REMEMBER VERSE This is what the LORD says your Redeemer, the Holy One of Isreal: I am the LORD your God, who teaches you what is best for you, who directs you in the way you should go. 2 Inspire On my first day of seminary, the dean counseled us that seminary can sometimes be one of the lowest times in a pastor s life. I was very surprised by this. I d been looking forward to seminary, expecting it to be a time when I would grow closer to God. He cautioned us that we might mistake studying God s Word in an academic way for actually spending time with God. Even after this warning, I fell into this trap, and my intimacy with God suffered. One day, I was given the assignment to attend an all-day seminar called Walk through the Bible. I wasn t very excited about this additional burden on my schedule. I thought I already knew the Bible pretty well. As the sessions began, they started teaching us hand motions for major events in The Big God Story. We parted the Red Sea with our arms and crowned David as king. We flexed our muscles and yelled out Samson! It was incredibly engaging. I stood, sat, and waved my arms while I called out memorable phrases like, Let my people go! The whole audience participated enthusiastically and learned The Big God Story as a faith community. The seminar was memorable and actually very fun. I was struck after leaving with how excited I now was to tell God s story. I think I really got how knowing the big picture can bolster one s confidence and fuel enthusiasm for evangelism. Knowing The Big God Story in a deeper way transformed me and how I teach the Bible. Amidst that challenging and lonely time during seminary, God gave me a fresh perspective on His Word and His story. Learning The Big God Story energized and excited me for serving Him and sharing His message. Jeff Carter Director of HaDavar Ministries, Irvine, CA Equip God has been working out His plan of redemption since the very beginning of The Big God Story. And God chose to use covenants as the mechanism through which He would redeem the world back to Himself. Throughout The Big God Story, God entered into covenants with mankind in order to establish relationships with people and to reveal His plans for dealing with humanity s sin by sending a Redeemer. The four main (redemptive) covenants are the Abrahamic, Davidic, Mosaic, and New covenants. In the Abrahamic Covenant, God promised blessing to the world (the promise of a Redeemer) and chose Israel to be the channel of that blessing. God then gave the terms by which His people, Israel, would be able to experience that blessing: through obedience to the Mosaic Covenant. Later, God clarified this initial promise made to Abraham by giving the Davidic Covenant. The Davidic Covenant gave people a better, fuller understanding of what the coming king (Messiah) would be like. Through the prophets, God promised a New Covenant that would once and for all take care of the problem of sin. Through the New Covenant, God would enable His people to obey His Law through the inner promptings of the indwelling Holy Spirit. When Jesus died on the cross and rose from the dead, this marked the climax of The Big God Story. The 2
cross is the embodiment of the blessing God promised to Israel to bless them and to bless the world through them. Jesus is the promise. He is the promise God gave to Adam and Eve in the garden (Genesis 3:15). He is the promise He gave to Abraham and the prophets through the covenants. When we proclaim, Jesus is alive, we are seeing the fulfillment of thousands of years of promise. Covenants in the Bible Abrahamic covenant: Genesis 12; 13; 15; 17; 18; 22 Mosaic covenant: Leviticus 26 Davidic covenant: 2 Samuel 7; 1 Chronicles 17 New covenant: Luke 22:18 20; Revelation 21:1 7 Support This Easter, meditate on these verses that express the fact that Jesus is our Redeemer, our hope, our Savior. Be blessed by the simplicity of God s Word. He is risen! Job 19:25: I know that my redeemer lives Isaiah 47:4: Our Redeemer is the Holy One of Israel. Isaiah 53:3 6: He was despised and rejected by mankind, a man of suffering, and familiar with pain. Like one from whom people hide their faces he was despised, and we held him in low esteem. Surely he took up our pain and bore our suffering, yet we considered him punished by God, stricken by him, and afflicted. But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds we are healed. We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to our own way; and the LORD has laid on him the iniquity of us all. Matthew 1:21: She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins. John 1:29: John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world! Revelation 22:20: He who testifies to these things says, Yes, I am coming soon. Amen. Come, Lord Jesus. 3

