5 *An Affirmation of Faith: A Brief Statement of Faith Sec. 3 We trust in God the Holy Spirit, everywhere the giver and renewer of life. The Spirit justifies us by grace through faith, sets us free to accept ourselves and to love God and neighbor, and binds us together with all believers in the body of Christ, the church. The same Spirit who inspired the prophets and apostles rules our faith and life in Christ through Scripture, engages us through the Word proclaimed, claims us in the waters of baptism, feeds us with the bread of life and the cup of salvation, and calls women and men to all ministries of the church. In a broken and fearful world the Spirit gives us courage to pray without ceasing, to witness among all peoples to Christ as Lord and Savior, to unmask idolatries in church and culture, to hear the voices of peoples long silenced, and to work with others for justice, freedom, and peace. In gratitude to God, empowered by the Spirit, we strive to serve Christ in our daily tasks and to live holy and joyful lives, even as we watch for God s new heaven and new earth, praying, Come, Lord Jesus!

9 Chancellor Strine to Speak at the New Castle Seminar Today The next session of the New Castle Seminar will feature Leo E. Strine, Jr., Chancellor of the Court of Chancery of the State of Delaware. Chancellor Strine is a summa cum laude graduate of the University of Delaware and a magna cum laude graduate of the University of Pennsylvania Law School. He was a judicial law clerk in the federal system at both the District Court and Court of Appeals levels, a corporate litigator at Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom, Counsel to Governor Thomas R. Carper (former member of our Church) and a Vice Chancellor of the Court of Chancery ( ) before becoming Chancellor in June, As Delaware s Chancellor, he is a nationally known judge with a corporate law specialty and serves as the Special Judicial Consultant to the Corporate Laws Committee of the American Bar Association. He teaches at the Harvard, Pennsylvania and Vanderbilt law schools. Needless to say it is a privilege to have Chancellor Strine visit with us at the New Castle Presbyterian Church. He will discuss with us corporate ethics. Pot-luck brunch will begin at 11:30 am, with the presentation afterwards. The Abolitionists American Experience will be celebrating the 150 th anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation in 2012 with the broadcast premiere of The Abolitionists on PBS. This three-part docudrama tells the story of how Frederick Douglass, William Lloyd Garrison and their abolitionist allies Harriet Beecher Stowe, John Brown and Angelina Grimké turned a despised fringe movement against chattel slavery into a force that literally changed the nation. Old New Castle was among the sites for filming this program, including the 1707 Meeting House and grounds of New Castle Presbyterian Church. The program will continue 9:00-10:00 p.m. on WHYY January 22.

11 WORKSHOP FOR LAY WORSHIP LEADERS Explore the possibility of participating in worship in a leading way. On February 10, 2013, our Pastor Nancy will moderate a workshop for former, future, and potential lay worship leaders. We will meet in the Meeting House toward the end of Coffee Hour with coffee and cookies in hand. You will have a chance to hear about the reasons for lay worship leadership, to try your voice at the microphone, to ask questions, and to learn hints of do s and dont's from experienced lay leaders as well as from our Pastor. A new Lay Worship Leaders sign-up sheet is posted in the CE building. Everyone, including our young people, is welcome to this workshop.
