P A G E 14 ROAD TO SUCCESS The road to success is not as easy as it seems to be, there are a whole lot of difficulties one has to face to achieve success. The road to success is not straight, there is a curve in between that is failure and a loop called Confusion. But, if one is willing to do hard work no one can stop him to achieve success. In order to achieve success, one must set his/her goals first then develop himself in a positive way, then explore his/her abilities, then organize his/her time and most important is Self Management and Trust in Oneself, as success is only achieved by developing our strengths and not by eliminating our weaknesses.the definition of success varies from person to person, but to me one of the most essential definition of a person s success is the impact they left on other people after achieving success. Most of us these days hold a pre-conceived notion of different socio-economic factors while most of the people are truly impacted by these factors, others overcome these kind of factors and then reach the road to success. Many people throughout history have conquered these obstacles such as poverty, poor education, and poor parental guidance. According to me, it is better to be failure at something you like as it would give you self-satisfaction and experience than to be succeeded at a thing you don't like. In life, as one can surely end up with money, big cars, etc. which equals a decent lifestyle, which may be a kind of potential happiness but dedicating your life to a task that is of little interest, in the long run, will surely ruin your life and I am sure that one will regret living that kind of life. So one should be really very focused about what he wants to do in life, as doing what you love will surely give you personal satisfaction as well as hope to do well in future. So, the road to success comes through Hard Work, Determination, Persistence and Sacrifice. By : RAUNAK KHURANA (XI A)
P A G E 15 The Global Goals Our world is constantly changing. The one thing that hasn t changed throughout the ages is human suffering. With all the strides we make, with all our progress, we haven t been able to alleviate human suffering. Even today more than 3 billion people all over the world live in poverty. Around 785 million people are illiterate. About twothirds of this illiterate population is women. We have been able to reach beyond our planet and walk the surface of Moon and yet we haven t been successful in providing education to people. What does that say about our progress? Progress isn t that which benefits a few people. Progress is that which improves the lives of the masses and makes the world a better place to live in. In order to realize this dream, the United Nations has launched The Global Goals. On September 25 th 2015, 193 world leaders committed to 17 Global Goals that are to be achieved in the next fifteen years. These goals mainly target 3 major objectivesending extreme poverty, fighting inequality and injustice and fixing climate change. These 17 goals are:- No poverty Zero hunger Good health and well-being Quality education Gender equality Clean water and sanitation Clean and affordable energy Decent work and economic growth Industry, innovation and infrastructure Reduced inequalities Sustainable cities and communities Responsible consumption and production Climate action Life below water Life on land Peace and justice strong institutions Partnerships for the goals These 17 goals aim to improve the quality of human life all over the world. In today s era, we are not only the citizens of our respective nations but also Global Citizens. As Global Citizens, it is our duty to ensure that the world is a clean, safe and healthy place for us and for our future generations. As global citizens, our aim is to now make these 17 goals popular so that the leaders of various nations are compelled to act upon them and ensure their success. So, take a step today. Spread awareness and do your part in improving the life of millions of people. You have the power. Seize it and make a difference. If every citizen does his/her part, then no challenge is too big. 16 P A G E 16 A walk in the park For the first time ever, he managed to stick to his morning walks for almost three months. He was in his 2nd round and someone sitting on one of the stone benches caught his eye. Rain or shine, she would sit at the same place and do exactly same thing, day in and day out. While conversing over the phone, she would also write on a piece of paper. He thought to himself that she must be making some sort of sales calls. Her presence painted the same picture every day so much so that his brain must have classified her as one of the fixtures, like a tree or a bush that were a part of the park s landscape. May be the old but bright yellow saree that she was wearing today drew his attention towards her. He deliberately slowed down to pay more attention. She was drawing. What kind of sales calls demanded diagrams? He wondered. He also noticed that she must be in her 50s. Her slippers, her dress and her bag showed that she