GOSPEL Luke 2:1-14 HOMILY CHRISTMAS EVE I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven, ALL BOW AND BY THE HOLY SPIRIT WAS INCARNATE OF THE VIRGIN MARY, AND BECAME MAN. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins, and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen. PRAYER OF THE FAITHFUL OFFERTORY HYMN The first Nowell, the angel did say, Was to certain poor shepherds in fields as they lay; In fields where they lay keeping their sheep, On a cold winter s night that was so deep. Nowell, Nowell, Nowell, Nowell Born is the King of Israel! And by the light of that same star Three wise men came from country far; To seek for a king was their intent, And to follow the star wherever it went. Then entered in those wise men three, Full reverently upon their knee, and offered there in his presence, their Gold and myrrh and frankincense. They looked up and saw a star Shining in the east, beyond them far, And to the earth it gave great light, And so it continued both day and night. Then let us all with one accord Sing praises to our heavenly Lord; That hath made heaven and earth of naught, And with his blood mankind hath bought: 5

SANCTUS CHRISTMAS EVE MEMORIAL ACCLAMATION Following the DOXOLOGY, all respond: THE LORD S PRAYER AGNUS DEI Behold the Lamb of God, behold Him who takes away the sins of the world. Blessed are those called to the supper of the Lamb. Lord, I am not worthy that you should enter under my roof, but only say the word, and my soul shall be healed. 6

COMMUNION HYMN CHRISTMAS EVE While shepherds watched their flocks by night, All seated on the ground, The angel of the Lord came down, And glory shone around. Fear not, said he, for mighty dread Had seized their troubled mind; Glad tidings of great joy I bring To you and humankind. To you, in David s town, this day Is born of David s line The Saviour, who is Christ the Lord; And this shall be the sign. The heav nly Babe you there shall find To human view displayed, All meanly wrapped in swathing bands, And in a manger laid. Thus spake the seraph; and forthwith, Appeared a shining throng Of angels praising God, who thus Addressed their joyful song: All glory be to God on high And to the earth be peace; Good will from heav n to men Begin, begin and never cease. Away in a manger, no crib for a bed, The little Lord Jesus laid down his sweet head. The stars in the bright sky looked down where he lay, The little Lord Jesus, asleep on the hay. The cattle are lowing, the baby awakes, But little Lord Jesus, no crying he makes. I love thee, Lord Jesus! Look down from the sky, And stay by my side until morning is nigh. Be near me Lord Jesus! I ask thee to stay Close by me forever, and love me, I pray. Bless all the dear children in thy tender care, And fit us for heaven, to live with thee there. POSTCOMMUNION HYMN Silent night, holy night! All is calm, all is bright Round yon Virgin Mother and Child, Holy Infant so tender and mild, Sleep in heavenly peace Silent night, holy night! 9 CAROLS 11:30pm At the sound of the Sacristy Bell, all stand and sing Joy to the world! the Lord is come: Let earth receive her King: Let ev ry heart prepare him room, And heav n and nature sing, All sit Joy to the world! the Saviour reigns: Let men their songs employ; While fields and flood, rocks, hills and plains Repeat the sounding joy. He rules the world with truth and grace, And makes the nations prove The glories of his righteousness, And wonders of his love. The Crown of the Roses When Jesus Christ was yet a child, He had a garden small and wild, Wherein He cherished roses fair, And wove them into garlands there. Now once, as summer time drew nigh, There came a troop of children by, And seeing roses on the tree, With shouts they plucked them merrily. Do you bind roses in your hair? They cried, in scorn, to Jesus there. The Boy said humbly: Take, I pray, All but the naked thorns away. Then of the thorns they made a crown, And with rough fingers pressed it down, Till on his forehead fair and young, Red drops of blood, like roses sprung. PIOTR ILYICH TCHAIKOVSKY The angel Gabriel from heaven came, his wings as drifted snow, his eyes as flame. "All hail," said he, "thou lowly maiden, Mary, most highly favoured lady," Gloria! "For know a blessed Mother thou shalt be, all generations laud and honour thee, thy Son shall be Emmanuel, by seers foretold, most highly favoured lady," Gloria! Then gentle Mary meekly bowed her head, "To me be as it pleaseth God," she said, "My soul shall laud and magnify His Holy Name." Most highly favoured lady, Gloria! Of her, Emmanuel, the Christ was born in Bethlehem, all on a Christmas morn, and Christian folk throughout the world will ever say "Most highly favoured lady," Gloria! BASQUE CAROL 9

Little Lamb, who made thee? Dost thou know who made thee? Gave thee life, and bid thee feed by the stream and o'er the mead; Gave thee clothing of delight, softest clothing, woolly, bright; Gave thee such a tender voice, making all the vales rejoice? Little Lamb, who made thee? Dost thou know who made thee? Little Lamb, I'll tell thee. He is called by thy name, for he calls himself a Lamb. He is meek, and he is mild. He became a little child. I, a child, and thou a lamb, We are called by his name. Little lamb, God bless thee! TAVENER There shall a Star from Jacob come forth, and a Sceptre from Israel rise up, And dash in pieces, princes and nations. How brightly beams the Morning Star, With sudden radiance from afar, With light and comfort glowing! Thy Word, Jesus, inly feeds us, Rightly leads us, life bestowing. Praise, O praise such love o erflowing! FELIX MENDELSSOHN-BARTHOLDY All stand and sing: Away in a manger, no crib for a bed, The little Lord Jesus laid down his sweet head. I love thee, Lord Jesus! Look down from the sky, And stay by my side until morning is nigh. All sit. Be near me Lord Jesus! I ask thee to stay Close by me forever, and love me, I pray. Bless all the dear children in thy tender care, And fit us for heaven, to live with thee there. 10

