3 Welcome to the March Timsbury Letter Features this Month A Fond Farewell to Eric Brimble Page 4 Seven Stars to Celebrate First Anniversary!- Page 17 St Mary s School to Host a Science Fair!- Page 13 Fitness, Health and Wellbeing in Timsbury Page 18 Village News Get Active in Timsbury become a Parish Councillor The Parish Council is your community council and you can have a say and support initiatives in a way that makes a difference. Currently, 12 residents volunteer and new Councillors are welcome to take up this opportunity from April. The PC is a legal body which has been going since 1894(!) and raises its 70,000+ annual funds mainly a from a Precept which is added to your Council Tax. It has monthly meetings and is not connected to a church. So, if you want to contribute your ideas in your community see timsbury.org.uk/parishcouncil and contact the Chairman on Allotments Available There are a few plots available to rent for only 15/year. Anyone who wants to grow their own fresh vegetables and fruit on this friendly well organised site off Lippiatt Lane should contact the Allotments Committee Secretary Sandra Heward sandra.heward@btinternet.com. 3

4 Buses and Transport to Timsbury The Parish Council is appealing for a new long-term approach to providing buses and transport for the village. This is in response to B&NES consultation to cut their subsidy of the 768 and late 179 services. Withdrawal of support will make things worse, but retaining it will not provide a decent answer to the problems. This is causing dependence on cars resulting in more traffic into towns. Elderly and vulnerable residents can be isolated, and workers find it difficult to get in and out of this large village. The Parish Council suggests that B&NES Council and the new West of England Combined Authority (the Metro Mayor) should consider a long-term commitment to reliable integrated rural transport services through: A wider range of travel options such as shared taxi systems, community transport and car share schemes, all linked up. Using new powers in the Bus Act 2017 to provide what communities need, not the bus companies. Improved timetables and better publicity for bus and other services. The Parish Council already donates to some community transport and Dial-A-Ride services in the village Centenary Commemorations This 11 th November is the centenary of the end of the First World War and the village is planning to mark this with a range of activities and hopefully some improvements to the memorial in Lippiatt Lane. Anyone who would like to offer help or ideas for activities working with the Parish Council and the Royal British Legion please get in touch with Chris Gittins below. See more from the Legion on page 27. 6 Eric Brimble We were saddened recently to learn of the death of Eric Brimble, one of our most distinguished and very long serving Parish Clerks. Eric held this position for 35 years, from , a time of significant change and development in both the village and the work of the Parish Council. Eric s minutes of all Parish Council meetings now form part of an important archive kept in the local Record Office. For many years these were hand written to be read aloud for approval at the start of each subsequent meeting. During the 1970s they began to be typed and distributed to all Parish Councillors. At this time, in addition to a typewriter the Parish Clerk also acquired a telephone, both signs of a move into another, more recognisably modern age. The decision to issue The Timsbury Letter created another monthly job for the Parish Clerk, that of typing and reproducing the magazine on a Gestetner machine ready for delivery around the village. Eric was very involved in establishing the Allotment Field in the mid 1970s. I remember seeing him in his muddy Wellington boots busy measuring and marking out the plots. He also knew and walked the many footpaths in the parish and regularly reported those that required attention. We remember with much respect a man who quietly worked so hard for the village he knew and served so well and we send our condolences to Freda and the family. 11 Minister s Letter By Martin Blewitt Easter Sunday is a Movable Feast. (A term I was disappointed to discover, when younger, that did not refer to a church picnic.) As we know, Easter can vary in the year by almost a month from the end of March to almost the end of April, a variation that has long frustrated educationalists trying to accommodate school terms with religious holidays, hoteliers depending on good weather over the Easter break for good profits and confectioners having to plan the production and supply of chocolate to changing annual deadlines. Be prepared for a crash-course in ancient history, astronomy and complex mathematics: The events of Jesus death and resurrection occurred around the Jewish festival of Passover, and so since the earliest years of the Church, the Christian Easter has been regulated by the date of Passover, with the difference that Christian s celebrate on the Sunday, the first day of the week as opposed to Shabbat, the seventh day of the week. The date of Easter is calculated (to simplify a complicated formula) by being the first Sunday after the first full moon after the Spring Equinox (21 st /22 nd March). So it follows that Easter Day can fall anywhere in a 28 day lunar cycle. Only it s not quite that simple: to be precise you need to use a rather complex algorithm! In order to simplify and rationalise the calendar and our year planning, the churches are considering whether the time has come to designate the celebration of Easter on a fixed date each year. A position that traditionalists will no doubt be staunchly against, whilst others will argue that it is a long overdue change! Whatever the uncertainties about the date, the where and the when, Christians from the earliest days were convinced and of one mind about the what, and that was that Jesus who had died was now alive again. He who had died had conquered death, and this is the central belief of all Christians in all churches in all centuries Christ is risen: He is risen indeed So whatever our feelings about the when of Easter, may I wish you a real sense of the what: May you have a very happy Easter. (This year, 1 st April, if you were wondering.) 11

