The Medieval Church in the West AD Eve of the Reformation A series of 5 lectures by Rev. Charles Talar September 12, 19, 26; October 3, 10, :45am - 11:45am Audio/Visual Room During a time of chaos the Church emerged as a unifying source. Christians could claim to belong to a history without Rome. They could look past the Roman Empire to the Old Testament. Indeed it vividly described the turbulent warrior kingdom of Israel and was a past better suited to the stormy present than to memories of imperial Rome.

THE BIBLE TIMELINE The Story of Salvation The Bible Timeline: The Story of Salvation is a fascinating 24 part Bible study that takes participants on a journey through the entire Bible. In this study you will: Learn how the key people, places and events, in the Bible fit together to reveal God s plan for humanity. See how the events in the Old Testament are fulfilled in the New Testament. Gain a greater appreciation for the Scripture readings you hear proclaimed during Mass. The 24-week study will be offered on: Wednesday evenings, 7-9 pm, in the Audio/Visual Room Sessions beginning September 12, 2018 Cost of study materials is $33.00 per participant. Pre-registration is required for all Bible studies; Register online at the parish website or download form and mail or deliver to the Adult Formation Office

MATTHEW: THE KING AND HIS KINGDOM A 24 part study of the Gospel of Matthew which shows how Jesus built on the foundation laid in the Old Testament to inaugurate the kingdom of heaven on earth. Although the Gospel of Matthew was not the first Gospel written, it was placed first in the collection of writings that constitute the New Testament because it conveys a high regard for the teachings of the Hebrew Scriptures. There are approximately fifteen instances in which Matthew interprets events in the life of Jesus as a fulfillment of a prophecy recorded in the Old Testament. The author of Matthew did not regard Christianity as something that required a break with Judaism rather, he considered Christianity a continuation and fulfillment of that which had been set forth in the literature of the Hebrew Scriptures. The 24-week study will be offered on: Tuesday mornings, 9:45-11:45 am, beginning September 11, 2018 Or Wednesday evenings, 7-9 pm, beginning September 12, 2018 Cost of study materials is $27.00 per participant. Pre-registration is required for all Bible studies; Register online at the parish website or download form and mail or deliver to the Adult Formation Office

ACTS: The Spread of the Kingdom Acts: The Spread of the Kingdom reveals how Christ s Kingdom on earth is empowered to carry on his work in the world. The Book of Acts shows the Church, enlivened by the Holy Spirit, teaching, preaching, healing, and inviting all into the Kingdom of God. Acts provides a historic framework for understanding the rest of the New Testament. Paul s letters, in particular, come alive in a new way when they are read within the context of the Acts narrative. The 22-week study will be offered on: Wednesday evenings, 7-9 pm, beginning September 12, 2018 Cost of study materials is $27.00 per participant. REVELATION: The Kingdom yet to Come The Apocalypse, or Revelation to John, is the last book in the Bible, and one of the most difficult to understand because it abounds in unfamiliar and extravagant symbolism. The Book of Revelation cannot be adequately understood except against the historical background that occasioned its writing. It was composed as resistance literature to meet a crisis! In this DVD series, Jeff Cavins leads us through this intriguing book in the Bible. The 11-week study will be offered on: Tuesday mornings, 9:45-11:45 am, beginning September 11, 2018 Cost of study materials is $23.00 per participant. Pre-registration is required for all Bible studies; Register online at the parish website or download form and mail or deliver to the Adult Formation Office

vmenuv Discover the people who shaped the Church and changed the world. THE PIVOTAL PLAYERS SAINTS. ARTISTS. MYSTICS. SCHOLARS. Bishop Robert Barron s CATHOLICISM series, an epic ten part documentary, took people around the world and deep into the Catholic faith. But there is still more of the story to tell. CATHOLICISM: The Pivotal Players is a multi-part film series that illumines saints, artists, mystics, and scholars who not only shaped the life of the Church but changed the course of civilization.

