Between 2000 and 2009 Of those who left the Church 71% said they Just gradually drifted away. 65% said they Stopped believing the religion s teachings. 27% cited the sex abuse scandal as their reason for leaving. Of those who identify themselves as Catholics who are 65 and older 45% are attending Mass on a regular basis. How are people encountering Christ today? The work ahead of us is urgent and the moment is now. The moment has come to commit all of the Church s energies to a new evangelization no believer in Christ, no institution of the Church can avoid this supreme duty: to proclaim Christ to all peoples. Blessed Pope John Paul II in Remptoris Missio Source: Sherry Weddell s Forming Intentional Disciples
In 2012, St. Paul Street Evangelization (SPSE) was established precisely to respond to that call through a simple and non-confrontational approach to public evangelization of the Catholic Faith. Since its inception in 2012, SPSE has spread to nearly 100 locations in 3 countries and has been featured in or on the EWTN s Life on the Rock, EWTN Radio Network, Catholic Answers Live, Catholic Connection, Radio Maria, the Catholic Channel on Sirius Satellite Radio, Archangel Radio, LifeSiteNews, the Michigan Catholic, and more. Establishing your own local team is a simple process but one that your need to carefully discern. Our national office will assist you through every step. Local Team Contact Person: Adam Janke, Program Director St. Paul Street Evangelization adam@streetevangelization.com
Men of Athens, I perceive that in every way you are very religious What therefore you worship as unknown, this I proclaim to you. The God who made the world and everything in it, being the Lord of heaven and earth, does not live in shrines made by man he himself gives to all men life and breath and everything In him we live and move and have our being. St. Paul preaches to the Athenians (Acts 17:22-28) St. Paul Street Evangelization (SPSE) is a grassroots, non-profit organization, dedicated to responding to the mandate of Jesus to preach the Gospel to all nations by taking the Catholic Faith to the streets. Christ s call to evangelize was made to every Catholic Christian, and the Second Vatican Council reiterated this need, urging each of the baptized to bring the Gospel, found fully in the Catholic Church, to a culture that has largely reverted to paganism. As an on-the-street Catholic evangelization organization, St. Paul Street Evangelization provides an avenue for people to share the Person of Jesus Christ and the truth and beauty of the Catholic Faith with a hungry culture. Founded in May 2012, St. Paul Street Evangelization provides the tools and resources for Catholics to engage the culture in a simple, non-confrontational method of evangelization which involves making themselves available to the public to answer questions about the faith and to pray with those who request it. SPSE has had tremendous growth and now has teams throughout the United States and even internationally, such as in the Philippines and Australia. But a person might ask, How can lay people evangelize the Catholic faith so publicly? Isn t that the job of priests and bishops? The Catechism of the Catholic Church states, Lay people also fulfill their prophetic mission by evangelization, that is, the proclamation of Christ by word and the testimony of life. For lay people, this evangelization acquires a specific property and peculiar efficacy because it is accomplished in the ordinary circumstances of the world (CCC 905). As a lay organization, St. Paul Street Evangelization works in fidelity and obedience to the Catholic Church and her Magisterium.
Praise for St. Paul Street Evangelization Most Reverand Allen H. Vigneron, Archbishop of Detroit: One of the new methods [of evangelization] I would like to recommend is the work of St. Paul Street Evangelization I, having personally participated in their work of street evangelization, enthusiastically endorse this group I encourage you to join me in offering your prayers and support for this organization. The Most Reverend Earl A Boyea, Bishop of Lansing: It is always good to acclaim the zeal and energy and faith of those who wish to proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ. We are all responsible for announcing that Gospel. One group which is doing this work quite forthrightly in the world is the St. Paul Street Evangelization. Most Reverend Thomas J. Rodi, Archbishop of Mobile, AL: I am happy to provide you with this letter of commendation for St. Paul Street Evangelization In this Year of Faith, and having been called to foster the New Evangelization, it is my hope that your organization will bring many to the love of Jesus Christ and His Church. Steve Ray: Street evangelism is as old as the gospel itself. The Apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ were the first street preachers announcing the good news of salvation and the Church in the streets of the Roman Empire. This tradition was practiced by the great saints throughout history and is alive again with and spreading across the globe. The faithful Catholics who make up St. Paul Street Evangelism live up to their name. Support them, follow them, join them! Gary Michuta: Ideas often become abstractions. They can easily be mischaracterized, misunderstood, misrepresented, and even become the focus of anger and bigotry. If the world s only experience of Catholicism is that of an idea, it too will become an object easily twisted, lampooned, and dismissed. St. Paul Street Evangelization breaks through this virtual cocoon of misleading videos, blogs, and discussion groups by presenting and defending the Catholic Faith with real, living, holy, intelligent, good-humored, and well-equipped Catholics who are prepared to enter into the public arena as an outreach and a witness to the truth of Christ and His Church. People can easily dismiss an idea, but it is much more difficult to dismiss a person who embodies that idea. For this reason, St. Paul Street Evangelization is needed now more than ever. It breaks through the toxic mischaracterizations dished out by the major media and internet and presents to the public an authentic personal witness to the truth, sanity, holiness, and love of the Catholic Faith.
