The News - March 2016 Page 1 Pastoral Message from Revd Dr Nick Brindley Dear friends The Annual General Meeting of Potters Bar URC takes place in March and I m looking forward to it with more than usual anticipation this year. The election of elders and church officers promises to be a real blessing as we hope to see some people who have not previously served as elders joining our team and to welcome a new church secretary following Anne Walton s having to step down as she moves to Milton Keynes. This new leadership team will, I hope, start work with a clear mandate from the church to begin to take concrete steps to act in accordance with the vision for a new phase in the life and mission of our fellowship. I have written elsewhere in this issue about how we have come to the vision we are asking the congregation to share. I have been greatly blessed in the three and a half years of my ministry here to date by the rich mix of experience and gifts of the elders and other lay leaders and officers at Potters Bar. They have encouraged, challenged and supported me and I have learned hugely from them. In this message I would particularly like to mention a few individuals. Anne Walton, as she lays down the burden of the role of secretary, is moving on to concentrate more on her developing gift as a leader of worship. We will shortly be celebrating in our worship her commissioning as a General Assembly Accredited Lay Preacher. I have not often had the chance to participate in services lead by her but I have greatly appreciated her input to Bible studies and know that her services have been much appreciated both by our congregation and by Brookmans Park. I would also like to express my appreciation of the work done by David and Pauline Morris as Building Manager and Lettings Secretary. The efficiency and reliability they have brought to their roles have freed others from worry about these vital areas of the life of our congregation. As they pass them over to others we are getting an even greater sense of all that they have been doing for so long. Thanks to them both on behalf of us all and thanks too for the effort they are putting in to make the transition smooth and painless. I am offering fervent prayers that they will be refreshed and revived to continue to serve God among us, whether in Tuesday Friendship, the eldership, Darkes Fayre or any of the other aspects of our church life to which they contribute. Thanks David and Pauline! I truly believe that over the next year we will be embarking as a fellowship on a very fruitful new chapter in our common life of witness and service. I hope as many of you as possible will take part in the discussions leading up to and including the AGM. Speak to me or to any of the elders about what we are proposing and do come along to the meeting to make your voice heard. With all blessings Nick

Page 2 The News - March 2016 Mothering Sunday - 4th Sunday in Lent There is an old Jewish saying: God could not be everywhere, and therefore He made mothers. Mother Church, Mother Earth, Mother of the Gods - our human mothers - all of them have been part of the celebration of Mothering Sunday - as the fourth Sunday in Lent is affectionately known. It has been celebrated in the UK since at least the 16th century. In Roman times, great festivals were held every Spring to honour Cybele, Mother of all the Gods. Other pagan festivals in honour of Mother Earth were also celebrated. With the arrival of Christianity, the festival became one honouring Mother Church. During the Middle Ages, young people apprenticed to craftsmen or working as live-in servants were allowed only one holiday a year on which to visit their families - which is how Mothering Sunday got its name. This special day became a day of family rejoicing, and the Lenten fast was broken. In some places the day was called Simnel Day, because of the sweet cakes called simnel cakes traditionally eaten on that day. In recent years the holiday has changed and in many ways now resembles the American Mothers Day, with families going out to Sunday lunch and generally making a fuss of their mother on the day. 5 Page 4 The News - March 2016 St Joseph the Carpenter of Nazareth gracious descendant of King David Many people know that Joseph was the father of probably the most famous man who ever lived, but beyond that we know very little about him. The Gospels name him as the father of Jesus, while also asserting that the child was born of a virgin. Even if he wasn t what we call the biological father, it was important to them that he was a distant descendant of the great king David - a necessary qualification for the messiah. It s obvious that Joseph (usually described as a carpenter ) was poor, because he was allowed to offer the poor man s sacrifice of two pigeons or turtle doves at the presentation of his infant son. No one expected eloquence or wisdom from this man s son. Jesus was born into a poor family, with a doubtless hard-working artisan as his father. There would have been few luxuries in that little home at Nazareth. Matthew begins his birth narrative with the bald statement that Mary was engaged to Joseph, but before they lived together she became pregnant with child from the Holy Spirit. Joseph was not apparently privy to the divine intervention in her life, and drew the obvious conclusion: it was another man s child. However, he was not the sort of man who wished to disgrace her publicly, so he resolved to dismiss her quietly - end their engagement without fuss, we might say. However, at that point Joseph had a