1 Walk on God's Path Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight. Proverbs 3:5-6 Every, we make hundreds of small decisions: what to have for breakfast, what to wear, what to say or not say in any situation. We also make bigger decisions: whether to apply for a new job, pursue a relationship, or join a small group at church! The decisions we make to impact our future. Decisions have consequences both good and bad. If we ve experienced the regret and pain caused by bad decisions, it can paralyze us. When we face new decisions, we cry out, God, help me out here! What is Your will for me? What is best? What do You want me to do? This week, we re going to look at what it means to be on God s path and how that brings freedom in decision-making. 10 Chase Oaks Church PICK ONE Chase Oaks Church PICK ONE 11

12 Chase Oaks Church PICK ONE Chase Oaks Church PICK ONE 13 Leader Notes Share your story 1. Open your group with prayer. This should be a brief, simple prayer in which you invite God to be with you as you meet. You can pray for specific requests at the end of the meeting or stop momentarily to pray if a particular situation comes up during your discussion. 2. If your group is new, welcome newcomers. Introduce everyone you may even want to have name tags for your first meeting. 3. We recommend that you rotate host homes on a regular basis and let the hosts lead the meeting. We ve come to realize that healthy groups rotate leadership. This helps to develop every member s ability to shepherd a few people in a safe environment. Even Jesus gave others the opportunity to serve alongside Him (Mark 6:30-44). Look at the Frequently Asked Questions in the Appendix for additional information about hosting or leading the group. 4. As you begin the first meeting, take time to pass around a copy of the Small Group Roster on page 95 and a sheet of paper or have one person pass around the Study Guide, opened to the Small Group Roster. Have everyone introduce themselves, and then, write down their contact information. Ask someone to make copies or type up a list with everyone s information and it to the group this week. 5. Use the Small Group Calendar on page 86 to plan who will host and lead each meeting. Take a few minutes to plan hosts and leaders for your remaining meetings. Don't pass this up! It will revolutionize your group. Begin your time together by using the following questions and activities to get people talking. Introduce yourself to the group (if your group is new). Share one surprising fact with everyone about yourself. How would you characterize the stage of life you are in right now? Are you making a lot of "first" decisions where to go to college, what career to pursue, who to marry, when to start having kids, or how to raise a baby? Or are you beyond the "first" decisions? What types of choices are you facing right now? What are you hoping to get out of this series and time with your group?

14 Chase Oaks Church PICK ONE Chase Oaks Church PICK ONE 15 watch the video Watch the video for this session now. Use the space provided below to record any key thoughts, questions, and things you want to remember or follow up on. After watching the video, read the Scripture and discuss the questions in the Hear God's Story section and in the Create a New Story section.

16 Chase Oaks Church PICK ONE Chase Oaks Church PICK ONE 17 hear god, 's story Use the following questions to guide your discussion of the teaching and stories you just experienced and the Bible passage below. READ JOHN 15:5-8. I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing. If you do not remain in me, you are like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned. If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. This is to my Father s glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples. What do you think it means to remain (some versions say abide ) in Jesus? How does that idea relate to the idea that we heard about in the video of being in the yard or on the path? Is it surprising, frustrating, or confusing that God doesn't make all of our decisions for us or even clear to us? Why do you think God works this way? In the video, we were reminded that God s primary will for us is maturity. How would remaining in Jesus help us toward that goal? What do you think Jesus meant when He said, if my words remain in you? How would someone s words remain in us? What s one habit or practice you could engage in to keep Jesus words in your mind and heart? How would that practice keep you on the path with God?

create a new story In this section, talk about how you will apply the wisdom you ve learned from the teaching and Bible study. Then think about practical steps you can take in the coming week to live out what you ve learned. FAMILY (Immediate or Extended) Describe a time where you made a decision to adjust the path you were on so that you could end up in a better destination. How did that path adjustment change the subsequent smaller decisions in your life? Is the path you are currently on taking you where you want to go? Why or why not? What specific area of your life is hard to bring into alignment with God s path? What makes it challenging for you? What is one choice you would like God to give you the most clarity about? Did to's discussion change how you view that decision? familiar (Neighbors, Kids' Friends) FRIENDS This week, how will you nurture your connection with Jesus? Can you commit to spending time in daily prayer or study of God s Word (use the Daily Devotions section to guide you)? Tell the group how you plan to follow Jesus this week, and then, at your next meeting, talk about your progress and challenges. Take a look at the Circles of Life diagram to the right and write the names of two or three people you know you could invite to your small group. Think of people who might be spiritually curious but might not yet have a relationship with God. Commit to praying for God s guidance and an opportunity to have a conversation with each of them. Share your lists with the group so that you can all be praying for the people you ve identified. To close your time together, spend some time in prayer. Ask, How can we pray for you this week? Invite everyone to share but don t force the issue. Be sure to write prayer requests on your Prayer and Praise Report on page 94. 6 20 Chase Oaks Church PICK ONE Chase Oaks Church PICK ONE 21 For Additional study If you feel God nudging you to go deeper, take some time between now and our next meeting to dig into His Word. Explore the Bible passages related to this session s theme on your own, jotting your reflections in a journal or in this study guide. A great way to gain insight on a passage is to read it in several different translations. You may want to use a Bible app or website to compare translations. READ ROMANS 12:2. Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God s will is his good, pleasing and perfect will. What does it mean to conform to the world? What specific ways are you tempted to do that? How does transformation occur according to this verse? We sometimes think of God s will as something that restricts us or runs in the opposite direction of our own will. But what words does this verse use to describe God s will? What do you think it means that God s will is pleasing? READ MICAH 6:8. He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the LORD require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God. How does this verse describe being on the path with God? What does it mean to act justly? What is one thing you could do this week to act justly? We all love to receive mercy for ourselves. But what does it mean to love mercy for others? Who is someone in your life who needs to be shown mercy?

22 Chase Oaks Church PICK ONE Chase Oaks Church PICK ONE 23 daily devotions Use these daily devotions to go deeper into this week s topic. On the first, you may want to read over all the verses for the week to get the big picture of the passage. Each, read the verse given. Take your time. Ask God to speak to you through His Word. Notice which word or phrase stands out to you. Then take some time to journal your response back to Him. Listen to what God wants to say to you through His Word, and respond to Him as you meditate on the truths of Scripture READ GALATIANS 5:13. You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh; rather, serve one another humbly in love. Who needs you to humbly serve them to? READ GALATIANS 5: For the entire law is fulfilled in keeping this one command: Love your neighbor as yourself. If you bite and devour each other, watch out or you will be destroyed by each other. Sit quietly for a moment. Ask God to bring a neighbor to mind. (God's direction may surprise you.) With your words or actions, show love to that person to. READ GALATIANS 5: So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are in conflict with each other, so that you are not to do whatever you want. But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law. What desires of the flesh do you wrestle the most with? Take some time to simply invite the Holy Spirit to lead you away from those desires to READ GALATIANS 5: The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God. Use this list as an exercise in self-examination. Which of these sins trip you up? Remember that Jesus defined lust as sexual immorality and that a career can be an idol. Fearlessly name your sin, and freely receive God s grace. READ GALATIANS 5: But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. Ask God to speak to you through this verse. Which of these characteristics is difficult for you? Go out of your way to to be more joyful, or more gentle, or exercise self-control whichever way God leads. READ GALATIANS 5: Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit. Let us not become conceited, provoking and envying each other. Look back at the last 24 hours of your life as if watching a video. See yourself waking up, going to work, and interacting with family or friends. Notice what you said, how you acted, what you read or watched. Where did you keep in step with the Spirit, and where did you lose your way?
