Regarded as one of the world s finest teacher and practitioner of the Ashtanga style, David s teaching is infused with humor and attention to detail. We invite the Asthanga Yoga practitioners of all levels to be part of this incredible weekend of yoga. David Swenson began practicing yoga at a very early age. Well not quite as early as the photo but he did begin in 1969 at the age of 13. His older brother Doug was his first teacher. They practiced hatha yoga from whatever books they could find. David's introduction to Ashtanga came in 1973 when he met David Williams and Nancy Gilgoff in Encinitas, California. In 1975 David and Nancy brought K. Pattabhi Jois to the U.S. for the first time and Swenson was fortunate enough to be there. He then initiated studies directly with the master. Swenson made his first trip to Mysore in 1977 and learned the full Ashtanga system as it was originally taught by K. Pattabhi Jois. David Swenson is recognized today as one of the worlds foremost practitioners and instructors of Ashtanga Yoga. David Swenson and Shelley Washington are a dynamic husband and wife teaching team. Their approach to presenting Ashtanga Yoga is full of depth, insight, intuition and integrity. They are experts at breaking down the intricacies of the practice and presenting it in a down-to-earth and comprehensible manner. They patiently and effectively offer practical applications of safe adjusting techniques in the Teacher Training courses and valuable assistance in the Mysore and Lead Classes while keeping a focus on the internal workings of the practice. Their love for yoga and for each other brings joy and laughter to the room as well as a unity of purpose and generosity of heart. Shelley Washington graduated from Julliard School in New York and went on to dance with Martha Graham, Twyla Tharp and American Ballet Theater. She continues to stage ballets for Twyla around the world and is know to be one of a select handful of true experts on the Tharp repertoire. When Shelley discovered Ashtanga yoga she threw herself into the practice with heart and soul. Her passion for the practice brought her to Mysore, India on numerous excursions to study directly with the great Ashtanga master K. Pattabhi Jois. Shelley has also studied with Pattabhi Jois son Manju, his daughter Saraswati and extensively with his grandson Sharath. In addition to her dedication to practicing she is also an accomplished teacher and has been authorized by K. Pattabhi Jois to teach Ashtanga Yoga. Shelley brings a fresh and invigorated energy into the classes she teaches. Her deep compassion, humor, energy, joy and depth of understanding of movement combine to make her a wonderful asset to all of those that have the opportunity to study with her. When not traveling the world Shelley lives in Austin, Texas with her husband David Swenson, their cat, yogi and 16 Koi Fish. Friday July 25th, 2008, David will give a lecture on the basic principles of Ashtanga Yoga followed by a brief demostration. The following days will build layer by layer through the Primary Series while exploring the details and challenges of the Ashtanga practice 2

See You There! 1st SERIES TEACHER TRAINING WITH DAVID SWENSON: This 40-hour course is designed as an intensive immersion into the teaching techniques of the Primary Series of Ashtanga Yoga. IMPORTANT: It is NOT a certification course. Participants will receive a Certificate of Completion at the end of the course but NOT a Teaching Certification. Participants will gain great insights and depth of knowledge as to how to share the practice of Ashtanga Yoga with all levels of students. The information contained in this course is invaluable and will be beneficial to those already teaching as well as to students wishing only to attend to deepen their personal practice.this course will cover the teaching techniques of the Primary Series of Ashtanga Yoga. The participants will learn safe and effective hands-on adjustment techniques through partner work for all of the asanas, practicalities of conducting a class and yoga theory. This is a deep immersion into the details underlying the practice and teaching of Ashtanga Yoga. One need not be a teacher to attend or even desire to be a teacher. Many students have attended this course to merely enhance their personal practice. Those that do wish to teach however will find a wealth of invaluable tools to share with their students. It is necessary for participants to have a consistent personal practice of Ashtanga Yoga and an understanding of the flow and sequencing of the asanas. The course is not designed as an avenue to learn the sequence but rather to learn to teach Ashtanga Yoga or to deepen an existing practice. As in all courses run by David Swenson there is sure to be plenty of laughter and fun as well as an incredible depth of knowledge shared.