dream in which he was told by an angel of the Lord not to hesitate to take Mary as his wife, because the child conceived in her was from the Holy Spirit, and that the baby was to be named Jesus ( saviour ) because he will save his people from their sins. On waking, Joseph did as he had been instructed and took Mary as his wife. So far as Joseph himself is concerned we can be pretty sure of a few things. In human legal terms he was the father of Jesus, he was a carpenter and he had probably died before Jesus began his public ministry. The little we are told suggests a devout, decent and sensitive man, one who shared Mary s anxiety when the twelve year old Jesus went missing in Jerusalem and who presumably taught his son the trade of a carpenter. Joseph has become an icon of the working man - there are many churches nowadays dedicated to Joseph the Worker. He can stand in the calendar of saints for the ordinary person, a straightforward craftsman who never expected or chose to be in the spotlight of history. He did what he could, and he was obedient to everything that he believed God required of him. To do the ordinary thing well, to be kind, caring and open to guidance: these are great gifts, and Joseph seems to have had them in abundance. David Winter - Parish Pump Is it any wonder, When the sun shines in the sky, That blackbirds sing and young Lambs bleat and fluffy clouds float by. Is it any wonder, When new born babies smile, We revel in the miracle Ne er failing to beguile. Is it any wonder, When stars shine from afar, That peace descends and draws A veil on nature s repertoire. Is it any wonder, That as through life we plod, We marvel at the splendour Of such gifts bestowed by God.

The News - March 2016 Page 5 Tuesday Friendship The first Tuesday meeting of February was billed as an evening talk about football, a dull subject that was bound to send me to sleep without any difficulty at all. It proved to be nothing like that at all. Our speaker was Meryl Court, an ordained minister, whose husband was an Arsenal player and although no longer playing - having hung up his boots at 29 - well known from earlier days. From the moment that she started the talk she was a charming, captivating speaker and we all thoroughly enjoyed the evening.. David Court wanted to play football from his earliest years, his school years centred around the sport and his ambition was to play the game as a career. Play he did, was accepted by the Arsenal football club, and joined the Club at its Highbury ground. David played for the first team - mostly mid field, but also played in every position except goal, a truly utility player. Sometimes he played supporting the lower and rising team members in the second eleven or training the up and coming colts. Meryl told us how she met him at a cricket match, they fell in love, married, and had four children. Bill Shankly is a well known and respected player and trainer of Liverpool football club, and mostly remembered now for his quick quips and quotes. Meryl started the talk with one such, and probably most well known one :- some people believe football is a matter of life and death, I am very disappointed with that attitude. I can assure you that it is much, much more important than that. This is how football impinged upon her life. Meryl charmed us all through the evening with tales of the game, and of the personalities that she met through David s total commitment to the game and the life of Arsenal football Club. Married life was marriage to a club; friends were largely football friends particularly their similarly distressed wives. We saw a picture, taken by the a news paper, not of the Cup winning team but of the wives of that team suitably arranged -as the more important team. Married life proved to be a two part affair, the playing season and the closed season. In the former he was not there in the latter he was there but too tired to go in holiday with her because he had travelled so much in season. Money in those days was tight, players were not paid as they are today and the teams bonus game was eagerly awaited and bought their first washing machine. When the team moved from the Highbury ground, with its history, to the Emirates premises the game seemed to change. Fans attitude toward the game changed, and the players too were dramatically better paid. Change brought money into the game and it became the driving force. With that came the abusive rivalry of fans along with self- important players and other ills. Meryl contrasted this with what she remembers and treasures, the camaraderie, the commitment to the game and the loyalty to your teams members. There was much else too in her lovely talk, the above will have to suffice, and our memories of a lovely lady, her commitment to her family in a complicated two part life and their love for each other which this week had reached 50 years. Geoffrey Peterson Every year millions of people lose money through scam (tricks). We are all potential targets for the criminals who might try to scam us. On 16th February, Mr Richard Hurst, a Herts. Trading Standards Officer, came to enlighten us about how to protect ourselves and fight back against these scammers. Victims can be contacted by mail, doorstep callers, telephone and . Many of us had already experienced these scams, especially telephone calls. Mail scams often concern lottery or prize draw wins which, to claim, you have to send money. Richard advised never to send money or have any further contact. Too good to be true? It probably is! Catalogues with many