Wardrobe of Wonder What sit: Empty Wardrobe Jesus followers took His body, wrapped it in linens, and placed it in a tomb. They waited until the end of the Sabbath to return and prepare His body for burial. When they arrived at the tomb, all they found were the linens that were used to wrap His body. The tomb was empty. He had risen, just as He said! The What sit connected to The Big God Story is hidden in the wardrobe. Pick a volunteer, allow them to choose a hat for you and one for themselves. Let them take a peek at the hidden object. Have the other kids put on their imaginary thinking cap. Tell them they get to vote to see what they think is in the What sit. They vote by raising their hand for the object they think is hidden the Wardrobe. > Then as host you say. If you think our clue is a, raise your hand, If you think our clue is a, raise your hand, If you think our clue is a, raise your hand, Let the child volunteer tell which answer is correct! ASK (Child s name), what did you find in the wardrobe? Ask the other children: Why do you think there wasn t anything in the wardrobe? Encourage children to respond. Those are good ideas! Well, I think it s time we find out how an empty wardrobe fits into today s part of The Big God Story. Do you know what time it is? 7
The Big God Story Matthew 28; Mark 16; Luke 24; John Storyteller Storytelling Technique: Interactive with Audio and Images SUPPLIES Bible (adult or children s to use during teaching) What sit: Large Rock audio clip: Happy Day (see Resource Files) Easter Bonus Lesson images: #1 Empty tomb, #2 Angels with Mary, #3 Jesus and Mary, #4 Telling disciples, #5 Jesus shows wounds, #6 Breakfast with Jesus (see Resource Files) ENGAGE Hello, friends! It s good to see you today. Before we jump into The Big God Story, will you pray with me? Let s ask God to speak to our hearts and teach us today. (Lead children in a Prayer of Release.) Prayer of Release When we ve met together, we ve heard how Jesus fulfilled the what the prophets said by riding on a donkey into Jerusalem. From the very beginning, God promised He would send a Savior. God kept His promise and sent Jesus as our Savior. Why did God send Jesus? (Allow children to respond.) That s right! Jesus came to earth to make the way for us to be with God forever and ever. Today in The Big God Story, we re going to hear about what happened after Jesus died on the cross for us. If you know what happened, raise your hand quietly. (Allow children to respond.) Wow! Friends, after Jesus died, some of His close friends placed Him in a tomb. They rolled a big heavy rock in front of the entrance to the tomb to seal it shut. His body was in the tomb for three days. Can you count to three on your fingers? (Children will answer.) Let s count together. One, two, three! Good! How long was Jesus in the tomb? (Kids answer.) Three days! That s a long time. During that time, His friends were so sad He was dead. When Mary came back to His tomb, she saw that the big heavy rock was rolled away from the entrance to the tomb. The tomb was empty! (Tech: Cue image #1 Empty tomb.) The large rock can help us to remember that Jesus tomb was empty on the third day! The big heavy rock was rolled away! Well, when Mary saw that the tomb was empty, she started to cry. She was sad all over again. Friends, why do you think Mary was crying? (Allow children to answer; interact with their responses.) Mary looked into the tomb and saw two angels. (Tech: Cue image #2 Angels with Mary.) The angels asked Mary, Why are you crying? She told them, They ve taken my Lord away and I don t know where He is! When she turned around, guess who was standing behind her? (Tech: Cue image #3 Jesus and Mary. Kids answer.) That s right! It was Jesus! Even though Jesus was standing with Mary, she didn t recognize Him at first. She thought He was a gardener. Do you think Mary was expecting to see Jesus? (Children answer.) Well, Jesus asked her why she was crying. Mary told Him it was because Jesus body was gone. Then, Jesus allowed Mary to recognize Him. He said, Mary, and instantly she recognized it was Jesus standing outside of His own tomb! He was no longer dead. He was alive! Jesus is alive! (Tech: Cue audio clip Happy Day. Encourage kids to jump to their feet and dance in celebration.) How do you think Mary felt when she realized that Jesus had come back to life? (Interact with children and their responses. Tech: Cue image #4 Telling disciples.) Mary ran to tell the disciples everything she 8
