JUNIOR CURRICULUM Bible Basics is a curriculum for Bible study for elementary age learners. Junior is the curricula for learners who will usually be in fifth and sixth grades, ages ten and eleven. It is based on the concept of discovery learning. This means the teacher is a guide who will lead the learners to discover Bible truth through individual investigation. The purpose of Junior material is to help learners develop thinking skills to discover the meaning of basic Bible principles and make an application in their daily lives. It is an exciting endeavor one Jesus used! The Junior Learner s Manual contains four perforated pages per lesson. These pages may be given to the learners as single work sheets or as an entire lesson. The first page of each lesson is the Bible story. It illustrates the Bible Principle and Lesson Objective. The Bible story may be read in the classroom interactively by the learners or by the teacher. The second, third and fourth pages of each lesson relate to classroom activity. The activities reinforce the Bible story and Bible Principle. The teacher can use the lesson guide to pace the classroom activity to fit the time frame of the local church by adapting the activities to the need. A Devotional section is included in the Junior Teacher s Guide. Understand the Lesson Objective, Focus the Bible Principle and Know God s Word sections are brief commentaries designed to help the teacher prepare for the lesson. Additional Scriptures are provided for further study. Classroom activity begins with Attention and ends with the Final Activity. The teacher should watch the time but be flexible, adjusting the time of each activity as the needs of the learners demand it. It is more important for learners to understand the Bible Principle than to fill the allotted time for the activity. The classroom objective should be for learners to understand the Bible Principle and apply it in their lives. 2

Lesson Outline The Lesson Outline is an explanation for each division included in the lesson. H Lesson Objective states the purpose for studying the lesson from the teacher s point of view. The Lesson Objective comments help clarify the objective and serve as a guideline for lesson activities. H Bible Principle is the focus of Bible truth used in the lesson. The teacher will state the Bible Principle several times throughout the lesson. This repetition will help the learners focus the truth of the Bible Principle in their minds. H Parallel Passage includes a memory verse. A memory verse aid is also given in each lesson to help learners in memorizing Scriptures. H Attention begins classroom activity. This section suggests welcoming learners and directing them to the learning center. H Prayer time is suggested to focus on prayer requests learners may have and to ask God s blessings for learners to accomplish the objective designed for the lesson. H Lesson Set is to be used immediately before the Bible story. It includes an activity designed to focus the minds of the learners to receive the Bible Principle and a brief discussion to lay a foundation on which learners may build an understanding of the Bible story. H Know God s Word section gives additional information for an in-depth study of the Bible story. The Bible Story is printed in full text in the learner s manual. Junior Learner s Manual activity pages are planned to be used immediately following the Bible story. Suggested questions are given in the Ask sections of the teacher s guide and possible answers for the questions are given in italics. H Activities section includes three sections. Learner s Manual Activities are three pages learners complete in the classroom. The Final Activity concludes the lesson and helps learners make life application. It summarizes the lesson and focuses on the truth of the Parallel Passage. During the activity the teacher can determine whether the learners have understood the Bible Principle and the Bible story. He may clarify any misconceptions learners may have made. During this time learners are encouraged to memorize the memory verse. H Life Application states the purpose for studying the lesson from the learner s point of view. The teacher may prefer to keep learners copies of the Junior Learner s Manual in the classroom rather than send them home with the learners. Only those pages may be removed which the teacher wants learners to use at home. The learner is better prepared to continue the application process in daily life after he has the Bible Principle and the Bible story planted in his mind and 3

heart. Daily Bible Readings are included in each lesson. The ABC s of salvation are provided in each lesson for the teacher to present the plan of salvation to the learners. Materials Needed will be included in each lesson, including items from the Junior Visuals. A Learning Center is an area of the room where materials relating to the unit of study may be set up for exploration by the learners to promote discovery learning and understanding. Bulletin Board materials and suggestions are included in the Junior Visuals and on each unit page of the teacher s guide. Margins in the teacher s guide contain information which relates to the sections, activities, teaching tips, Junior Visuals and illustrations. Blank spaces may be used for study or instructional notations. 4

Lesson September 2, Instant Creation Genesis 1:1-18 Lesson Theme: God s great gift of the creation of the universe. Quarterly Theme: God s Gifts to Us Unit 1 Theme: God s Gift of Creation Bible Story And God Said Genesis 1:1-18 In the beginning refers to the beginning of time. Time, or measured eternity, began at creation. Things came into existence on the command of God. Things came into existence where nothing existed before. Creation was not a random happening but a well-planned construction project. God spoke, and the universe came into existence. The Genesis account of creation paints a beautiful word picture of the Spirit of God moving upon the face of the waters to bring order from the chaos. At the command of the Word of God (Jesus) light appeared; the water was divided; land appeared; and plant and animal life was brought into existence. Creation was instant. The things created on each day were created mature and fully developed. All life-forms, from the most simple to the very complex, were created individually. Each day consisted of a measurement of time of darkness and light. Today, man further divides a day into twenty-four parts of time called hours. 7

