1 Effective Evangelism Relationships and Reaching Relationships I do not believe that God intends soul winning to be an exclusive privilege of a chosen few. Every born again believer can be a soul winner. The difference between by chance soul winning and consistent soul winning I believe can be summed up in two words: INTENTION and RELATIONSHIPS. We will succeed at that which we undertake with intention. Nobody accidentally gets out of debt. Nobody accidentally flies to another part of the country. We set out to cut up credit cards and make extra payments to erase indebtedness. We with purpose pack a suitcase, pay for a ticket and board a plane to reach a new destination. 2 Corinthians 5 defines us as ambassadors for Christ as though Christ was imploring through us be reconciled to God! Because of this calling on each born again believer we must intentionally build relationships with people with the purpose in

2 mind to let our light shine and prayerfully approach opportunities to share our testimony/god s Word. How do I build relationships? Smile Talk to people Ask questions about other people s work, family, interests Be genuinely interested in other peoples lives. Frequent places where you sense an open door of relationship Call people by name Listen for hurts, struggles and be responsive to those each time you interact with that person Eat together Communicate your prayer for them Reach First of all, we must be committed to the belief that the Word of God and obedience to that Word is what will set people free. It s as though we re consistently pointing people to the Word of God.

3 In securing home bible studies we must: ASSESS find out where people are in their hunger level for the things of God. OFFER Let s learn the Word of God together. This will give us opportunity to connect and build friendship. TEACH This is the actual practical acting out of HBS s. LOVE This is what we do with the student that has nothing to do with the 45 minutes we spend teaching a HBS but lends great credibility to the 45 minutes we do spend teaching the HBS. PRINCIPLES FOR TEACHING A SUCCESSFUL HOME BIBLE STUDY 1. Determine what kind of study you will begin with. (salvation, survey, 3-4 lesson, 12 lesson, etc.) 2. Communicate that you are not the Bible Answer Man/Woman. We re learning God s Word together. 3. I like to have 45 minutes as the max as far as teaching time. One hour in a person s home is

4 great. Remember, we want them to say, They could ve stayed longer rather than I didn t think they d ever get done! 4. If they are comfortable, have the student read often from the bible. Faith comes by hearing and hearing by the Word of God. 5. Don t chase rabbits. Resist the urge to answer every question if it is not on topic. Perhaps a list of questions at the end of the study would be appropriate for the student to compile. 6. Begin and close each HBS with prayer. I like to ask for personal prayer requests at the end of each week s study. 7. Determine the next bible study date/time at the end of each HBS session. 8. Encourage the HBS student to invite family and friends to the study. 9. The goal of the study is to educate the student in the Word of God. We must also be sensitive however, as to when God is speaking in a moment, that demands practical obedience. (prayer, baptism, etc.) Let s not slip on by those moments just so we can finish the study.

If you are teaching with a chart or power point AND teacher s manual, familiarize yourself enough with the manual that you can teach from the chart or power point and not rely on the manual. 11. Interpret body language (confused look = What doesn t make sense? tears=spirit of God is at work!) 12. If you are a lead, senior pastor teach HBS s. Our churches will see what is important not simply by what we say but by what we do.