was not doing financially well. Either that or she had no sense of fashion or may be she was one of those eccentric artists who never cared about their looks. But another Caption thought describing made his heart race. What if she was mentally unstable? An incident when he was 13. One evening, on his way from his tuition, he was forced to take shelter under a sun shade by a sudden downpour. picture or graphic. He was shortly joined by a shabbily dressed woman. Before he could realize what was happening, she slapped him hard across his face and said, Why are you here alone? Shocked with the suddenness of what happened, he ran towards his house. Suddenly, he tripped over something and fell face first on the road and fractured his legs. The pain was excruciating and he had to drag himself for the rest of the way. The severe To catch the reader's attention, place an pain that ensued and the much anticipated school trip that he had to miss had etched a permanent mark on his interesting sentence or quote from the story mind. Since that day, here. he would avoid being around people who were homeless, mentally unstable or even begging. He even hated being around animals, because in his mind all these things were unpredictable and hence dangerous to be around. His friends spared no opportunity to ridicule him and he was constantly humiliated. Now in his early 30s, he found his phobia absurd. This woman was calm and had never disturbed anyone. Though her clothes were old, she was dressed neatly. Even if she was mentally challenged, it s high time that he faced his fear. He cautiously sat at the stone bench and asked her, Do you come here every day? She looked up and stared at him. That stare scared the living daylights out of him. He was thrown aback as he realized that he was not facing his fear but was facing the exact same person that had caused it. Her well combed hair, neatly draped sari and her age had all fooled him. He swallowed any other questions he had, got up and jogged his way out. His mind started playing ugly games. By day it would replay all the nasty memories related to the incident and by night the same would be adapted to create nightmares. After this went on for days, he finally decided that he had to seek a closure. He looked for organizations that work with the mentally challenged and zeroed in an NGO. He stood at a distance when the woman was rescued from the park. She did not acknowledge their presence or words and kept muttering something to herself. Twenty years back, her illness was more physically pronounced from the way she dressed and behaved. But now, unless spoken to, one would not be able to recognize that she was mentally challenged. During her rehabilitation, he would often visit the NGO to track her progress. Without realizing it, he was facing his fears regularly and was also drastically changing the way he saw mental illness. He started seeing that mental illness is managed and not cured. The sufferer cannot be a passive pill swallower but an active effort maker. He patiently waited with a question that Caption only person can answer. Almost a year passed by and finally the day he had been waiting for arrived. He nervously describing sat beside. So do you remember me? Do you remember slapping me, I mean long back? He went on picture to narrate or that fateful incident and midway through his ramblings, he realized that she was staring at him again. graphic. But this stare was not empty or soulless. It was filled with confusion. He sighed and muttered to himself, Right! Am sorry! Who was I kidding? There is no way that you can remember? Just as he clenched his hands on the armrest of the chair to push himself up, she gently touched his hands causing him to sit back instead. As his face was working up a puzzled expression, she said, I do not who you are. But I do know what you did. She paused to overcome the emotion that was trying to choke her words and continued. But, I am so glad that I slapped you that day. Thank you. At that moment he realized that sometimes, we are the answer that we seek. He was looking for answers without realizing that he was the answer to someone else s question. E N D E A V O U R By : Apoorv Rastogi (XI A)

P A G E 18 Julie of the Wolves In 1971, Jean Craighead George and her son, Luke went on a trip to Barrow, Alaska to do research on wolves for an article for Reader's Digest. As they flew into the Barrow airport, she and her son spotted a young Eskimo girl on the tundra, whom her son said "looked awfully little to be out there by herself." At the Barrow Arctic Research Lab, George observed scientists who were studying wolves and attempting to break their communication code. She allegedly witnessed a man bite the wolf on the top of its nose and communicate with it in soft whimpers, and "the incident stayed with George". George herself successfully communicated with a female wolf, and upon remembering the Eskimo girl walking by herself on the tundra that she and her son Luke saw on their way to Barrow, she decided to write a book about a young girl surviving on her own in the