16 Timsbury Theatre Group by Peter Buchanan The Group is following up last year s successful comedy whodunit Agatha Crusty and the Village Hall Murders with another murderthemed play. This one is an Intriguing thriller Curtain Up on Murder by Bettine Manktelow. An amateur dramatic company are rehearsing in their theatre at the end of a pier. But, as in all thrillers, the best laid plans of mice and men have a habit of going horribly wrong sometimes with fatal consequences. With a classic thriller set-up a group of people trapped, underlying tensions within the group, the obligatory storm and no means of communicating with the outside world the sequence of unexpected and unexplained deaths will keep the audience on the edge of their seats right up to the end. As the drama unfolds, secrets are revealed and tensions magnified as the players are forced to spend the night together in what appears to be a haunted theatre, with a murderer in their midst! The cast is led by George Clark and Paige -Alex Lee-Edmunds, with Peter Buchanan, Ian Clark, Jo Jewell, Suzanne Morys, Emily Webber and Sharon Wilkins taking the other parts. Curtain Up on Murder will be on stage at the Conygre Hall on Friday 23 rd and Saturday 24 th March and at the Mission Theatre, Bath on Tuesday 27 th and Wednesday 28 th March. All performances start at 7.30pm. Tickets are priced at 10 (reserved seats in Timsbury, unreserved in Bath). Call or text or visit to book. The Group will be making use of some new lighting equipment for this production. The Group and the Conygre Trust have jointly invested in a set of LED floodlights, which can be remotely controlled to produce a wide range of colours and will of course use considerably less electricity than the conventional fittings they replace. We meet every Tuesday at the Conygre Hall from 7.45pm. We are very keen to welcome new members to appear in productions or help with the vital backstage jobs such as stage management, costume, lighting and sound. If you're interested in joining us, come along on a Tuesday evening or call Pete Crooke (434479) or Peter Buchanan (471818). 16

19 The Seven Stars Dry January? No thanks! By Rich Sturgess We lost ten of our favourite drinkers to this Dry January initiative. Dammit! And they were welcomed back with open arms when 1 st February arrived with one of them falling off the wagon on the 19 th Jan better luck next time, mate! The 6-Nations has also kicked off now and we re showing every game on TV in our pool room. It was very busy for the first England game not so much for Wales. This last month has flown by and we saw our very own Luke performing his amazing mix of world music and rhythms to a packed pub, and even got a few locals up to join in on percussion and keyboards well done, Rob and try a bit harder next time Christian! Two of the firm staples of the pub are the petanque pistes at the end of the garden and we have about 40 locals in the local league who play three evenings a week throughout the summer. A few are a bit raucous but I put it down to their age the most mischievous is about 80 and enjoys a few real ales on every trip! And to celebrate last year s season they are having a rather large bash at the pub in March we ve ordered extra gin so don t worry! March 17 th this year is a very special day for the pub and not just because it is St Patrick s Day or the final day of the 6-Nations, but it will be the 12 month anniversary of me opening the pub can you believe it is a year since the whole village descended on the Seven for some well deserved drinks after a 7 week refit?! The whole team will be here that day and I ll try and get Abbie back to see some of you locals, but Corinna can t get a flight back from Thailand that day unfortunately! Are you coming? We d love to see you! 19