tempting items for sale may be sent, also letters from clairvoyants or inheritance information. Sometimes victims are asked for date of birth and mother s maiden name. Never give out these personal details as a false identity can be set up by a scammer. We must be wary of an unexpected doorstep caller who can ask you for money in advance to do a job or who are trying to sell you household goods. We saw a short film of instances where jobs had been left half done or worse - roofs, drives, etc. It is best to employ recommended workmen and Trading Standards have lists of reliable workers. If you are tricked the scammers will sell your details to others. There are 120 No Cold Callers Zones in the county. We saw the story of Jessica on a short video who was repeatedly tricked into sending money to criminals over five years and her family tried unsuccessfully to convince her she was being scammed. Banks or Police never ask for pin numbers or send couriers for bank Cont d on page 7

Page 6 The News - March 2016 A Vision for Mission Some of us have been meeting, praying and thinking together to try to hear God s will for our church. The vision group consisted of four of the elders, Tony Corfe, Janet Green, Janet O Connor and Frank Palmer, joined by Pam Brindley, Michael Deller, and Geoff Peterson, along with me as the minister. We met both for prayer and for discussion and then our conclusions were brought to the full elders meeting which further refined and developed them. We have come to believe that this has been clearly expressed to us and that it is for us to express our faith in service to Him by enhancing our common life and witness. We think we are being called to three areas of effort: enrichment of our spiritual life nurture of the elderly spiritual care of young families Spiritual life Sunday mornings are and will remain the centre of our life as a community of Christian believers. In this service we bring humanity s praise and prayer to God and receive his word and his blessing. We feel that as part of our attempt to align to God s will we are called to make some small adjustments to our worship to enable our communication with Him to be richer and deeper while retaining its basic shape and character. These changes will not be radical nor will they take place too quickly. Rather we want to take small steps that will make this service better, which is to say more God-filled. Nurture of the elderly Most of our current fellowship are beyond retirement age and have many years of service in the Church behind them. Many of our activities attract and serve others who are of similar ages to this congregational core. We are sure that in serving this group we are doing something God wants us to do. We are therefore certain that in nurturing these activities (Tuesday Friendship, Charity Lunches, our social events like the Church Dinner) we are serving the Kingdom. We propose, therefore, that the elders be urged to make this a priority in planning our mission over the next period. In particular we want to give real attention to further deepening our relationships with our new neighbours at Mandeville Court and to building on the wonderful fellowship offered by our Tuesday Friendship group. Spiritual care of young families Our congregation already has much to be proud of in its nurture of young children and their families. Our Nursery is (officially!) outstanding and holds three services a year along with charitable and other fund-raising events. It is to a great and increasing extent the focus of a real community. Our Toddler Group is also highly successful and is a great opportunity for parents and carers to meet and share. There are increasingly close links between the two and a great commitment to many of those who benefit from them to contribute to their success, with volunteers helping out in the nursery and with the many fund-raising events the parents organise. In addition we have been impressed by the response to appeals for charitable and other activities, with the Harvest service in particular attracting a fantastic range of gifts and our Mary s Meals picnic being well supported. We believe God is now calling us to extend this nurture by enhancing its spiritual dimension and giving those we serve more chances to encounter God in Christ. We would like to employ someone to work alongside our current employees with a specific remit to build on our current service by offering opportunities for prayer and worship and to provide a range of support to our families that will enhance their lives by helping them know Jesus better. 8 The News - March 2016 Page 7 Continued from page 6 What might happen next? Adjustments to Sunday mornings are likely to be the first observable change. We are thinking about altering the physical layout of the seating and perhaps increasing the continuity across the Sundays, giving us the chance to go deeper into faith by carrying themes over from week to week. We would also like to make prayer more central and more responsive to the needs of those who attend our services. Some of us are drawn to the introduction of some elements of prayer directly addressing the need for healing and will be working alongside our friends at Brookmans Park who are actively exploring this and holding a major event on ministries of healing in April. Central to our thinking about work with younger people is employment of a families worker where we will draw on the experience of our friends at St John s and at Welwyn GC URC and work closely with the Synod. Others have had great success and so