In a chaotic world, we find strength in knowing that God is always near. That is why I m grateful for the ministries of peacemaking and reconciliation in the Prince of Peace, which culminates with the Peace & Global Pastor s Peace This is where I would feature the upcoming events for the month. Witness offering on World Communion Sunday, October 7. It is Or good I could to feature be reminded your article. that, with all the discord, pain, and conflict in our communities and in the world, we serve a God who promises harmony and responds to violence with reconciliation and peace. The Peace & Global Witness Offering draws Presbyterians together and provides education and exposure to those who show us how to do this work well. It has helped support our church partners in Madagascar recover from years of destructive development. This year we have the special blessing to host a peacemaker from the church in Madagascar here at HPC. Rev. Perline Cooper (see the flyer) will join us in worship, followed by an International potluck lunch and a continuing conversation about the mission of the church in Madagascar. We give to the Peace & Global Witness offering because we know that every level of society is in need of Christ s Cont. on pg. 3)

From our congregation, where we retain 25 percent of this offering to support local peace efforts; to the wider presbytery region, where 25 percent is used to support peacemaking efforts being pursued, together with our neighboring congregations; and to the ends of the earth, where the remaining 50 percent is deployed by the Presbyterian Mission Agency to join the peacemaking efforts of church partners all over the globe. We join these monetary gifts with our prayers for peace and our work for justice. Check out the Peace & Global Witness website ( n.org/peace-global) to find out more information on how your support of this offering helps. As a community of faith, we want to deepen our commitment to peacemaking so that it becomes a visible and profound witness to our community. I challenge each of us to consider how we might be a witness, and generously give to the Peace & Global Witness Offering. I pray that the God of Peace would join with Christians all over the globe on World Communion Sunday, October 7. 4 HPC Koinonia Newsletter P a ge 4 Mission News It's HPC Craft Fair time!! YOU have an opportunity to help! So, heat up your ovens: Quick breads (apple, zucchini, banana, etc) are ON the menu! HPC CRAFT FAIR - Saturday, October 27, 9AM-3PM LUNCH is coordinated by the Mission Commission & HPC volunteers in support of VOH as well. Contact Nancy Johnson if you are available to help. Space is filling up fast. There are a variety of vendors selling everything from Angel items to wool sculptures. And there is more: adult bibs (yes, even adults need them), baby items, dog & cat treats & jackets, jams & jellies, jewelry, papercrafts, pumpkins, soft snowballs, tree skirts... and more! Vendors are from HPC and the community! Rental proceeds will benefit VILLAGE OF HOPE! In the past the Craft Fair has enabled us to send ~$1000/ yr. We view the HPC Craft Fair as an opportunity to reach our community as well as financially support VOH! Please contact Sue Dever (Fair Coordinator) or Nancy Johnson (Elder, Mission Commission) if you are interested in helping to sell (VOH/HPC has a table) or bake (bread/food) on the day of the Sale. Worship News After some months of hiatus, our co-mission met again in September. If you've noticed the change to our sanctuary, you might guess that we were a bit restless and ready to get things done, which I hope you'll agree is a good thing. :-) If you're still wondering what I'm talking about, it's this: the back pews have migrated to the fellowship hall. The primary reason for this is to improve wheelchair accessibility in the sanctuary, something we have been discussing as a co-mission since early this year. We also see this as a way to encourage our small congregation to sit a little closer together. When the need arises, we can always bring in additional seating. Thank you to John McFerran and Steve Dever for making it happen! Our co-mission also discussed Steve's Minute for Congregation idea. This is still in the formative stages, so if it sounds intriguing, please find Steve and ask him about it. It has been brought to my attention that our praise team is in need of a bass player. So if you know someone who is tuned into the deeper things in life, or if you are that person, let us know! Please don't forget to check the communion sign-up sheet, and we always appreciate your help with ushering. 8 HPC Koinonia Newsletter P a ge 8 Churches in Madagascar: The 5-million-member Church of Jesus Christ in Madagascar, known by its Malagasy acronym, FJKM. The FJKM has multifaceted and holistic ministries that respond to the challenges of poverty, human exploitation, social and political conflict and environmental degradation. The island of Madagascar, home to 25 million people, is one of the world s poorest nations (92% of its population lives on $2/ day ) while being one of the earth s richest ecosystems (80% of its flora and fauna are exclusive to Madagascar). Perline Cooper has been an ordained pastor for 38 years in the 25-million member Church of Jesus Christ in Madagascar (FJKM), our partner denomination in Madagascar. Rev. Cooper has served as head of the Sunday School for the FJKM for 18 years, taught Biblical Hebrew at one of the FJKM s seminaries for 13 years, served as Vice President of the FJKM for 4 years and headed up the FJKM AIDS Program for 5 years. She currently oversees the ministry of 3 Malagasy congregations in North America Montreal, Ottawa and New York City. Perline lives in Albany, NY with her husband Bruce Cooper. They have one son, Allan Cooper. FJKM, Reforestation & Environmental Education, Madagascar In response to the environmental degradation that is devastating the country, the Church of Jesus Christ in Madagascar (FJKM) is promoting sustainable integrated development through its environmental program. PC(USA) funds will be used to install village tree nurseries, train farmers and pastors in agriculture and arboriculture to provide sustainable livelihoods and reduce environmental impact, and create and operate an environmental education program in primary schools.
