3 Introduction to the Discipleship Guide CityLights Discipleship Guide is meant to empower the leader with great resources such as articles, FAQ s, video clips, sermons, and much more. These resources are meant to give the leader a better understanding of each topic so that it can be properly explained for the disciple. Keeping in mind that this is a guide, not a step by step classroom plan, this guide consists of our five core values: Connect, Community, Commit, Contribute, and Commission. These five values are the main description of a disciple s life. In order for a believer to be successful within their walk, they must be able to implement these values within their lives daily this is where you come in. You are one of the main ingredients to this guide, CityLights believes in organic one on one disciple; we want your individuality and personality within the mix. All we ask is that you reflect the following steps: I. Phase One: Focus on Connect II. Phase Two: Focus on Community III. Phase Three: Focus on Commit IV. Phase Four: Focus on Contribute V. Phase Five: Focus on Commission If you feel as if your disciple is lacking in a certain topic, it is recommended that you spend an additional two to four weeks on that specific topic to assure that he/she has a full grasp on it. As the discipler you are expected to have a relationship with your disciple; as a result we require that you speak with your disciple on the phone at least once a week and meet with your disciple outside of a church event (i.e. Sunday service, community group) at least once a month. Although we highly recommend you speak and see your disciple more often, these are simply the bare minimum expectations. Remember, discipleship is a huge honor! Have fun and never take it for granted. Always be ready to pour life into your disciple and keep in mind, you teach what you know, but you impart who you are. CITYLIGHTS CHURCH MISSION: Making disciples that touch their world with the love of Jesus Core Values (how we achieve our mission; the how and the why we do what we do) Connect - We exist that we might introduce Jesus to people, bringing them to Jesus, lifting up the name of Jesus so that He may draw all men to Himself (John 1:35-42; Acts 1:8-11). Community - As our Triune God exists in perfect unity in the Godhead, we exist that we may live in community with fellow disciples, in order that we may follow the biblical example of living life together, being a community, caring for one another, worshipping together corporately, being accountable to one another, and discovering and applying biblical truth together (John 17:2-24; Acts 2:42). Commit - We exist that we might ensure every follower of Jesus is committed to following Him, to live lives of faith and obedience to Him, to grow in Christ-like character, knowledge, and holiness, to grow in our worship of Him, to love him fully with our heart, mind, soul, and strength, living lives of prayer and obedience (Luke 5:27-28; 2 Corinthians 5:15; Luke 9:23; Luke 10:27). Contribute - We exist that we might encourage every follower of Jesus to see that the Holy Spirit has called us into the body of believers and has graciously gifted us to serve one other, to love others, and to contribute what God has already gifted us with: our time, talent, and treasures (John 12:26; Matthew 6:24; Romans 12:3-8). Commissioned - We exist to equip every follower of Jesus, having been commissioned by Him and empowered by the Holy Spirit to continue making disciples (Matthew 28:16-20; Ephesians 4:12-13). 2

Ezekiel 11:19 I will give them an undivided heart and put a new spirit in them; I will remove from them their heart of stone and give them a heart of flesh. Romans 6:5-6 If we have been united with him like this in his death, we will certainly also be united with him in his resurrection. Yours, O LORD, is the kingdom; you are exalted as head over all. 12 Wealth and honor come from you; you are the ruler of all things. In your hands are strength and power to exalt and give strength to all. 13 Now, our God, we give you thanks, and praise your glorious name. 14 But who am I, and who are my people, that we should be able to give as generously as this? Everything comes from you, and we have given you only what comes from your hand. 15 We are aliens and strangers in your sight, as were all our forefathers. Our days on earth are like a shadow, without hope. 16 O LORD our God, as for all this abundance that we have provided for building you a temple for your Holy Name, it comes from your hand, and all of it belongs to you. 17 I know, my God, that you test the heart and are pleased with integrity. All these things have I given willingly and with honest intent. And now I have seen with joy how willingly your people who are here have given to you. Luke 6:38 Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you. 2 Corinthians 9:5 So I thought it necessary to urge the brothers to visit you in advance and finish the arrangements for the generous gift you had promised. Then it will be ready as a generous gift, not as one grudgingly given. 1 Corinthians 16:2 On the first day of every week, each one of you should set aside a sum of money in keeping with his income, saving it up, so that when I come no collections will have to be made. 1 Timothy 6:6-11 But godliness with contentment is great gain. 7 For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it. 8But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with that. 9 People who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge men into ruin and destruction. 10 For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many grieves. Paul s Charge to Timothy But you, man of God, flee from all this, and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance and gentleness. 11

Scripture (NIV 1984): Isaiah 52:7 How beautiful on the mountains are the feet of those who bring good news, who proclaim peace, who bring good tidings, who proclaim salvation, who say to Zion, Your God reigns! Jeremiah 1:6-8 Ah, Sovereign LORD, I said, I do not know how to speak; I am only a child. 7 But the LORD said to me, Do not say, I am only a child. You must go to everyone I send you to and say whatever I command you. 8 Do not be afraid of them, for I am with you and will rescue you, declares the LORD. 12

14 Ezekiel 3:16-21 Warning to Israel At the end of seven days the word of the LORD came to me: 17 Son of man, I have made you a watchman for the house of Israel; so hear the word I speak and give them warning from me. 18 When I say to a wicked man, You will surely die, and you do not warn him or speak out to dissuade him from his evil ways in order to save his life, that wicked man will die for his sin, and I will hold you accountable for his blood. 19 But if you do warn the wicked man and he does not turn from his wickedness or from his evil ways, he will die for his sin; but you will have saved yourself. 20 Again, when a righteous man turns from his righteousness and does evil, and I put a stumbling block before him, he will die. Since you did not warn him, he will die for his sin. The righteous things he did will not be remembered, and I will hold you accountable for his blood. 21 But if you do warn the righteous man not to sin and he does not sin, he will surely live because he took warning, and you will have saved yourself. Romans 10:15 And how can they preach unless they are sent? As it is written, How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news! Acts 1:8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth. Acts 4:19-20 But Peter and John replied, Judge for yourselves whether it is right in God s sight to obey you rather than God. 20 For we cannot help speaking about what we have seen and heard. Matthew 28:19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 1 Peter 3:15 But in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect, Colossians 4:5-6 Be wise in the way you act toward outsiders; make the most of every opportunity. 6 Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone. 2 Corinthians 3:4-6 Such confidence as this is ours through Christ before God. 5 Not that we are competent in ourselves to claim anything for ourselves, but our competence comes from God. 6 He has made us competent as ministers of a new covenant not of the letter but of the Spirit; for the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life. 13