September 6: Introduction to the Series October 4: Saint Francis of Assisi, the Reformer Francis did in his day what was intended at the time of Vatican II: pull down the bastions; put an end to the isolation of the Church and bring her back into contact with the people. Francis, for his part, resolved the problem evangelically. In his Order the superiors would be called ministers, meaning servants, and all the others, friars, meaning brothers. November 1: Saint Thomas Aquinas, the Theologian Born in Italy in 1225 Thomas was sent to study in a Benedictine monastery at age 5 and remained there for 9 years. While there he asked a key question, What is God?, and devoted his entire life answering this question for himself and others. Aquinas, a philosopher, theologian, scientist, mystic, scripture scholar and saint, was a valuable contributor to the Church and to Western culture. December 6: Saint Catherine of Siena, the Mystic Catherine is the only lay woman ever proclaimed a Doctor of the Church. She possessed a remarkable instinct for delivering a word of encouragement a straightforward, illuminating word just when it was needed. The span of Catherine s life was marked by enormous change and upheaval, both within the Church and in society in general. Catherine and her contemporaries witnessed the damage caused by wars, countless natural disasters, the terrifying horror of the Black Death and a Papacy residing in Avignon, France.

February 7: Blessed John Henry Newman, the Convert A towering theological figure behind Vatican II and author of the seminal theological classic, On The Development of Doctrine. Newman s other well known work, Apologia Pro Vita Sua, traces his own religious and theological development. It was written, in part, to defend his integrity against the accusation of a popular novelist, that Newman had been corrupted by his conversion to Roman Catholicism, an accusation that Newman knew was widely held. Blessed Newman was beatified in 2010 by Pope Benedict XVI. March 7: G.K. Chesterton, the Evangelist Chesterton receiving an honorary Doctorate from the University of Notre Dame in Oxford University Chesterton, born in 1847, baptized in the Anglican Church, was brought into communion with the Catholic Church in He lectured extensively in the US and elsewhere taking on the arguments of modernity against Catholicism. Chesterton was a physically large man with a very large intellect and imagination to match his appearance. He is considered one of the great thinkers of the 20th century. He embodied the wealth and capaciousness of Catholicism; was like fine champagne: intoxicating, sparkling, and rare. Chesterton is also the author of the popular series of mystery fiction: The Father Brown Stories.

April 4: Michelangelo, the Artist - Part I The commentary begins by referring to the brave witness of Saint John Damascene, the monk who opposed attempts by the Byzantine Emperor Leo, to obliterate images of God the Father and God the Son from Christian Churches. Michelangelo Buonarroti was born on March 6, 1475 and by the age of 15 was studying the art of sculpture in the Garden of San Marco, a school for artists fostered by Lorenzo de Medici, de facto ruler of Florence. At the age of 21 he received a commission to sculpt the Pieta. May 2: Michelangelo, the Artist - Part II Art is both our play and our offering to God. Holy Mother Church is not accidentally but naturally the mother of arts, as she was the mother of Michelangelo. Michelangelo shows us that there can be no true humanism without God because man was made by God, for God, and in his image. In 1508 Pope Julius II commissioned Michelangelo to paint the ceiling of the newly restored Sistine Chapel in Rome however, Michelangelo had little experience as a painter and even less in the delicate medium of fresco. Thus the temperamental Michelangelo was reluctant to take on the commission and stormed away from Rome, incurring Julius s wrath; eventually he was persuaded to return and began the masterpiece, completed in 1512.

Marriage, Divorce and Remarriage In the Catholic Church Marriage directly parallels our relationship with God who is 100% faithful in his relationship with us. Those who are married are called to the same faithfulness. But... divorce happens. Many myths and misconceptions are perpetuated in this area especially in regard to annulments, remarriage outside the Church, and admittance to Holy Communion by those in irregular unions. If you would like information on filing a Petition of Declaration of Nullity contact the Director of Adult Formation: ygill@stjohnvianney.org

When you look at Raphael s, School of Athens, you are meant to relate the posture of Plato and Aristotle to the books they carry: the elder Plato points toward heaven as he carries the Timaeus, his dialogue about the order of creation, while Aristotle is gesturing forwards and earthward to the world of man as he carries his Ethics. Above them and between them in the sky is the vanishing point of all the lines of perspective. It s also the center of an arch above the two philosophers. That arch was not to be found in ancient Athens; it is the arch of St. Peter s as it s being rebuilt.
