On behalf of ISKCON Atlanta, we would like to invite all the devotees to attend this year s Festival of Chariots and Panihati Festival at New Panihati Dham. The Festival will be held June 6th, June 7th, and June 8th is a big significant year for our temple. It is the 40th Anniversary of the Installation of Gour Nitai deities in Atlanta. Srila Prabhupada called ISKCON Atlanta as New Panihati Dham. This is a momentous occasion and we would love to have the honor of all of your presence here to celebrate this grand occasion. We are honoring this occassion by putting on a festival in a larger scale with Ratha Yatra in Downtown Atlanta, and the Festival at a Public Park so we can reach out to all the conditioned souls who will have the great opportunity to see Their Lordships Jagannath, Baladev and Subhadra Mayi. Panihati Cida Dahi Utsava The Chida-dadhi Mahotsav, also known as the Chipped Rice Festival of Panihati, is a yearly celebration of the pastimes of Srila Raghunatha dasa Goswami and Lord Nityananda Prabhu. This astonishing pastime took place on the banks of the Ganges at Panihati, which is just north of Calcutta. Lord Caitanya and his associates enjoyed many transcendental pastimes here. Chida-dadhi Mahotsav remembers how the Lord mercifully reciprocated with His devotees by arranging, through Nityananda Prabhu and Raghunatha dasa, to provide an ecstatic feast of yoghurt and chipped rice, along with various other nectar foodstuffs. PANIHATI CIDA DAHI UTSAVA 11 Jun :00 This festival is explained in detail in Sri Caitanya-caritamrita (Antya-lila, Chapter 6). Srila Raghunatha dasa Gosvami was previously a householder and wanted to join the personal association and service of Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu at Jagannatha Puri. However, his father prevented Raghunatha dasa from doing so. After several failed attempts, Raghunatha dasa heard that Lord Nityananda Prabhu had arrived at Panihati. In order to receive the Lord s causeless mercy, Raghunatha dasa went to take His darsana. When Lord Nityananda saw Raghunatha dasa, He ordered him to prepare and serve all of His associates with chida-dahi, flat rice mixed with yoghurt. In order to please the Lord, Raghunatha dasa immediately carried out His order by preparing and distributing large quantities of chida-dahi to the Vaishnavas as well as hundreds of others who had arrived on the spot upon hearing that a festival was on at Panihati. Finally, Lord Nityananda blessed, and ordered His associates to bless, Raghunatha dasa, that he will be successful in attaining the personal association and service of Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu. Panihati is located near Kolkata. Many devotees from Mayapur and Kolkata assemble and jointly conduct kirtanas and massive prasada distribution to the thousands of pilgrims who arrive for the festival.

4 The Chida-dadhi Mahotsav, also known as the Chipped Rice Festivalof Panihati, is a yearly celebration of the pastimes of SrilaRaghunatha dasa Goswami Panihati Chida Dahi Festival Mahotsava - Iskcon Bangalore Panihati, located in the Indian State of West Bengal, is a place of religious importance for the ISKCON community. Panihati has a great and a different... Panihati is a place located in the state of West Bengal, on the banks of Ganges (10 miles north of Calcutta). It was one of the leading trade centers in earlier days when the river route was the main means of communication. A special rice variety called Peneti was imported at this place from Jessore in East Bengal. Probably the name Panihati might have been derived from this trade connection. Once upon a time this place was the center of worship of the Buddhist Tantrics and the Kapalikas. But later, in the sixteenth century, when Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu appeared to propagate the Sankirtana Movement, Panihati became a major center of the Gaudiya Vaishnavas. The residential quarters of Sri Raghava Pandita (one of the associates of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu) still exists in Panihati. The Festival of Punishment The Supreme Personality of Godhead, Sri Krishna, appeared as Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu at Sridhama Mayapura (a quarter in the city of Navadvipa) in Bengal, in the year 1486 AD. The purpose of His incarnation was to establish the Yuga-dharma the congregational chanting the holy names of the Lord. Lord Balarama appeared as Nityananda Prabhu, and many other eternal associates of the Lord appeared at that time to join the mission of the Lord. Srila Raghunatha Dasa Goswami was one of them. Srila Raghunatha Dasa Goswami was a devotee of the highest order. He displayed a spirit of renunciation and detachment from the material world at a very early age. He wanted to leave home and join Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu in His mission. But Chaitanya Mahaprabhu asked him not to do so and assured that Krishna would deliver him soon from the clutches of maya. Two years later, Nityananda Prabhu came to Panihati and stayed there. Raghunatha dasa, who was staying in the nearby village of Srikrishnapura took permission from his father Govardhan Mazumdar and went to Panihati to meet Nityananda Prabhu.

