Congratulations! By receiving Christ, you have just begun the most fulfilling and exciting experience of your life. The Bible states in Hebrews 12:1 that living for Christ is like running a race. The Apostle Paul says in 1 Corinthians 9:24, Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize. Anyone running a race must know there are different stages to a race; 1. The Launch Out of the blocks 2. The Race Setting the pace 3. The Hand Off Handing the baton to the next runner. 4. The Home Stretch Not giving up before the finish 5. The Finish- Faithfully completing the race 2

1. The Launch - Out Of The Blocks This is the first thing you do to start the race. Launching out of the starting blocks successfully many times determines how well the rest of the race goes. You must make sure you have started right. Acts 4:12 says, Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved. Romans 10:9 tells us, That if you confess with your mouth, Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. You must trust Jesus with all your heart... Salvation only comes to those who have genuinely trusted in Christ and what He did on the cross for them. You must trust Jesus with all your heart, trust Him to forgive you. Trust Him to give you eternal life. Trust Him as the Lord of your life! All believers in the New Testament were baptized after receiving Chirst. Acts 2:41, Those who accepted his message were baptized, and about three thousand were added to their number that day. Baptism represents the death of your old life and being raised to new life, eternal life in Christ. Just as Christ died and was buried and rose again, so you died to sin and have risen to new life in Christ. The work of the Spirit of God in your heart was unseen by the human eye, but baptism is a public announcement of your faith in Jesus. Jesus was baptized in the Jordan River by John in order to be obedient to his heavenly Father. Talk with your pastor immediately about launching into the race by baptism. If you are not an adult you should speak to your parent(s) about this. It will bring you great joy and will be a great testimony to your family and friends of your allegiance to the Son of God. 3

2. The Race - Setting the Pace After the runners have launched into the race, they must pace themselves for the whole race so they can finish to win. They pace themselves by deliberately establishing how fast they will run and maintain that rate throughout the race. They do not want to use all their energy up in the first half. Learning to pray - talking to God and hearing His voice by reading the Bible - will sustain you for the whole race by allowing you to be strong after the launch. The Bible is God speaking to you. It is His words from His mouth through the hearts of His chosen disciples. In Matthew 4:4, Jesus said, Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God. God s word is milk, bread and meat to your hungry spirit. It will feed your spirit and help you grow. 1 Peter 2:2, Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation A good place to start reading is the Gospel of Mark. It is exciting and full of the life and miracles of Jesus. One of the first things a baby does is cry or exercise its voice. Crying out to God or praying is talking to your Heavenly Father. The Son of God taught us to pray to the Father in Jesus name. Matthew 6:9 This, then, is how you should pray: Our Father in heaven... In John 14:13, Jesus is speaking and says, And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Son may bring glory to the Father. You may ask for anything in my name, and I will do it. As you talk to God, call Him Father and ask Him to help you in every area of your life. He knows your every need and is extremely interested in helping you. He wants you to know Him, know His will for your life and His plan for every situation you are in. Luke 12:6-7 says our Father even cares for the sparrows. Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? Yet not one of them is forgotten by God. Indeed, the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Don t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows. He will talk back to you through His Word, the Bible. As you read His Word, He will Talking to God by praying is one of the greatest privileges of your life. send you His thoughts and desires to your spirit. Proverbs 20:27 says, The spirit of man is the LORD s lamp. This means God will give you understanding through your spirit which is alive and born anew by the Holy Spirit when you were saved. He will speak to your spirit as you pray and read your Bible. God s Spirit will help you to understand what the Bible means and what it says. 4

3. The Hand Off - Handing the Baton to the Next Runner To compete and win a relay race as a team, runners must pass the baton to someone else. Jesus said in Romans 10:13-15 that everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved, but people cannot meet Christ, until someone shares the good news. Jesus told his followers in Mark 1:17 that if they would follow him that he would make them fishers of men. This meant that those who committed themselves to living for him would be actively working to tell others of his forgiveness and salvation. Sometimes, new Christians feel inadequate or untrained to share their faith. There is a story about a woman in John 4 who may have felt the same way. She had just put her faith in Jesus To help others meet Christ, by telling them how Jesus saved you, is the most rewarding accomplishment in a Christian s life. The next phase of a race is the home stretch. The runner has paced himself/herself so they can make it to the finish line. Most races are lost in the last 1/2 of the race. When you received Jesus you were spiritually born into the family of God. God is your Heavenly Father and all true Christians are your brothers and sisters in Christ. Because of what Jesus did for you on the cross you are now and went into her city to tell everyone about him. She had no special training, and was unfamiliar with the Bible. The only thing she knew to share was what Jesus had done in her life. The Bible says that after she told her story [testimony], many believed in Jesus. The most important and effective tool you have to help your friends and family to meet Jesus, is the undeniable truth of what Christ has done for you. You may be the only person to ever tell your friends and family about Jesus. Ask God to help you pass the baton! 4. Home Stretch - Not Giving Up Before the Finish In the Christian life the home stretch is fellowshipping with God s family in a local church. a part of God s forever family! You belong!! You were born into the family by the Holy Spirit. John 3:6 says, Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit. As a member of God s forever family you will want to grow up and become a mature Christian. I have never known a strong, mature Christian that was not connected to a local church. Make sure the local church you join believes and preaches the Bible as God s eternal Word. Check with your local pastor about how to join. 5

5. The Finish - Faithfully Completing the Race Every race has a start and a finish. Your Christian race started when you prayed to receive Christ and will end with you in heaven with Jesus. To finish strong you must be filled with the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit brought you into the family of God by the new birth and will continue to be with you the whole journey. God, the Holy Spirit, lives in you now! Romans 5:5 says, And hope does not disappoint us, because God has poured out his love into our hearts by the Holy Spirit, whom he has given us. It is the Holy Spirit s assignment to teach you, guide you and lead you. John 16:13, He will guide you into all truth... Romans 8:14 clearly states, Because those who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. Ask the Holy Spirit to completely fill you, show you His gifts, teach you and help you live for Christ. Following His leadership is the key to your Christian life. You will finish strong by listening and obeying His voice. His presence in your life is the power you need to overcome the enemy, Satan. Jesus said in Acts 1:8, But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you;. Revelation 2:7, He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. By asking the Holy Spirit to fill you, teach you and guide you each day you will finish the race God has set for you to run. We are proud of you for making Jesus the Lord of your life. God will help you every step of the way. Philippians 1:6 says, Being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion Keep your eyes on Jesus as you finish the race. until the day of Christ Jesus. God started this work in you by giving you the faith to be saved and He will complete it. Hebrews 12:2, Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. 6