will we! The elders will discuss how to develop our mission to the elderly. At the AGM in March we will be electing the elders for the coming year, as well as a new Church Secretary. We want the AGM to endorse our vision and to give the eldership a mandate to develop a plan of action based on it. The AGM will be asked to agree in principle to experiments with worship patterns; It will be asked whether care for the elderly is recognised as a mission for this church; It will be asked to accept the possibility of significant expenditure on families work We are convinced that our worship can evolve and improve without losing what we value about it. We intend to proceed slowly and carefully. We start from a good beginning and with determined leadership more can be done. Nick Tuesday Friendship (cont d...) cards. It is inadvisable to keep large sums of money in the house. Before answering the front door, lock the back door! Some paperwork can be faulty. Check you can have a 14 day notice to cancel before signing anything, this is the law. Very often it is a false name and address printed. If worried about a caller, phone call or letter, you can phone 101 or action fraud on or Citizens Advice on If you are not sure it is best to consult friends or family. In turn be watchful for others. Richard concluded his talk by answering questions and listening to experiences. There is a device which can be fixed to your phone which enables unwanted calls to be blocked, but of course you can always listen to your answerphone before lifting the receiver. Many thanks to Richard Hurst for such an interesting and helpful evening. It was very pleasing to see so many people to hear him, so it was just as well that we held it in the church. Door stickers and leaflets were available for us. Margaret Hill

Page 8 The News - March 2016 The Big Issue - or keeping our Eye on the Ball Have you noticed how relatively trivial the issues over our, the UK s, position in the European Union have become? I would have thought that the average, thinking person wants the key issues to be addressed. The issue that our Parliament, made up of our elected representatives, should be the final arbiter of our UK destiny, that our legal system should be supreme in its judgements within our United Kingdom, that the UK controls its taxation for its own purposes and that our definition of human rights (originally insisted upon by the UK in the fledgling EU structure after WW2), should be respected and not diverted into other avenues of lesser degree, to list a few. I do not even know who my Euro MP is, he or she, and they never respond to me about their work., nor ask for my views, and I am not aware of any structure of their reporting back to me on their deliberations - is this representation?. Contrast this situation with our UK members of Parliament, I know mine, correspond with him over issues that concern or irritate me, and he replies. No doubt you do, too. If we do not like what our government representative does then we have a reasonable chance to chuck them out. I wonder, has Dave s eye come off the ball? How does this relate to us and our church; has our personal and corporate eye come off the ball, too? Where is the Christian in ourselves going? We are preparing for Easter this month, and it is reasonable to address this issue in our personal in or out debate. What are our guiding principles, well here is a start. Exodus 20 (and Deuteronomy 5) is written up in many of our parish churches and displayed above or beside the altar, they are there to keep the parishioners eye on the ball. They were given to Moses long back in time, in Sinai. They have been on display in our parish churches for several hundred years so how does our nation shape up? The first four commandments define our duty to God - You shall have no other Gods before me... - ouch! the next six define our duty to our neighbour. Jesus sums them up as - Thou shalt love the Lord your God with all your heart and mind and soul and your neighbour as yourself - ouch!. One thing that really fascinates me is that Paul will have been brought up with these ten prescriptive requirements, and they will have guided his life, right up to his spectacular conversion. Then His life changed, and he followed Christ. Jesus life was not prescriptive but love filled. Easter was a loving act toward all mankind. Now just read that glorious love poem that Paul writes in his letter to the Corinthian church - 1 Corinthians chapters 13,14. How is that for the change wrought in a man after conversion? In our church life, love (and its implications) is what we, as a church, have to sell to our community, this is our Mission and our interpretation will dictate how our church grows. Somehow we have to figure out what this love is from us to our Potters Bar folk. May I leave you with another thought. I started with national negotiations and the Nation s choice of in or out. However, salvation is free, its not negotiable with God but comes through our faith and His grace, so in or out?. Listen to Paul as he writes an exhortation to Timothy to stir up the Gift of God which is within thee - ouch again! As a church let us keep our eye on the ball and remember the Big Issue as we work through Lent and together progress to the glorious Easter time. Geoffrey Peterson Snoring A clergyman consulted his doctor about his wife s snoring. It has to STOP, he insisted. The doctor was intrigued: Does it really bother you that much? Well, it s not just me, explained the minister. She is bothering the whole congregation.