5 At Panihati, he saw Nityananda Prabhu sitting on a rock under a banyan tree on the bank of the Ganges. He was surrounded by many devotees. Raghunatha dasa was hesitant to approach the Lord and paid obeisances from a distance. But some of the devotees noticed him and informed Nityananda Prabhu. Nityananda Prabhu called Raghunatha dasa and said Raghunatha dasa! You are hiding like a thief. Now I have caught hold of you. Come here. I shall punish you today. Then Lord Nityananda forcibly caught him and put His lotus feet on Raghunatha s head. He ordered Raghunatha to celebrate a big festival and serve all the devotees - yogurt and chipped rice. Raghunatha dasa immediately sent his men to the nearby villages to purchase all kinds of eatables. They brought chipped rice, milk, yogurt, sweetmeats, bananas, sugar and other eatables. The chipped rice was soaked in milk. Half of that was then mixed with yogurt, sugar and bananas. The remaining half was mixed with condensed milk and flavored with clarified butter and camphor. All the devotees received two earthen pots, one with chipped rice mixed with yogurt and another with chipped rice mixed with condensed milk. The Chida-dahi Mahotsava is celebrated every year in commemoration of this wonderful pastime. This festival is also known as Danda Mahotsava (the Festival of Punishment) It is celebrated on the thirteenth day of the bright moon in the month of Jyeshta (May-June). To this day, pilgrims visit Panihati to celebrate the Chida-dahi Festival. Celebrations at ISKCON Bangalore ISKCON Bangalore celebrates this festival every year with grand abhisheka for Thier Lordships Nitai Gauranga, followed by a boat festival and distribution of chida-dahi mahaprasadam. Devotees to this day celebrate this festival by performing a bathing ceremony of Sri Gaura Nitai, followed by kirtan and offering of Cida-Dahi along with other food items to Gaura Nitai.

7 Srila Prabhupada named the Atlanta temple New Panihati Dhama in Perhaps it was because we were blessed to have installed the most magnificent and magnanimous Deities in the universe, Sri Nityananda Prabhu and Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. Or maybe, it was because in our humble beginnings, chipped rice and yogurt, the main ingredients in the preparations of the Panihati Festival pots, was a common sight on our plates! Their Lordships Sri Sri Gaura Nitai were first installed in 1973 at the previous temple in Midtown, 23 13th Street. By the end of 1974, we moved to 1287 S. Ponce de Leon, where the temple currently stands. In 1975, Srila Prabhupada blessed us with a visit. Along with the nectar of his instructions, he told us the story of Lord Nityananda s pastime in Panihati Dhama, a small but great village in India. This inspired Balavanta Prabhu, the temple president at that time, to travel to Panihati Dhama with some of the Atlanta devotees. This was our first celebration of the Panihati Festival, right there, under the very same tree where Lord Nityananda started it all. We all felt very fortunate to be there. We had kirtana, then Balavanta Prabhu read from the Caitanya Caritamrita. In the end, we distributed some of the prasadam to the local residents. The area was full of children, and at first they were playing around us very noisily. Being very absorbed in the ecstatic mood of Lord Nityananda, we didn t pay much attention to them, but soon enough, a local elderly man gathered the children and quieted them down, explaining the importance of what was happening and instructing them to be respectful. After returning from India, we decided to celebrate the Panihati festival right here, in New Panihati Dhama. It was 1976, and by then, Lord Jagannatha, Lord Balarama and Subhadra Devi had been installed. We started very humbly, offering chipped rice preparations to the Deities in eight ceramic pots. We continued this every year during Panihati festival time. In 1981, His Holiness Jayapataka Swami visited our temple for the first time. He was so inspired by our efforts to celebrate the festival, that he immediately enlightened us with a grand vision for a Chipped Rice Festival. He explained to us the details of how to prepare the pots, the meaning of each pot, and the ingredients to put into each pot, and we were very impressed. Since 1981 he has personally participated in preparing the pots and offering them to the Deities. He later expanded our small Panihati Festival into a three-day event by including the Ratha Yatra Parade. Without fail, every year he is here with us, adding details to the festival, and making this one of

8 ISKCON s most eagerly anticipated events of the year. Panihati Cida Dahi Festival, June 3, Dallas Giriraj Swami read and spoke from Sri Caitanya-caritamrita, Antya-lila, Chapter 6, on Sunday morning in Dallas. The Cida Dahi Utsava was a great festival held in Panihati, near Calcutta, with Nityananda Prabhu Himself present. There was distribution of prasada, and when the news spread, people started coming. Now people are so fallen that when there is a festival withkirtana and prasada, the general people don t come. But if there were a festival and word spread that the devotees were giving out packets of hundred-dollar notes, so many people would come. So, in those times, when people were pious and they heard there was a festival with prasada being distributed, people came running.
