Thanksgiving is the season that reminds us to take time to reflect upon our blessings and give thanks to the Lord, who is the one responsible for these blessings. Paul challenged us to be thankful in every situation in life (1 Thessalonians 5:17-18). 4 IN SP IRATION Page 4 NEWS FROM THE WORSHIP PASTOR Do you want to know God's Will? Colossians 1:9-14 "We continually ask God to fill you with the knowledge of his will through all the wisdom and understanding that the Spirit gives." Col 1:9b The one thing Paul asks for is that the Colossians might come to understand God's will. This is the important thing to Paul. He knows that if they begin to understand the will of God, everything good that he desires for them will follow. Thus, the chief aim of a believer's life ought to be to know God's will. Here is where many young Christians go astray. They think the will of God is an itinerary they must discover: where God wants them to go, and what God wants them to do. Most of their prayers are addressed with those thoughts in mind. What should I do today? Where should I go? Whom should I marry? But knowing God's will is about much more than simply knowing what to do, it begins with knowing who we are. Have you ever asked someone who upset you, Who do you think you are, anyway? We instinctively know that offensive behavior is a result of who we think we are. That is why such challenges are given. God, too, knows that. The glory of the good news is that he has made us into something different than what we once were. Therefore the primary course in the curriculum of the Spirit is to learn what God has made you to be. You no longer belong to yourself, so you are no longer to live for yourself. Your will, your pleasure, your comfort are no longer to be primary in your life, but what God calls you to be and what he has made you to be. The more you understand who you now are, and what God has done to make you that, the more your behavior will automatically change and you will do the things that please him. Where do we find that out? Paul goes on to say: through all spiritual wisdom and understanding. There are two things that enable us to discover the will of God. The first is spiritual wisdom. This is wisdom that comes from the Spirit, not from the natural mind of man. That is what Christians need to discover: what God thinks about life. That is reality. If you want to be realistic, then read and study your Bible to discover how God looks at things. Everything else is fantasy. If you want to live realistically, learn spiritual wisdom, the wisdom of God. The second thing necessary to discover the will of God is understanding. That is the application of the wisdom you are learning to the specific circumstance of life. Understanding is a clear vision of what needs to be done. Some are struggling with problems and don't know what to do. The first thing to do is to understand how God sees your problem and what he says about it in his word. Then there will come, as you pray and seek his face, a clear vision of what needs to be done. What steps to take or not to take. These are not natural abilities. They are given by the Spirit, and therefore possible to all believers. So when you open the Bible, pray that God will help you to understand what it says. 5 Page 5 2 CORINTHIANS 8:7 PRAYER As we look forward to many things about November, it can be easy to anticipate Thanksgiving the most. Thanksgiving, the holiday and being more thankful, are two things that go well together. The Pilgrims lived out their faith in Christ in ways that left powerful examples and a legacy. Everything I ve read about their spiritual strength has humbled and challenged me and my family. The Pilgrim s, who of course, had a key role in the Christian beginnings of our nation, read their Bible and knew much of God s promises before they started off on their voyage. A journey that would lead to a new land where they would, at times, feel joy and wonder, yet they would also become wellacquainted with fear, a lack of protection, disease and RECYCLING mal-nourishment, and loss. They must have been encouraged by verses like: 2 Corinthians 6:4 Rather, as servants of God we commend ourselves in every way; in great endurance; in troubles, hardships, and distresses. Philippians 4:19 But my God shall supply all your needs, according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus. Deuteronomy 31:8 The Lord Himself goes before you and will be with you, He will never leave you now forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged. Dietrich Bonhoeffer said: Gratitude changes the pangs of memory into a tranquil joy. Though these people of faith were hit with trials before and after coming to America, they embraced the Bible s message and it affected how they lived. I ve loved learning that the Pilgrim s sang psalms and spiritual songs. Psalm 95:1-2 says: O come, let us sing unto the Lord: let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation. Let us come before His presence with thanksgiving, and make a joyful noise unto him with psalms. God gives us all so many blessings. Can we try to pray a bit more often than we have been? Can we thank our Lord Jesus for the great examples others are for us? Maybe we can let people know we are thankful for something they re doing that sets a good example for us. Let s try those simple but important things. 6 We are the Student Ministry of Sandy Plains Baptist Church. IN SP IRATION STUDENT MINISTRIES Page 6 We are about joining our minds with the mind of God. The question over to the right is the question we are asking students to ask themselves as they go We are about denying ourselves and lifting up Christ. about their day to day lives. This question is a part of our study we are doing on Wednesday nights. One of We are about submitting our will to the will of God. We are about merging heart, soul, strength and mind into one dedicated purpose: to love God and to love others. We are about becoming one in Spirit with other Christ followers. the key point that came out in a recent session was this: When nonbelievers see us as lifeless, unchanged, empty, or abrasive, they not only wonder why our lives look just like theirs, they may also conclude that God doesn t exist. At all. When people see us, what do they see? When people see us, who do they see? Do they see someone who is different from the world around them? Do they see someone who can make a loving but firm stand on an issue? Do they see someone who is able to defend in a logical and reasonable way what they believe? Do they see Jesus? These are just a few of the questions raised in our study. If you are interested in taking a deeper look at what the Gospel according to You looks like, I would recommend getting a copy of the book The Fi5th Gospel, by Bobby Conway. It would almost be like you were a part of our youth group! Glad to have you! Gary McEntire We are about becoming one with the One. We are about: the FUSION Please note that our BIG EVENT activity that was scheduled for December has been moved to January due to a scheduling change with the Christmas Choir Program.