St. Paul Street Evangelization Mission: St. Paul Street Evangelization is a grassroots, non-profit organization, dedicated to responding to the mandate of Jesus to preach the Gospel to all nations by taking the Catholic Faith to the streets in a non-confrontational way, allowing the Holy Spirit to move in the hearts of those who witness our public Catholic presence. Vision: St. Paul Street Evangelization seeks to work with God for the conversion of the entire world to Jesus Christ and His Church by providing the tools, resources, training, and inspiration to local groups of Catholics which will enable them to duplicate our non-confrontational method of Catholic evangelization in their parishes and home towns. Values: St. Paul Street Evangelization is committed to bringing about the conversion of our culture by presenting the truth of the Catholic Faith and is faithful to the teachings of the Roman Catholic Church as defined in the Catechism of the Catholic Church and by the Magisterium. Patrons: The patrons of SPSE are St. Paul, Apostle to the Gentiles, and Servant of God, Fr. John Anthony Hardon, S.J. St. Paul Street Evangelization is consecrated to the Blessed Virgin Mary under the title of Our Lady of Guadalupe, Patroness of the Americas.
How Does It Work? 1. A team of at least two Catholic evangelists choose a place in their city or town with a moderate to high level of pedestrian traffic. Examples of suitable locations include an open-air market, such as an art fair or farmers market; a bus-stop or subway station platform; a public park. 2. The evangelists set up shop with a sandwich-board sign and a collection of materials: assorted pamphlets on aspects of Catholicism, holy cards, Rosaries, Miraculous Medals, etc. A small table or blanket is often useful for displaying the materials and drawing the attention of passersby, but it is not essential. 3. The evangelists then say a prayer, invoking the Holy Spirit to guide their efforts for that day, asking to be courageous, humble, and docile to His promptings. They ask through Our Lady s intercession for the Lord to send them the people He desires them to encounter, and they pray that all may be done for the greater glory of God. 4. At this point, the evangelists simply wait for passersby to draw near and offer them free Rosaries. When someone stops to take a Rosary, the evangelizers also provide a pamphlet on how to pray the Rosary and attempt to further engage the person. 5. Keep in mind that the evangelists are there to be a public witness to the Catholic Church and to be obedient to the Holy Spirit. They should be charitable, good listeners, willing to pray with people, humble. They are not to be argumentative or combative, but should certainly defend and explain the truths of the Catholic faith and challenge their listeners in a spirit of sincerity and compassion. They should remember that Christ said that those who are persecuted for His sake are blessed and should not let a conversation they perceive as a failure get them down. God works in all situations.
