5 Raising Godly Kids Raising Godly Kids Neal and Carrie Rozema are careful about what their young sons watch on TV. Our children are at the age where they re fascinated with superheroes, says Neal. The world will put out superheroes, for one, that aren t real; and for two, that you can t believe in. Superbook is a documentary on real superheroes. Jesus is a real superhero. Joseph is a superhero. Every story is about a superhero that has changed the world. When we started watching Superbook, it was like the spiritual temperature in our home just went up, up through the roof. Carrie Rozema Superbook is more than just entertainment for the boys. With every new episode, they learn more about the Bible. To make sure they receive each new episode as soon as it s produced, the Rozemas joined the Superbook DVD Club. It brings the Word to life for the boys, says Carrie. And once we read the Scriptures, it helps them get a picture of what we just read. Neal explains, I think for a child it makes all the difference in the world to see it lived out, and for them to be able to relate. Gordon Robertson Dedication to Excellence and Historical Accuracy The foundation of Superbook is the Holy Bible, and the purpose of every episode is to reveal the life-changing truth of God s eternal Word. When biblical characters speak, great care is taken to ensure that most of their dialogue comes directly from Scripture. 9 Quality Family Time Quality Family Time Michael and Lorie serve in the Philippine Navy and are sometimes away for weeks at a time so they treasure every moment they have with their young son, Ezekiel. He is an affectionate and sweet boy, says Lorie. He clings to his dad when we say our goodbyes. Ezekiel stays with his grandparents while his parents work, but Sundays are special. That s when they re all home together watching their favorite TV program, Superbook. Ezekiel s family invites neighborhood kids to watch Superbook and study the Bible. Lorie says, Superbook helps me show him what s right and what s not good. It helps me explain who God is and what Jesus did on the cross for us. Now, he initiates prayer before meals and he says I m sorry when he has hurt a playmate. Lorie used to watch the original Superbook series as a child. I remember how the kids would travel to another place and time, she recalls. Ezekiel also likes it when Superbook travels back in time. Recently they watched A Giant Adventure and saw how David defeated Goliath by the power of God. Ezekiel enjoyed the story so much that Lorie made him an outfit like David s, complete with a slingshot and sandals. Now Ezekiel enjoys acting out the story, exclaiming: David shot with a stone and BOOM! Goliath fell down. When his mother asks who gives him power, Ezekiel enthusiastically replies, Jesus! When Lorie heard about a Superbook Bible Ezekiel loves wearing his costume and acting out the story of David and Goliath with his parents, Michael and Lorie. costume contest, she sent in Ezekiel s photo and he won first place. The little boy was thrilled when Gizmo paid them a surprise visit to deliver their prize! Ezekiel won a set of Superbook DVDs from Season 1, Lorie explains. Now he watches Superbook whenever he wants. We can also show them to kids in our neighborhood and hold a Bible study with them. I m so grateful to CBN for the new Superbook. 12 New Hope in India New Hope in India Fear was a constant companion for young Shimpy, growing up in India. When my dad came home drunk, he would yell at us for no reason, she says. Because of his drinking, her parents were on the brink of divorce. And keeping up with homework was nearly impossible. She recalls, I had to wait until he fell asleep before it was quiet enough for me to study. Life grew even worse when her dad lost his job and couldn t pay tuition, forcing her to drop out of school. Superbook gave Shimpy faith to pray for her alcoholic dad. Then her aunt took her to a Christian youth group. There, Shimpy saw a Superbook video showing how faith in God overcomes fear. When God told Moses to deliver the Israelites from bondage, Moses was afraid, she says. But God told him, Moses, why are you afraid when I am there with you? As she watched other Superbook episodes, she was encouraged to read the Bible and pray to Jesus. Shimpy even began praying by her dad s bedside while he was passed out, drunk! I would pray for my dad to stop drinking and that my parents would love each other again, she says. As her faith increased, so did her courage. Her father will never forget the day his young daughter told him, Dad, what you are doing is not right. You need to understand that it is causing many problems. Shimpy invited the youth group teacher and her husband, a