1 Statement From The Pastor One hundred and thirty years ago, a small community of believers pioneered a new parish, Saint Bridget, in Gloucester County in historic Glassboro. From those early days, the community has passed from generation to generation a disciples determination to bring the love of Jesus Christ to its faithful, and beyond. While Saint Bridget Parish was growing, a small local college too was planting the seeds of growth. In September 1923, Glassboro Normal School opened with a small enrollment. This was accomplished with the determination of the Glassboro community, including Saint Bridget s parishioners. Over the years, both the parish and the university evolved with the times with more parishioners for the parish and more students for the school. As transitions occurred in response to the times, the school eventually became Rowan University. The parish split off a new parish and began to experience challenges of survival. In 2008, the bishop determined that Saint Bridget would merge with another parish. With the determination of the early founders, the parishioners proposed a unique model for Saint Bridget a university parish. The bishop embraced the creative idea and declared that the parish would be Saint Bridget University Parish. From that time on, Saint Bridget had the unique composite of three communities within the university parish. These communities comprised the legacy parishioners of whom many descend from the early founders, the Latino community from many parts of the Caribbean and Latin America, and the university community of faculty, administration and students. Taking on the challenges of understanding the meaning of a university parish, parishioners were invited in the summer of 2017 to look at how to renew and rebuild Saint Bridget Parish to be a dynamic community of welcome and inclusion seeking to live the joy of the Gospel. After working through the summer, a new Pastoral Council was created with the initial task of creating a comprehensive pastoral plan from the input of the Rebuild Team who met during the summer. Through the fall and winter, the Pastoral Council has met bi-weekly to develop a mission statement and plan. In his apostolic exhortation, Evangelii Gaudium, Pope Francis exhorts the Catholic community to better understand its role in the contemporary world. He says: The parish is not an outdated institution; precisely because it possesses great flexibility, it can assume quite different contours depending on the openness and missionary creativity of the pastor and the community. While certainly not the only institution which evangelizes, if the parish proves capable of self-renewal and constant additivity, it continues to be "the Church living in the midst of the homes of her sons and daughters." (#28) The Pastoral Council of Saint Bridget University Parish, with the help of the Rebuild 3

Team, offers this Pastoral Plan as the foundation for the renewal and rebuilding of our university parish into a welcoming community on fire with the love of Christ, particularly for those who experience injustice and exclusion. We will strive to embrace our diversity as a reflection God s tremendous love for humanity. At Saint Bridget University Parish, all are welcome. Rev. Michael J. Field, D.Min. 2 Parish Mission Statement Through prayerful discernment, respectful dialogue, consideration of diverse viewpoints, and compassion for those we are to serve, the Pastoral Council offers our parishioners the following Mission Statement. Saint Bridget University Parish in Glassboro is called to be a living church, a diverse Catholic faith community on fire with the love of Jesus Christ; passionate about what happens to one another, disturbed by injustice, and eager for the Kingdom of God. 2.1 Reflection on the Parish Mission Statement As we introduce this mission statement, going forward we will always reflect on the meaning of the statement in all planning and decision making. called to be a living church : We are alive with people, growing and evolving, made human beings with Christ as the center. a diverse Catholic faith community on fire with the love of Jesus Christ. : Our diversity includes many ethnicities and races. All on fire with the love of Jesus Christ. passionate about what happens to one another? : We believe that a faith community should heed the words of Jesus to love our neighbor. Whether a neighbor is a shut in down the street -- or neighbors in other cities, states, or countries suffering from disasters, we will do something to help. disturbed by injustice? : We are disturbed when injustice is inflicted upon the unborn, uneducated, unsheltered, underemployed the uns, death row inmates, and immigrants. We are disturbed by human trafficking, abuse of children and all people. Our response to being disturbed is to work together to end the injustice. 4

eager for the Kingdom of God. : As missionary disciples, our mission is to go from injustice to justice. We strive to bring the Kingdom of God recognizing that, as a living church, we can transform the world in our Glassboro community and beyond. 3 Facets Of A Vibrant Parish How does a parish know how life giving it has become? How can it see where and how the community can continue to grow into a more holy and dynamic People of God? These facets of a vibrant parish provide some guidance both for assessment and planning for further growth. Parish Mission and Vision - The parish has articulated a clear vision and mission based on Catholic teaching. Parish members are enthusiastic about their faith. They engage in ministry as an expression of their baptism. Welcoming Community - Newcomers, strangers, and returning members feel at home. They speak of the hospitality, support, and joy they experience within the parish community. Liturgy - The celebration of Eucharist is the summit of the sacramental life of the parish. The quality of music and preaching enhances full, active, and conscious participation in the liturgy. Prayer and Spirituality - The daily lives of parishioners reveal that their relationship to God and neighbor is at the core of their prayer and spirituality. Evangelization - Parishioners look for ways to help people to know God both in word and through the witness of loving action. Caring Community - The parish is built on relationships wherein people care about each other, respect differences, and recognize the dignity of all. Compassionate Outreach - Parishioners extend ministry to many: the poor, the sick, the vulnerable, the homebound, the troubled, the bereaved, the lonely, and the alienated. Fiscal Health - The parish meets its expenses, plans, and gives generously to help people beyond the parish boundaries. Lay Ministry - Opportunities to use God-given gifts for others abound. Youth and children volunteer service for others. Adults of all ages are involved in service, formation, and building a more just, moral, and peaceful society. Lay Pastoral Leadership - Professionally educated ministers enhance the staff with their knowledge and skills. Their contribution keeps improving and energizing parish ministries. Lifelong Formation - There are organized formative opportunities provided for all. The faith formation program is well grounded in Scripture and Tradition. It spans early childhood, growing children, youth, and adult commitment through senior years. 5

