2 Page Two November 22, 2015 THE FATE OF JESUS Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe November 22, 2015 Jesus Christ is the faithful witness, the firstborn of the dead and ruler of the kings of the earth. ~ Revelation 1:5 This is the end of the road for Jesus. He is dragged to court on a capital charge. Will He be acquitted or sentenced to death? He seems to be rather indifferent to the whole scene. But I ll bet His Father is not. Parents who sit in courtrooms waiting for the jury s decision on the fate of their children wonder where they went wrong. I wonder what the Father of Jesus thought. Maybe something like this: How did My Son and I end up here, now? Could it have gone differently? His dual slogan of repent and believe was ambivalent at best. Repent of what? Of their sins, of their preference for sacrifice instead of doing justice, or repent of commercializing the temple, of calculating their relationship with me? And what did He call them to believe? In His work, in His miracles, in His vision, in Himself? Although He was patient and understanding, Jesus demanded a lot from His followers. In their family-dominated culture, He insisted that they leave their blood families and form a spiritual family. In their poverty belt, He told them to become even poorer - and then to consider themselves blessed. At this crossroads of invading armies, He told them to be peaceable, even to love enemies. And to their subjugated, defeated non-nation, He proposed the idea of a kingdom. The Son knew as well as previous prophets that miracles are always problematic. The meaning of miracles is open to interpretation. Does blindness cured designate sight or insight? Jesus talked about ordinary things - lilies, barns, banquets, and sheep. But He put them together in challenging ways. Is building bigger barns prudent or presumptuous? Is reducing debt cheating or good business? Is it foolish or wise to sell everything for a single pearl? Is paying all workers the same an act of kindness or injustice? And what does all the earthly ordinariness have to do with a heavenly kingdom? Even so, the carpenter Jesus felt at ease with common people. It was the leaders who made Him question Himself most. Should He have been more patient with the Pharisees, less argumentative with the scholarly Sadducees? And then those powerful Romans - should He have made it clearer that He was not starting a competing kingdom? Or maybe He was. Just like anyone else, Jesus could never know at any given moment what might be crucial. But it s too late now for Jesus to reconsider. And God the Father says to Himself, You did good, My Son. THANKSGIVING DAY MASS Parishioners are urged to start their Thanksgiving celebration in the most appropriate way by attendance at Mass. Mass on Thanksgiving Day, November 26th, is at 9:00 AM. You may bring something from your holiday table and it will be blessed during the liturgy. A collection will be taken to benefit Aid for Friends. ADVENT GIFT-GIVING MASS On Tuesday, December 1, at 7:00pm, we will have our annual Advent Gift-Giving Mass. We ask each family to attend the Mass and bring a gift (toys or clothing) for a poor child who would not otherwise receive a new gift for Christmas. Representatives from St. Katharine Drexel Parish in Chester and Sacred Heart Parish in Camden will be present to accept your gifts. Please do not wrap the gifts, but you can put them in gift bags, as long as the gifts can be seen. You are invited for refreshments in the auditorium after Mass. Even if you are unable to attend the Mass, you can still bring a gift to the sacristy in Church during the day. St. Ignatius has always been very generous in helping people who have far less than we do. Let s continue this great tradition! ROSARY All are invited to recite the rosary after the 9:00am Mass. For those who can stay longer, the Chaplet of Divine Mercy is also recited.