pastor, to come to their home. Her dad recalls, They prayed to Jesus to help me. God answered Shimpy s prayers, and now her life is filled with joy! Then I felt a desire within me say, Please stop this now. Your child is growing up. So from that point on, my addiction slowly went away. Today, her parents marriage is restored, her dad has a new job as a repairman, and she is happily back in school. Superbook taught me that God is always with us, so there is no reason to be afraid, she smiles. When I saw how Jesus answered our prayers, I knew He was the one, true God. After I accepted Jesus into my heart, I have been very happy and filled with great joy! Superbook taught me that God is always with us, so there is no reason to be afraid! Children were excited to receive prizes and personalized thank-you notes from Gizmo. Based in Cairo, CBN s Superbook team holds events throughout Egypt and thousands of children have made decisions for Christ. The team has also given the Superbook curriculum to more than 300 churches and trained over 900 Sunday school teachers. CBN s regional office in Ukraine has started more than 770 Superbook Clubs in 12 countries, including Russia, Ukraine and Kazakhstan. Churches use the Superbook series as a creative way to reach children who have never heard about Jesus and to teach the Bible. The Nepali version of Superbook began airing on national television two weeks before the devastating earthquake of After the disaster, Gizmo attended live events where more than 30,000 children were able to have fun and learn about God s love. 14 Philippines As part of Superbook s school tours in the Philippines, a team recently visited an elementary school in Marikina City. About 1,000 elementary students were delighted by a visit from Gizmo. They also enjoyed watching a Superbook episode, dancing, games, and singing The Salvation Poem. United Kingdom Superbook Schools is a new resource for teaching religious education to primary school students in the U.K. Pupils love the animated video clips, while teachers appreciate the wealth of information such as how each story fits into the wider context of the Bible. Lessons focus on Creation, the Exodus, the Ten Commandments, David and Goliath, Christmas, and Easter. Cuba CBN s Orphan s Promise has Gizmo tours to introduce Superbook and its curriculum to hundreds of churches in Cuba. Teams also lead Superbook summer camps and hold celebrations to share the Gospel while giving Superbook DVDs and school supplies to kids in need. In Peru, about 200 hungry children receive a warm meal each weekday at The Village in Iquitos, sponsored by CBN s Orphan s Promise. One boy named Roger, who lives with his grandma because his mother abandoned him, found new hope watching Superbook episodes at The Village. He accepted Jesus and now brings his friends to hear about the Lord. Lebanon In Lebanon, a CBN staff member named Elian brought Superbook back to the land of her birth. While visiting a refugee camp in the Bekaa Valley, she recalls, I saw me. That s because she grew up in a war zone, and the only fun part of the day was watching classic Superbook on TV. It changed my life, she says. Elian showed the Superbook episode In the Beginning to nearly 200 Muslim children and adults. I was watching their faces. And there was this one child, his eyes were shining. It was amazing how Superbook can bring joy. 15 Reaching Refugees Reaching Refugees Reem has witnessed unimaginable horror in her young life. In Syria, bombs fell without warning. She recalls, One killed my best friend, who was playing in a nearby field. Then a bomb hit our house and we ran. I was so scared. The family fled to Lebanon, where they now live in poverty. One of the hardest things is seeing Reem not getting a good education, her mother says. She is a very smart child. I saw her standing on the balcony, sadly watching other kids come home from Reem s mother is thrilled that her daughter can attend school. school. She said she thought of how nice it would feel to go to school. That made me cry. Reem says, For a little while, I went to a public school that let in refugee children. But the teachers were mean, and beat me and the other Syrian refugees for no reason. So I stopped going. Then she was invited to attend Heart for Lebanon Hope Center, supported by CBN. I love this school because the teachers treat us well and really care about us, Reem smiles. Here, she and hundreds of other Muslim refugees study English, Arabic and math. They also learn about the love of Jesus. I have no problem with Reem going to a Christian school, her mother explains. She has developed a sense of love and forgiveness there. As a mother, I am supposed to teach my children