Page 1 John 14:1-14 Jesus is the Way, the Truth and the Life Encountering Jesus in the Gospel of John 14:1 Don t let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God, and trust also in me. 14:6 I am the way, the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. 1) Jesus is the Way Have you ever had one of those dreams where you are trying to get to a destination and you just can t get there? I had one of those dreams recently. I was in church, somewhere in a room behind the platform, and I knew I had to preach or lead the meeting or both, but I just couldn t get to the platform. Things kept getting in my way or delaying me. I found myself getting more and more frantic and panicked as the music played, the meeting progressed, and I could not get to where I needed to go. Of course there are variations of this dream, including various stages of undress but that s another sermon! (I really must make that appointment with my counsellor!) Or have you ever had one of those interminable journeys, where you just want to arrive at your destination, but it seems you will never get there? I have had a few of those going up and down the M5 and M6! (French holiday journey with Isaac being sick.) It s a bit like the movie: Planes, Trains and Automobiles in which Steve Martin plays an advertising executive on a business trip in
Page 2 New York City trying to return to his family in Chicago in time for Thanksgiving.. You are trying to get somewhere but you don t know how to get there or when you will arrive. Jesus is coming to the end of his ministry and life on earth and he is preparing his followers for what lies ahead. 1-5: Jesus tells them that he is going to his Father s house. He is returning to his Father. He promises his followers that he will prepare a place for them and he will return and take them to be with him He then says: you know the way to the place that I am going to which Thomas replies: 5: Lord, we don t know where you are going, so how can we know the way. We don t know the destination the place you are going - so how can we possibly know the way to get there. Jesus reveals that the destination is GOD. God the Father and his house. 6: I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. The destination is a person GOD the Father.
Page 3 And the way to get there is a person JESUS his Son. We are all of us looking for God whether we realise it or not. For the transcendent. For the something more. For the purpose of life and our existence. For the meaning. We are looking for the destination. We are looking to fulfil the hole that only God can fill. This is why Augustine said: Thou hast made us for thyself, O Lord, and our heart is restless until it finds its rest in thee. It s why Father Smith, the priest in the 1945 novel, The World, the Flesh and Father Smith written by Scottish writer, Bruce Marshall, says to the young woman, Miss Agdala, who is questioning him about God and sex and faith: the young man who rings the bell at the brothel is unconsciously looking for God. We were made for intimacy, for connectedness, for relationship first with God and then with each other. We were made to relate to God and so our hearts remain restless and searching, and lost, until they find rest in God. Food, drink, drugs, sex in all its forms, work, busyness, family, religion, doing good.. anything and everything else is a stop gap, saltwater that never satisfies our thirst, but only intensifies it.
Page 4 What we are looking for what we need the destination that we can never seem to reach, like in a bad dream, or a never-ending journey is God himself. Our Father. This, says Jesus, is the destination. It is not a thing it is a person. And I am the way to get there. If you want to see God, to encounter God, to know God, to have a relationship with God.. Jesus is the way. The Son is the image of the invisible God. (Col. 1:15) Are there various gateways or paths to God and to heaven? Are all the world s religions simply different aspects of the same diamond, different expressions of the same faith, different pathways to the same destination, so that it doesn t ultimately matter whether you are a Hindu, a Muslim, a Buddhist or a Christian what matters is your sincere faith and belief and goodness and you will ultimately get there in the end? Isn t it just the case that we all worship the same god we just have different names for him?
Page 5 Wouldn t any claim to be the exclusive way to God, the only way to God, the unique way to God, the single pathway to God, the only door or gate to God, be arrogant and condescending and ultimately foolish? If you seriously examine the teachings of Jesus and the Bible, you have to end up at the point where you acknowledge that Jesus made such exclusive claims. This passage is one such occasion: I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. (John 14:6) No-one except. These are very exclusive, unequivocal terms. No-one comes to the Father to God no-one at all. Not a single person in all the world. Except exclusively through me Jesus. The only people who will have access to God will have it through Jesus Christ. We find another straightforward statement like this in the book of Acts: Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved." (Acts 4:12)
Page 6 You won t find salvation in any other way or in any other name. No one else. There is simply no other name by which we are saved. There is no other way to get to God. 2) Jesus is the Truth The apostle Paul wrote to some Christians in a place called Colossae. In their culture and time, there was a lot of stuff swirling around about truth and knowledge secret knowledge that only the especially enlightened could experience and perceive. This teaching was called Gnosticism which means having knowledge. That kind of stuff is still around today in the form of cults and religions like scientology, books like The Secret, many forms of new age spirituality and the like. In response to all of this, Paul writes to the Christians and he says that he wants them to: know the mystery of God, namely, Christ He goes on to say: All the richest treasures of wisdom and knowledge are embedded in that mystery and nowhere else. And we ve been shown the mystery! I m telling you this because I don t want anyone leading you off on some wild-goose chase, after other socalled mysteries, or the Secret. (MSG) Forget secret knowledge and mysteries, esoteric experiences and religious rituals.
Page 7 All the knowledge and wisdom of God all the truth that you will ever need is found in Jesus Jesus said: I am the truth. If you want to see God and experience God and know God, look at me. If you want truth come to me. You will know the truth and the truth will set you free. If you have seen me, and known me, you have seen the Father I am the way, the truth and the life. 3) Jesus is the Life At the start of his gospel, John writes of Jesus: in him was life, and that life was the light of men Elsewhere John writes it like this: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life. (1 John 5:11-12) If you know Jesus, have a relationship with Jesus you will have life. If you do not, you will not.
Page 8 John says in essence: If you believe in him, you will not perish, you will not be condemned. But if you do not believe in him, you will perish and you will be condemned. (John 3) Jesus said of himself: I have come that you might have life Satan wants to steal from you, kill you and destroy you I want to give you life in all its fullness. What is our response? 1) Do not let your hearts be troubled 2) Put your trust in Jesus place your hand in his. He is the way to God, the truth and the life.. Everything you need is found in him
Page 9 Community group questions and discussion points: 1. We are all of us looking for God. Jesus described his Father as his ultimate destination. Augustine said: Thou hast made us for thyself, O Lord, and our heart is restless until it finds its rest in thee. In what ways do you think we look for rest in other ways than in God? 2. How do you think we can then find our rest in God? How can we stop being restless? 3. Jesus said of himself that he is the way to the Father. In what ways is Jesus is the way to God? How can we relate to God through Jesus? 4. Jesus said that he was the truth. What do you think this means? Paul told the Colossians that all the wisdom and knowledge of God is found in Christ! How can we access that? 5. Read John 10:10. Jesus wants to give you fullness of life! Satan wants to steal from you, kill you and destroy you. Again, how do we access this fullness of life in and through Jesus? 6. Jesus tells his followers to not let their hearts be troubled, and to put their trust in him. How can we do these things? How can we move on from troubled hearts? How can we place our trust in Jesus. 7. As a group discuss your greatest hopes and also your fears and anxieties for Turn these over to God in prayer place your trust in him and in his care.
