Welcome

Welcome I would like to greet you on behalf of our entire church family. Since many of us have such varied spiritual backgrounds, we have put together this booklet in the hope of answering some questions you may have about Paso Robles Community Church (what we affectionately call PRCC ). Below I ve listed four primary goals that are the driving force behind our efforts as a church family. 1. Our goal for us as individuals is to emphasize a life of deepening intimacy with Jesus Christ. To know the love of Christ - that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God, as the Apostle Paul prays in Ephesians 3: Our goal for activities is patterned after the simple program of the first Christians. In Acts 2:42 we were told they devoted themselves to the apostles teaching and to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. 3. Our goal for activities outside our church family is centered upon Jesus commission that as a result of the empowering of the Holy Spirit, we will be witnesses (of Jesus) in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth (Acts 1:8). 4. Overarching these goals is a sincere desire in and by God s grace to do all because of love, knowing that whatever we do without love profits nothing (1 Corinthians 13:1-3). One other thing I would like you to know is that none of these things are being done perfectly. In a world where promises and words often outdistance reality, we have to admit we are moving forward but certainly have not arrived. My prayer is that if God places it within you to be a part of what He has called us to be as a church, you will be led to those areas where you can most effectively come to know Jesus and make him known. I trust and pray that God s grace and love through Jesus Christ will be your evergrowing experience. In His Grace, Pastor Shawn Penn Paso Robles Community Church

Becoming a Christian Your decision about Jesus Christ is the single most important decision that you will ever make. Wy do we say that? Well, consider the following statements from the Bible. Jesus says: I am the way, the truth, and the life. No man comes to the Father but by Me. 1 The Apostle John declares, God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life. 2 If it s true Jesus and what He did for us on the cross is the only way to the Heavenly Father and eternal life, it makes your response to Jesus Christ something that impacts your life for eternity. With that in mind, please consider the following key steps to receiving Jesus Christ and the eternal life He offers with the Heavenly Father: 1. Recognize that you, along with the whole human race, have sinned. The Bible says that all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God. 3 We have all missed the mark of God s intention for us as individuals. Through our own sins we have contributed to a world that has not truly loved God or loved our neighbors as ourselves Turn from sin to the Forgiver of all sin. In a message by the Apostle Paul speaking to the philosophers of Athens, he says, God is now commanding all people everywhere to repent. 5 To repent means to turn away from sin to Jesus Christ. We are called upon to turn to Jesus because He alone has the power to forgive all sins. He is able to forgive our sins first because He paid our penalty for sin for us when He died in our place upon the cross. Secondly, being declared to be God who became a man, He has the right to forgive sins committed against God. 3. By faith, receive Jesus Christ. When a person admits their need for a restored relationship with God and the forgiveness of their sins, the next logical step is to accept God s solution. By putting faith in what Jesus did for you on the cross, God applies complete forgiveness and restoration to your life. 6 Not only that, but Jesus, by His Spirit, causes you to be born again. 7 This refers to a new and eternal life that enters anyone who accepts Jesus. 4. Be filled with the Holy Spirit. This is a vital aspect of the Christian life. The empowering of the Holy Spirit enables a believer to effectively tell others about Jesus, receive spiritual gifts, and live a life that expresses the nature of God. Please take the time to review the following Scripture that will describe a Believer s relationship to the empowering Holy Spirit. After doing so, please be open to all God has for you. Review Acts 1:5-8, 2:4, 8:8-9, 9:17-18, 19:2-6; 1 Corinthians 12:8-10; Galatians 5: Begin to follow Jesus. Not only does Jesus Christ have a solution for your past, but also for your future. You will discover that future as you begin to follow in the path of the life that Jesus has left us in His Word, the Bible Be Baptized. If you have not yet accepted Jesus Christ and the forgiveness and eternal life He brings, we encourage you to do so today. If you make a decision for Christ, please follow that up by beginning to read the New Testament and seeking out a good Bible-believing church. If we can be of any help to you, please don t hesitate to contact us here at PRCC. We have some helpful material for new Christians that we are happy to make available to you. footnotes: 1. John 14:6. 2. John 3:16 3. Romans 3:23 4. Matthew 22:37-39; Mark 12:29-31; Luke 10: Acts 17: Corinthians 5: John 3: John 8:32; Matthew 16:24