these things, but they were learning the opposite because of the war in Syria. Now she comes to me and tells me about good manners and a positive attitude. Reem s family lost everything when they fled for their lives. Now they have a new start! To help students understand the Bible, the school shows Superbook videos in Arabic. I really enjoy Superbook because I can see the stories of Jesus, says Reem. Jesus is teaching us not to lie or hurt others, but to respect life and forgive those that do bad to us. My favorite part is praying to Jesus after the Superbook episode. Her mother concludes, She has a chance for a good future, which is very rare for girls in our culture. I just want to thank all the people who are helping support us. God bless you. Reem adds, I want to thank the Christians and everyone helping us with all my heart. I pray that people would stop doing evil things to one another. 17 Saved Using an App Saved Using an App Although Laney is only 10, one of her favorite people is 80-year-old Skip, a neighbor who is nearly blind. Their friendship began with a mutual love of animals. discussion, Kelli was surprised to see how much Laney knew about the Bible even though the little girl had only been to church once before. The Superbook Bible App has already been downloaded over 3.6 million times. Nothing I wouldn t do for that kid, Skip says. In fact, he told her parents, I d die for her. Skip wanted Laney to know about Jesus, the man who really did die for her. Since her family didn t attend church, he invited her to go with him. That day in Sunday school, Pastor Kelli showed the children a Superbook video. During the class Laney accepted Christ through Superbook s Bible app. Laney happily explained, I learned it all on the Superbook app! A year earlier, a friend at school had shown her the free Superbook Bible app. Laney promptly downloaded it onto her own tablet and started learning Bible stories and playing Superbook games. Then she saw an invitation on the app, asking if she wanted to know God. I said yes, says Laney, and ever since then, God s always been in my heart. Recently, Laney was baptized. 19 Teaching Children Teaching Children In Indonesia where nearly 2,000 churches use Superbook Academy a Sunday school teacher named Bram was preparing his first lesson. He had never seen Superbook, so he invited his two children to watch In the Beginning with him at home. His six-year-old son, Richard, explains, The Superbook story was about Adam and Eve. The snake tricked Eve and she ate the fruit. They sinned against God. Bram prepares to teach Sunday school by watching Superbook with his children. Bram says, I noticed how my son was engaged in the story. Then at church, he was excited to see how Superbook captured his students attention. Sometimes it s hard for children to sit still in Sunday school. When they watched Superbook, they really focused on the story. The Superbook curriculum was great, too! It came with lessons, a schedule, and activities. What Bram didn t expect was how much it would impact his own son. As they re-watched the video about Adam and Eve, Richard suddenly made a confession to his father. Earlier, he had blamed his sister for breaking a dish but now he admitted, I was the one who dropped my little sister s plate. Bram recalls, Right in the middle of the Superbook story he said, Daddy, I was the one who did it! I was amazed! Richard apologized to his sister, then prayed and asked Jesus to forgive him. His voice was shaking, says Bram. I d never seen him pray so seriously before! After Richard confessed, he and his dad prayed together. Richard adds, After I prayed with Daddy, I felt better. Bram wondered why his son confessed during the video. Richard told me he didn t want to be tricked by the snake like Adam and Eve, he says. God used Superbook to change my son s heart! Kids Ministry Texas, USA In Texas, Lakewood Church s Spanish congregation uses Superbook Academy in their Sunday school program. What I love about Superbook is that it s centered in the Word of God, observes Pastor Luis Lopez, the children s ministry director. It s teaching the basics of Christianity and is based in the Bible. Over 1,000 kids attended the church s annual festival, featuring Superlibro the Spanish version of Superbook. Pastor Gloria Montero explains, Superbook is a great tool to teach the children how to face their life with the Word of God. After watching The Road to Damascus, the children sang along with The Salvation Poem, a music video explaining God s plan of redemption. When asked if they wanted to accept Jesus, hundreds raised their hands. Says seven-year-old Iliana, He loves us and He sent His son Jesus to die on the cross for us.
