2 Lighting of the Second Advent Candle We light this candle as a sign of the coming light of Christ. Advent means coming. The glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and all people shall see it together, for the mouth of the Lord has spoken. Show us your steadfast love, O Lord, and grant us your salvation. Let us walk in the light of the Lord. Let us pray. O God, we have lit this candle as a symbol of proclamation. May your Word sent through the prophets lead us to the way of salvation. 10 Arbors Art Exhibit - Arline M. Olds December 21 st to December 30 th OPEN HOUSE December 21 ST 2:00 to 4:30 p.m. Arbors at New Castle is proud to present an art exhibit for our resident, Arline M. Olds. We welcome all of Arbor s residents and their families, Arline s family, church family, and her Delta Kappa Gamma sorority to view her water colors. Some light refreshments will be served. Please come and visit with Arline and enjoy her art work. Noon Circle The Noon Circle will meet on Tuesday, December 9th rather than the usual first Tuesday of the month. 11 Donate a Frozen Turkey If you earn credit for a free turkey this fall please consider donating that free turkey to a Christmas Food Basket project being organized by the Newark Area Welfare Committee. Beverly Stoudt is co-chairperson of this large undertaking. Approximately 360 families and senior citizens will receive a week s worth of non-perishable food on Saturday December 20. Each basket also will be accompanied by a frozen turkey for Christmas dinner. Many grocery stores are offering bargain prices and offers of free turkeys before Thanksgiving. And, some companies give their employees a free turkey for Thanksgiving and/or Christmas. If you have accumulated credit or expect a gift of a turkey and do not want it, please consider giving it to our Christmas Food Basket project. We will need your donated turkey by Saturday Dec. 20. If you plan to donate please call Beverly Stoudt, as soon as you get the turkey, at to arrange for pick up and storage. We have a facility that will store as many turkeys as we can get. If you would like to bring it along to any Sunday church service that would be wonderful and hopefully easy for your family.

12 If you want to purchase a turkey and donate it we will be very grateful. Remember the prices are much better before Thanksgiving than after. We will pledge a turkey. We will bring our donated turkey to church. We do not have space to store a turkey and will need to have our donated turkey picked up. Please call our family at. 13 Spirit of Christmas December 13 Sign-up sheets are available for Spirit of Christmas volunteer positions. We need every member to take part! Visit the Spirit of Christmas station today at the far end of the Fellowship Hall. Volunteer opportunities include making cookies, soup, or bread; selling food, crafts, books, or donated items; serving refreshments; greeting visitors at the Christian Education Building or Manse; making craft items; and other jobs. If you have any questions, contact Susan Flook ( or Spirit of Christmas Book Corner December 13 Please save the CD s - DVD s - Books* you no longer need. Bring to the CE Building from Thanksgiving Day to December 12 th. *We sell paperback, children s and hardback books - (particular interest in Civil War last year). But no serial publications like National Geographic or encyclopedias they do not sell.

14 Calling All Homemade Soup and Bread Makers We need your help again to make those delicious soups and breads for the 2008 Spirit of Christmas celebration on December 13. Sign-up sheets are posted in the Christian Education building for you to volunteer for this gift of love. Remember that the soup is to be freshly made, not frozen, and that the containers, lids, and labels will be on the church kitchen counter for you to take when you need them. There is a separate sheet for your help with the sales. Notice: Containers, lids and labels for the soup makers are now in the church kitchen for you to take at your convenience. Please place the labels on the lids to be seen from the top. Thank you! Spirit of Christmas December 13 - Cookies Since our cookies are soooo delicious and our # of visitors continues to grow, we are hoping to collect MANY MORE COOKIES this year! Please consider sending in a batch of your favorite cookies. If you do not bake or have a very full schedule, we will cheerfully accept any store-bought donations. Please deliver to CE building by Friday, December 12 th. Thank you in advance!!!

15 Spirit of Christmas Donations December 13 It s time to think about donations for the Look What $20 Can Buy. We need items and gift certificates that will be sold for $20 or a multiple of 20. They will be tagged describing what their purchase will support at Friendship House. If you have a personal relationship with a business (local or otherwise), could you solicit a gift certificate or a new item worth $30 or more from them? We also need donations of new (or like new) items from individuals that are worth $30 or more. When soliciting donations, please let me know, so that two people don t make a request from the same business. Brochures of Friendship House are available in the office for your use when soliciting a donation. All items and gift certificates can be given to Joan Appleby starting now for storage until the event. We are excited about this new idea but we need your help! Any questions call Joan Appleby at

16 Spirit of Christmas - Craft Table December 13 We would like to encourage members of our congregation to donate craft items to be sold at the Spirit of Christmas. We have very many talented individuals in our congregation and have always received a wonderful variety of items. Ellie Gerhart and her "elves" have been busy all summer creating some great gifts and we hope to have a very full table. Items for sale may begin arriving at the Thanksgiving breakfast and any time after that. We encourage you to price your items. Price Tags will be available at the breakfast and at all coffee hours. If you are not able to make anything for the table, please consider donating a few hours to work the table during the Spirit of Christmas. There is a sign-up sheet on the Spirit of Christmas "bulletin board" with 2 hour shifts throughout the day. Shoe Boxes Shoe boxes make the perfect carrying cartons for our homemade soups for the upcoming Spirit of Christmas sales. Please check your closets and bring any you can spare to the Christian Education Building to be used for that purpose. There will be a designated spot to store them when you come for the Thanksgiving Breakfast or any time thereafter until the day of the Spirit celebration (December 13th). Thank you!

17 Christmas Caroling Be sure to mark your calendar for a great evening of Christmas Caroling on Sunday night December 21st! We will meet at the church at 7:00pm and proceed from there walking around Old New Castle and caroling. We will end up at Gene and Carol Mayhew s house (17 E. 5 th Street in New Castle) for refreshments and fellowship (we usually arrive there between 8:00 and 8:30pm). Please join us at the Mayhew s even if you are unable to walk around and carol. Adult Education You are invited and encouraged to join us for our Advent and Christmas Bible study at 9:30 a.m. on Sunday. Our course for November 30 through January 4 will be Celebrating Christmas: Scripture and Culture in Conversation. Come and see why we do what we do!

18 Each Sunday of Advent White Gifts The Deacons will collect donations of non-perishable food for the local New Castle food cupboard operated by St. Vincent DePaul Society at St. Peter s Catholic Church for hungry people who live in New Castle. The food will be collected each of the four Sundays in Advent, as well as Christmas Eve. Please bring donated breakfast or canned meat and protein items, juice, soup, vegetables, fruit or even dessert items and place them in the marked box in the narthex of the Meeting House. The term White Gifts referred to the white wrapping paper around each donated can or box. We no longer wrap individual items. However, our celebration of the hope, love, joy, and anticipation of Christ in our lives will wrap each donation with the sparkling glory of God s working presence in our midst. 19 Ralph Johnson Memorial Cookie Bake On Sunday, December 21st we will be serving breakfast at the 8th and Shipley Friendship House location. For the past two years we have baked cookies and bagged them for the men, women and children who attend the Sunday breakfast program to recognize Ralph's enduring commitment to mission. We will need cookies to fill 125 sandwich size zip lock baggies to distribute on this day. If you are willing to bake or buy cookies for this project, please have your cookies in the CE building kitchen by Friday, December 19th. Anyone interested in helping to "bag" the cookies can come to the church kitchen on Friday evening from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Light refreshments will be served. There will be a sign up sheet posted after the Spirit of Christmas celebration. Thank you for your support.