MIDNIGHT MASS PROCESSIONAL HYMN All stand at the sound of the Sacristy Bell Solo All Once in royal David s city Stood a lowly cattle shed, Where a mother laid her baby In a manger for his bed: Mary was that mother mild, Jesus Christ her little child. He came down to earth from heaven, Who is God and Lord of all, And his shelter was a stable, And his cradle was a stall; With the poor and mean and lowly, Lived on earth our Saviour holy. And through all his wondrous childhood He would honour and obey, Love and watch the lowly maiden, In whose gentle arms he lay; Christian children all must be Mild, obedient, good as he. Not in that poor lowly stable, With the oxen standing by, We shall see him; but in heaven, Set at God s right hand on high; When like stars his children crowned All in white shall wait around. THE PROCLAMATION OF THE BIRTH OF JESUS CHRIST The Twenty-fifth Day of December, when ages beyond number had run their course from the creation of the world, when God in the beginning created heaven and earth, and formed man in his own likeness; when century upon century had passed since the Almighty set his bow in the clouds after the Great Flood, as a sign of covenant and peace; in the twenty-first century since Abraham, our father in faith, came out of Ur of the Chaldees; 11

MIDNIGHT MASS In the thirteenth century since the People of Israel were led by Moses in the Exodus from Egypt; around the thousandth year since David was anointed King; in the sixty-fifth week of the prophecy of Daniel; in the one hundred and ninety-fourth Olympiad; in the year seven hundred and fifty-two since the foundation of the City of Rome; in the forty-second year of the reign of Caesar Octavian Augustus, the whole world being at peace, JESUS CHRIST, eternal God and Son of the eternal Father, desiring to consecrate the world by his most loving presence, was conceived by the Holy Spirit, and when nine months had passed since his conception, was born of the Virgin Mary in Bethlehem of Judah, and was made man: The Nativity of Our Lord Jesus Christ according to the flesh. 15 The Choir sings the MOTET MIDNIGHT MASS O holy night, the stars are brightly shining; It is the night of the dear Saviour s birth! Long lay the world in sin and error pining, Till He appeared and the soul felt its worth. A thrill of hope, the weary soul rejoices, For yonder breaks a new and glorious morn. Fall on your knees, O hear the angel voices! O night divine, O night when Christ was born! Led by the light of faith serenely beaming, With glowing hearts by His cradle we stand. So led by light of a star sweetly gleaming, Here came the wise men from Orient land. The King of kings lay thus in lowly manger, In all our trials born to be our friend! He knows our need, to our weakness, no stranger. Behold your King! Before him bend. Truly He taught us to love one another; His law is love and His Gospel is peace. Chains shall He break for the slave is our brother And in His Name all oppression shall cease. Sweet hymns of joy in grateful chorus raise we, Let all within us praise His Holy Name! Christ is the Lord, then ever praise we, His power and glory proclaim. ADOLPHE ADAM POSTCOMMUNION HYMN Silent night, holy night! Behold the miracle of the mother of the Lord: a virgin has conceived though she knows not a man, Mary, who stands laden with her noble burden; knowing not that she is a wife, she rejoices to be a mother. She has conceived in her chaste womb one who is beautiful beyond the sons of men, and blessed for ever, she has brought forth God and man for us. TALLIS 20

In the bleak midwinter Frosty wind made moan, Earth stood hard as iron, Water like a stone; Snow had fallen, Snow on snow, In the bleak mid-winter, Long ago. Enough for him, whom cherubim Worship night and day, A breastful of milk, And a manger full of hay; Enough for him, whom angels Fall down before, The ox and ass and camel Which adore. At the non-choral Masses, all sing The First Nowell, p.5 POSTCOMMUNION HYMN CHRISTMAS DAY Today Christ is born: Today the Saviour appeared: Today on Earth the Angels sing, Archangels rejoice: Today the righteous rejoice, saying: Glory to God in the highest. Alleluia. Our God, heaven cannot hold him Nor earth sustain; Heaven and earth shall flee away When he comes to reign: In the bleak mid-winter A stable-place sufficed The Lord God Almighty Jesus Christ. What can I give him, Poor as I am? If I were a shepherd I would bring a lamb; If I were a wise man I would do my part; Yet what I can I give him: Give my heart. POULENC DARKE 1. God rest you merry, gentlemen, Let nothing you dismay, For Jesus Christ our Saviour Was born upon this day, To save us all from Satan s power When we were gone astray: O tidings of comfort and joy. 2. From God our heav nly Father A blessed angel came, And unto certain shepherds Brought tidings of the same, How that in Bethlehem born The Son of God by name: O tidings of comfort and joy. 3. The shepherds at those tidings Rejoiced much in mind, And left their flocks a feeding In tempest, storm and wind, And went to Bethlehem straightway This blessed babe to find: O tidings of comfort and joy. 4. Now to the Lord sing praises, All you within this place, And with true love and brotherhood Each other now embrace; This holy tide of Christmas All others doth deface: O tidings of comfort and joy. 22
