Opening Prayer: God, when I think of the times I ve misused your name, I blush with shame. All around me I hear your names used at the silliest times when people are angry or excited or amused. But you don t think it s so silly. It s your name. Dear Jesus forgive me for the times I ve fallen into that sin. Help me to know you better so that I use your name in a way that shows my love for you, not my disinterest, disrespect or disobedience. Teach me more about you through your Word and get into my heart so that I really want to live for you, not just on Sunday, but every day of my life. Help me with this study today. We pray believing that you will help us. Amen. Click to next slide 1

What does God want to impress on us? That His name is important; that our love for Him will be evident in how we use His name. 2

What s is God s Name? That s a good question to consider. Names are important. Imagine if no one had a name... Instead of using a person s name you would have to describe the person. A cell phone conversation might go like this: This is the 14-year-old male student, who is 5 10, has long, fair hair, blue eyes, a big nose, and is good at playing the drums. To whom am I speaking? Names are shortcuts. They often help us describe or identify people. God has given us His name. God s name stands for everything God is and everything God does. God s name is different from all other names because God is holy, or set apart as the only perfect being. By revealing His Name in His Word God makes it possible for us to know him, to have a personal relationship with Him, to communicate with Him, and to worship Him. How we use God s Name how we treat God s name indicates our attitude toward Him. So what does God reveal about our use of His name in the Word? 3

Youth reads this passage. God holds us accountable for how we use His name. To misuse God s name we can understand that we use it thoughtlessly, disrespectfully, or carelessly as if God and His name were a big ZERO NOTHING! 4

God s name stands for everything He reveals about Himself in His Word and everything He does. 5

6

At the head of the Ten Commandments we have the words: I AM THE LORD YOUR GOD. As God reveals Himself He has the authority to tell us what is right and what is wrong, to say what we should and should not be, think, feel, say, or do. What does the Lord our God not want us to do? 9 Parent reads this verse. To curse means to call on God to bring evil on someone, to say something bad or disrespectful about God. Blasphemy means to speak evil of God. Illustration: How many hammers are going to end up in hell? Foolish observation? No what words or expressions come flying out of people s mouths when they smash their thumbs with a hammer? God, dammit, they howl. How silly can you get asking Almighty God to damn a hammer. And how sinful to do so! Yet how much more horrible and wicked for an individual to wish that ultimate evil on someone: to ask God to damn another person to an eternity in hell. 9

Scan 1 Samuel 17. It is the account of young David and the champion of the Philistines a giant named Goliath. If possible tell this bible story in your own words of how the children of Israel were engaged in a battle with the Philistines. A practice used on occasion was to have a representative or champion from each side fight it out to death. David, a son of Jesse, came out to the battlefield to see how his brothers were faring and bring back evidence they were in good health. However, young David, a shepherd, heard about the taunting of Goliath. David voices his confidence and trust in the Lord because Goliath has defied and defiled the armies of the living God.. King Saul offers his armor as protection but David discards it as being cumbersome. David approaches Goliath with his weapon a slingshot and five stones. 11

Scan these verses but take note of Verse 43 and 45. Goliath cursed David. But Goliath had gone a step farther defying or mocking, making fun of the true God of Israel the Lord God Almighty. Goliath had blasphemed and spoken evil of the one true God David represented. 15

Youth reads this section. At his birthday party King Herod did a foolish thing. Since he was pleased by the entertainment of the daughter of Herodias he made a promise to reward her. Then he went a step farther. He added an oath to impress everyone that he had the power to reward her. Then came the unexpected request the daughter asked for the head of John the Baptist. John the Baptist had called Herod to repentance because of his adulterous marriage. To save face and because of his oath Herod carried through with his promise. The point of this incident is that Pilate swore or took an unnecessary oath to impress others of what he had the power to do. Click to the next slide. 19

Slide to reinforce the ways people misuse God s name. To swear means to call on God to witness the truth of what we are saying. Sometimes it is necessary to tell the truth about important matters (for example: in court). But we should not use God s name to swear in unimportant matters (for example: by using his name simply as an exclamation, or for emphasis). 21

Scan these verses. King Saul knew he was outnumbered by the Philistines. The Bible tells us Terror filled his heart. (vs. 5) Saul had inquired of the Lord but there was no answer. He grew impatient and took matters into his own hands. He would consult a medium, someone who could connect him with the spirits of the dead. (Other words to describe this practice are witchcraft, spiritism, occult, necromancy.) This was outlawed and Saul himself had advocated the practice. (necromancy is the conjuring up of the spirits of the dead for purposes of magically revealing the future) In his panic Saul was led to a medium at Endor. She went through her hocus-pocus or ritual and called up an old man wearing a robe (vs. 14). Saul recognized the spirit as the prophet Samuel. Then the woman realized she was dealing with the king and her life was at risk. Samuel confirms the truth that the Kingdom of Israel was being torn from Saul s hands he would lose his power and influence to David. Saul s army would be defeated by the Philistines. 22