About Our Church Q: How do people join PRCC? A: Our formal membership procedure is this: anyone who has accepted Jesus Christ is already a member of the Body of Christ and this union with Jesus will create a desire in an individual to connect and participate in the life of a local congregation (the local expression of the universal Body of Christ). If you desire to participate in the life of PRCC, we ask that you download and read our PRCC Servant Staff Covenant in which we outline our conviction that a participant in the local church is one who has given their life to Jesus Christ; who will attend PRCC consistently, who act upon the Word as it is taught, are sharing in the financial responsibility of the church through tithes and offerings, and who are sharing the spiritual gifts God has given them with others in the fellowship as and when God leads them by His Holy Spirit. If you are in agreement with this, we ask you meet with our Pastor and affirm your decision and formally join the PRCC family. Q: What is your Church Government? A: Simple. The Pastor is accountable to God to give himself to prayer and to the teaching of the Word (Acts 6:4), so as to lead the church toward a life that is pleasing to the Head Shepherd of the Sheep, Jesus Christ. The Pastor is also accountable to and meets regularly with our Governing Board of Trustees, to pray over and discuss those means that will best serve the goals of the church as stated in Acts 1:8, 2:42, and 2 Corinthians 3:18. A full copy of our Constitution and Bylaws is available in our Servant Staff Handbook or in the office. Q: How do new ministries get started at PRCC? A: We believe that Jesus is the Head of the Church and He is the one who builds the church. Consequently, we re always on the lookout to see who God is bringing into our family and listening for what God may be asking us to do. If you think God is asking you to participate in a ministry or even start a ministry, simply contact the church office and request a New Ministry Application Packet. This packet contains a simple and painless evaluation of the ministry you believe God is asking you to start; ensures the church isn t duplicating ministries; and walks you through a very strategic prayer-filled process that prepares all of us for the work God may be initiating through you What We Believe The whole Bible is our creed. Therefore, any effort to define what we believe necessitates a desire to emphasize the whole Word of God as the source of our core beliefs. Furthermore, it seems unwise to be owned by the labels of much of Christianity, whether it s Fundamentalism, Pentecostal, Calvinism, Arminianism, Charismatic, Dispensational, Reformed, etc. It s unrealistic to think that any individual, manmade system of beliefs is completely error free, or conversely, without merit at all. It is therefore our sincere desire to seek to teach the Bible; be true to its original languages; and be respectful to the historical context, the context of each passage, and the accepted normal use of language (i.e. being able to discern the difference between a parable and a

proverb, a prophecy and an historical account, etc.). We trust that this will enable us to understand the intended meaning and truth that is to be found in God s inspired word. Our nonnegotiable, core beliefs which transcend labels are: We believe in the inspiration of the Bible; in God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit; in the virgin birth of Jesus. We believe in Jesus Christ s blood atonement that provides forgiveness for sins and delivers us from the judgment for sin that awaits all humanity. We believe in His bodily resurrection and second return to establish His Kingdom upon the earth, followed by the millennial reign of Jesus Christ after which He will create a new heaven and a new earth. (A more complete expression of these beliefs can be found in our Servant Staff Handbook or under What We Believe on our website.) Teaching The Apostle Paul was able to say to the Ephesian Christians, For I have not hesitated to proclaim to you the whole will of God (Acts 20:27). That is what we seek to be able to say to those whom God has placed among us. Our primary teaching program aims to take our church through each book in the Bible. We do this during our Sunday morning service and online teaching. To cover certain subjects in more depth, we will offer topical Bible classes as well as home groups designed to explore God s word in a discussion formate. Most recently, we have partnered with RightNow Media to offer a Netflix-style of online video-teaching library free to our congregation. If you d like to receive access to this web-service, please contact the church office. We strongly believe in what Paul the Apostle declared to Timothy when he said: All Scripture is Godbreathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work (2 Timothy 3:16-17). Fellowship Fellowship in Greek is koinonia and carries the idea of sharing or participating as companions in each other s lives. Many of the personal and social ills in our society today relate to the breakdown of healthy, meaningful relationships. Therefore, one of the goals in a church must be to help restore fellowship to its proper place in our lives. Of course, we hope that a certain level of fellowship occurs during our main worship gatherings, however, due to the size of those meetings, it s necessary to become involved in smaller groups to develop more intimate relationships with one another. The following opportunities are available: Small Groups - meeting in homes to study the Bible and share each other s understanding and personal application of the Bible. We also pray for one another and make ourselves available to serve each other as the Lord leads. Men s & Women s Groups - these meet to personally apply the scriptures to our lives and to assist each other in being accountable to the things that God is doing in them. One-on-One - these are opportunities woman-to-woman and man-to-man. The meetings provide discipleship through the scriptures and in areas of life that don t lend themselves to group discussions.

