Landscapers say that this knits the sod to the soil. The same when a branch is grafted onto a tree: the poultice that joins them at the splice must be kept wet at all times. Water is the stuff that binds the very cells of our bodies together. No wonder religions throughout all times and cultures have used it so prominently. When Jesus stepped into the Jordan for baptism, he knit himself to what had come before him. By going to the Jordan, he made himself one with the people of Israel who had crossed it into their Promised Land. With John the Baptist, Christ wove himself into the prophetic tradition that heralded the coming reign of God. He had become fully human in the waters of Mary s womb, and by partaking in the rite of the baptism of repentance, Jesus identified himself with our sinful, frail humanity. It is through the waters of baptism that Christ continues to graft new members onto his Body, the Church; through these waters we are cleansed from sin and filled with the promise of grace, given our destiny for eternal life. For us, as for Jesus, it is also the waters of baptism that inaugurate our mission to proclaim the Good News. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co.

3 Sunday: Monday: Tuesday: Saturday: Our offices will be closed on Monday, January 19th in Observance of Martin Luther King, Jr. SAINTS AND SPECIAL OBSERVANCES The Baptism of the Lord First Week in Ordinary Time begins St. Hilary St. Anthony TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION In the 1560s, the Council of Trent attempted to standardize the widely variant customs for the pastoral care of the sick and dying. We had inherited a practice called extreme unction, from the Latin words meaning anointing at the point of death. The deeper tradition, however, is about the prayer of faith that will heal and restore the sick person, and is straight from the Letter of James. The Fathers went back to the beginning, and while not discarding the extreme unction name, made a plea for the proper use of this sacrament. As soon as a person is in danger of death from sickness or old age, they reasoned, the time for the sacrament had already arrived. As a result of this desire, the next ritual text for anointing contained an innovation: a rite for visiting the sick that included readings from scripture, psalms, and prayers. Old customs fade slowly, however, and the quality of pastoral care languished for centuries while people delayed the celebration of a consoling and effective sacrament, sometimes missing the opportunity completely. A priest ministering to a dying and unconscious patient alone in a room has never been the desire of the Church. Our tradition is far too rich for this sacrament to be celebrated in such a diminished and ungenerous manner. Rev. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. The Joy of the Gospel : Faith Working Through Love Feast of the Baptism of the Lord You are My Beloved Son! At Jesus' baptism, the voice of God called from the heavens. Each of us is called at our baptism to join the family of God. Through the love that guides our actions we display the faith we have in the Kingdom of the Father. God freely shares his life with us that we might help gather his family to Him. In everything we do we have the opportunity to walk in the will of the Father and glorify his name. May our lives of service to the children of God deepen our faith in God's Kingdom. THIS WEEK AT ST. At the 12:00pm Mass, we will have representatives from scouting units Cub Scout Pack 657 and Boy Scout Troop 500 sponsored by St. Mark the Evangelist to participate in our liturgy. The Boy Scouts of America annually celebrates its founding on February 8 th of each year. The Scout Sunday tradition was started to make people in houses of worship aware of Scouting, and to allow Scouts to live out their "Duty to God" pledged each week. The Scout Law says that a "Scout is Reverent" and the Scouts of all ages promise to do their "Duty to God". These values strengthen youth character in their family, community and faith. We appreciate all the support our young men have received and continue to receive from the parish. Ronald C. This church is in fact a baptistery, and houses the font for the Lateran Basilica, the cathedral of Rome. The Emperor Constantine sponsored its construction in the year 315, and it is therefore the oldest baptistery in the world. It is the model for nearly all later baptisteries, including perhaps the font in your own parish church. Rev. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co.

