives please note. The chapters allow a more intimate ************* relationship than it would be possible otherwise. This is where religious and cultural functions are held. Won t you please make those calls today! Choubey On January 21, 1995 a luncheon meeting was hosted by Mr. & Mrs. Kailash and Savitri Sharma of Bronx, New York, at the residence of their daughter and son-in-law, Richa and Shivendra Pandey in Old Bridge, New Jersey, in their absence. The meeting was attended by 22 people. We also had a visitor from Europe. An excellent pot-luck luncheon was arranged by Mrs. Neelam Agnihotri. Most of the time was devoted on the make up of the directory, database and membership registration form. Some attendees felt passionately about many of the questions asked on the forms and would like to see them omitted. This meeting was unique in the sense that not even a single person was opposed to the idea of forming BSNA, and were very appreciative of what had already been achieved. Several members volunteered to help in the membership drive. About half of the attendees were already directory participants and several others have joined us since then. The attendees were Anoop and Rajni Bhargava, Prabudh and Manorama Misra, Kailash and Shiela Sharma, Kailash and Savitri Sharma, Rajendra Shukla, Virendra Nath Ojha, Nand and Munna Jha, Vinod Tiwari, Vinod Bhardwaj (from Holland), Vijay and Ranjana Agnihotri, Neelam Agnihotri, Chandra Pandey, Kavita Pandey, V.P. I lost it. ************* Geeta: Happy birthday, Shanti! Shanti: Thank you. Geeta: How old are you now? Shanti: Forty one. Geeta: Come on, you said the same thing on your last birthday! We whole-heartedly agree, and look forward to dealing with the issues, what worked and what didn't ally unified community gives us a tremendous sense of work in their particular cases. Sapna had a lot to talk and she even got into heated discussion at times but it security along with an open-minded social outlook. Most of us who grew up in India, automatically got was fun to listen to the experiences of people with whom she shared a similar background. After talking separately, the groups came together. Representatives from each group presented their ideas to each other. Over-all, the afternoon sessions helped explain the 'sometime strange behavior' of one age-group to other. Sapna felt that she knew her father better and understood him more after taking part in this exercise, and communicating to him. The evening was reserved for an interesting cultural program. Sapna was surprised at the talent displayed. There were songs, dances, jokes (good, bad and sic). There was even a surprise Indian item straight from Hollywood. He was really funny. Some of the artists were truly professional in what they performed. Sumptuous dinner followed the cultural program. Sapna hurried through the dinner. No, not because she was counting her calories but because after dinner was the program she had been waiting for. The Ball Room was turned into a dance floor and there was the professional DJ with a catchy beat. Sapna met a lot of other people of her age and had a great time. Sapna found out later that her father Viresh had a great time too attending a 'Kavi Sammelan' in the other room. Even Sapna took a walk to that room during one of her dance-breaks and listened to some of the poems (without falling asleep, to her credit). Later Viresh and others joined the dance-crowd. Sapna doesn't clearly remember till what time she danced but next morning she was woken up by her mother because everybody was ready to go for a picnic. The picnic was arranged in a nearby state park. The park had a lot to offer. There was boating, biking, trails, volley-ball and a nice museum. There were lots of games organized for small children and then there were some for 'not so small children'. She really had fun playing 'Jeopardy (Indian Style)'. There was a Yoga Demonstration too. Her mother had a great time playing 'Antakshari'. There was also an informal cultural program. Normally Sapna stays away from such programs, but she was so thoroughly enjoying everything that she offered to sing herself. She picked a popular Hindi song the benefit of the sense of belonging to a community. Joshi, Hira B. and Deepa (Richmond Hill, Ontario); Living here, our children may have missed this advantage. We, therefore, owe it them, to pass on to them the Aracelis (University, MS); Mishra, C.P and Asha Joshi, Madhup (Waikulu, HI); Joshi, Shrikant and great heritage that was bestowed upon us by our (Littleton, CO); Misra, Prabudh (Staten Island, NY); community. This is obviously not an individual problem. It is a community issue. But the community here Chandra and Seeta (Mclean, VA); Pandey, Aneel Misra, Raga and Kamalesh (Hights Town, NJ); Pande, does not live next door. It is spread all over the Madhukar (Nashville, TN); Pande, Ramesh Chandra continent. We need a platform to bring the people (Los Angeles, CA); Pathak, Bhawani Prasad and Rama together to form the community. The BSNA has been (Hamilton, Ontario); Pathak, Manikant and Chanchal created to play just that role. The creation of the (Corona, NY ); Pathak, Sen and Raj (Missouri City, BSNA is a start, an important start, but not enough. The strength of a community is in the Awadesh and Sunita (Laurel, MD); Sharma, Gopal numbers. If you do not like any aspect of the BSNA, or Chandra and Purnima (Severna Park, MD); Sharma, if you feel that it is not adequate, come and change it Jagar and Roshni (Franklin Square, NY); Sharma, from within. We invite you, particularly the younger Kailash C and Shiela (Pomona, NY); Sharma, Kedar people, to use Brahma-Bharati as the medium for and Santosh (Bowie, MD); Sharma, Ramesh and Asha frankly communicating your thoughts. Come and (Flanders, NJ); Sharma, Ramesh C. and Niru (Utica, offer a constructive criticism. We will listen and try to MI); Sharma, Satya Prakash (Richardson, TX); change. Come and make fun of us. We will laugh with Sharma, Sushil and Pavan (Budd Lake, NJ); Sharma, you on our idiosyncrasies. But you have to join us. No Vinod K. and Vinita (Moncton, New Brunswick); body can afford to be a distant observer. If we do not Shukla, Anil and Renuka (Trenton, NJ); Tewary, Rajiv come together today, our children will be rootless and Madhulika (Shreveport, LA); Tiwari, Chandra and tomorrow. He was the founder of Mahatma Gandhi Medical College and the Workers College in Jamshedpur. He was well known in the community as a doctor and a humanitarian.