22

Continue to scan these verses. Saul is further deflated by this news, collapses and refuses to eat. Finally after much encouragement by others Saul eats and returns to camp. 23

Have youth record this note. Turning to superstitution means that we are looking to trust something other than God to understand our life and life around us. This are many, many examples ouija boards, mediums, wiccam or worship of Satan, superstitions as broken mirrors, black cats, fortune cookies, etc. There is so much that we may become somewhat insensitive to this area. Do not take these issues too lightly. Do take a moment to underscore with your youth that these are serious issues and warrant parental concern. 24

Scan these verses. Jesus separates His disciples from the tradition of the elders. The religious leaders interpreted and expanded the Law often in a way that enabled a person to break a commandment (Jesus cites the 4 th Commandment) because we are following our tradition. So in vs. 5-6 a son claiming to give a gift to God does not provide support to his parents. So following the tradition of the elders this son nullifies or voids God s command. So bottom line religious leaders were using God s name as expressed in their traditions to make people practice something God did not command here a breaking of the 4 th Commandment and give it a context of being legal or correct. Thus there tradition becomes a false teaching or rules taught by men. 25

Have youth record this note. 26

Scan vs in the account of early believers Ananias and Sapphira. They claim to have sold a piece of property for a certain sum of money. They kept some of the money for themselves but misled their fellow believers as to how much they sold the property for. They were lying and deceiving by God name to make their action look good. Another word we have for this is hypocrisy. They were pretending to make this action on their part look good. Both Ananias and Sapphira die for standing behind their lies. 27

What does God want to see as we use His name? 29

Youth read this Bible verse. The Lord wants to call on Him at all times and especially in the day of trouble. The Lord wants us to use His name in prayer. 30

Summary of 2 nd Commandment. 37

Why do we want to use God s name in the correct way? What is our motivation? 38

Parent and youth read this verse. We use God s name we do not want to forget all his benefits all the blessings spiritual and material at the hand of our gracious God. He forgives our sins to establish we are saved and in a right relationship with Him. God did this because He loved us and He wants us to love Him and His holy name. He wants others to hear what He in love did for them. 39

The Third Commandment: Remember the Sabbath Day by keeping it holy. What does this mean? We should fear and love God that we do not despise preaching and his Word, but regard it as holy and gladly hear and learn it. 41

Sabbath is a Hebrew word meaning rest. This word takes us back to creation when we read in Genesis 2:3 God rested from all the work of creating that he had done. God ceased from His work He had carried out. It was good. He could look back and admire His wonderful creation in which He placed Adam and Eve. Have youth record the word: rest. In keeping with this pattern God established at creation God set apart one day in the week for divine purposes. We want to be mindful of how great He is. He has created us and given us our life. He has saved us and take away all our sins through His Son, Jesus. He has given us faith a faith He started for many of us in our Baptism. Thus He gives us this command. God commanded his people in the Old Testament to keep Saturday as their Sabbath or holy day. The Sabbath was set apart for him. The Sabbath also served as a reminder that the Messiah would come and give us true rest. God commands his New Testament people to worship him. Because Jesus has come as God promised we are set free from the obligation of the Old Covenant. We want to heed His command to worship for all God has done. In our freedom we have chosen Sunday because this is the day Jesus rose from the dead this is the day the Holy Spirit was poured out on the New Testament Church. Have youth record the note. 42

Therefore as we hear God s command: Remember the Sabbath Day by keeping it holy. we understand That it is His will for our lives that we: set apart time for Him, the Word which reveals God to us, and worship of God Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Click to the next slide. 43

Youth reads this passage. Jesus invites us to come to him because so easily we get stressed out by the demands and pressures of living. We become weary and burdened. In moments of weakness we give in to sin and wickedness. Jesus offers us rest (spiritual rest), namely, the forgiveness of sins. This forgiveness is the rest we need for our souls. 44

Have youth record this note. Click to the next slide. 45

Parent reads this Bible verse. WE show our relationship to God by our desire to hear His Word to hear God speak to our hearts and minds. 46