Balance due: $76,044. Turning our Eyes Toward Heaven More commonly, we find ourselves adrift, unsure of ourselves, with most of what s best in us still frustrated, buried, waiting for a better day. Too many things, it seems, conspire against us living out what s truest and best inside us. We d like to be grounded, be ourselves, have a clear direction in life, be free of compulsions, and live out more our dignity, goodness, and creativity; but too many things push us the opposite way. Ideology, anger, bitterness, envy, restlessness, confusion, moral compromise, and the simple need to get by, all pull us down and we end up giving into various compensations (as substitutes for what we really want) and thus quietly despair of ever carrying our dignity, talents, and solitude at any high level. Why does it happen? The fault is with prayer, or lack of it. We cannot stay steady in a churning sea without a good anchor, cannot avoid giving into compensation unless what s highest in us is given enough expression, and cannot deal with the issues of finitude unless we have some transcendent focus. Unless we are anchored in something beyond the here and now there is a good chance that we will drown in the present moment. Jesus models the kind of prayer we need to cope with a world that goes mad at times and with a heart prone to drink in that madness. The gospels describe Jesus praying in different ways, but sometimes they simply say: He turned his eyes towards heaven! The same expression is used of other great faith-figures Stephen, Paul, the early martyrs and it s used of them at those times when the forces of madness are precisely threatening to kill them. When the world around them is going mad, they turn their eyes towards heaven. To read more about what turning our eyes toward heaven means copy this address into your browser Facebook Society of Our Lady of Guadalupe The mission of our Society is to increase devotion to Our Lady of Guadalupe and protect the unborn child. The Board meets on the first Tuesday of each month at 6pm, and the general meeting follows at 7pm. For more info, contact: Loretta or loretta.charles8@yahoo.com What is the Sacrament of the Sick? Are any among you sick? They should call for the elders of the church and have them pray over them, anointing them with oil in the name of the Lord. The prayer of faith will save the sick, and the Lord will raise them up; and anyone who has committed sins will be forgiven (James 5:14-15) This is the prayer of Christ and His Church for the physical and spiritual health of a person who is ill. Anointing of the Sick is a sacrament for the living. It can help a person grow spiritually, heal physically, and be reassured of God s love and mercy. The Sacrament of the Sick is for any of the following: Those facing surgery, those with an illness, the aged, and anyone who needs God s healing presence in any area of their lives. At one time this sacrament was called Extreme Unction or Last Rites. But today it is celebrated for a person who is seriously ill, for the elderly or those in danger of death to help them achieve spiritual and physical healing. At St. Mark s we have two Communal celebrations of this Sacrament: during Advent and during Lent in the Sanctuary. The Anointing of the Sick is also available on the first Monday of the month after the 6:30pm Mass, on the second Wednesday of the month after the 8:15am Mass, and again on the third Thursday after the 6:30am Mass. Please feel free to call the Church at anytime if you think a family member or friend is asking for this Sacrament. After hours please use our emergency phone number, or during the day call the Parish Office. If you would like to talk about this Sacrament for a loved one please feel free to call me. THANKS TO SO MANY VERY GENEROUS PARISHIONERS at St Mark, no other Parish can match this. Our generosity will be tested once again as we will need $55,000 to build this house. Make your check payable to St. Mark and footnote to Habitat. With other demands for your financial support, I expect it will be a challenge to meet our financial goal this year. We need more parishioners to be a part of this ministry, especially financially. We will need lots of volunteers, as well as, other support such as food and refreshments. For the past four years, we have been blessed with a good committee in place. Effective the first of January, leadership of this ministry is being handed off to Bill and Kathy Faucher. The transition will be smooth as Bill and Kathy have been volunteers for many years. May God Bless us as we try to help our less fortunate brothers and sisters. Weekly Holy Rosary St. Mark s prays the Rosary every Saturday before the 5:00pm Mass. Parishioners are encouraged to come and pray the Mysteries and honor our Mother Mary. The Rosary begins at 4:25pm on Saturday in the Sanctuary and finishes early enough for Mass preparations and announcements. COME PRAY THE ROSARY. The Young Adult Community is a spiritual, service, and social ministry made up of young adults from Holy Trinity, St. Mark and St. Padre Pio. If you are interested in meeting other Catholic young adults, and joining us in fellowship, you can contact us and get involved now! We have monthly meetings, spiritual, social, and service events, and attend other functions in the San Antonio area regularly. You can get on our list by sending a message to yac.satx@gmail.com. You can also check us out on Facebook at groups/yacsa/. If you have any other questions, or would like to talk to someone more about the group, you can contact Amy Calvet at (210) or Nicole Calvet at (210) , by phone or by text.
