1 The reading of Colossians 2:13 by Graham Thomason 11 October, 2018 The Issue Dead in the transgressions or dead to the transgressions? We look at the evidence in the Greek manuscripts. This article at present presents the raw evidence and some observations. The verse, from RP2005 reads: Καὶ ὑμᾶς, νεκροὺς ὄντας ἐν τοῖς παραπτώμασιν καὶ τῇ ἀκροβυστίᾳ τῆς σαρκὸς ὑμῶν, συνεζῳοποίησεν ὑμᾶς σὺν αὐτῷ, χαρισάμενος ἡμῖν πάντα τὰ παραπτώματα, And as for you, being dead in the transgressions and the uncircumcision of your flesh, he has jointly made you alive with him, having forgiven us all of our transgressions, The Manuscripts The Majority Text is split on whether the word ἐν should be read, and NA 28 has the same text but with [ἐν], signifying uncertainty. One might expect a plain dative, so without the preposition ἐν, by analogy with Romans 6:2, ἀπεθάνομεν τῇ ἁμαρτίᾳ, we have died to sin, and Ephesians 2:1 and 2:5, νεκροὺς τοῖς παραπτώμασιν, being dead to transgressions, but in Colossians 2:e manuscripts, uncials and minuscules, are divided somewhat in favour of the preposition ἐν. We have obtained a reading for 591 scans of manuscripts hosted by INTF and CSNTM. We have not considered lectionaries. Known transcripts of a manuscript ([KL]'s "Abschrift") have been excluded. Those examined are the majority of 742 manuscripts that contain(ed) at least some part of Paul's epistles. Of those for which we do not have a reading, 82 have a lacuna at Colossians 2:13, 55 do not have a scan of the page required (or the link is broken, which we have reported), 9 are illegible from the scan or insufficiently legible to be sure of the reading, 2 (minuscules 1643 and 1836) are ambiguous, and 3 are only fragments where the verse cannot easily be identified. Those considered as having a lacuna may only contain a very small part of Paul's epistles; in rare cases the Colossians 2:13 may be present out of sequence, but was not found, though it could be in an unexpected place, e.g. minuscules 1838, The results The results are counted and processed in a separate spreadsheet which goes with this article. The global count of ἐν:dative = 319:272, which gives ἐν a 598% share. If we assume a large unavailable population with a 50% chance of each reading, like an unbiased coin, then the outcome we have from the 591 observations is not particularly significant, and at a 5% confidence level, it is (just) not significant. The Chisquared value is 7 and the probability value is 5.3%. So one cannot be confident that the original population of manuscripts had a majority of ἐν, although a majority of ἐν is the more probable case. When we look at specific subsets of the manuscripts, and look for a significant bias compared to the manuscripts not in the subset, the following features are observed: The 139 Mount Athos manuscripts have a majority reading of the dative, but not 1

2 significantly so. The manuscript subsets from the other larger repositories, the,, London and Sinai do not show a significant bias. An examination per century of the manuscripts shows a tendency to the dative over time, with a significant preference for ἐν in the 10th century, and a significant preference for the dative in the 15 century and later. Manuscripts containing Paul and the apostolos (Acts and the catholic epistles) only, and Paul only, show a significant preference for the dative. Manuscripts including a commentary show a significant preference for the dative. Family 35, although primarily based on gospel readings, shows a significant preference for the dative. We do not have any firm grounds for preferring any one subset to any other, though perhaps a Paul only manuscript would have a more direct line to the autograph. The Table of Observations The table shows the readings of manuscripts for which we have seen an. Manuscripts are numbered with the Gregory Aland (GA) system. We primarily use INTF for scans, but sometimes (also) CSNTM. Many INTF scans are not available to the public without special permission, which we do have. We give detailed references: name, column number and line number. Line numbers in s exclude heading lines but include embedded commentary and even embedded section headings as in minuscule Library references do not include shelf details etc., for which see Wikipedia and [KL]. Libraries may also be of interest regarding which reading they have and similarity of handwriting. A superscript asterisk indicates the first hand; a superscript c a corrector (e.g. 308 *, 308 c ). Scrivener's chart is linen paper. GA numbers with the superscript abs are copies of another manuscript; in such cases the reading of the copy is only of value if the original is unavailable. The entry for a (textually worthless) copy in the table is shaded grey. The table does not show all papyri or uncials of Paul, as most are fragments, and of the 139 papyri to date (Aug 2018), only P46 contains Colossians 2:13 (and P61 contains another portion of Colossians). The following uncials, not in the table, contain some portion of Paul's epistles, but not Colossians 2:13: 015, 016, 062, 082, 088, 098, 0111, 0121, 0122, 0158, 0159, 0172, 0174, 0176, 0183, 0185, 0186, 0198, 0199, 0201, 0205, 0208, 0209, 0219, 0220, 0221, 0222, 0223, 0225, 0226, 0227, 0228, 0230, 0240, 0241, 0243, 0252, 0254, 0259, 0261, 0262, 0270, 0278, 0280, 0282, 0285 (=081), 0289, 0295, 0296, 0310, 031 But for the minuscules, we have attempted to show all manuscripts whether or not they contain Colossians 2:1 The table will be of use to anyone wishing to convert a Gregory Aland (GA) number to a Scrivener number for minuscules of Paul's epistles. References to help convert a GA number to a Scrivener number are (1) [Waltz] (direct conversion, but, only for the more important manuscripts); (2) comparing library references in [KL] and [PI]; (3) Wikipedia articles on individual manuscripts. [Gregory] is useful for conversion from a Scrivener number to a Gregory number, but the latter may not be a GA number. Pinakes (see references) can usually confirm a GA number from a library reference, and is useful in providing library catalogues, usually with GA numbers noted. Various Scrivener Paul numbers appear to have no GA number, because the manuscript is lost or is not a 2

3 New Testament manuscript, or is now regarded as a lectionary, or for other reasons. This applies to the following: 51 p, 119 p, 123 p, 152 p, 168 p, 209 p, 210 p, 218 p, 230 p, 248 p, 254 p, 261 p, 274 p, 303 p, 304 p, 306 p, 309 p, 316 p, 317 p, 320 p, 321 p, 334 p, 361 p, 363 p, 399 p, 400 p, 428 p, 435 p, 465 p, 474 p. The Families The families (including nonpaul) follow, with members taken from Wikipedia. We note that the emphasis is on contents of the Gospels, so the family classification may not apply to Paul's epistles., but it is a valid exercise to look for correlation with the reading of Colossians 2:13 anyway. Members in bold are in the above table. Various statistical chisquared tests are made, giving the chisquared value (X2) and the probability value (PV). A probability value of less than 5% is typically taken to indicate significance; these are in red. Addenda Scrivener collated GA 483, reading ἐν. NA28 confirms reading ἐν in GA 2464, as we surmised but could not confirm. These addenda have not been incorporated in the results; they do not significantly alter the conclusions.