tundra by communicating with wolves. The character of Miyax / Julie is based on an Eskimo woman named Julia Sebevan, who taught George "about the old ways of the Eskimos." In the process of writing the novel, George went through three drafts, and the title had been changed numerous times; the first versions of the titles included "The Voice of the Wolf," "Wolf! Wolf?," "Wolf Girl," "The Cry of the Wolf," and "Wolf Song." Readers and students communicated to George their desire to read more about Julie "several years ago", but George felt that she "did not know enough about the Eskimo culture." It was only after her son, Craig, moved to Alaska that George "felt ready" to write the sequel titled Julie. Julie's Wolf Pack was written only after George had learned more about the relationships of wolves in a pack. By : Palak Jassal (VII B)
Lava Lamp Materials: A clean plastic bottle, try to use one with smooth sides : Water Vegetable Oil Common Salt Food Colouring P A G E 19 Instructions: Fill the bottle up about 1/4th (1 quarter) with water. Pour the vegetable oil in the bottle until is almost full. You may want to use a measuring cup with a spout or a funnel. You may have to wait a couple of minutes for the oil and water to separate. Add a few drops of your favourite food colouring. Watch as the colour sinks through the oil. Take a spoon full of salt and add part by part of it into the bottle. Get ready here come the bubbly blobs! How it Works: The oil floats on top of the water because it is less dense or lighter than water. The food colouring has the same density as the water so it sink through the oil and mixes with the water. When you add the tablet it sinks to the bottom then starts to dissolve. As it dissolves it makes gas, carbon dioxide. Gas or air, is lighter than water so it floats to the top. The air bubbles bring some coloured water with them to the top. When the air comes out of the coloured water blob, the water gets heavy again and sinks. It does this over and over again until the tablet is completely dissolved. By : Anuja Haldar (XII Sci)

P A G E 22 Parenting in Digital age Our environment is shaped by the people living in it. Technology has entered as unstoppable and irresistible force and believe it or not it s here to stay and grow. We see ourselves getting dependent and addicted to it. To raise a kid in technology driven society, where he has access to all the questions he will ever have, then why will he need you in coming future? Often parents complain that their children spend most of the time in playing on gadgets or surfing on social networking sites. So the question arises in my mind that Is this generation less emotionally connected with the parents? Or are the parents less open and accepting about their children s choices? It s a thought to think about. We always whine about that this generation will never understand our mindset, I will say that take a trip down memory lane and try to recollect that our parents also used to say the same about us. Parenting in fast paced, changing environment is challenging. If we act as mentor & not pose as a strict parent, then there are ways we could be connected with them like : Being acceptable and adaptable to technology Making the curriculum interesting by using latest technology Playing online games with them Teaching Time Management Skills Sharing the adverse effects of technology if not used appropriately These are some ways mentioned above, if you take the first step towards them you will find plenty of ways to be in their circle of love forever. So parents make a wise choice which is a winwin scenario for all. By : Manika Pal (Counselor) E N D E A V O U R

Website : Facebook Page : Think Right and Feel Great, No Matter What The reason why there is so little happiness in the world is Dependency. Happiness is not dependent on 'anything' or 'anyone' or found 'anywhere'. We keep delaying our happiness until things are just right in our lives. We think we will be happy in the future and then wonder why we are not happy now? We should always remember the fact that- We are the ruler of our lives; we are the master of our own thoughts, words and actions, and everything that happens to us. Happiness is only possible when we are able to accept everyone as they are, at every moment, in every situation. That means an end to judging or resisting others, an end to complaining and blaming, an end to criticizing and controlling and an end to competing with anyone. Happiness means the awakening and acceptance of Self Responsibility. It is only when we choose thoughts and feelings that are aligned with our true nature of Purity, Peace and Love that we can shift from asking to sharing; from holding on to letting go; from expectations to acceptance; from the past and the future to being in the now. We can create a life of joy, contentment and bliss, because we have the Choice and the Power. Happiness is a Decision. So, I would like to conclude with the quote- The happiest people don t have the best of everything; they just make the best of everything. By: Sangeeta Parmar (PGT English)