Starting A Team & the Discernment Process Thank you for your interest in St. Paul Street Evangelization! We are excited to have you as a member of our team. Starting a team of your own is simple, and we will support you at the national level in many different ways. To get started with a team of your own: Visit our website and familiarize yourself with the apostolate. Our website is Teams are organized on diocesan, parish, university, organizational, and local levels. In other words, local chapters are not dependent on a parish to operate. As a baptized Catholic you do not have to organize a team through your parish, though you may choose to do so. You can lead a team yourself and we provide everything you need to do so. Become a Supporting Member: We ask for a recommended pledge of $15/month to become a St. Paul Street Evangelization Supporting Member, which includes training, team website, pamphlets, and all of our many resources, will go to help fund the national organization. If you cannot afford this amount, you can select a lower level of giving that fits your budget. This is the only charge/membership fee that the national organization suggests. We do not charge teams any fee. You will sign up to be a supporting member at the same time you register for training discussed below. Take Certification Training: A series of online training courses with monthly updates is provided for evangelists at our website that help form them in sharing the faith with others on the street. Team leaders must take this training with monthly updates. Don t worry, you will have plenty of time to complete the training course. When you sign up for training and become a supporting member, you will receive access to our Members Area, which will give you access to all of our team resources. Sign up for training here:
Join our Facebook Leader Group: (OPTIONAL but highly recommended) Join our leader group on Facebook by adding our National Director, Steve Dawson, as a friend and sending him a message at this account asking for access to the group: Steve will add you to the private group when he has received this message (do not pay the $1 that Facebook will ask you to pay to have the message go to his inbox). Get Your Sign and Rosaries. We will provide each team with a sign and rosaries for a suggested donation to help us pay for costs and shipping expenses (We only ship within the continental United States). If you live outside of the US, or you would like to supply your own sign or Rosaries, feel free to do so. If you are going to purchase or build your own sign, design templates and advice can be found in our Members Area. To order your sign or Rosaries, visit our store in our Members Area. Tracts & Literature. Our teams have access to 25 free pamphlets provided via PDF file. These can printed on your home computer or at your church for no charge. This will save tremendously on costs. Alternatively, you may get your pamphlets from us, or from another publisher, as you see fit. If you choose to use your own from another publisher, a literature file is the Members Area. Other Items 1. A Bible and the Catechism of the Catholic Church. Keep a Bible & Catechism with you. Read them daily! 2. Business cards (recommended): Templates provided in Members Area. 3. Folding Table/Picnic Blanket and lawn chair. Optional, helpful in some areas depending on where you set up. 4. PSAs: If you have a local Catholic Radio Station, send them these public service announcements to play on the station. Announcements, posters, bulletin inserts, and more are available in the members area. You want to work to recruit disciples to evangelize with you. 5. Website: Each local team will be provided with a free website at the link below that you can edit as you see fit. See our current local websites: Location, location, location. Once you have your materials it is time to pick a location where lots of people will walk by you. Consider parish festivals, craft shows, city festivals, downtown areas, college campuses and more. See our handout on your first amendment rights. On the Street Step By Step: 1. Begin in prayer with your group. We start each day by praying the rosary or at least a prayer to the Holy Spirit. 2. When people stop by ask them if they would like a free rosary. Hold the rosaries in your hands near the crucifix so that is the first thing they see.
3. For everyone who slows down and looks at our setup, we tell them everything is free and we offer them a free rosary, always with a pamphlet on how to pray it. 4. We then start conversation by asking them if they know the rosary is a prayer and if they are Catholic. Always give them our SPSE tract on how to pray the rosary. All conversation starts from this one simple question. If they are Catholic, we find out if they are practicing (weekly Mass). If so try to encourage frequent confession (once a month) etc. Talk about sin. Strengthen the faith in them. A million techniques could be done here. 5. If they are fallen away Catholics, we try to bring them back and tell them about confession. 6. If they are non-catholics, we ask them if they ever considered becoming Catholic. We plant seeds and allow the Holy Spirit to use us to evangelize them into the faith. After reading through this and praying about it, make a decision as to whether you feel God may be calling you to start a team or not. If you decide to start this apostolate in your area, sign up for the training, become a Supporting Member, and let us know of your intent by and we will create for you a website. After you sign up for the training, please respond with the contact name and address you want to be posted on your website and we will provide you with web admin instructions. Contact us if you have any questions. Please keep us informed of your progress. ST. PAUL STREET [EVANGELIZATION]
Non-Confrontational Evangelization While using this non-confrontational method of evangelization can be very effective at strengthening the faith of practicing Catholics, bringing back into the Faith fallen away Catholics, and converting to the Faith non- Catholics, we recognize that it is our job to plant seeds, and in the end, it is up to God to make those seeds grow. We provide everything a team needs to be successful.
Team Development and Coordination Assistance. Online Evangelist Training and Certification including two full courses and monthly training modules. Materials for Local Teams SPSE provides signs, Rosaries, CDs, business card templates, and other materials to local teams for a minimal suggested donation that covers costs and shipping expenses. Free professionally produced printable pamphlets. Every team receives a local website. Media such as press releases, PSAs, TV interviews, and other related resources. Evangelization and Catechetical Blog. Prayer Support. We have a group of nearly 1,000 people praying for your team. Apologetics Support. Parish and Diocesan Support. Live training opportunities & conference speakers, including single talk, one day, and three day formats.
To evangelize, then, we must be open to the action of the Spirit of God, without fear of what He asks us or where He leads us. Let us entrust ourselves to Him! He enables us to live and bear witness to our faith, and enlighten the hearts of those we meet. How beautiful it is to see that young people are street preachers joyfully bringing Jesus to every street, every town square and every corner of the earth! Pope Francis
