4 BRIEF HISTORY I. INSTITUTE OF THEOLOGY St. Paul s Seminary, founded on 8 June 1921 by the Most Rev. Dr. Augustine Faisandier S.J., the then bishop of Tiruchirappalli, has adopted as its motto the words of the Apostle Paul, Set apart for the Gospel of Christ (Rom 1:1). It was entrusted to the Madurai Mission of the Society of Jesus and it obtained the canonical status in In 1938 it was made an inter-diocesan seminary for the dioceses of Tiruchirappalli, Thoothukudi and Madurai. It is now the provincial seminary of the Madurai ecclesiastical province consisting of the following dioceses: Madurai, Tiruchirappalli, Thoothukudi, Kottar, Kuzhithurai, Palayamkottai, Sivagangai and Dindigul. However, it admits candidates from other dioceses of Tamil Nadu, from other parts of India, from various men and women religious congregations and lay people. On 4 December 1975 the theology section of the seminary was affiliated to the Pontifical Urban University, Rome, thereby enabling the students to obtain Baccalaureate in theology (B.Th.). On 29 March 1978 the Jesuits handed over the administration of the seminary to the board of bishops of the Madurai ecclesiastical province. From June 1983 the philosophy section was gradually phased out and in June 1985 St. Paul s became exclusively a theologate. In the last 95 years of its existence it has formed 1662 priests of whom 23 have been made bishops. From June 1991 religious sisters as well as lay persons also are admitted. So far 49 sisters and 18 lay persons have successfully completed B.Th. degree. 914 students have been awarded the B.Th. degree until March On the occasion of its platinum jubilee ( ), a post-graduate programme of studies leading to Master s degree in Theology (M.Th.) was started. So far 27 persons have obtained the M.Th. degree. On 8 February 1997 the Congregation for the Catholic Education elevated the seminary to an institute of theology and was aggregated to the Pontifical Urban University, Rome. With a view to promote contextualized theology which will be more suitable to the Indian and Tamil Nadu context while remaining faithful to 4

5 the magisterium, it was decided by the Board of Administration along with the Staff to request for the deaggregation of St. Paul s Seminary, Institute of Theology from the Pontifical Urban University, Rome, and to aggregate it with St. Peter s Pontifical Institute, Bengaluru. The requested deaggregation was granted with effect from 31 May 2005 and St. Paul s Seminary, Institute of Theology has been granted aggregation with St. Peter s Pontifical Institute, Bengaluru by the Congregation for Catholic Education with effect from 23 July II. CENTRE FOR PHILOSOPHICAL STUDIES Christ Hall Seminary was founded on 13 th July 1970 by His Grace Justin Diraviam, the then Archbishop of Madurai for the study of Philosophy at Karumathur, Madurai, along with a college called De la Salle college managed by the Christian brothers. The Diocesan seminarians from all over the region of Tamilnadu had been going to this College for their philosophical studies. In the year 1978, the college was transferred to the Jesuits through a deed of transfer by the Archbishop Justin Diraviam. Initially, this philosophate was a Regional Major Seminary receiving the students from all the dioceses of Tamil Nadu and even from some dioceses from Andhra, Kerala and North India. In course of time, as the strength was constantly increasing, it had to restrict the admission of seminarians. Thus, it became, from June 1983 onwards, a provincial major seminary for the ecclesiastical province of the Archdiocese of Madurai. The Philosophy department in St. Paul s Seminary, Tiruchirappalli, was closed in March In the year 1999 the Apostolic visitors from the Holy See, after having studied the situation, made some recommendations towards starting an autonomous Philosophate. In June 2006 a new Philosophate was started in the Christ Hall Seminary campus itself equipped with qualified staff members and infrastructures. It gives two years of solid philosophy to the already graduated seminarians. From the academic year the philosophy faculty of Christ Hall Seminary has been integrated as part of St. Paul s Seminary, Institute of Theology, Tiruchirappalli. 5

It has its roots in the Jewish religion and it has developed differently in different cultures of the East and West. Active participation of all the members of the assembly is the focus of liturgical movements before and after Vatican II. The inculturation of the liturgy and the creative celebration in the local context are the needs of the day in the liturgical experience of the community. Since liturgy is the source and summit of all the activities of the Church, the relation between liturgy and different activities of the Church must be studied. Liturgy and popular devotions, evangelization, ecumenism, social concerns are our main concern in the course. LI 02 Liturgical Year and Sacraments (1 Credit) The Church celebrates the saving work of Christ throughout the year and makes present to the people the richness of the mystery of Christ in accordance with the cyclic rhythm of the year. The structure of the liturgical year with its temporal and sanctoral cycle, the origin and celebration of important feasts are dealt with in the first section. The formation of the lectionary in the different seasons of the year and the central themes developed in each are dealt with in the second section. The last section deals with the celebration of different sacraments and sacramentals, 46