Youth reads this verse. We rejoice we delight to worship and enter God s House to hear God s Word. The word: worship means worth-ship. God has given us His name in our Baptism and we delight to give Him honor, thanks, and praise. 47

Youth records this note. 48

Parent reads this passage. God s people could look at this past and see how easy it was to forgot God and his gifts and the great things He had done. Therefore recommitted themselves to get together with fellow believers, they encouraged one another to worship. They encouraged one another mindful that Jesus promised He would return on the Last Day the Day of Judgment. 49

Have youth record this note. Click to the next slide. 50

Youth reads this passage. We need to remind ourselves that God expects us to worship He is also concerned with the attitude we have Toward Him in worship. We come with the help of the Holy Spirit with an attitude of gladness or as noted Earlier: rejoicing. 51

Have youth record this note. 52

Slide provides summary of this commandment. 53

AS in the 2 nd Commandment, so in the 3 rd Commandment Why do God s children love to receive God s Word and celebrate God s Day? What is our motivation? 54

Have youth record this note. We truly treasure the gift of spiritual rest we have in Jesus. 55

Youth reads this passage. Youth is a time of growing there is also spiritual growing. We grow to appreciate the awesome grace of God we see His love more clearly in the created world, in His plan of salvation for us and for all. There is much more for us to learn as we go to the Word. 56

Have youth record this note. 57

Parent reads this passage. WE are not only concerned about ourselves we are concerned for one another. God has given His Word as we note in the 2 nd Commandment to witness to others. God has given His Word as we see in the 3 rd Commandment so that we can serve others teaching our children; teaching others about the great grace of God that is available only in the Word. We have an other mindset how can I help others starting with my own children in worship. 58

Youth records these 2 notes. 59

Summary of what we have learned. 60

We need to continue to teach God s Word. One issue is the right day for worship. The Colossians passage will be on the next slide. 61

Parent and youth read Bible verse together. This Bible passage provides 2 perspectives -- there is the perspective of the Old Testament command to worship or to keep the Sabbath. Saturday was the holy day for the children of Israel. The Israelites were to set this day apart for the Lord God. It was a sign of keeping the Old Covenant or agreement. God s people rested. God s people worshipped. God s people remember the great things He had done. The Colossians passage adds one more thought these are a shadow of the things that were to come. The Sabbath was also a foreshadowing of something even greater to come THE SAVIOR OR MESSIAH. The Savior would bring the blessing of spiritual rest. The reality, however, is found in Christ. Because Christ has come we in freedom have chosen Sunday to keep this command to worship. As New Testament believers we need a regular time and opportunity to worship God together. Each Sunday is a reminder that Jesus has risen from the dead and is present when we worship. We want to show the world how great God is and that we are his people. Special festivals teach us about the great works God has done to save us. 62

Look at the next slide as it depicts the bigger picture of this command to worship. * We want to instill a genuine respect for God, His Word, His Day as we worship. We do not want to distract, be distracted, or do things that distract others in worship. * We are exploring ways via sermon summaries, PowerPoint, etc. as tools to support our proclamation of God s message. Not to be overlooked is the prayer of the Child of God to hear His Word with a listening heart. * We with the help of our Board of Worship we want to provide variety but also avail ourselves to the rich heritage we have as Lutherans in worship. 63

Have your youth complete the Assignment for Next Week. We have finished the First Table of the Law: LOVE FOR GOD in this third unit. Have you established a pattern with your son or daughter? It s a challenge given our busy lives and then add: Thanksgiving! What do you feel needs to be improved? Have we allowed adequate time? Would it be helpful to know from other parents what works? What doesn t? Hopefully I can make an inquiry of you and get some feedback. Does your son/daughter have a clear understanding of your expectations? Of my expectations? With the Lord s help offer each other encouragement. As parent I ask you and want to encourage you to check his/her work with your answer key and sign off or initial that you have checked over the assignment. When your youth makes a mistake this can be a teaching moment to help him or her see what they did was incorrect or not the most correct answer. What a blessing as we pass His Word on to our youth we have more influence on them then we sometimes realize. Plan to take time to listen to his/her memory work. Get into a pattern or routine and do your best to hold to it. Offer encouragement. Perhaps writing out the memory work will help with retention. We have both short-term and long-term memory. Our goal is to get these VIP passages into their long term memory. Try to find an approach that works best. Feel free to have some give and take with me if you have some difficulty in any area. While Wednesday, December 8 th, is a few weeks away I ask you to encourage your son or daughter to start preparing for it. Questions: Please me at: pastort@goodshep.com Phone: The same is true for your youth. Have them get in touch with me. 66
