Namami Gange Program LOGO
Design Direction and Philosophy: The logo is made, keeping in mind, the importance of river Ganga and the main objectives of the Namami Gange Program. A bit of research was done for the same and the gist of it was used to design the different elements of the logo and then bringing them together. Origin and Significance of river Ganga: Ganga River originates in the Himalayas and is 2, 510 km (1, 557 meters) long. Originates from Gangotri glacier, one of the biggest glaciers in Himalayas. The place, where Bhagirathi flows out from Gangotri, it called "Goumukh" (Holy site know as char dham. This word means "Cow mouth". Indeed, with use of imagination this icy cave reminds a cow. ) River Ganga is mentioned in the Rig Veda, the earliest of the Hindu scriptures. The Ganga sustains one of the world's highest densities of population and drains an area of approximately sq. kms. Has very fertile soil and has supported the human civilization from time immemorial. Has great economical importance as well as it supports a lot of agricultural practices around its bank Supports a great deal of flora and fauna. Has great religious and cultural importance. As the river supports so much life, it is also personified as Maa Ganga, goddess, in Hindu religion. It is also believed to have descended on Earth from lord Shiva s hair in Hindu mythology. It serves all. Thus it is the National river of India. Present Scenario: The holy river now remains very polluted due to various reasons
Action taken: Namami Gange Integrated Ganga Conservation Mission has been announced as an Integrated Ganga Conservation Mission in the Union Budget of with the aim of Ganga Rejuvenation i.e., restoration of the wholesomeness of the holy river. 11 states of India which forms the entire Ganga basin, will also be covered to achieve this goal. Ganga River Basin Management Plan is being prepared by a consortium of 7 IITs and will specifically cover issues of Aviral and Nirmal Dhara; which means continuous and unpolluted flow of River Ganga. In the process of involving people and better Public participation this will be the first step towards our common and noble goal of Aviral and Nirmal Ganga. Note: The letters highlighted in blue are the keywords which give further design direction. Below I have tried to show several representations of my logo, it meanings. I have tried to justify my logo, keeping in mind all the aspects related to Ganga and this program, so, some of the interpretations are based on Hindu mythology as well, but it is not to give any religion based comments. Ganga belongs to all.. we belong to her..:)
Design Elements The centre part of the logo represents the third eye of Lord Shiva.(here I have depicted lord Shiva because Ganga is believed to have descended from his hair on the Earth.) This shape also looks like the shape of a drop which generally represents water, and the need to conserve it.
The colored part also gives the complete representation of Shiva. The three stripes on his forehead and the third eye.
The 3 stripes also represent the national flag-tricolor. Here I have brought a mention of the national flag, as Ganga is the National river of India.
This This part of the design is also very important it has several interpretations: The part represented in blue shows the formation of letter G which stands for Ganga. The outer area( grey desaturated area) also looks like the letter G. It also looks like the moon on Lord Shiva s hair. The design form from centre twisted area to the free end (broad part), shows Salvation, free from the bondage. In the full colour logo, this blue area is actually white( here shown as blue for convenience), and it has a loose end( merges with rest of the
white page, so it also represents how Ganga starts from the Himalayas, and merges in the great oceans. The red dot in the centre represents motherly feelings related to Ganga. As Ganga supports so may life forms in different ways, it is personified as a mother. It represents fertility and prosperity.
The whole logo is in a circular format, or can be enclosed in a circle. This shape has great importance as Circles commonly represent unity, wholeness, and infinity. Without beginning or end, without sides or corners, the circle is also associated with the number one. It also represents protection.
The logo all over has 11 dots which represent the 11 state that make up the entire Ganga basin, which will also be covered to achieve the objectives of this program.
This shape of water and the blue color represent the calm peaceful waters of Ganga. It represents the healthy flow of the Aviral(nonstop) and nirmal( pure) dhara of Ganga. The blue and white color are kept in balance-. They specically represent cleanliness, a this is the colour that the waters of healthy water bodies look like.
The font for Namami Gange is: - Easy to understand - Creative - Universal appeal ( as it a combination of looks of 2 languages hindi and English. - Similar style can be used for other national languages too. - Its flow goes well with logo and the theme.
- The red dot in namami also shows respect(the red vermillion we use in worship etc.), it could also be referred to as the crimson Sun, whose light rays also fall on the holy Ganga
