3 BEING/ESSENCE/SUBSTANCE Being: something that exists. God exists in a way that is infinitely greater than our existence. Essence: that which makes something the kind of thing it is. Synonymous with nature (as in human nature or divine nature ) Substance: that which undergirds the accidents, or qualities, of something. God is all substance with no accidents. The 3 terms are used interchangeably to denote the Godhead as one and absolutely simple. They answer the question, what?
4 PERSON In God, person has no universally accepted definition A popular modern definition: mode of subsistence Thomas Aquinas definition: subsistent relation It is not a center of individual self-consciousness. b/c there is only one divine will, knowledge, act, etc. But it is somehow analogical to our concept of person. answers the question who?
5 HYPOSTASIS An instance of a nature sometimes equated with person in discussions of the Trinity answers the question which one?
6 THE TRINITY 3 persons (or hypostases): Father, Son, and Holy Spirit 1 essence (or being, nature, substance): The Divine Nature/ The Trinity There are not 4 things here. There is 1 thing, 1 being. Each person is identical with the Divine Nature in substance, yet distinct from the other persons in relation or emanation. The persons may be distinguished by their relations or their processions/emanations