Devotional: All Things Created, Colossians 1:16, 17. God s Son is the person to whom him refers. God inspired Paul to say all things were created by God s Son, and all things were created for Him. God the Father, His Son and His Spirit created everything! That makes creation special. When you think about all the things God made, you can better understand why the Bible says God is all-powerful. He first made all things; then, He has kept everything exactly where He put it in the entire universe. The sun is still the center of the solar system. The moon still orbits Earth once each month. Stars sill form the Little Dipper in the Ursa Minor constellation and the Big Dipper in the Ursa Major constellation. Lesson Objective: Learners will know God spoke the universe into existence. Bible Principle: God created the universe by the power of His word. H UNDERSTAND THE LESSON OBJECTIVE The power of God is unlimited. God has absolute command of all things. At His word things exist or stop existing. At His word the entire universe came into existence. At His word life was created. He created plant life and animal life. He gave plants and animals the ability to reproduce. The first animals were created instantly, mature, fully functioning and capable of reproducing themselves. God made man in His own image and likeness. God created animals with body and mind, but He created man with a body, mind and spirit. Being of the earth, man could relate to the other creatures of the world. Man s spirit gave him the ability to relate to God. Thus, man became the spokesman to God for the world and a spokesman to the creatures of the world for God. God created this entire, complex universe by the power of His Word. H FOCUS THE BIBLE PRINCIPLE In the beginning God created the universe. The phrase, In the beginning, refers to the beginning of time. The universe was spoken into existence suddenly, according to Isaiah 48:3. When God created light and divided it from darkness, He enabled man to measure time. The cycle of one period of darkness and one period of light was called a day. Time has sometimes been defined as measured eternity. Since God controlled time, He could create rocks to appear very old because man s devices for measuring age cannot account for the age built into them. Adam might have appeared to be twenty years old a few minutes after he was created. The point is that God created the universe, including the so-called laws of nature. As science learns more facts about the universe, it becomes more evident that God indeed created everything. H PARALLEL PASSAGE Memory Verse: Acts 17:24 chalkboard/ marker board eraser chalk/marker Memory Aid The God Who Made the Universe, Acts 17: Memory Verse: God... made the world and all things therein, Acts 17:24. The fact that we are here is evidence of the existence of the God with unlimited power. He reigns supreme from the realm of eternity, and He cannot be confined in man-made temples or limited by the boundary of time. Write the words of the memory verse on a chalkboard or marker board. After each class member reads the verse, erase one word and draw a line in its place. Continue until each word has been erased and the learners can say the correct words for the blank spaces. Encourage learners to memorize Acts 17:24 so that they will be encouraged to accept the Bible position on creation by the spoken command of God. The Parallel Passage is found on page 3 in the learner s manual and is dealt with in the teacher s guide under Final Activity on page 11. 8

H ATTENTION q Arrive early. Cheerfully greet and welcome each learner at the door, calling him by name. Let each one know you are glad he came. Welcome Learners Record Attendance q Direct learners to the learning center. (See Unit 1, page 6.) Encourage learners to examine the objects on the learning center table with a magnifying glass or microscope to explore wonders of God s gift of creation. Encourage learners to write their discoveries on 3'' x 5'' index cards and attach them to the wall with tape. Encourage learners to cut pictures from magazines that illustrate things God created and pin the pictures to the bulletin board. magnifying glass or microscope 8 x 5 index cards tape magazines pins H PRAYER Prayer q Ask for prayer requests. q Lead in prayer, remembering all prayer requests made. Ask God s blessings for learners to explain God spoke the universe into existence and began time when God the Father, the Spirit and the Word (Jesus) initiated the things in the universe. q To help train learners to pray, print out one or two specific requests for the day s study and ask a learner to lead the group in prayer by focusing on these requests. H LESSON SET q Show learners Meaningless Words flash card found in Junior Visuals. Give them several seconds to study the sentence written in nonsense language. Ask: What do you think this sentence states? (Cannot figure it out; seems silly; cannot figure it out without a code.) Visual 1-1 Ask: Why can these letters not be words? (The letters are all mixed up; they are not real words.) Say: Letters in the English alphabet must be in the correct order according to the laws of the language to make words you recognize. These are English letters, but they form words which look like a foreign language because they do not obey the laws of the English language. Words only have power if they mean something. Our words give us the ability or power to communicate. The Bible reveals that God used the power of His words to bring all things into existence. He said, Let there be and the thing He named existed. God created the universe with the power of His word. H KNOW GOD S WORD God made man in His own image and likeness. He set man apart from all other life-forms by making him a spiritual being and giving him the ability to communicate, to express his thoughts in words. Speaking requires energy. God made the human vocal cords to vibrate like the strings of a musical instrument. The sounds which result from speaking move through the air in waves of energy. Humans use words to give form to thoughts they want to express to others. This ability is a reflection of God s own ability and power of speech. He spoke the universe into existence through the power of His word, the eternal Word, His Son. Bible Study For Additional Study: Job 38 41; Psalm 33:6-9; Hebrews 1:1-3; 11:1-3. 9

