Right away, they left their nets and followed him. Mark 1:17-18 Jesus came near and spoke to them, I ve received all authority in heaven and on earth. Therefore, go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to obey everything that I ve commanded you. Look, I myself will be with you every day until the end of this present age. Matthew 28:18-20 As a young Christian I was touched by Jesus call stories of follow me. I can t say I was as quick as the first disciples to immediately drop everything and follow Jesus, but I was willing to follow. And I really wanted to get better at following I just wasn t quite sure how to do that. I had so much to learn but didn t feel like I had the right tools or focus in my attempts at following Jesus. At that point in my life I attended worship fairly regularly, I taught various age groups of Sunday school, I listened to several radio pastors (some giving conflicting messages), I tried to attend Bible studies when they were offered, I helped in the church kitchen and with fund raisers as I could. And I did begin to learn although not all of it was positive. I was very haphazard in my attempts to follow. I was flitting about from this to that and wondering why I didn t seem to be growing much as a disciple one who follows. Even after growing in my relationship with God enough to discern the further call, go, and make disciples, I have continued to struggle with just how to do this. Through my continuing education opportunity I have come to realize that an important element missing from my desire to follow Jesus and to go and make disciples is intentionality in all that I do. With that said, I will be sitting down with the new resources I have and coming up with a four-year discipleship cycle of activities to begin later this summer. It is my heart s desire that you all have the training and resources to intentionally grow as disciples so you are able to make new disciples something we are all called to do as followers of Jesus. I will be asking some of you that I know have interest and gifts to work with me in the planning and implementation of the plans. If I don t ask you and you have an immediate interest, please let me know. I don t want to exclude anyone. You are all such an important part of this process of becoming growing disciples and making disciples because you this Body of continued on page 3

Newsletter Deadline Our next newsletter will come out the first part of July. Please submit your committee reports and others news by 17. You can leave your items in the church office newsletter mail slot, or lewaughtal@msn.com Your participation is needed for the newsletter to be really useful. Our spare change is changing lives The church school students noisy can efforts in helping our congregation observe our special Sunday s collections since last July have been going very well. They have always collected at least $100 all the way up to $131! Thank you for encouraging the children to be more generous through your generosity. We have helped, or will help the following six ministries: Human Relations Day (US social justice), UMCOR (worldwide food, shelter, health, peace), Native American Ministries (US missions and scholarships), Peace with Justice (global peace and justice programs), World Communion (US scholarships) and UM Student Day (scholarships and loans). Thank you for bringing your change to church on the second Sunday of each month.

4 Phillips UMC Connection 4 Peace Garden or Peas Garden? The new community garden has officially been named the Peace Garden, as suggested by one of the Phillips Middle School students, who also happens to be one of our church school students. The garden is located in the southwest corner of the Phillips High School grounds. The garden s purpose is to provide access to free, fresh produce for those who currently do not have it, whether for financial or other reasons. Right now, we are looking for donations of asparagus and rhubarb plants for the exterior perimeter. We will need additional green thumbs assisting our Master Gardeners once we are ready to plant. If you are interested in helping, please contact Julie at jolson@phillip.k12.wi.us or call S mores for a cause We have a couple of youth going to summer camp this year and they could use S more help from us. There are S more kits in the back of the sanctuary next to a donation jar. For a donation of $1 or more you may share the camping experience with a S more kit (roasting sticks not included ). Supplies are limited, so get yours now. Think of the memories you will help to make. Thanks! Embracing technology We live in a world full of technology and it isn t going away any time soon. So, pastor is inviting us to use it if we have it. If you have been in church this spring you (hopefully) noticed a new piece of information in the bulletin inviting us to text Pastor L at with any questions that may have come up during worship. Of course for those who aren t in to the smart phones you can still ask Pastor face-to-face if you have questions or comments. She welcomes them either way. Methodist After-school Program plant sale The students in the Methodist After-school Program (MAP) helped to plant flower and vegetable seeds this spring to sell during our garage sale There have also been some who have pre-ordered plants and those will be ready about the same time. You may have noticed some of those plants soaking up the sun on the window sills in the sanctuary. Please help make sure they all get a home at the sale and support our youth. 5 Phillips UMC Connection 5 Lenten Worship Offerings This year the decision was made to give all of our Wednesday Lenten service offerings to the local Coats for Kids ministry. I am delighted to report that we raised $604 for this important local ministry. We also collected another $201 through hosting the intermission at the spring Northwoods Players production of Shrek. Trustees Report The Trustees Committee is very excited about the upcoming projects that should be completed this spring. The bell-tower will be repaired and re-sided by JC Builders, the roof will get new shingles by The Roof Doctors and the handicap ramp will be rebuilt by Rod Pitzke. These are all funded projects thanks to very successful fundraisers and donations. We have a donation coming in the form of our lawn being mowed by Brent Edwards. This will result in maintenance monies being used for other needed work. Thanks, Brent! We are hoping that none of our projects run over budget as we are hoping to repair our center exterior rear church window and cover it with protective glass. Once the handicap ramp is finished, we are going to paint it white with a grey deck. Save the Date Please be aware of our work day scheduled for 20. Look for a signup sheet at church. Please be a part of this project as we always have a good time while sprucing up the church and parsonage. See you there! What s going on in our church? If you have been unable to attend a church council meeting but are interested in what has been discussed, you can find the current meeting minutes posted in the church study on the bulletin board. You can t miss them as they are posted over a bright yellow background. And please remember you are always encouraged to attend the meetings and be part of the decision-making process. Our next meeting is scheduled for Thursday, 25 at 6 p.m. Ministry plan Pastor has referred to a ministry plan from time to time. If you would like to see what is going on with that, you can find it posted next to the church council minutes in the church study. It is posted over a bright orange background. Please consider helping to keep our church looking welcoming by signing up to clean one or two weeks this summer. Sign up with a partner to get the chores done faster and make them more fun. There is a sign-up sheet at the church. E-giving coming soon We have begun the process of making e-giving available. There will be a variety of ways to give electronically once it is all set up including through a link on our Web site. The application process has been started. We just have to work out a few details now. Hopefully before the end of summer this will be available to those who are interested.

6 Phillips Phillips United UMC Methodist Connection Church 6 Si 115 Center Avenue Phillips, WI VIM Trip to UM Children s Services This return trip to a very worthy agency on the front lines of efforts to deal with folks with major life issues relating to poverty and lack of basic life opportunities is set for July 31 through August 4. This is always a rewarding trip as the agency has been in existence for years and is very dynamic in the Milwaukee community. The ladies who made the trip two years ago were all deeply touched by the experience and recommend it. Pastor L has registration forms at the church. There is a cost of $150 for the week and scholarships are available if needed. A deposit of $25 is due with the registration. Final payments are due by 30. Stained Glass A minister tells of his first Sunday in a new parish and of presenting the children s message. It seems the sanctuary in the new church had some magnificent stained glass windows, so his message centered on how each of us is called to help make up the whole picture of life (the life of the community of the faithful). Like the pictures in the windows, it takes many little panels of glass to make the whole picture. And then he said, You see each one of you is a little pane. And then pointing to each child, You re a little pane. And you re a little pane. And you re a little pane. And It took a few moments before he realized why everyone was laughing so hard.