Youth and Young Adults Welcoming Community Liturgy Vocations Prayer and Spirituality Communication Facilities Parish Mission and Vision Evangelization Caring Community Lifelong Formation Compassionate Outreach Lay Pastoral Leadership Lay Ministry Fiscal Health Facilities - A master plan is in place that ensures the upkeep and safety of grounds and buildings, anticipates growth and future needs, and manages the cost of maintenance and investment. Communications - We foster a parish community that understands its gospel mission, is mutually supportive, and well informed about parish life so that all feel welcome and empowered. Vocations - The parish strives to cultivate vocations to the priesthood, diaconate, and religious vocations and at the same time makes everyone aware of their role in life of the Church. Youth and Young Adults - Youth, young adults, and their families find the parish community a supportive place to be. They feel part of the parish and use their gifts. Lifelong faith formation is provided and becomes something they value. 6

4 Parish Rebuild Planning Process The University Parish of St. Bridget initiated a Rebuild activity in the summer of Several meetings were held throughout the summer with as many as thirty dedicated parishioners. These individuals represented all three of our parish entities including the Latino, Rowan University, and the traditional Glassboro community parishioners. Young and old, single and married, and conservative and progressive all came together to share experiences and visions for our renewed parish future. The group created identities for those we see as the future of our parish in Glassboro; Glassboro Glenn, Hispanic Hector, and Rowan Robbie. Each identity has their unique set of fears, concerns, strengths, weaknesses, needs, and talents. Yet there is commonality in our need to reach out and bring God, faith, and hope to each. As our mission statement says passionate about what happens to one another. From many of those participating in the Rebuild session, a group of parishioners were identified as candidates for a new Pastoral Council to further the Rebuild vision of the parish. Orientation sessions were conducted for those interested in a role on Pastoral Council to foster understanding of the purpose, activity, and commitment expected. A group of nine of parishioners of diverse age and background where commissioned in September 2017 to Pastoral Council. The Parish Pastoral Council assumed the lead role in compiling the many needs, expectations, issues, and strengths shared during the Rebuild discovery sessions in the summer. Pastoral Council began compiling this information which were categorized into the diocesan facets of a vibrant parish and allocated to small council teams for further development. Through further discussion and consultation with the pastor, the pastoral goals and objectives were finalized and organized into the formalized set of goals and objectives found in Section 6. 5 Management of the Pastoral Plan The pastor and Pastoral Planning Chairperson prepare for a follow-up meeting with the Pastoral Council members, Finance Council members, and staff to review the proposed plan for adoption. This review validates the assignment of responsibility for the selected plan objectives. An Order of Blessing and Commitment for the Pastoral Plan is conducted concluding with the signing of a commitment to the Pastoral Plan. Maintenance of the Plan includes monitoring, statusing, reporting, adjusting, assessing, and refreshing its objectives and scope. Application of the Plan-Do-Check process is essential. Pastoral Council is responsible for Plan maintenance, seeking and accepting feedback, recommendations, and suggestions from established parish organizations and parishioners. Pastoral Council shall schedule time during regular council meetings to review progress of the plan objectives and address any critical impediments to continued progress. Periodic assessment of the plan objectives is recommended to make any course corrections in a timely manner. An annual re-assessment and refresh of the plan by Pastoral Council provides the opportunity to closeout achieved objectives, update in progress objectives, and introduce new objectives. 7

Pastoral Council shall ensure the Pastoral Plan is posted on the parish website and articles written for the parish bulletin (and mailed newsletter) to make parishioners aware of the progress of the Plan objectives, the meaning of the Dreams and Values as well as other milestones for the Pastoral Plan. 5.1 Plan-Do-Check Process The Plan-Do-Check process is a collaborative and cyclical process that has greater potential to help us in Catholic ministry. CHECK PLAN DO PLAN - The Parish planning process determines objectives through a methodical approach that provides focus for the Pastor, clergy, staff, Pastoral Council, and Finance Council. Planning is tasked to Pastoral Council for action. The Planning Process: Uses the mission statement and the facets of a vibrant parish for guidance. Sets a manageable number of objectives. Identifies timeline, person responsible, resource requirements, an evidence of success. Adds context about the parish situation, its planning process, its mission and values. DO - The parish and diocesan offices work together as the parish plans and carries-out their ministry objectives. The parish leadership commits to making Pastoral Plan execution a part of parish life by: Preparing it. Following it. 8

Communicating it. Execution of the Plan involves all ministries of the parish community and is not limited to just Pastoral Council. CHECK - The parish is open to collaborative assessment of its efforts for the purpose of improving and learning. Pastoral Council is responsible for continuous monitoring and statusing of the Plan with periodic adjustments and annual refresh. The Plan itself should be a major tool of the pastor, staff, Pastoral Council, and Finance Council all of whom act to adjust, find solutions, celebrate, encourage, and learn in the context of the Plan. 6 Pastoral Plan Goals and Objectives The following subsections detail the Pastoral goals and objectives identified by the Pastoral Council to pursue for the current planning process.
