3 Warm Up (Part II) After a year in captivity /dome in Hawaii that simulates being on Mars, you pass the final test, and you are about to set foot (or by rocket ship) on your way to outer space. What do you bring? How do you prepare? How do you say goodbye to people (family, friends, teachers)? Make a list (of at least 5 things) that you will do before you leave on your journey to Mars (to your knowledge, you will be spending the rest of your life on Mars). You can use the same sheet of paper that you completed the first warm-up. (Aug 31 at 3:40)

4 What did you decide to do? Talk with a partner (or two) and explain what you wrote down? What will you do and how will you complete these things before you travel to Mars? Lastly, would you want to do this? Would you be willing to travel to Mars? Why or why not?

6 Why did the English settle here? The first permanent English settlement in North America was Jamestown - Founded in 1607 by the Virginia Company of London Purpose: economic opportunity (to make money) - Settlers (all men) were looking for gold and riches Settlers weren t planning to stay in the New World Would you have gone???

13 All is NOT WELL in Jamestown Here s what really happened No one wanted to work--too busy looking for gold Location made people sick (why do you think this?) John Smith took charge in winter of 1607 Swamps, mosquitoes, dirty water Forced men to work He who does not work, shall not eat Starving Time (winter 1609)--all but 60 settlers died before spring

14 Let s take a look at the Starving Time Your task: Read Smith s account of the Starving Time Then we will compare his writing to the video clips What were conditions like in Jamestown? How did the settlers survive? If you were a Powhatan, would you have helped the settlers? Why or why not? (Jane) (1:40)

Was there something in the video clips was the inaccurate?) 1640s - Virginia House of Burgesses established First elected assembly in the New World

16 Jamestown Relationships Powhatan Indians were native to the region Colonists would take food and land, Natives would raid colonist settlements Marriage between Rolfe and Pocahontas helps for some time Opecancaunoh s War - surprise attack on many colonial outposts Killed 300+ settlers (possibly John Rolfe too)

18 New England: Plymouth & Mass. Bay Colonies Life in Plymouth Colony The early New England Colonies were settled by Puritans seeking freedom from religious persecution in Europe Puritans were very religious - often intolerant of those who didn t follow their religion Does this strike you as IRONIC in any way?? Why?

19 Plymouth Rock? Pilgrims (a group of Puritans) arrive at Plymouth (Massachusetts) Wrote the Mayflower Compact There was no government in the area so they created their own Formed a: covenant community Brought their families, planned to stay forever How is this different than Jamestown???

20 Who came to Jamestown vs. Plymouth?? Your task: Read through and analyze the passenger lists to Jamestown and Plymouth Fill out the graphic organizer on the back of the lists to compare the passengers traveling to these two different regions

21 Back to New England more Puritans came to Mass. Bay John Winthrop (leader) wanted to create a City on a Hill - set an example for the rest of the world of godly living Town Meeting - a form of direct democracy All men of the town discuss and vote on issues

23 Remember New England? One problem - religious dissent Puritans wanted the freedom to practice their religion but did not want others to practice a different religion People who went against Puritan teachings or challenged their ideas about church and government were punished Roger Williams and Anne Hutchinson were dissenters - banished from Massachusetts, started a new colony of Rhode Island & Connecticut

24 Location, Location, Location The settlers moved into three different areas for various reasons New England Colonies - seeking freedom from religious persecution Southern Colonies - seeking economic opportunities Middle Colonies - seeking both religious freedom and economic opportunity

25 Southern Colonies Settled by people seeking economic opportunity Cavaliers - English nobility who received large land grants in eastern Virginia from the King of England Indentured servants - poor immigrants who agreed to work for 4-7 years in exchange for their passage to the New World Remember back to last class When did we switch to slave labor and the slave trade??

26 Southern Colonies Other poor immigrants became small farmers or artisans Settled in the Shenandoah Valley or western Virginia (not yet West Virginia!!!) Bacon s Rebellion Frontier settlers wanted support from the Royal Governor against the Native Americans He refused and the rebellion became violent Showed differences between wealthy landowners and poor frontier settlers

27 Middle Colonies Seeking religious freedom and economic opportunity Settled mainly by English, Dutch, and German-speaking immigrants More tolerance and diversity in language, religion, nationality