3 Page Three November 22, 2015 CELEBRATE THE JUBILEE YEAR OF MERCY December 8, November 20, 2016 The Archdiocese of Philadelphia invites everyone to celebrate the Jubilee Year of Mercy through a special commitment to pray the Chaplet of Divine Mercy each day of the Holy Year. Along with praying for your personal, family, and parish intentions, please consider including in your prayers the following intentions: For a renewal of the regular reception of the Sacrament of Confession for all Catholics of the Archdiocese For an increase in vocations to the priesthood and the sanctity of all priests For the conversion of those who do not yet know the love of Jesus Christ What is the Chaplet of Divine Mercy?... The Chaplet of Divine Mercy is a prayer that uses traditional Rosary beads to meditate upon and ask for the infinite mercy of God that was poured out upon the world through the passion of Jesus Christ. The prayers of the Chaplet were given by Jesus to St. Maria Faustina Kowalska ( ) with the promise of many powerful graces as a fruit of this prayer. To learn more about the Chaplet and our Archdiocesan celebration of the Jubilee Year of Mercy, visit: ArchPhila.org/mercy. What an accomplishment! For it is in giving that we receive. - St. Francis of Assisi ST. IGNATIUS PARISH APPEAL ~ UPDATE As you know, our annual parish appeal is underway and will run through January 31, Thank you to all who have responded to this year s appeal. For those who have not yet made their gift, there is still plenty of time. You should have received a letter from Monsignor Shoemaker about this effort. If you have not received the appeal materials, please contact the rectory office at , ext Appeal envelopes are also available at each of the exit areas of the church. As of our sixth week of the Parish appeal, 237 families have contributed $65, toward our goal of $175, You may place your completed appeal envelope containing your gift in the regular Sunday collection basket. You may also mail your gift to the Parish office or drop it off there anytime during our appeal, or as soon as your means allow. Thank you for your generosity! SOCIAL ACTION COMMITTEE COLLECTION ~ WEEKEND OF NOVEMBER 28TH AND NOVEMBER 29TH, 2015 As we prepare for the Thanksgiving holiday, we are reminded of the many blessings that have been bestowed on us. Most of us do not have to worry about food, shelter, or other necessities. Our holiday table is full, our gift buying has begun, and we often take it all for granted. As a faith community, we must be mindful of those people who are needy and impoverished, and we must be people who care for each other. There are so many families in need of the bare necessities, and we must do all that we can to help those less fortunate in our community. The Social Action Committee is most appreciative of your past support in helping those people struggling to make ends meet, and you have provided furniture, clothing, diapers, and most recently, food, through our periodic drives. Monetary support is important as well, as Catholic Social Services often have immediate needs which must be met and our periodic collections keep funds available for this purpose. Our next collection will be held the weekend of November 28th and 29th. This will be the last collection for this year, and since the holidays often present special challenges, we are again asking for your financial assistance. Envelopes have been provided in the collection packet and checks should be written to St. Ignatius with a notation to the Social Action Committee. Thank you for your support. Your donation, big or small, will make a difference in someone s life. If you are aware of a family in need, or if you are interested in being part of our committee, please contact the rectory at Enjoy a wonderful Thanksgiving!

5 Page Five November 22, 2015 MUSIC MINISTRY NOTES Dr. Frank Klose ~ Music Minister fklose@siparish.org The Lord is King! Our liturgical year comes to the end with the Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe, commonly know as Christ the King. The King of Glory (#572) and To Jesus Christ Our Sovereign King (#537) are fitting choices for the Solemnity. Alleluia Sing to Jesus (#949) also celebrates the kingship of Jesus, as His the Scepter, His the Throne! The Gospel reading reminds us that the Kingdom of God does not belong to this world. Our Eucharistic hymn, One Bread One Body (#932) reminds us of the great unity we share in this Kingdom of God, whether gentile or Jew, servant or free, woman or man. Both the children s and adult choirs are forming for Christmas. If you are interested in joining for the holidays, please speak to a music minister at Mass or Frank at the address listed above. Practices will be held Thursdays in December - grade 3 through 8 for children s choir at 5:30pm and adults at 7:00pm. If you have a special intention for life, notify us at lruppersberger@gmail.com or through one of the sacrificial envelopes at the entrances of the church and your petition will be placed weekly at the prolife Rose of Life pedestal. Every human person - no matter how vulnerable or helpless, no matter how young or how old, no matter how healthy, handicapped or sick, no matter how useful or productive for society - is a being of inestimable worth created in the image and likeness of God. This is the dignity of America...the ultimate test of her greatness; to respect every human person, especially the weakest and most defenseless ones, those as yet unborn. (St. John Paul II) As we approach Thanksgiving, we need to ask ourselves what is the most precious gift for which we should give thanks? Our goods? Our home? Our family? Our children? Our jobs? Our education? Our freedom?...or life?...without which none of the former would exist let alone have value! Our Lady of Guadalupe, pray for us.