Retreats - we currently offer two retreats per year (one for men, one for women) to share with others and target key needs in our individual walks with Christ. In addition, the women of the church typically offer a one-day Ladies Tea and in November the church hosts a Family Thanksgiving for the members of the church family. Breaking Bread Breaking bread was a term used by the early church to refer to the gathering together of believers to share a meal as well as to remember the Lord by taking communion. Over the centuries these two events have been culturally separated, but nonetheless, both are very important. Jesus said to take communion as often as you will (1 Corinthians 11:23-26). We have chosen to celebrate communion as a church family at the first Sunday Service of each month and during special services throughout the year (e.g. Good Friday). However, it is not uncommon for many of the small groups to share in communion as they feel led by the Lord. Who is allowed to take communion? Since the purpose is to remember what Jesus Christ s death has done for us, it seems anyone who has a sincere faith in Jesus Christ may partake (2 Corinthians 11:24-26). However, we are warned by Paul not to take communion in an unworthy manner. This refers to people who participate in communion as a ritual but live a life that contradicts the beliefs represented by communion. Prayer To be able through prayer to access the very presence of God is one of the great privileges that resulted from what Jesus did for us by His death and resurrection. One form of prayer is worship, which communicates our love and appreciation to God. Therefore, we often open our meetings with a time of singing. But we trust it is much more than just singing. Our desire is to offer up to God a sacrifice of praise (Hebrews 13:15) and to worship him in spirit and truth (John 4:23). We know that various styles of worship exist within the Body of Christ. We trust that our style is an effective tool in bringing our expression of love to God. It is our desire that our music is a vehicle of our worship and not an end in itself. Our intention is to bring attention to God rather than the musicians or individuals in the congregation. No doubt our taste in music styles varies greatly, but we trust that our desire to express worship will be stronger than these varied tastes. You will find that various forms of prayer will undoubtedly be incorporated into just about everything we do. This is because we recognize our utter need for God s divine intervention in all areas of our lives. We set aside periodic weekends to provide an opportunity to participate in our 24 hours-a-day prayer ministry (e.g. Prayer vigil leading up to Easter). In addition, we collect prayer requests each Sunday and distribute those requests to our Prayer Team who prays for them throughout the week and a Prayer Team who meets Thursday mornings at the church to pray for those needs to. In addition, requests for prayer can be submitted via our website and those requests will be sent immediately to the Prayer Teams too.

Witnesses for Jesus Christ To be a witness for Christ is to make the wonder of Jesus and His gospel understood in a world that is under the sway of spiritual darkness. Jesus made it clear that this can only be accomplished by and through the power of the Holy Spirit. Therefore, we seek to emphasize a dependency upon the Holy Spirit rather than man s programs and techniques. It has been our experience that those who are healthy sheep, living by the nurturing of the scriptures and the power of the Holy Spirit, beget more sheep. The people in our lives will come under the life-changing influence of what God is doing in and through believers who are spiritually growing and are in love with Jesus. In addition to being witnesses of Jesus to those who we naturally come into contact with, God at times leads us to reach out beyond those relationships to people we normally would never meet. This may be through concerts, street evangelism, and service project in our community. God has also given us a desire to reach beyond our national borders. To date, we support missionaries in Uganda and Venezuela. Our hope is in the near future to begin sending short-term teams to support these missionaries in a broad range of activities.