had seen. She told them she had seen Jesus and He was alive! Wow! That s so amazing! God is so mighty and powerful, He raised Jesus from the grave! Is there anyone like Jesus? (Children answer.) No way! Jesus is God. And Jesus is alive! (Tech: Cue audio clip Happy Day. ) After visiting Mary outside the tomb, Jesus visited more people. When the people saw that Jesus was alive, they went and told others, just like Mary had! Jesus wasn t finished with His visits. He also went to see the disciples. What is a disciple? (Allow children to respond.) That s right! A disciple is someone who follows Jesus, learns from Him, and then teaches others everything they learned from Jesus. (Tech: Cue image #5 Jesus shows wounds.) One of the disciples, named Thomas, had a hard time believing that Jesus was alive. He said, Jesus will have to show me the holes in His hands from the nails and the cut in His side from the sword. Then I will believe that He is actually alive! What do you think Jesus did? (Allow children to respond.) That s right! Jesus showed Thomas the holes in His hands and the cut in His side from when He was crucified. Jesus even let Thomas touch them! Thomas said, My Lord, my God! Jesus is alive! (Tech: Cue audio clip Happy Day. ) Friends, Jesus did many miracles after He rose from the grave! I d like to share one more with you today. Jesus appeared to His disciples again. This time it was early in the morning, while they were fishing on the Sea of Galilee. From the shore, Jesus called out to them, Friends! Have you caught any fish? The disciples yelled back, No! So Jesus said, Throw your net over the right side of your boat! Let s pretend that we re disciples on the boat. Throw your net over the right side. There you go! Let s see if we caught any fish. (Interact with children as they engage.) Guess what? The disciples caught so many fish, their net was way too heavy to carry! They said, It is the Lord! (Tech: Cue image #6 Breakfast with Jesus.) Then the disciples went to shore and ate the breakfast Jesus had for them. Friends, how were the disciples able to have breakfast with Jesus? (Children answer.) That s right, because Jesus is alive! (Tech: Cue audio clip Happy Day. ) Friends, I wonder what it would ve been like to be with Mary, or the disciples, when they saw Jesus after He had risen from the grave. How do you think you would feel seeing Him again? (Allow kids to answer; interact with their responses.) And, I would have loved to have breakfast with Jesus! We know that Jesus was alive then, and He is alive today! He will be alive forever! We can trust God and follow Him with all of our hearts, minds, and strength! Point to your heart; that means your feelings. Point to your brain; that means your thoughts. Now, show me your muscles; that means the things you do. Good job! God wants us to love Him with all our heart, mind, and strength. God gives us everything we need to know Him and trust in Him. Jesus wants us to show all people God s love so they can know Him too! Jesus is alive and He has promised that He will come back again someday. We can trust in Him because He always keeps His promises. Jesus is alive today and forever! Now, that is something to celebrate! Dismiss into Small Groups Kids will go with their small group leaders for response, connect, and create. 9
Small Group Respond 15 min Small Group Leaders Children have an opportunity to reflect (within the faith community) on what they have heard, and to respond to God individually or corporately. This time is focused on the wonder of God and the foundational Truth of His Word. Create: A Painting to Remember SUPPLIES (per small group) Jesus Is Alive template (see Resources) Card stock (1 sheet per child, heavyweight) Watercolor or washable tempera paint (various colors) Paintbrushes (1 per child) Cups (1 per child) Water Disposable tablecloth Optional: colored pencils (or crayons for younger children) PREPARE AHEAD Print the Jesus Is Alive template on heavyweight card stock. SET UP Put the tablecloth on the table. Fill cups with water and place all the materials on the table. RELATE Pass out a sheet of printed card stock to each child. In today s portion of The Big God Story, we heard that Jesus is alive and we celebrated. Let s make something to help us remember that Jesus is alive. We re going to take some time to worship Jesus by creating art that we can take home with us. Each of you has a card that says JESUS IS ALIVE! You can paint around or on the words. When you take this home, it will remind you of what we were celebrating. Would you like to join me in worshipping Jesus by painting? Encourage responses. Great! Wonder Questions RELATE Today we heard a special telling of The Big God Story. We heard how Jesus rose from the grave! He is alive! Because of Jesus, we get to be with God forever and ever. He wants us to be a part of The Big God Story. I wonder What would it be like to see the empty tomb? I wonder How does it make me feel to know that Jesus is alive? I wonder How do I feel about God right now? 10
Worship in Singing * Song 1 1,2,3 * Song 2 Shout * Song 3 We Believe Bless 3 min Children are encouraged and guided through a blessing of a prayer of commission, a portion of Scripture or words asking God s Spirit to overflow from the child s life, for the purpose of declaring God s protection, joy and wisdom. Hold hands with children and form a circle together. Let s all raise our hands together and say, Jesus is alive! Repeat two more times and then speak the blessing taken from Revelation 1:8: Children, may you always remember that you re deeply loved by the God who was, and is, and is to come. He will live forever! 11
