Shipps ARC Biological Information Dr. Howard Fenimore Shipps was a Methodist pastor and a professor at Asbury Theological Seminary. He was born on May 7, 1903 in New Jersey. In 1922, he began attending Asbury College, where he graduated in After his graduation, he was the pastor of several churches in the New Jersey Conference of the Methodist Church, including in Elmer, Delanco, Silberton, and Absecon, N.J. He received his Th.B in 1929 and a Th.M in 1932 from Princeton Theological Seminary. He also received a doctorate in Sacred Theology in 1955 from Temple University School of Theology in Dr. Shipps married Ruth Perkins in They had one daughter, Sara Beth Shipps McClelland and seven grandchildren. While pastoring in New Jersey, Shipps was very active in his conference. His activities included serving both as executive secretary and president of the New Jersey Conference Board of Evangelism and president of the Fletcher Grove Camp Meeting Association and Youth Conference. Shipps frequently spoke at Holiness Movement functions and camp meetings. Dr. Shipps was a visiting professor of church history at Asbury Theological Seminary in He became a full-time faculty member in 1953 and retired from teaching in During his time at Asbury, Shipps served as chair for the Church History and Missions department as well as the Director of Admissions (1963). During his sabbaticals from the seminary, he spent time in Europe, studying John Wesley and Martin Luther. As well, Shipps developed a friendship with the famed author and monk, Thomas Merton, who was known as Father Louis during his time at the Abbey of Gethsemani. Shipps and Merton corresponded and shared their writings with one another until Merton s untimely death in 1968.

4 Dr. Shipps was an active member of the Wilmore community until his death. He was a member of the Wilmore Methodist Church, the Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels, the Wilmore Book Club, and the Wilmore Lions Club. Howard F. Shipps died in Papers Of Howard F.