The News - March 2016 Page 9 News from the Hillyards Well we arrived safely at Christchurch after 30 hours flying and before the earthquake. Set off for the west coast via Arthur's Pass to Hokitika. Had a stop and a helicopter flight over Fox Glacier (fantastic) and also did the early morning walk to Lake Matheson (mirror lake). When we arrived it was shrouded in mist but this cleared as you can see. We are now in Queenstown, but the rain has finally caught up with us. Second picture is view from our accommodation. Hope all is well with you all! View from the top of the gondola. Weather had improved by lunchtime. Holiday Complaints The roads were uneven and bumpy, so we could not read the local guide book during the bus ride to the resort. Because of this, we were unaware of many things that would have made our holiday more fun. It took us nine hours to fly home from Jamaica to England. It took the Americans only three hours to get home. This seems unfair. I compared the size of our one-bedroom suite to our friends three-bedroom and ours was significantly smaller. The brochure stated: No hairdressers at the resort. We re trainee hairdressers and we think they knew and made us wait longer for service.

Page 10 The News - March 2016 I am a Seenager. (Senior teenager) I have everything that I wanted as a teenager, only 60 years later. I don t have to go to school or work. I get an allowance every month. I have my own pad. I don t have a curfew. I have a driver s license and my own car. I have ID that gets me into bars and the whisky store. The people I hang around with are not scared of getting pregnant. And I don t have acne. Life is great Also, you will feel much more intelligent after reading this. Brains of older people are slow because they know so much. People do not decline mentally with age, it just takes them longer to recall facts because they have more information in their brains, scientists believe. Much like a computer struggles as the hard drive gets full, so too, do humans take longer to access information when their brains are full. Researchers say this slowing down process is not the same as cognitive decline. The human brain works slower in old age, said Dr. Michael Ramscar, but only because we have stored more information over time. The brains of older people do not get weak. On the contrary, they simply know more. Also, older people often go to another room to get something and when they get there, they stand there wondering what they came for. It is NOT a memory problem, it is nature s way of making older people do more exercise. Punctuation is Powerful An English professor wrote these words on the whiteboard and asked his students to punctuate it correctly a woman without her man is nothing All of the males in the class wrote: A woman, without her man, is nothing All the females in the class wrote: A woman, without her, man is nothing WALK SOFTLY Walk with God as you walk through His garden Tread light on the paths that are His, Make yur touch when you greet fellow travellers As gentle as true loves first kiss. Walk with God as you walk through tomorrow, Treat each day as if it s your last, Offer up all the strength you can summon, For the future will soon be the past. Walk with God as you walk through His Kingdom, Keep your footprints as light as you may, Treat all with respect, as He teaches, And you may fnd there s not much to pay. Walk with God as you walk through the springtime, See the beauty of earth, now re-born, But remember to leave for the future A whole kingdom not one tattered and torn! Walk with God through the heat of the summer, Feel His power in the warmth of the sun, Heading onwards to His glorious harvest, But remember, no harm must be done. Walk with God as you walk autumn s pathways, Brightly dress in reds, browns and golds, Pass on to your children the wonder Of everything His planet holds. So at last you will come to the winter; Walk with God through the silent, white night, Rest in peace in His arms, always knowing With His help, you have lived your life right. No sign of your footprints behind you Nothing broken, no debts left to pay, And because you walked soft through His garden, You ll be His on that glorious last day.
