4 VICTORIOUS LIVING: WALKING IN AUTHORITY

5 GOAL It is the goal of this series of lessons to inform the student about the authority that has been given to them by Jesus Christ to both live and function according to the standard of life that has been ordained by God.

6 It is tragic to live a life in need, when already in possession of the necessary provisions that one needs. Jesus came so that the people of God might have life and have it more abundantly. This abundant quality of life goes largely unrealized, however, when one fails to both live and function according to the God given authority that is vested in them both by and through our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

7 We begin by defining the terms commonly used for authority. More often than not, the Greek term for Authority is: ἐξουσία exousía; gen. exousías, fem. noun from éxesti (1832), it is permissible, allowed. Permission, authority, right, liberty, power to do something (Acts 26:12). As éxesti denies the presence of a hindrance, it may be used either of the capability or the right to do a certain action. The words éxesti and exousía combine the two ideas of right and might. As far as right, authority, or capability is concerned, it involves ability, power, strength (dúnamis [1411]) as in Matt. 9:8; 28:18.

12 Just as in the case of Jesus, we have authority over the enemy: Luke 9:1 6: Jesus, the source of authority (9:1 6) 1. The men he empowers (9:1 6) a. b. (1) The individuals (9:1a): The twelve apostles. The instructions (9:1b 6) Heal all diseases, and cast out demons (9:1b). (2) Preach God s Kingdom (9:2). (3) Travel fast and light (9:3 6): Don t take a walking stick, a bag, food, or money.

The passing joy (10:17) : They are excited because even the demons submit to them in Jesus name. b. The permanent joy (10:18 20, 23 24): Jesus says there are things even more glorious to rejoice over.

(3) Their earthly privilege (10:23 24): He says Old Testament prophets and kings wanted to see and hear what they have seen and heard.

16 One of the reasons that we have been given authority is in order to Cooperate with God: Colossians 1: Rm 8:17, (24, (37)) I Corinthians 3:9 (5-23) Ephesians 6:12 (10-13)

17 Ultimately, the purpose of authority is to do God s will: John 10:18 Sacrifice; life and limb John 12:31, What to say John 14:31 What you do John 5:27, 30 - Judgement, with enforcement John 14: Word to Works

18 A second purpose of authority is build up the church of God (i.e. Edification): Jesus: Mark 9: Cast out unbelief (24) - Cast out the Unclean spirit (26) (Hebrews 11:6)

20 Thirdly, the purpose of authority is to advance the Kingdom of God (i.e. Edification): Luke 4: Coronation Acts 8:5-8 (also 9-13) Communication Acts 16: Conversion/Controversy Acts 19: Consecration (Matt. 6:24)