27 Timsbury Natural History Society by Rod Bruce When you are reading this, our Field Trip to Slimbridge will be over. We will have seen the Over- Wintering Wildfowl in the Estuary and the WWT Ponds for the permanent Residents, having taken advantage of the Hides and the Paved Footways, a welcome feature after some of the sites we visit and the ability to wear walking boots instead of wellies. In reality I am writing this prior to the visit to meet publishing deadlines. A full List of our sightings will be, as usual, displayed in the Log Book we maintain and which can be perused at the Monthly Meeting in the Conygre Hall. Our speakers will be Stewart Rowden and Kiri Green. New Speakers as far as we are concerned but practised ones from other Natural History Groups. Their subject will be Bats. It's years since we last heard about bats when our talk was by Bob Howard a much loved former Chairman and vet who had a Bat Roost in the Attic of his Keynsham Home and who wrote a book on the subject. Bob passed away several years ago. Martin Hunt, another dedicated servant of the group, will also be missed. We said our final good-byes to Martin at Heycombe on January 25 th where a full Chapel reflected how much he was loved and admired. It was fitting that during the Service a Heron passed across the Picture Window, of all that Martin loved about nature Birds were his favourite. As we entered the Chapel a recording of Birdsong played instead of the usual entry music. Some say that Birdsong is Music to the ears anyway. At the February Meeting we will have been enlightened regarding Buzzards. Robin Prytherch will have updated our knowledge of these predators which are more prevalent than previously. Our March Field Trip will be to RSPB Swell to see the Heronry, who's inhabitants should be well into their nesting occupations. Hopefully on the way home we will see a repeat of our last time when we had a good sighting of the Cranes We will meet in the Car park at on Saturday 24 th, neatly avoiding the bank Holiday weekend. See you there? 27

29 Soldiers Celebrating News of Armistice The 4 August 2014 marks the 100th anniversary of the day Britain entered one of the costliest conflicts in history the First World War, which ended on the 11 November 1918, Armistice Day. Nearly everyone in the UK has an ancestor directly affected by the First World War, and all of us live with its effects today. The losses were felt in nearly every UK town and village, as more than 1.1 million lives were sacrificed by men and women in service of the British Empire. The Royal British Legion was founded by British veterans in the aftermath of the First World War, and will be at the forefront of Centenary commemorations. As we come together in Remembrance of events a century ago, we are reminded of the important welfare work the Legion continues to provide today, and will need to provide in the future. A century on from the First World War, those serving in the Armed Forces, veterans, and their families still call on us for help with almost every aspect of daily life. The problems facing First World War veterans when they returned to the UK continue to affect serving personnel and veterans today: whether living with bereavement or disability, finding employment, or coping with financial stress. As the UK s Custodian of Remembrance, the Legion will be leading the nation in respecting the sacrifices of the First World War. As the UK s largest Armed Forces charity, the Legion will be leading the nation in providing direct care and support to Armed Forces and veteran families in need. Help us to catch the torch from the First World War fallen to hold it high today. Visit to participate, donate, or shop. Thank you. 29

In Aid of Timsbury Pre School In Aid of Children s Hospice South West Dear Editor, Anyone following the recycling vehicle each week will see the trail of litter and devastation left behind by the crews. When emptied the bins are thrown in any nearby garden leaving residents to sort their bins from their neighbours. I appreciate the crew numbers seem to have been cut back considerably recently putting the crews under more pressure but I don't think that entitles them to rudeness. Nor does it mean we should have to endure littered streets and litter blowing around the countryside, which is dangerous for both wildlife and farm animals. Yours sincerely, Sheila Moss. This reminder is helpful as litter from recycling has gone up. Residents and the Parish Council's litter picker Les Robbins have to pick it up. Any comments should be addressed to B&NES via or 'report it' on their site. Parish Clerk. 33