LEARNER S MANUAL learners manuals Bibles pencils Visual 1-2 Bible Story And God Said, Genesis 1:3, 6, 9, 11, 14, 20, 24, 26, 29. q Read And God Said on page 3 of the Junior Learner s Manual. q Display Days of Creation flash cards, days 1, 2, 3 and 4, 5, 6 at the proper time in the story. Ask: What persons created all things? (God the Father, the Word [Jesus] and the Holy Spirit.) Ask: What form of energy did God use to create all things? (His words, His own power.) Say: No human existed at the time God created the universe. We can only know how it happened if the Creator tells us. The Bible is God s record of His creation of the universe. God the Father said, Let there be, and the things He named appeared. The things appeared by the power of the Word (Jesus) as the Holy Spirit moved. God s unlimited energy caused everything to come into existence. H ACTIVITIES LEARNER S MANUAL ACTIVITIES God s Wonders List things created. Lead to Bible Principle conclusion. H God s Wonders (page 4, learner s manual) q Have learners think of things created by God. (Possible Answers: Grand Canyon, octopus, Adam, camel, grass, eagle, earth, water, spices, dinosaurs.) q Guide your learners in naming the order in which all things were created. Again show the visual 1-2, Days of Creation. Ask: What happened when God said let there be on the first day? the second day? the third day? the fourth day? the fifth day? the sixth day? (Light day and night; heaven; land, water, vegetation; sun, moon stars; animal life in water; land animals and man.) Ask: What was God s purpose for dividing time into day and night? (To mark the passing of days, weeks, months and years.) q Lead your learners to the conclusion stated in the Bible Principle. Say: (Bible Principle ) God created the universe by the power of His word. We are all interested in power. Power is the ability to move things and do things. A space shuttle requires very powerful rockets to launch it into space. One tornado can destroy hundreds of man-made buildings. But these things represent tiny amounts of power when compared to the power of God s word. By His word both tangible and intangible things come into existence. God can speak, and an earth will appear. God can say a word, and gravity becomes a force. God can say the word for time to begin, or for time to be suspended. Only God can speak with such great power. Time in My World Discuss time line. Write and share blessings. Lead to Bible Principle conclusion. H Time in My World (page 5, learner s manual) q Discuss with learners the text and time line, noting the passage of time. Have learners write how God s gift of time is a blessing to them. q Lead learners to share their blessings. Ask: In what ways does God allow you to use time for yourself? (To sleep; to play; to go to school; to have friends; to enjoy family.) Ask: In what ways does God want you to use time for Him? (To talk to Him in prayer; to attend services at my church; to worship Him; to read His Word.) q Lead learners to the Bible Principle conclusion. 10

Say: (Bible Principle ) God created the universe by the power of His word. The most important event since creation of man was the coming of Jesus to our world to be our Savior. The gospel of Jesus is the power of God to save those who will repent of their sin and believe. Jesus can be our best friend only if we spend time with Him every day in prayer, talking to Him and reading His words He speaks to us in the Bible. There is no friend who is as loyal and powerful as Jesus. H Where in the World? (page 6, learner s manual) q Have learners find and unscramble the words and reference of the memory verse and write the words on the lines. Answer is in the Junior Learner s Manual. ABC s of Salvation Admit you are a sinner. Believe Jesus is the Son of God. Confess Jesus as your Savior. Ask: How did the world begin? (God spoke and all things came into being.) q Lead learners to the Bible Principle conclusion. Say: (Bible Principle ) God created the universe by the power of His Word. There are many powerful machines in the world today. None can compare to God s power to speak and create. When we create, it takes much time and effort. God said it and it happened. Try to speak anything into existence. It will not happen. Man can do marvelous things but nothing compares to what God did and can do. FINAL ACTIVITY q Read the Parallel Passage, The God Who Made the Universe, Acts 17: Show teaching picture, The God Not Known. Relate the picture to Paul s sermon in these verses. Specify the three ways the listeners responded. Some mocked the message as some people today mock the Bible record of creation. Some said, We want to hear more on the subject. They did not decide what to believe. Some believed the message Paul preached about God, the Creator and His Son. q Have learners make an eternity-time visual. Give each learner a sheet of paper and pencil. Have learners draw a circle on their papers and consider how the circle can represent eternity. Have them mark two lines somewhere across the line of the circle and consider how time is like the distance between the two lines. q Encourage your learners to memorize Acts 17:24. A suggested Memory Aid is on page 8 of teacher s guide. Say: God spoke all things into existence by His power or energy. Time is a part of eternity. Time had a beginning, and it will have an end. Eternity had no beginning and will have no end. This truth about eternity is difficult for us to understand because we live in time. We will understand the nature of eternity when we live with God in eternity and when He brings time to an end. Final Activity Parallel Passage: Acts 17:22-31 Read Parallel Passage. Make eternity-time visual. Recite Acts 17:24. E paper pencils Visual 1-3 Y H LIFE APPLICATION Say: As you read the Daily Bible Readings this week, may your knowledge of creation by God through only His spoken word become more real than ever. God gave us this earth to inhabit because He loves us. Thank God daily for providing us a wonderful place to live. God desires our praise daily. T E R Time N Life Application I will understand only God could have caused the complex universe to exist. I T 11
